I find that I generally cannot remove files on my main (hfs) external drive via Preview. I can remove them via a Finder window, and I can remove then from Terminal, just not Preview!
If they're on my main drive (the internal SSD on my Mac Mini), I can remove them via Preview without any problem.
Here's the directories (and security flags) for one file in question (foo.jpg):
ls -l -d / /Volumes/ss /Volumes/ss/pics /Volumes/ss/pics/misc
drwxr-xr-x 20 root wheel 640 Oct 12 2022 /
drwxrwxr-x+ 97 root wheel 3366 Jul 26 22:49 /Volumes/ss
drwxrwxr-x 33 sieler staff 1122 Jul 27 21:17 /Volumes/ss/pics
drwxrwxr-x 13 sieler staff 442 Jul 27 21:24 /Volumes/ss/pics/misc
-rw-r--r-- 1 sieler staff 3035137 Jul 19 12:40 foo.jpg
Attempts to remove via Previe (e.g., right-click, select 'Move to Trash'; or left click and hit command-backspace) get a popup:
You do not have permission to
move the file "foo.jpg" to the trash.
What's wrong with Preview? (And, can I fix it?)
My external drive is: macOS Extended (Journaled) I'm on Monterey (12.6.1)
***
**Update**: Oddly, Preview will let me rotate them and save them back in place, which effectively removes (and recreates) them, so it *has* access!
And, since I can Finder-remove, or Terminal/rm-remove, I clearly have the rights to remove the file (and to access the .Trash folder).
(Yes, the vast majority of other files on the drive are Preview removable.)

I have a strange issue with my Mac Mini with macOS Sequoia 15.5 installed.
When I run a SuperDuper backup, it backs up my boot drive to a target image on an external drive. No biggy. ut it's sending some files to the trash for some reason, and I cannot empty the trash because these files are in use.
I've contacted SuperDuper and they say they don't send anything to the trash. So this is some kind of OS housekeeping issue.
I've turned off iCloud and that didn't work. I automate two different backups every week so I can't reboot to empty the trash of some odd files.
How can I fix this? This isn't a SuperDuper issue, but a macOS issue.

I have hundreds of gigabytes of files that I manually (tried) to delete from an external hard drive. However I can't empty my trash, and no space has freed up on the drive.
When I try to empty my trash, I get an error saying that I can't, because some of the files are locked, or in use or I don't have permission. The Macos popup tells me I should manually locate and change the permissions of the offending file.
Here's the problem, there are 10s of thousands of files, so that is not realistic.
What hasn't worked:
Putting
rm -R
into my command line and dragging the offensive trash into my terminal.
Selecting trash files in question, clicking "get info" and unlocking them *still* doesn't let me right click and delete immediately.
Restarting my computer hasn't helped either. When I reconnect the drive, I still have no space freed and the junk files are still living in my trash folder... unable to be removed.
As things are now, I've exhausted all available solutions to reclaim this space on my drive.
My setup:
Macbook air, up to date with Big Sur 11.4

there are other trash folders per drive. What would be the most correct way of clearing those?
Is it just iterating over /Volumes
and deleting the .Trashes
on every volume and recreating it afterwards?
Is there official documentation on it, if so I couldn't find it.

I am almost totally ignorant in scripting, although I am a bit of a geek and several times I managed to edit and adapt code i found on the web, to perform simple but useful tasks that we use in mine and my team's work.
I am trying to find a solution to something that in my mind should be very easy, but obviously I lack fundamental knowledge to understand.
Given an amount of items selected in Finder, I'd like to use applescript to move to the trash any file of that selection that contains a text string in the file or folder name.
So far I have got this which will correctly move to the trash every item that I have got selected in Finder
tell application "Finder"
set selectItems to selection
delete (every item of selectItems)
end tell
If I try something like this though, it will return an error
tell application "Finder"
set selectItems to selection
delete (every item of selectItems whose name contains "String")
end tell
Would anyone be so generous to give me a solution to this problem, while also filling me in on what foundational knowledge I am missing in relation to it?
Many thanks in advance!!

Is it safe to use `trash-cli` on macOS?

## Introduction
The program [nnn](https://github.com/jarun/nnn) has a send-to-trash functionality, and it uses [trash-cli](https://github.com/andreafrancia/trash-cli) . I would like to use
nnn
and trash-cli
on macOS. Reading trash-cli
's homepage, I see it uses ~/.local/share/Trash/
, while macOS' Trash is ~/.Trash
.
I was thinking, I could create a symlink pointing to macOS' Trash. To test this, here is what I ran:
% cd ~/.local/share
% ln -s ~/.Trash Trash
% ls ~/.Trash
% touch deleteme
% mv deleteme Trash
% ls ~/.Trash
deleteme
So, it seems like this method works.
## Testing trash-cli
Indeed, when I installed trash-cli
, the command works (with the slight drawback of using a different format):
[nix-shell:/tmp]$ touch deleteme2
[nix-shell:/tmp]$ trash deleteme2
[nix-shell:/tmp]$ tree ~/.Trash/
/Users/redacted/.Trash/
├── deleteme
├── files
│ └── deleteme2
└── info
└── deleteme2.trashinfo
2 directories, 3 files
[nix-shell:/tmp]$ trash-list
2022-04-29 15:23:37 /private/tmp/deleteme2
However, when I tried running trash-empty
, it showed that it would delete other directories:
[nix-shell:/tmp]$ trash-empty
Would empty the following trash directories:
- /Users/redacted/.local/share/Trash
- /.Trash-501
- /System/Volumes/VM/.Trash-501
- /System/Volumes/Preboot/.Trash-501
- /System/Volumes/Update/.Trash-501
- /System/Volumes/xarts/.Trash-501
- /System/Volumes/iSCPreboot/.Trash-501
- /System/Volumes/Hardware/.Trash-501
- /System/Volumes/Data/.Trash-501
- /nix/.Trash-501
- /System/Volumes/Update/mnt1/.Trash-501
Proceed? (y/n) n
I believe these are all [user trashes](https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/252371) , as my user number is 501. However, it's still a bit worrying.
## My question
Is it safe to symlink .Trash
and use trash-cli
as normal?
## Edit 2022-04-30
I have clarified the context (nnn) in my introduction.

I recently upgraded my 2012 MacMini to Catalina. It was a bit of a nightmare as the internal drive wasn’t formatted to APFS. I imaged the drive and did a Time Machine backup then booted from the imaged drive, formatted the internal to APFS. Ran the Catalina installer file from the imaged drive and installed it on the internal drive. I then transferred all the data from the TM backup. It all seemed to work fine and I’m up and running.
The only issue is that It moved/copied a couple extra versions of user folders. I went in and cleaned/deleted them from the Users & Groups Sys Pref. When I go to empty the trash, it says the following for apparently 5 items that won’t delete.
>The operation can’t be completed because the item “Data” is in use.
>The operation can’t be completed because the item “com.apple.mail” is in use.
>The operation can’t be completed because the item “Containers” is in use.
>The operation can’t be completed because the item “Library” is in use.
>The operation can’t be completed because the item “acct name” is in use.
(account name redacted) 😊
I have tried rebooting the computer several times and tried the force empty all to no avail. Any help would be appreciated!!

The reason I want to disable it is that it is bound to a keyboard shortcut (OptShift Cmd Delete )and I cannot find a way to *disable* the shortcut (to prevent accidental invokes) instead of remapping it to something else. Or maybe I am missing something.
How to disable "Empty the Trash without confirmation dialog." of Finder or disable any shortcuts to it?

Are there any ways to remove them? Please note that I have already tried dragging it to the Trash bin, but it won't even go to the Trash bin. It' just stuck in my computer forever.

But I am unable to perform any operations whatsoever via the command line on the .Trash file in my home directory. (I do have admin privileges on the machine.) I can "ls -al" my home directory...
However, I _can_ see (and copy, deleted, etc.) the contents of my .Trash file via Finder, and could apparently manipulate its permissions. But, seemingly, nothing I can do with finder makes .Trash accessible via Terminal.
Can anyone explain?

Mysterious 518 Messages in iCloud: Hidden Second Trash or Bug?

I've noticed a peculiar issue with my iCloud account. Despite regularly deleting messages and emptying the trash, I consistently have 518 messages in iCloud that occupy space but aren't visible anywhere in my account. Here's what I've observed:
1. This number (518) remains constant month after month.
2. I've tried deleting all messages and emptying the trash.
3. I changed the setting from "Keep for 30 days" to "Keep for 1 year" to force the old deletion pop-up.
4. I've monitored the number of messages for several months, always returning to 518.
My theory is that there might be a second, hidden trash in iCloud for data recovery after deleting from the system trash. The process would be:
App > Trash > iCloud (hidden) > Permanent deletion after 30 days
Has anyone else experienced this? Do you know how to reset this to zero? Would disabling Messages in iCloud completely or using a web option help?
Any insights or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

On the 23rd of August 2024, all the files on my MacBook Pro 2022 M1's desktop were moved to the trash can and then deleted. The folders contained two years' worth of my work and personal documents. My life is now in shambles.
I've already discovered the following:
1. No copies can be retrieved from iCloud, and third-party apps like Disk Drill or Tenorshare are unable to do so as well.
2. A recovery firm has informed me that it's impossible to recover files from an M1 with SSD disks involved.
Question: Is there truly no company or tech person in the world who can recover these files? I'm not a millionaire, but I'm willing to go to great lengths to retrieve my files. Please advise me.

I'm pretty certain that the problem is related to the '*online-only*' feature of Dropbox. E.g. me deleting files that are in the cloud rather than stored on my hard drive.
I think the only way I could delete them would be to first restore them to their original folder, sync them with dropbox and then delete them again.
Surely there has to be a better way?

My 12 year old MacBook crashed (MacBook Pro mid 2012, running macOS Catalina), so I pulled the hard drive out to recover the data on it. I connected the old MacOS drive to my new MacBook as an external drive, I just removed it from my old Mac book, put it into a hard drive case and connected it as an external drive.
I was able to recover most of my data and see most of my folders, but I was not able to find the Trash folder on it. My question is very simple, where can I locate the Trash folder on this external MacOS drive? (It is the main trash folder that on the OS is indicated by the bin, i.e. the main trash folder). The hard drive is only has one partition with the OS on it.
I tried to check for it using CMD+Shift+. and searching for .Trash using CMD+Shift+G. I was not able to locate it.
any help is much appreciated.

How to view logs of deleted folders
2 days ago I edited some files on my iMac. I came back today and inexplicably there was no folder containing those files. I would like to know how to view reports of files deleted during this sort of time range. Does macOS have logs of deletions that are time stamped?

[**Note**: *Use caution applying old tools or methods to new systems.*]
Apple has deprecated all the tools (as well as secure empty trash) that used to overwrite files based on magnetic disk storage considerations. SSD don’t erase the underlying storage when the os deletes a file, so use encryption (which is now hardware accelerated and the default for all macOS systems).]
