Dropping a file with AirDrop results in Date Last Opened set to now

I AirDropped a file from an app on my Phone to my new laptop running Sequoia. The **Date Last Opened** was set to the time of transfer. The file was *not* opened on the phone (it’s a newly-generated pdf that offers to be shared by AirDrop, email, etc.). This is new behavior. In OS 13, the Date Last Opened was blank, which is far better for helping me separate unread from read files, including by scripts. Can this new behavior be undone? Is it simply a bug?

Suddenly my MacBook appears on AirDrop as "myusername iPhone", myusername being the name I use to login to my Mac. I gave names to my iPhone and MacBook. So when I tried to AirDrop something from one to the other, the correct device name would appear on the Airdrop choose-destination window. Both AirDrops are set to Contacts Only. Suddenly (oh alright, a few months ago) the MacBook to iPhone route works as before, but when sending from my iPhone, the MacBook appears in the list as "myusername iPhone" twice, once under the People heading and once under the Devices heading. That's not what I want and my MacBook isn't a phone anyway. The MacBook is MacOS Catalina 10.15.7. System Preferences -> AppleID shows the correct device name at bottom left of the window. The iPhone is iOS 16.6. The transfers work OK (always, actually) but the wrong name really irritates me. Any way to fix this? P.S. The only change I can think of that I made recently was to use the option "Private WiFi Address" in the WiFi settings of my iPhone. But I don't see how that could affect the name of the MacBook. UPDATE: I tried the actions 1-7 in the answer by bmike but with no luck. Result: same problem - laptop shows up as "myusername iPhone". Thanks anyway. I also tried the following: Told both devices to forget my network; Turned that router off; Took both devices to a different and brand new router and wifi network; Connected both to that network; Tried sending from phone to laptop. Result: same problem - laptop shows up as "myusername iPhone".

What Firewall settings needs to be enabled for Airdrop?
Which option in the built-in firewall in System Preferences needs to be enabled to allow AirDrop to receive files on a Mac? The Mac can currently see iPhone's and other devices in Airdrop, but does not show on the iPhone as a target for Airdrop.

I recently bought a new MacBook M4 laptop to replace my aged and slow MacBook Pro that is stuck running Catalina (10.15.7). I wanted to transfer files using Air Drop, which works, but the name appearing on the old Mac is not that name I set on the new. It defaults to the generic MacBook Pro. When using my iPhone 13 and new-ish iPad, the Air Drop name appears correctly. I've tried re-entering the name and restarting both Macs but that does not correct the problem. Is there something else I could try. Perhaps, the Catalina version of Air Drop has a bug that prevents the correct name from being displayed. One other factoid is that the Drop Box name appearing on all of the other devices is also MacBook Pre even though I've changed that name, as well.

Then I asked if he would send me what he had shot. I switched my AirDrop to Everyone and accepted his AirDrop transfer. Is that alone enough to facilitate transferring a keystroke logger or other bugging software? It was noisy and I was distracted but I'm pretty sure my phone remained in the Photos app the entire time, including after he sent his photos (meaning, the Files app did not open on my iPhone, which would happen if he had AirDropped a file using the Files app).

This has worked before in the past but I don't know why it doesn't work now. I used to be able to turn Airdrop on/off on my iPhone by: 1. Swiping up from the bottom of my phone 2. Pressing and holding the module that has options for Airplane mode, WiFi, etc. (image of what I'm talking about here on google ) For some reason, now when I press and hold that module, it doesn't open up to let me turn Airdrop on/off or turn on my personal hotspot. I've tried powering off/on my phone, and closing all apps but nothing is working. I don't know what else to try. Is there some app that I installed that might have prevented this from working as usual? What can I do to make this simple function work again?

Say I have a video or even a photo stored in my iPhones's camera roll(the Photos app). 1) I save it to Files(inside a folder) 2) Connect the phone to my Mac 3) Copy the enclosing folder using the Finder>iPhone>Files tab 4) Now I have the file on my computer Now... lets do the same, but with AirDrop 1) Select the file from the Photos app 2) Airdrop to my Mac. 3) Now I have a second copy of the file on my computer On first glance they look the same: same name and the byte count is(for the most part) the exact same. But, if I compare the two files with the command 'diff' it says they are different. Using an application to compare files byte-by-byte reveals that the top part, the header, is what differs. The files will be 99% the same. Does anyone know the specifics of how Airdrop and copying to Files causes the difference? There are also cases where the files differ in byte count. I would like to find a way to identify these duplicates and delete them. Ios version: 15.5 Iphone XS max thx

Essentially, I'm looking for a feature similar to the Continuity feature that lets me copy and paste from all of my own devices but for devices that are not logged in into the same iCloud account. When working together on a project with someone else side by side, it would be super helpful if there was a way to quickly share something, be it a paragraph of text, an image, or a slide in Keynote, without having to save it to a file and then Airdrop the file to the other person. Is there any way to copy/paste from one device to another where the two devices are not logged in to the same iCloud account?

I dislike the Downloads folder. I don't use it, and whenever something goes there it's lost forever because I never remember that folder exists and so never remember to look in there. I use Desktop for everything: screenshots, browser downloads, folders full of random stuff I've yet to put in the correct section of my personal folder, etc. I'd like AirDrop to behave that way as well. I couldn't find anything in System Settings to change the AirDrop location. I found [this](https://www.idownloadblog.com/2017/03/03/change-airdrop-destination-folder-mac/) , but the very first step is to download some script from GitHub, and to be quite honest I stopped reading after that; I hate sites that require me to download random stuff in order to get my Mac to work the way I want it to. **Is there any way to make AirDrop files I receive go directly to Desktop?**

I want to keep the "MacOS Sonoma" in the title because there are hundreds of obsolete Q&A pages or pages about the iOS version of this issue floating around the internet which I have weeded through without finding an answer. Somebody I assume to be a neighbor regularly shows up in my AirDrop menu, and usually loads up faster than my own devices: enter image description here The top option is my other computer, the bottom one is the intrusive device This obviously creates safety issues, as I do not wish to send a stranger personal documents. I also wonder if my neighbors and anyone in the neighbourhood can see my face and full name show up when they use AirDrop, which I would obviously prefer to avoid. I have found an Apple help page explaining how to only show up for friends and contacts in the iOS version of AirDrop , but the desktop computer help page doesn't go into very much details about how to do the same. A lot of users seem to have a similar complaint about the risks of the current process. **How do I restrict who can connect to my AirDrop and whose machines I can AirDrop to?**

My wife and I both have Iphone 8 running 11.4 (or at least mine is 11.4) Very weird behavior that I noticed happened recently. I usually set my Airdrop to "Contacts Only" and leave it as such. I remember being able to send/receive photos or videos between our phones in the past using Airdrop. However, yesterday, I had to set my Airdrop to "Everyone" so her phone could see my phone to send photos/videos. Why did the behavior change? She is a contact in my contact list. I even tested to make sure when I called, my contact name/photo pops up and vice versa.

macOS Big Sur (11.6.1) on a late-2013 MacBook Air. iOS 15.1 on an iPhone SE (1st generation) AirDrop works from the MBA to the iPhone, but not from the iPhone to MBA. When trying to send a photo from the iPhone to the MBA, the MBA appears on the iPhone as an AirDrop destination (i.e., the MBA is "seen" or "discovered"). When selected, the MBA icon shows "Waiting," but the transmission doesn't occur. In the opposite direction (MBA > iPhone) AirDrop works correctly. Both the MBA and iPhone connect and operate correctly, and both are connected to the same wifi network. Bluetooth is enabled on both, and on the MBA *sudo pkill blued* has been run in the Terminal, and */Library/Preferences/com.Apple.Bluetooth.plist* has been trashed (and automatically recreated). Until last week, AirDrop worked bidirectionally, as it has on these two devices for years. I cannot identify a specific update (on either the MBA or the iPhone) after which AirDrop failed. I've restarted both machines, force-restated the iPhone, and signed out of iCloud and then in again on both. No change is noted. What else might I try?
