Can I use my keyboard to control the volume of speakers connected to my macbook by a usb c hub?

I found out that I can't control the volume of speakers connected to my monitor via HDMI using volume controls in the OS. There are countless questions about this issue, the most upvoted one being https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/336750/how-do-i-control-macbook-volume-when-a-dp-display-is-connected . However there are some USB C hubs for sale that include a 3.5mm audio port. I was thinking that if I buy one of these I would be able to control the volume of speakers through the OS. However in one of the reviews for one of the hubs ([this one](https://www.amazon.com/Belkin-MultiPort-Adapter-Pass-Through-Charging/dp/B091KKB74Y)) , someone mentioned that they were unable to control the volume using the OS. So does this mean all USB C hubs also have this issue? I could only find discussions concerning HDMI or DisplayPort. The reason for all of this is I want to easily control my volume using my keyboard and I also want to limit the number of cables I have connected to my MacBook as much as possible. P.S. I know there are software solutions. I need to avoid a software solution and just need a firm "yes" or "no, because etc.."

I would like to be able to change the output device sometimes, for example to switch between headphones and speakers, without having to use the mouse. I've figured out how to focus the 'status menu' area (top-right of screen) with a keyboard shortcut (default is Ctrl+Fn+F8), and can select the sound menu. But when I try to select items in that menu, pressing the arrow keys will only alter the volume (even with modifiers like Cmd or Alt). Even page up/page down! How can I access the rest of the menu with the keyboard and change the output device?

I installed windows 10 and everything was running smoothly until a day later when my earphones suddenly started emitting a high pitch noise whenever any sound was played at a constant level. It is pretty much unusable unless I want tinnitus :( I'm not sure what the issue is, I’ve tried reinstalling the drivers but that hasn’t helped. I have cirrus logic cs8409 (ab 51) drivers and when I switch drivers to generic or endpoint, I get no audio.

With the introduction of iOS 15 and focus mode, I have once again wished that I could find a simple way (on a standard, non-jailbroken iPhone) to temporarily silence all sounds, including alarms, for some period of time. The main use case here, is that I have a lot of daily alarms that are always set, but some times, I am at the theater or in a special meeting, where I do not want them to go off. Turning the alarms off and on, or giving them a silent ringtone, is not really a viable option. I'd love a control panel switch or focus mode setting that could handle this, if there was one. A fancy shortcut automation might be an option, but I'm guessing that it would still be a bit difficult to make generic enough and reliable. Using a non-Apple app for Alarms, might be one possible approach, as I think that would be silenced, but that solution isn't ideal since most of my workflow relies on the built in alarm functionality at the moment. Does anyone know how to accomplish this (now or in the future)? ***EDIT***: Although the list of active, recurring alarms does not change all the time, it does change frequently enough, that I'd prefer a solution that could silence all enabled alarms and then un-silence that same list without needing to maintain the list, simply because it will be error prone. As much as I like Apple products in general, the lack of a real "theater" silent mode in 2021 is completely baffling.

Any idea why this is happening or how I can fix it? Here's my system: - Mac mini 2020 (M1) - Ventura 13.3.1 - KEF LSX II speakers (connected through USB-C).

My friend plugged his iPhone into it, with no issues. Not sure how this is happening. I’m using a genuine Apple cable, I’m running the latest version of iOS, I’ve tried restarting, and nothing works. Extremely frustrating situation so any help is appreciated.

Windows has this in its native mixer and but Mac just combines both in dual-mono as one device with no panning control. Blackhole also cannot do this and it's not clear if any of the Rogue Amoeba software can as most of their stuff seems focused on effects and complex routing between apps.

Disable the physical Silent Mode switch on iPhone SE 2020?
I keep missing calls because the Silent Mode hardware toggle (outside left edge) keeps flipping inadvertently. 👉 Is there a way to disable that switch, to prevent my iPhone SE from ever going into silent mode? When I need silence, I can simply shutdown the iPhone.

I'm utilizing an external sound amplifier over usb to enhance the audio output of my passive shelf speakers. However, I've encountered an issue with the volume control when I set the sound output to SPDIF (the specific name of the amplifier). In macOS, adjusting the volume control has no effect. Essentially, the amplifier takes control of the volume adjustment, rendering the macOS volume control ineffective. Consequently, I am compelled to rely on the physical knob on the amplifier to adjust the volume. System Settings > Sound Additionally, when I select the amplifier as the output device, the Output Volume option in the system settings becomes disabled. Do you have any suggestions for software solutions that would allow me to regain control of the volume settings through my operating system? I'm using **Mac Mini** with M2 chip and my amp is **Fosi Audio Da-2120A**

Essentially, I want to get the exact audio output volume in macOS without any rounding to an integer. I am already aware that I can execute the following to get an output volume:
osascript -e "output volume of (get volume settings)"
However, the problem with this volume is that it is very evidently rounded to the nearest integer. This can be proven using the knowledge that each increment of volume on macOS is 1/16 = 0.0625 = 6.25%. Output of above command given the number of bars highlighted starting from a volume of 0: | Number of bars | Expected volume | Command output | | -------------: | --------------: | -------------: | | 0 | 0.00 | 0 | | 1 | 6.25 | 6 | | 2 | 12.50 | 13 | | 3 | 18.75 | 19 | | 4 | 25.00 | 25 | | 5 | 31.25 | 31 | | 6 | 37.50 | 38 | | ... | ... | ... | This table is quite indicative that the volume is not an integer but is being rounded when outputted through osascript. As such, is there any way I can retrieve the actual macOS volume with the fractional/decimal component included? It doesn't have to be using built-in methods. I would be happy to consider the use of libraries like Python's pyobjc, too.

I've found this issue and various discussions online about this, but no obvious "just do this", so I'm wandering over here from ServerFault to ask this. Is there a way to disable or hard-set the input level on a mic? In the Sound preferences on the Input tab if I click on the device and set a level and then start talking it picks up the sound and then start to auto-adjust the mic input level. This causes issues when talking with someone on Lync/Skype/etc because one minute the sound is fine and then if you raise your voice for a second and then lower it back down (or shift around in your chair) the auto-adjust causes the other party to think your whispering or yelling. I'd like to be able to disable the auto-adjust if possible. Yes/No? NOTE: The issue is *similar* this one: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/95688/imac-osx-10-8-4-volume-adjusts-by-itself but rather on the input side and not the output side for me.

They even show you a nifty chart of your listening. I use my headphones on both my iPhone and my Mac, the latter when streaming video. However as far as I can tell, the two don't work together at all and the Mac may not have this? It seems like kind of an omission for a company that likes making its stuff work together well. I am just curious if I am missing something and if the two can work together to track this data.

I usually have music playing on my Mac while wearing earphones. And I often change the volume with my wired keyboard keys. I imagine that it is an issue with the keyboard itself, but sometimes (rarely), when I increase the volume, despite the fact that I'm no longer pressing the keys, the volume still goes up to the max. And of course, my earphones explode on me before I realise what's going on. To solve this, rather than changing my volume-adjusting habits, I was wondering if there is some way to put a volume hard-limit in the system. Like, "whatever happens, don't let me go beyond 70%" or something. OSX Mavericks.

How do I get a lower sound-volume than the system minimum of 13% volume for headsets on an iPhone?
When I change the sound, there is a threshold of 13% where I cannot lower the volume any further without losing it. I tested this with the Shortcuts app: when I put it down to 12%, you hear nothing. When I change the sound, there is a threshold of 13% where I cannot lower the volume any further without losing it. I tested this with the Shortcuts app: when I put it down to 12%, you hear nothing. enter image description here The 7%, 5% and 3% would be the ones that I would like to use also for my headset, but they work only with the loudspeakers. Thus, there is still some space left that I can shift the volume button down. Here you see the 13%. enter image description here You will hit 13% also without the app, just the first sound you hear when you use the buttons of your headset, checked. The app is not needed to reach these 13% well enough, neither is the volume bar needed to fine-tune this to 13%. And in big screen after holding the press on the volume here, you get a better fine-tuning, 13% in the screeshot: enter image description here That small space that is left at the 13% bottom puts all volume to 0 volume. In a quiet room or when you have noise cancelling ear muffs on top of (in-)ear headphones, the minimum volume is still too loud. I have - an iPhone 7, and I read from a [comment](https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/348609/381223) that on an iPhone 8, you might not have this issue anymore. It is unclear, though, whether that comment was about headphones. - iOS 15.7, but this should be needless to say since this problem has always been there. Workarounds so far: - One workaround is to put in some ear-plugs, use headphones on top of them, and then just put the sound-volume slightly louder than the minimum just to hear enough, but that does not work for (in-)ear headphones. - Another "calm morning" trick against the loudness is to put headphones not on your ears, but on your temples next to them, and make it louder so that you hear it like it came from a radio out there. These workarounds work, but it should be easier than that. What I am searching for is an App or setting that allows changing the the system volume finer than the OS menu (= the buttons of the headphones) allows it, and below the threshold of 13 %. When I do not use headphones, but the normal loudspeaker, I can go down to whatever percentage and it will always change with it. Therefore, it is just a problem of the headset. The threshold is 13% both for a Bluetooth headset and a cable headset. In some way, this not a duplicate of [Can I set the volume on my iPhone lower than the slider goes?](https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/27825/can-i-set-the-volume-on-my-iphone-lower-than-the-slider-goes) , since that is about a missing fine-tuning lower than the slider goes, while I cannot even tune anything in rough 1% steps at the bottom 12 %. The other question might help others, and thanks to the answers there, I knew about the [Shortcuts app](https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/420339/381223) trick and the [full screen volume handler](https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/348609/381223) trick. How to get a lower sound volume than the system minimum of 13% volume for headsets on an iPhone? #### PS: [for brightness, it works](https://screenrant.com/iphone-display-brightness-lower-minimum-how/) There is the same problem with the default screen brightness that is too light in the full darkness, but that can be put lower than the lowest default brightness by going to: --> Settings --> Accessibility. Then: - either you go to: --> Display & Text Size --> Reduce White Point (I have it at 90%) - or you go to --> Zoom --> Zoom Filter But in the Accessibility settings, I could not find out where to tweak the sound to a lower level.
