I have a strange issue with my Mac Mini with macOS Sequoia 15.5 installed.
When I run a SuperDuper backup, it backs up my boot drive to a target image on an external drive. No biggy. ut it's sending some files to the trash for some reason, and I cannot empty the trash because these files are in use.
I've contacted SuperDuper and they say they don't send anything to the trash. So this is some kind of OS housekeeping issue.
I've turned off iCloud and that didn't work. I automate two different backups every week so I can't reboot to empty the trash of some odd files.
How can I fix this? This isn't a SuperDuper issue, but a macOS issue.

I've been encountering difficulties with my bootable external drive on my Apple Silicon M2.I can boot Successfully on M1 mac. I've tried creating the bootable drive using ASR, Carbon Copy Cloner, and SuperDuper, but unfortunately, the system doesn't boot up, displaying an error message indicating that the OS needs to be reinstalled on the selected disk.
Here are the steps I've taken so far:
Checked compatibility:
Ensured macOS version on the external drive is compatible with Apple Silicon.
Recreated the bootable drive:
Used ASR, Carbon Copy Cloner, and SuperDuper to recreate the bootable external drive.
Reset NVRAM/PRAM:
Attempted to resolve the issue by resetting NVRAM/PRAM.
Checked external drive connection:
Ensured proper connection and tried different ports and cables.
Checked for errors:
Ran Disk Utility from Recovery Mode to check and repair any disk-related issues.
Despite these efforts, the problem persists.
The external drive is formatted with the APFS file system, and I've verified that the cloning tools are up to date.
I would appreciate any insights or suggestions from the community on how to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with bootable external drives on Apple Silicon, and if so, how did you successfully address it?
I have tried Monterey, Ventura and Sonama as well.
Thank you in advance for your assistance!

SuperDuper! crashed recently, and when looking at the report I found
/Applications/Tools/*/SuperDuper!.app/Contents/MacOS/SuperDuper!
The surprising part is the
*
, which I've never seen before. Under what circumstances does macOS use this?
---
**Lots of background information**
While chasing down why SuperDuper! consistently hangs when quitting after doing a backup, I noticed a peculiar line in this .hang file:
From /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/SuperDuper!_2019-06-27-154852_taryn-Palantir-2904.hang
...
OS Version: Mac OS X 10.13.4 (Build 17E199)
Architecture: x86_64
Report Version: 26
Data Source: Stackshots
Command: SuperDuper!
Path: /Applications/Tools/*/SuperDuper!.app/Contents/MacOS/SuperDuper!
Identifier: com.blacey.SuperDuper!
Version: 3.2.5 (119)
...
Note the application's path. Putting aside the weirdness of an exclamation point in a path*, the asterisk at Tools/*/Superduper!.app has me completely perplexed.
I first checked other hang files to see if that was simply an artifact of the logger, but none show a similar behavior:
Command: Arduino
Path: /Volumes/VOLUME/Applications/Tools/Arduino1.8.9.app/Contents/MacOS/Arduino
Command: com.apple.WebKit.WebContent
Path: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/XPCServices/com.apple.WebKit.WebContent.xpc/Contents/MacOS/com.apple.WebKit.WebContent
Process: Console
Path: /Applications/Utilities/Console.app/Contents/MacOS/Console
The asterisk doesn't appear in the finder, nor in shell listings:
Palantir_ethernet:Tools taryn$ pwd
/Applications/Tools
Palantir_ethernet:Tools taryn$ ls -Al
total 129752

drwxr-xr-x@ 3 taryn admin 96 Oct 6 2015 TinkerTool.app/
...
(note the '@' by the permissions tells us that there are extended attributes on those files.)
I'd thought momentarily it was an instance of the -F arg of ls.
From 'man ls':
...
-F Display a slash (`/') immediately after each pathname that is a
directory, an asterisk (`*') after each that is executable, an at
sign (@') after each symbolic link, an equals sign (
=') after
each socket, a percent sign (`%') after each whiteout, and a ver-
tical bar (`|') after each that is a FIFO.
...
But that doesn't wash, the asterisk lands in a different spot:
Palantir_ethernet:Tools taryn$ ls -AlF SuperDuper/SuperDuper\!.app/Contents/MacOS/

Searching the net for stuff like 'MacOS application path asterisk' was fruitless, a few hits reminding us that '*' is a legal char in HFS paths, but you'll need to quote or escape it from the shell. Many hits on wildcard expansion.
So, while I'm still trying to understand the crash, this question is whether such a path element has any purpose.
In normal use, a UNIX OS would take that to mean "expand/enumerate all directories under 'Tools/' which contain a subpath like 'SuperDuper!.app/Contents/MacOS/SuperDuper!' ". Such a usage makes no sense in the context of a log entry that is reporting an explicit known location.
But HFS is a bit weird, in that it is exceptionally permissive of special chars in paths, provided the char is escaped or the path quoted when used from the shell or system calls.
I'm down a classic rabbit hole, I set out to understand a crash, and hours later, I'm still trying to understand how this stupid path got mis-parsed by the logger.
*I've always thought it was bad form to use special chars in paths and files, even though MacOS and HFS/APFS allow it.

What's the best way to use SuperDuper to back up multiple hard drives to partitions on a single drive?
Here's the setup I'm setting up: - Mac HD (500GB SSD) - Media HD (2TB SSD) - Daily Backup HD (3TB HDD, partitioned into a 2TB Daily Backup Mac HD, a 500GB Daily Backup Media HD, and an irrelevant 500GB Spare HD) - Time Machine HD, (4TB, but this drive isn't relevant for my question). Here's the setup I'm setting up:
- Mac HD (500GB SSD)
- Media HD (2TB SSD)
- Daily Backup HD (3TB HDD, partitioned into a 2TB Daily Backup Mac HD, a 500GB Daily Backup Media HD, and an irrelevant 500GB Spare HD)
- Time Machine HD, (4TB, but this drive isn't relevant for my question).
Using SuperDuper, what's the proper way to back up two separate drives to partitions on a single external drive? Can I back up my Mac HD and my Media HD at the same time? It'll be running automatically in the middle of the night, so speed isn't a concern. I've been backing up one drive M/W/F and the other T/T/S, but I'd like to switch to backing both drives up daily. With SuperDuper, can I schedule both to run at the same time?
Also: Since my Mac and Media drives are SSD but my backup drive is a partitioned HDD, is there anything I should be careful of when I format the backup drive?
EDIT: I'm specifically asking about backing up multiple hard drives to separate partitions on a single drive. I already have an external 3TB drive partitioned for backups. If my Mac hard drive dies, I like having a bootable backup ready to go in an instant without needing to restore it first. If my Media drive dies, I like having a backup ready to go without needing to restore it first. I also have another external drive for Time Machine. I'm religious about backing everything up (safety first, as they say). I just want to make sure it's fine to back up two hard drives to two partitions on a single drive at the same time.

MS-Office has detected that the HDD has been upgraded to a SSD and is now read only until the Product Key is entered.
**Is the product key in one of the files, which can be read?**
**How can the product key be recovered from the existing drive?**
OSX: El Capitan 10.11.6 Office 2011
This question is slightly different from:
How can I recover my MS Office 2011 product key?
in the sense that I am seeking to pull the key from the existing system files or database. I have tried the .plist solution, however, the activation problem persists: not sure why copying the .plist file to the SSD a second time would work, when Superduper copied it over along with a .lock file.
This question is slightly different from:
How can I find the product key of Office 2011 after restoring from backup?
1. Device is Macbook Pro and not a iMac
2. Hard drive is not recovered (ghosted via SuperDuper)
Any techniques to extract the product key is appreciated. The laptop was purchased second hand and had office installed / activated on the original HDD. Office must check to see if drive has been changed.

I have working, bootable backup on external drive called "SuperDuper" and my internal drive where I want it restored is "Macintosh HD".
I just reinstalled MacOS to make sure it is not a software issue, installed SuperDuper (and nothing else) and still I have this issue:
As you can see all disks are available here, so I'm picking up "SuperDuper" and then:
Wait, what, where is my "Macintosh HD"? :o **How can I restore my backup to my internal SSD when I can't select the disk?**
What I tried so far:
1. booting from SuperDuper bootable disk - it works but it's slow as
hell, but the backup is solid and working so here's no issue,
2. recovering from SuperDuper to Macintosh HD while booted from SuperDuper external disk - it restored everything but Macintosh HD was unmounted and I couldn't boot the system (flashing directory icon with question mark on start)
3. fixing (first aid) the recovered disk in recovery mode (COMMAND + SHIFT + R on
startup), still unmounted,
4. formatting the disk and trying on fresh MacOS install - no luck,
screens above.
Any ideas what the heck is going on here? How can I restore my system? Do I get it wrong or I really should try restoring it after booting from SuperDuper first? And what to do with the unmounted disk? Disk utilities could see Macintosh HD but under it there was dsk02s1 or something like this and it was unmounted and I didn't know how to mount it...

I'm trying to transfer a 4 TB Time Machine backup from one USB 3 hard drive to another. I'm currently using SuperDuper to do it, and it's going to take upwards of two full days to perform the copy, if not longer.
That's significantly slower than the usual maximum speed for copying over USB 3, and I suspect that what's slowing things down is the overhead of copying each file individually, rather than just copying the raw data on the drive, sector by sector.
Given that I just need to duplicate a partition on to another drive:
1. Would it result in a usable partition if I did a sector-by-sector copy?
2. Would that be faster than using SuperDuper?
3. And if yes to both of the above, what are some methods I could use to do that?
I already tried using Disk Utility's restore feature to clone feature, but it got about 5% of the way in and then failed with a weird error about a drive being busy. So I don't think it's reliable enough, and it has no option for resuming where it left off. But that said, it did seem like it was going much faster, and if it didn't fail, it would've taken around 8 hours for it to finish.
edit: for posterity, the reason Disk Utility failed to copy the drive is because my destination drive was dying and loaded with bad sectors. Under normal circumstances it would probably work and be about as fast as
dd
. However I like Allan's answer the most because, in case something causes dd
to stop mid-copy, you can restart it from where it left off.

I'm currently attempting to debug a Super Duper startup problem where it takes between 10-15 seconds to start up on my machine when wireless/internet is turned on. I have communicated with Dave from Shirt Pocket who advised that Super Duper usually has a lag like this when there are network drives mounted on my machine (i.e. Super Duper would attempt to scan these resulting in the lag). When I turn wifi off, Super Duper starts up immediately.
I don't have any network drives mounted on my machine and so this has all been very mysterious.
Last night, I installed WireShark and tried to see if there's anything interesting going over the wire. I noticed that roughly around the time I start Super Duper up, I see the following in WireShark:
Source | Destination | Protocol | Length | Info
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My IP | Router IP | DNS | 66 | Standard query 0xd574 A System
Router IP | My IP | DNS | 66 | Standard query 0xd574 Server Failure
The server failure is usually returns between 10-20 seconds (hence the correlation with the Super Duper start up lag). The request from my machine to the router sometimes happens repeatedly (i.e. 2 or 3 times) before the notice of failure returns from the router.
I'm not very familiar with using WireShark and reading information off packets in this way (indeed, it's very odd that this is causing any issue with Super Duper at all given that it shouldn't be going out on the network to look for stuff as I don't have any network drives setup at all on my Mac) - my question here is: does anyone know what is happening here and why do I get a server failure from my router? Internet is working with no apparent issues.
In case it becomes relevant: this is on a 2012 MacBook Air with OSX 10.9.4 plus the latest versions of Super Duper and WireShark.

xpcproxy using all my bandwidth
I have recently installed an SSD in my iMac and restored my backup using SuperDuper!. Since then, `xpcproxy` seems to randomly download stuff and uses all my bandwidth for minutes on end. What would be the reason? I am running the latest version of El Capitan (yesterday's update).

What does "[Update Needed]" mean when attempting to boot from an encrypted backup?

When I attempt to boot from an external drive that is an encrypted SuperDuper! mirror of my internal hard drive, I get a login screen that's missing my account an instead has an account called "[Update Needed]", with no user picture.
I understand that this is a known issue with FileVault, but it is not clear from what I've read whether it is necessary to do anything about this, or if it can just be ignored (after all, the disk is a backup, and the source seems fine).
Can I just ignore this and deal with it when and if I need to use the backup? Is this a sign of problems on the source drive that just aren't showing symptoms there yet (that drive is not, yet, encrypted)?

Are there any solutions to enable my backup to be both encrypted and also bootable? I currently use FileVault 2 to encrypt my main SSD, and if I try booting from that (i.e. just booting up my computer) it asks for my password. If I try to boot from a bootable external disk (which happens to be encrypted) will it just ask for the disk password on boot [that is, after I select that as the boot disk], similarly to how I would be asked to enter a password to unlock the SSD encrypted with FileVault 2?

I also have two Transporters , one on-site and another off-site. I would like to backup to the on-site Transporter. The Transporter Library shows up as a folder. I would like to create a sub-folder and then use SuperDuper! to backup to that folder.
However SuperDuper only allows you to backup to a mounted volume.
Is there a way on OS X to make a directory appear as a volume so it would appear in the to: drop down of SuperDuper! or would the recommended way to be backup to a Sparse Bundle Disk Image located in the Transporter folder?

Luckily I have a recent backup (from last week) that I made with SuperDuper so I can actually plug it into my wife's Mac and boot it up -- the drive is a bootable clone -- and continue my work. Since I made the backup of course there were changes that I made to files, most of which were uploaded to Dropbox. When I boot up the external HD, what will Dropbox do? Will it automatically update the files to the most recent version?

It's quite easy to start two instances of any app from the command line. In this case:
open -n /Applications/SuperDuper\!.app
However, I know that this isn't always a good idea because most applications are not meant to share resources with themselves. I was hoping to back up two different drives with SuperDuper! (a hard drive cloning application) at the same time. I was wondering if this is safe.

The main drive is 500 GB but I would like to replace it with a 1 TB drive by cloning it, possibly with SuperDuper. Is it possible to trick Time Machine to continuing on with the same sparsebundle rather than starting a fresh, new backup? I don't have much space left on my Time Capsule so a whole new backup would be difficult.

How can I select a complete folder instead of a single file while cloning user SuperDuper in OSX for backup?
I want to select the who lang comp lab folder for backing up (cloning) using SuperDuper software in OSX but it just allows me to select one file as an image. lang comp lab folder is inside mgserver folder which is a shared one. I have attached some photos which can depict this much better.
