I'm new to macOS and I've tried to install liberation fonts with macports:
sudo port install liberation-fonts
But it looks like this doesn't install the fonts on the system. When I open Inkcape I don't see the fonts.
I used this command to find where they are located:
port contents liberation-fonts
Port liberation-fonts @2.1.5_1 contains:
/opt/local/share/fonts/TTF/LiberationMono-Bold.ttf
/opt/local/share/fonts/TTF/LiberationMono-BoldItalic.ttf
/opt/local/share/fonts/TTF/LiberationMono-Italic.ttf
/opt/local/share/fonts/TTF/LiberationMono-Regular.ttf
/opt/local/share/fonts/TTF/LiberationSans-Bold.ttf
/opt/local/share/fonts/TTF/LiberationSans-BoldItalic.ttf
/opt/local/share/fonts/TTF/LiberationSans-Italic.ttf
/opt/local/share/fonts/TTF/LiberationSans-Regular.ttf
/opt/local/share/fonts/TTF/LiberationSerif-Bold.ttf
/opt/local/share/fonts/TTF/LiberationSerif-BoldItalic.ttf
/opt/local/share/fonts/TTF/LiberationSerif-Italic.ttf
/opt/local/share/fonts/TTF/LiberationSerif-Regular.ttf
Do I need to click on every font and install it manually or is there a way to automatically install the fonts? Or maybe do I need to reboot to install the fonts?
I can't find any information how to install the fonts, Google AI suggestion only says that installing macport is enough. Then why the fonts are not installed? Do I need to refresh the font cache like on Linux?
Or maybe there is a different reason why installed fonts don't appear in Inkscape?

Whenever I update the OS, (e.g. point updates to Sonoma, and yesterday upgrading to Sequoia 15.5), all my user fonts (in
~/Library/Fonts
) get moved to a folder called Fonts (disabled)
, also in the user Library.
The fonts are decent OTFs from Monotype, Adobe, Linotype etc. I have no reason to suspect that they are 'corrupt' in any way. If I move them back to the Fonts folder, they work perfectly. Font Book validates them with no errors, if that actually means anything.
I don't have the problem on my other computer, with identical fonts. The file attributes and permissions are all the same.

Any idea how I can troubleshoot or fix this?
I am still using Linotype's FontExplorerX font manager app (sadly discontinued a few years ago); but I don't think it's that because: it doesn't happen on the other Mac, which also runs it; the fonts get moved before the app launches; and it doesn't happen on a standard reboot, just an OS update.
I have several fonts in /Library/Fonts/
, too; but they are unaffected.

iOS: Type occasional straight quotes with smart quotes turned on (external keyboard)
The question https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/306323/type-straight-quotes-when-smart-quotes-is-turned-on answers this quite well for macOS, but the solution (using a text replacement with the straight quote as the replacement phrase) does not appear to work in iOS: [
^^s
at the bottom here:

‘
character, even though the replacement’s phrase is the '
character. (Note that the examples above that one also beginning with double-carets, such as ^^1
→ ¹, ^^9
→ ⁹, etc., work just fine—I used them in this sentence to type those superscript digits.)
I’m looking for a way to set a global hotkey to toggle smart quotes, a macro to insert a single or double straight quote, or anything easier than my current two methods:
1. Go to Settings → Keyboard and toggle the smart quotes, type the straight quote, and go back to Settings → Keyboard and toggle them back (this is what I do when I need to only type straight quotes for a period of time); or
2. Find a single quote or double quote somewhere and copy/paste it. (This is what I do when I must mix the two in ongoing text editing.)
Both are painful. I’d appreciate any trick to make it less so!

Keynote slide editing, Plus-sign on text box, how to AUTOMATICALLY Resize?, and does it have limits?

I already know that, when editing a text box, if a plus sign (+) appears in the bottom center, then it's warning you that there's more text that you're not seeing, that's fine. And yes, I know how to Cmd-A, resize font, etc.
BUT I also seem to recall that you could somehow magic-click or use a hotkey combination that would tell Keynote to automatically resize the text so that you could see it all. I can't seem to find that now, but I'm sure I remember it.
I did check and Layout -> Shrink to Fit is already checked/enabled.
Questions:
- Does anybody remember the hotkey or mouse click that would resize the text automatically, so it was all visible?
- Is there maybe some font size limit that the automatic resizing won't go below some value?
- Is there some other easy way to edit the text on the slide? I usually do want to reduce the amount of text, but for that I need to temporarily see it all. (beyond Cmd-A functionality)
Other Notes:
- Using the default "white" template
- Keynote version 11.2 on Intel iMac with up-to-date Monterey
Please feel free to make other suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Okay, so like, I'm aware the Character Viewer (⌘ + ⌃ + space) is displaying a system index of the full supported Unicode set of chars.
Z
**My question is**, is there a way I can take a glyph I've created in, say, photoshop or illustrator and either supplant/replace one of the system glyphs, or somehow bootstrap it into one of the Private Use Area (E000) blocks inside the unicode table? I totally understand this would be a *local only* modification and that nobody else would see it, as they would lack the custom glyph. That's fine. I'm even fine if the value of the glyph doesn't align with the visual output (so if I were to overwrite the letter "e" with billiard ball - this is a "'as a for instance," NOT my plan, lol - it would still sort between "d" and "f" still - this is not a requirement, just saying I wouldn't care).
This is for personal use on my own system.
Presuppose I have the relevant software to create and save the glyph in any format required, raster or vector, including the ability to make it into any flavor of font or graphic file. The objective here is to be able to add custom glyphs as labels to icons, or the system-ui for my own use. Nobody else who's not on my MBP need ever see it; I just wanna know if I can override or modify that table.
...I mean, it's gotta be stored SOMEWHERE on the drive, right?
Edit:
Okay, so, to further clarify: MacOS has a set of glyphs available to it by default, all built-in like, that it applies when rendering text. I favor using these when screen real estate is at a premium Example:
(above: Important, Work-Related, Shopping, Movies, Music). The full set of supported chars is viewable in the Character Viewer...
But there are still hundreds of open "slots" that have either never been filled, or are foreign language characters Apple didn't see fit to bother with.. When you see a blank white rectangle ('▯') this is an unsupported glyph*.
So what I'm HOPING is someone knows how to actually not only make use of some of the open regions therein, but that also might know how to make the OS acknowledge their addition.
*Apple calls them "tofu" and has gone pretty far outta the way to preclude their ever showing on screen. Fun fact: the OS-Shipped Noto Sans ("Noto" == "NoTo" == "No Tofu") font contains the MAJORITY of available glyphs

Circle sector unicode rendered with inconsistent size

I'm seeing some weird behavior from the circle sector symbols on my mac:
1. Some circle sectors (◑, ◐, ○, ●) render larger than others (◔, ◕, ◗, ◖)
2. For *some* of the smaller symbols, typing them before I type one of the larger symbols (e.g., ◕◑ or ◖● or ) makes the larger symbol render at the same size as the preceding smaller one.
3. This holds true if I type certain characters (ex: 👾 and zero-width spaces are safe, ASCII characters or ✓ are not). I can type any number of "safe" characters before typing ◑ or friends, and add or remove those characters between the two circle sectors, and it will be fine as long as I don't add any "unsafe" characters. Adding those will cause ◑ &c to go back to being big.
4. Having a big ◑ &c beforehand will prevent ◕ &c from making following ◑ &c the same size. Adding a space makes it work again in subsequent words. I.e. in ◑◕◑ ◕◑ the first and second ◑ are big, but the third ◑ is small.
5. ◌, and maybe others, have the opposite pattern, where normally it renders small but putting it after a big character (◑◌) will make ◌ render large, but ◌◑ doesn't make the ◑ small. Also, ◌◑◌ will make both ◌ small.
6. Certain other characters, such as ♜, behave the same way as the small circle sectors in terms of affecting the size of following circle sectors. This includes ♟ in its unicode form but *not* ♟️ in its emoji form.
7. This happens in some applications (Todoist, Chrome (including address bar), Spotlight search bar) but not others (terminal, the address bar or this stackexchange textbox I'm using right now on firefox). The original goal was to use this in todoist to let circles mark out hours in a set of tags for visually representing duration, but that only works if the circles are all the same size for appropriately scaled time ~ visual weight.
I haven't mapped out every weird pattern of character interaction, there's bound to be some I've missed. So I guess my question is... what the heck? Why? And is this a fixable problem?
When it was just the different circle sectors showing up at different sizes, I thought maybe it was because the system font didn't include all of the circle sectors and was falling back to a backup font to display the ones it didn't have. But this whole adjacency size-changing thing has me flummoxed, which is why I'm turning to you all.
EDIT: to drive home the point that all of this is font- (or application-) dependent, not all of the size/adjacency observations hold true in the finished post when I read it on firefox on my mac. In particular, the adjacency patterns don't seem to be happening

It's only happening in browsers (Firefox, Safari, and Chrome) and not happening on all sites. I suspect that it might be based on the CSS font selection. These sites are working fine:

My guess is that one of the system fonts got updated to include these ligatures? Thankfully, copying and pasting is not affected, it's just a display issue. While such a change might usually be welcome it's a bit of a mess when dealing with code.
Wondering if anyone can confirm they're seeing the same thing, and if there are any fixes for this (short of turning off website-defined fonts and browsing like it's 1999.)

I have a complex drawing in Keynote, which I need to resize. I can do this by making the drawing into a group, but unfortunately it contains many text labels, which do not resize when I change the size of the group. I can change the font size, but it's quite hard to get the new font size to look the same as the old one. What usually happens is that the new text is slightly larger than the text boxes, so I end up having to manually resize each one in order to make it readable again.
Usually I get around this by taking a screenshot and inserting it into the presentation as an image. However, in this case I need the image to have a transparent background. I tried using Keynote's Instant Alpha feature, but it left white in the interiors of letters like "O" and "a", and manually removing that is just as much work as manually resizing all the text boxes.
So is there some kind of method or workaround for resizing the text of a keynote drawing along with the other elements, while keeping the background transparent?

All text is rendered in a very distracting way that looks oversharpened with a strange color halo appearance. I tried playing with font smoothing adjuster and different resolutions, but I didn't find a satisfying solution. The same monitor has good text rendering with Linux and Windows (using different machines). Is there anything I'm missing?
I'm attaching a picture, but it's hard to see, you can see the shimmery halo around that dark icon though.

The old font cannot be deleted from that folder, either by dragging or by ⌘-delete. Nor can the newer version be dragged into the folder to replace the old version. I tried disabling System Integrity Protection, but that didn't help; the folder contents are still impervious to change.
Does anyone know a way to use a newer version of this typeface on macOS?

> Arie de Ruiter, who in 1995 was Head of Information Technology Development at Elsevier Science, made a proposal to the STI Pub group, an informal group of publishers consisting of representatives from the American Chemical Society (ACS), American Institute of Physics (AIP), American Mathematical Society (AMS), American Physical Society (APS), Elsevier, and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). De Ruiter encouraged the members to consider development of a series of Web fonts, which he proposed should be called the Scientific and Technical Information eXchange, or STIX, Fonts. All STI Pub member organizations enthusiastically endorsed this proposal, and the STI Pub group agreed to embark on what has become a twelve-year project. The goal of the project was to identify all alphabetic, symbolic, and other special characters used in any facet of scientific publishing and to create a set of Unicode-based fonts that would be distributed free to every scientist, student, and other interested party worldwide. The fonts would be consistent with the emerging Unicode standard, and would permit universal representation of every character. With the release of the STIX fonts, de Ruiter's vision has been realized.
What a weird.. *and fabulous* font. More info can be found here.

My question is whether permanently adding/removing new fonts (and now having around 100 fonts non-default fonts) have any impact/s on the *macOS* speed - whether the *macOS* has to load all the new fonts with opening certain Apps (or on the start-up), whether every font store some cache which remains after the font is removed and so on…

For example, I've selected "SF Pro Text", the top level "Typeface Family" and it shows light font variant in the display. In other fonts, it shows italics. It seens very random. I am developing a typeface and I want to make sure the "Regular" font is displayed to the customers. [
