I've been asked to digitize a box of old CDs and move them onto an external SSD. For playback and data transfer, I've been using a MacBook Pro with an ASUS external disk drive. I also have access to a Windows desktop PC with an internal disk drive. Last week, I successfully digitized several CDs using both the MacBook and the PC. I can still play those files normally off the external SSD. But when I returned to my project this week, the MacBook/ASUS setup was suddenly no longer recognizing those same CDs -- nothing but my startup disk and external hard drive showed up in Disk Utility. I tried loading a CD to the PC, and it displayed .cda files rather than the .aiffs or .wavs it had displayed previously. I experimented with several other CDs; the problem occurred not only for CDs I'd already digitized, but also for ones I hadn't touched yet. Again, as of last week these CDs were recognized by both Mac and Windows as carrying .aiff and .wav files, which I was able to copy to the SSD with no problem. I tried fidgeting with the ASUS drive, and after awhile, Disk Utility did finally recognize one of the CDs. When I opened the CD in Finder, it displayed a list of .aiff files as anticipated. However, when I tried to test a data transfer by copying a single .aiff from the CD to the desktop, no dice -- just an endless "Estimating time to copy" notice, and a very sluggish Finder which eventually had to be relaunched. Similarly, neither VLC nor QuickTime could play the file, and both went non-responsive/had to be force quit when playback was attempted. In terms of purely just recovering the audio data, I can try using the PC setup to rip the CDs; I'm aware .cdas are a container/metadata format which don't carry any audio information, but I believe I should still be able to rip using Windows Media Player. As for the Mac setup, though, I'm very curious to know what went wrong? Should I try to hunt down an old CD player to check on playback that way? Any insight appreciated, cheers!

I want to automatically burn a cross-platform data CD with the same contents each time a blank disc is inserted, and eject it when done. To that end I created a very simple AppleScript that does just that: do shell script "/bin/bash -c 'hdiutil burn ~/Desktop/catalog.iso'" It works fine from the AppleScript editor. If I click "Run" with a blank CD inside, it burns the CD with the data from the .iso and ejects it upon completion. However, if I select "Run ~/Desktop/burn.scpt" as the default action when inserting a blank CD, nothing happens. I actually have to open the AppleScript editor and select "Run". How can I make it actually run the script? blank cd dialog

I have several old discs with videos taken from many years ago (from around 1995!) and we can play these on a DVD player. I am trying to read the discs using a USB SuperDrive. Here is a visual of my setup: enter image description here (I put the USB in the SuperDrive, then connect the SuperDrive to an adapter that plugs into one of the 4 slots of the touchbar.) I put in the disc, and feel some whirring sound on the discs. Then it shows me: enter image description here The other options are: enter image description here If I open in Finder, I see this: enter image description here I am not sure about what I should do at this point. It seems like my laptop cannot see any files. The discs do not look scratched or dirty. Does anyone have advice for troubleshooting? Or are these videos just too old to be used, or is this not the right usage of the USB SuperDrive (I have not used it before)?

How to clone an audio CD (including pauses between tracks) under Mac OS X Mountain Lion?
I need to clone an audio CD, including the defined pauses between tracks. Under Linux, `cdrdao` would do the trick for me, but I cannot get the version from MacPorts to work — it will not read from my SuperDrive. Could someone please tell me how to clone a CD with a MacBook Pro under Mountain Lion?

I’ve verified it works for my portable keyboard (musical instrument) to send signals to GarageBand nicely. The module also includes another port for a power supply! It was once a problem for iPhone to transfer any data to different device before the *Files* app became available, but it is not now, I assume. That being the case, is it possible to transfer data stored on an iPhone to a CD/DVD using the camera module and CD/DVD writer?

When I enter the CD-ROM, a menu pops up asking me what I want to do, and if I select "Open with finder", nothing happens. The drive stops sounding busy after some time. Finder only recognises my external remote disc drive, and the info is suspiciously empty. Disc Utility, on the other hand, does seem to identify the CD-ROM correctly as HL-DT-ST DVDRW GX40N Media, but it is uninitialised and unwritable. Is there anything I can do in order to get Burn or DVDStyler to recognise my CD-ROM and burn data on it? enter image description here

I have a public domain audiobook from librivox.org which I want to put on CD for a blind friend.  I want to add a table of contents to the beginning of each CD.  The total length will take six CDs without a lot to spare, so I am planning on seven after I add the TOC files. The files already have track numbers matching the 27 chapter numbers, i.e., 1 0f 27, 2 of 27, …, 27 of 27.  Since I only have ten blank CDs, and they are CD-R (write only once), I am reluctant to answer this by experimenting. Do I need to renumber all the files, including my additions, so that each CD starts with track 1 of N? Or can I make my additions track 0 of 27, disk X of 7 and still have the addition be the first track on its CD? Or to put it another way, if the metadata for disk two is 0/27, 5/27, 6/27, etc. will the CD be in that order? Or scrambled, or even just create an error message? When I imported an unrelated two-disc album, the CDDB made it two separate albums, so I can't judge by that. Would it work better to take them out of iTunes and burn the CDs some other way?

I can tell by looking closer which side is which (mfg. part/batch number) and that it is blank (writing makes a band of different appearance). I can also have my MacBook Pro tell me all those things by putting it in the optical drive. But is there a non-invasive way for MacOS to tell me whether it's CD-RW or just CD-R? (ReWritable or Recordable.) drutil can only tell me the drive's capabilities, unless I try an erase, which may make a CD-R unusable. Web search for the part number(s) found nothing. If I try to re-write, I’ll know. But at that point, it will no longer be usable, and I’ll have to go buy another. My nephew stopped by and found it by Properties in Windows, but it would be nice to know a MacOS or Darwin method.

I want to create an exact duplicate of an audio CD on my Mac (Lion). Is there a way that does not involve to import the CD into iTunes? I just don't want to remember that I have to delete the tracks after copying. And I'm not sure if importing and burning again really creates an exact copy. (Track gaps preserved, and so on) I tried using Finder, Crtl-click the CD, select duplicate. Ctrl-click the resulting Folder and select burn to CD, but that left my with a data CD containing AIFF-Files. Any ideas, or AppStore suggestions?

The thread at https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/63531/how-to-burn-windows-compatible-cd-on-mac-os-x-mountain-lion did not help me. The image correctly shows up as type FAT32 in Disk Utility, but the resulting disc invariably shows up as type Mac OS Extended. I am trying to do this because some Windows users are reporting not seeing anything on the disc I sent them. It was my understanding that the Mac automatically creates CDs that can be read by both OS X and Windows.

I'm having an odd issue where after my Mac Pro works for a certain amount of time (it seems variable), the drive will no longer seemingly be recognized. It shows up in the hardware profile for the system, however when I hit the eject key, Toast starts up instead of my drive responding. Further, when Toast or any other CD / DVD writing utility is started, the drive is not recognized in these applications. Any idea as to what could potentially be going on here? The thing that throws me the real curve ball is that it DOES work for a little while when the system is restarted and then just "disappears" as noted. NOTE: Even when Toast is not in the mix Disk Utility and other apps will not recognize the drive. It is obviously some kind of an OS issue in terms of it still showing up in the hardware profile, yet no applications are able to detect / use it properly.
