Can I connect the Macbook Pro to one of these two computers, use the Roxio Titanium software on my Macbook Pro, but burn the DVD on one of the Superdrives?
I'm looking at purchasing Roxio Toast Titanium 19, but open to suggestions for other software. I won't be doing a large amount of DVD authoring, just hobby stuff.
Thanks!

I have a 2020 MacBook Air running Ventura 13.2 and would like to use an old LG CD reader ("Portable Super Multi Drive") to read a CD. But when I plug it in (and, for good measure, also plug the drive's cable's extra USB-A cable into a power source to make sure it's getting enough power), the CD spins vigorously as it should (i.e., there is enough power flowing to it, and it recognizes that it has been plugged in) but no disk mounts on my laptop.
I tried
diskutil list
, but it did not appear there either.
I suspect the problem is that I am missing the driver for this particular LG drive. But I was unable to find a way to download such a driver from LG or any other source on the internet.
How can I make this drive work with my laptop (whether by finding the appropriate driver or by using some other tool -- ideally FOSS)? (I am happy for it to be either GUI or CLI; all I want to do is to be able to copy data from the CD to my laptop.)

I've been asked to digitize a box of old CDs and move them onto an external SSD. For playback and data transfer, I've been using a MacBook Pro with an ASUS external disk drive. I also have access to a Windows desktop PC with an internal disk drive.
Last week, I successfully digitized several CDs using both the MacBook and the PC. I can still play those files normally off the external SSD. But when I returned to my project this week, the MacBook/ASUS setup was suddenly no longer recognizing those same CDs -- nothing but my startup disk and external hard drive showed up in Disk Utility. I tried loading a CD to the PC, and it displayed .cda files rather than the .aiffs or .wavs it had displayed previously. I experimented with several other CDs; the problem occurred not only for CDs I'd already digitized, but also for ones I hadn't touched yet. Again, as of last week these CDs were recognized by both Mac and Windows as carrying .aiff and .wav files, which I was able to copy to the SSD with no problem.
I tried fidgeting with the ASUS drive, and after awhile, Disk Utility did finally recognize one of the CDs. When I opened the CD in Finder, it displayed a list of .aiff files as anticipated. However, when I tried to test a data transfer by copying a single .aiff from the CD to the desktop, no dice -- just an endless "Estimating time to copy" notice, and a very sluggish Finder which eventually had to be relaunched. Similarly, neither VLC nor QuickTime could play the file, and both went non-responsive/had to be force quit when playback was attempted.
In terms of purely just recovering the audio data, I can try using the PC setup to rip the CDs; I'm aware .cdas are a container/metadata format which don't carry any audio information, but I believe I should still be able to rip using Windows Media Player. As for the Mac setup, though, I'm very curious to know what went wrong? Should I try to hunt down an old CD player to check on playback that way? Any insight appreciated, cheers!

Will it work with the newer **Macbook Pro/Air** series with **Apple Silicon/Intel** processors?

I have a 2011 17" MacBook Pro with a 1TB HDD installed and running the latest OSX. I am looking at installing a SSD in the original HD bay for my OS and Programs and moving the 1TB drive to the optical bay. My current HDD location says it has a link speed of 6Gb/s and negotiated link speed of 3Gb/s and the optical drive says it has a link speed of 6Gb/s with a negotiated speed of 1.5Gb/s.
So my question is twofold. First, will my current drive work correctly in the optical drive bay and secondly, can I install a 1TB in the optical bay caddy? Most of the adapters specify up to 500Gb.

LG "Slim Portable DVD Writer" Model GP55EX70 plugged in with blank CD. Tried to burn a playlist to CD and MacOS said "No supported Disk burners found"
https://www.devicemag.com/lg-slim-portable-dvd-writer-on-mac/ says drivers would be automatically loaded when the drive is plugged in. But whoever wrote that page is goofy—he says if the Mac doesn't recognize the drive I should reformat it "ExFAT" (!?!)
I don't recall whether I ever burned a disk with this drive. I do know that I used it to import dozens of audio CDs and to watch at least one DVD, but all on earlier OS versions.
Neither Disk Utility nor Finder shows the drive connected. It's on a USB-C to A converter which has worked fine with other USB-A peripherals.

I've searched around the nets, and it looks like I may be experiencing a relatively common problem, but I don't want to jump to conclusions. Unfortunately, all the threads I've found are filled with "me too, me too", and not a lot in terms of actual help.
What tools can I use, or tests can I run, to try to diagnose (and perhaps even solve) the problem myself before I give up and replace the drive?

We've used Remote Disc to access a DVD reader attached to one computer on a LAN before. Now that we're all 'work from home', we've got a VPN setup that creates peer-to-peer connections between all of our location and all normal traffic flows fine across it.
However, from my computer, I can't "Remote Disc" to a DVD drive located on another users location which is connected via the VPN. Each 'location' is its own LAN. Example 192.168.2.0/24, 192.168.3.0/24, 192.168.4.0/24, etc
Is there some clever way to make this work. We have a use case where the DVD burner is needed in one location, but reading the disc is required in another.
As of right now when I click "Remote Disc" it only works from a computer on the LAN the DVD burner is attached to. When I click "Remote Disc" from a remote location, nothing shows up even though we're all connected via the VPN network.

It has a button on the drawer, but it's vary tiny, and it requires a push in the opposite direction of opening. It's so thin that I have to pick it up off the table to push it, and I have to push hard enough and not too hard. And if I'm not fast enough, the slight pressure is enough to prevent opening.

I have two external USB optical drives, both burners, one that will work with DVDs and CDs, the other that will also handle BDs (Blu-ray Discs). I use these sometimes with MakeMKV. Recently I had an issue with reading a BD with MakeMKV and had to force-quit MakeMKV. I tried to eject the BD, but Disk Utilities would not because it was in use. (I remember at one point I found a way to still eject it, but I was unable to use that drive to read anything until I rebooted because the OS still saw it as in use.) I rebooted.
On reboot the OS recognized the BD in the drive and it came up in Finder. But I still heard a fair amount of activity from the drive. It's no longer making noise, but the access LED on the drive is still flashing. I've had this happen before, where I have discs in either drive, usually DVDs or BDs, and I hear movement in the drive even when I haven't been using any software to access that drive for hours or even a day or more.
So it seems that something is accessing my external USB optical drives even when I'm not using any software to do this.
How can I find out what program is trying to access discs in my optical drive?

How to make an ISO image of only the Windows (iso9660) track of a hybrid CD-ROM?

I have an old hybrid CD-ROM made of two track : on Windows only the ISO9960 track is visible and mounted, and on macOS only the HFS track is visible and mounted. This is how the CD appears in the Terminal using
df
and diskutil
:
iMac:VINTAGE ouafouaf$ df -k
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity iused ifree %iused Mounted on
...
/dev/disk4s1s2 330576 330576 0 100% 99 4294967180 0% /Volumes/Dragor le dragon
iMac:VINTAGE ouafouaf$ diskutil list
...
/dev/disk4 (external, physical):
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: CD_partition_scheme *778.1 MB disk4
I want to make an ISO image that is usable under Windows (XP). I tried to with dd
and different attempts:
dd if=/dev/disk4s1s2 of=Dragor1.iso bs=2k
dd if=/dev/disk4 of=Dragor2.iso bs=2k
dd if=/dev/disk4s1 of=Dragor3.iso bs=2k
- case 1: I obtain a file of about 330MB, which I can mount on macOS but not on Windows. It appears that this is only the HFS track. Note that the image I get with Disk Utility (.cdr file) is about the same size
- case 2: I obtain a file of about 760Mo, which I can not mount at all
- case 3: I obtain a file of about 660Mo, that I can mount on both macOS and Windows (so it contains both tracks)
So far so good (even if I don't really understand the meaning of s1
or s1s2
)... But for the use under Windows I don't need the HFS track. I have many images to create for using them in a Windows XP virtual machine, and I don't want to allocate too much disk space: how can I make an ISO image of the ISO9660 track only ?
I tried making the image directly under Windows, but the tools I have tried all make an image of the entire disk, HFS track included.

I've never seen it before. I assume it's from some 3rd party utility but I can't think what. I doubt it's an Apple system utility, as it seems to have [visually] hijacked F12, rather than the default Eject button. [I say visually, because all it does is beep when I actually press F12, it doesn't actually function as Eject. The real Eject key still works.] Selecting Open Superdrive from the menu item itself does open the drawer.
Has anyone any idea what this might belong to, or how to get rid of it?
