I saw a related post but the instructions were specific to VMware Fusion, which I am not using.
With Carbon Copy Cloner, I created a bootable backup of the existing macOS Mojave installation that I want to turn into a VM.
Do I need to include The Container when I convert that clone into an iso or cdr?
Yesterday, I made a macOS Mojave VM directly from the macOS Mojave Installer using the instructions and tools here: AlexanderWillner/runMacOSinVirtualBox
The post about doing this with VMware suggests adding the iso/cdr clone of the boot drive you want to virtualize to an existing Mojave VM. Would this work in VirtualBox, given that VirtualBox still doesn't technically support booting from APFS drives?
I'm not particularly familiar with VirtualBox and I don't want to purchase VMware or Parallels. What will be the simplest way to convert my existing macOS Mojave APFS installation into a VirtualBox VM?

My question is following: is there any way I can remap it so my 30+ years habit of using this key to open console etc would not result in frustration?

I want to use Arch Linux in a VM (I use UTM, which uses QEMU under the hood). Because I'm have an M1 Mac, I need **Arch Linux ARM**. Unfortunately, there's no installation ISO for Arch Linux ARM like there is for the normal Arch -- there's only a pre-installed file system wrapped in a .tar.gz.
I somehow need UTM to boot that existing installation of Arch ARM, so I need to convert this .tar.gz to a bootable ISO. Is there a way to do this because it seems like
mkisofs
is not available on Mac.
Perhaps this the wrong approach. I'm not sure if the ISO will be bootable just because there's the linux installation inside it, as far as I know from normal Arch, you need to have a separate partition from where to boot.
Otherwise, the Archlinux ARM webpage says the files can somehow be directly booted. If I've got something fundamentally wrong here, please let me know, and I will then try to find out more about how EFI boot for linux works, or move my problem to another stack forum.)

While the separate keyboard behaves like so (ANSI layout):
This is not the correct layout. E.g. the Enter/Return button is wrong (1 row). It should be like this (again ISO layout):
Note that the Enter/Return button is 2 rows high here.
Unfortunately, the Mac setup does not fully recognise the keyboard:
… even though it lists it in System preferences, under Modifier keys:
Changing between ISO and ANSI does not help:
Note that the Ultimate keyboard is completely blank:
Finally, on the Keyboard Setup Assistant intro screen, it is stated *“Your **Logitech** device cannot be identified and will not be usable until it is identified”* (Emphasis mine). While I have a Logitech mouse, the keyboard is, as described, from another manufacturer. I have never attached a Logitech keyboard to the computer.
I have tried to search for answers here on Stack Exchange. I have found similar topics like this , this and this , but none that answers this issue.

I did check [this](https://apple.stackexchange.com/search?q=burn+iso) search result but would like to bring this up in a new question since it has been at least 6-7 years since the latest question in a similar category: How can I burn the Windows 11 iso to a USB flash drive on a Mac?
I have Macbook Pro, 13-in 2020, macOS: Ventura 13.1.
I searched online for solutions and tried a great number of them, including:
- Etcher (third-party software)
- UNetbootin (third-party software that was unable to open)
- WonderISO (third-party software)
- Virtualbox (errors occurred as it tried to set up the Windows virtualbox)
- Disk Utility (does not contain the tools mentioned in the resource I was following at the time)
- Terminal
- UUByte ISO Editor
Terminal was the closest to working, but once I plugged it into my computer it claimed it was missing a file so it's likely the process was corrupted.
UUByte had the best review in the most recent how-to resource, but it required a purchase. I still ended up buying it, but not only was their email considered junk, but the code coming from the purchase also did not work either.
[Here](https://www.sysgeeker.com/burn-iso-to-usb-on-mac.html) is one of the sources (2020) I received information from. I checked a couple of others, but so far none have worked.
If there's also a factual answer saying how it is definitely not possible anymore, with any solution, I'll accept that.

In a bit of a jam: My 2015 iMac has just come back from repair for a broken Fusion Drive. Unfortunately, the replacement HDD needs a firmware update, but this was ignored by the repair shop. I'd rather try to resolve this myself than fight it out through the credit card company. Due to the difficulties in accessing iMac's internal hardware, the firmware upgrade must be done *in situ*.
The [firmware upgrade is available from Seagate](https://www.seagate.com/support/kb/barracuda-1tbdisk-platform-firmware-update-223651en/) , but it's packaged with
| ![enter image description here ][2] |
Unfortunately, there's a bigger issue: While the ISO was burned to the DVD, this DVD isn't recognized by the system as a 'Startup Disk'; it isn't presented as an option after a Restart when the option key is depressed. I have also [tried making a bootable USB drive](https://help.ubuntu.com/community/How%20to%20install%20Ubuntu%20on%20MacBook%20using%20USB%20Stick?_ga=2.190828974.429803735.1668245635-2129123856.1668245635) using the "Other Procedure" listed there, but the USB drive wasn't presented as an option either.
I tried using
FreeDOS
in a "bootable" ISO format. Seagate even supplied some [instructions for preparing a bootable CD/DVD](https://www.seagate.com/support/kb/how-to-burn-an-iso-image-onto-a-cddvd-rom-201431en/#MacOS) , but it seems these instructions are for an older version of macOS. Their instructions didn't work on my 10.14 Mojave system, but I found another approach that seems to have worked:
| Finder Window | Burn Disc |

|
balenaEtcher
to create a bootable USB using the .dmg
file created with hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/Barracuda-ALL-GRCC4H.iso
. This also failed, but Etcher gave a potentially useful error message shown in the screenshot below.

Having never done it before but encouraged by reading the advice from this question:
https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/228116/add-delete-modify-files-within-a-disk-image-dmg
I ran:
hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o EditableImage.dmg givenImage.ISO
and although it created a DMG that was was "mount-able" - I was not able to edit it in any way. Trying to run
hdiutil resize -size 400m EditableImage.dmg
gave me a failure with Resource temporarily unavailable. (I rebooted just to be sure there was nothing using it)
running
hdiutil imageinfo EditableImage.dmg
indicated it was of Format: UDRW
but I couldn't actually write to it.. and this led me to asking here the question: what am I doing wrong?

I'd like to make a bootable ISO file from Apple-provided DMG file located under **Download macOS using Safari on your Mac** from: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683 . They provide a DMG file with a pkg file inside which I used
xar -xf
on, leading to a:
- Distribution (exec, 9kb)
- InstallMacOSX.pkg (pkg obviously, 6.21 GB)
- Resources folder (650kb)
I'd assume InstallMacOSX.pkg is the most important, so it has these files:
- Bom
- InstallESD.dmg (6.2 GB)
- PackageInfo
- Payload (9 MB) (Renaming to .zip un'zips' a Install OS X El Capitan.app file)
- Scripts
How would I utilize 'Payload' and 'InstallESD.dmg' to make a bootable ISO file?
Based off of this guide's end results, and my closest OSX version to this, I get these files:
- .fseventsd
- .IABootFiles (24.3 MB)
- .IABootFilesSystemVersion.plist
- .IAPhysicalMedia
- Install macOS Sierra.app (5.03 GB)
- Library
- System (24.3 MB)
- usr
Install macOS Sierra.app has: /Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg (5.01 GB).
Meh.

Also, what I'm doing this for is to attempt installing Windows 7 on a partition of the boot drive and then upgrade it to 10 from inside the install itself so I can 1. Work with a sub-4GB ISO file which apparently makes software happier and 2. Upgrade from pirated to legit Windows. There very possibly may be flaws with this plan (especially since the Boot Camp drivers in another partition of the drive in question are made for Windows 10) so if there are feel free to let me know.

I have never used Apple/Mac OS so I am very much in uncharted territory here. I need to test the site on Safari but after searching online, it appears as though it isn't possible to download a MacOS ISO to install in virtualbox: link (I do not have access to an apple computer)
I tried installing Safari on a windows VM but it is a really old version since Safari is not supported on Windows. Also, from what I can tell there are no Linux versions of Safari.
Is there a way to test the site using Safari somehow without owning a Mac?

I bought three movies on DVD on eBay. I am trying to make .iso backups onto my external hard drive. The first one I tried using Disk Utility, but it only produced a partial copy (without generating any errors) so I switched to using
dd
, which worked on the first movie. For both the second and third movie, dd
only partially ran through before giving the following error:
`dd: /dev/disk2: Permission denied
1438432+0 records in
1438432+0 records out
736477184 bytes transferred in 212.743197 secs (3461813 bytes/sec)`
The number of records/bytes is similar, but not exactly the same, for both movies. I have no clue what else to try, since dd
is as low-level a program I know to use. I have no idea why the error would be generated mid-copy like that. Googling for this kind of error leads to answers regarding improper filesystem permissions (I'm running sudo dd
) and unmounting first (I'm also running sudo umount
), and AFAIK neither would lead to dd
working *for the first 700MB* and then getting that error.
Also, I have watched these movies all the way through without incident, so the filesystem appears to be good.

I want to start with the [Crucial SSD Firmware Update](http://www.crucial.com/support/firmware.aspx) and copy the ISO to a bootable Mac USB stick, using a minimal set of tools. I hope that means using only built-in Mac software, such as Disk Utility and Terminal for commands. If necessary, I will reluctantly use a commercial tool. (As of this writing, the latest is [Crucial_m4_040H-04-00.zip](http://edge.crucial.com/firmware/m4/040H/Crucial_m4_040H-04-00.zip).)
I've have waded through a muck of articles about how to copy an ISO to a bootable USB stick, but I have not found a solution that works and that I'm comfortable trying.
* For example, I read [How do I burn an ISO on a USB drive on Mac OS X?](https://superuser.com/questions/63654/how-do-i-burn-an-iso-on-a-usb-drive-on-mac-os-x) and followed the steps. The steps seemed to work, but the resulting USB stick would not boot. I tried two different sticks to reduce the chances that it was a hardware issue.
* I've also read [Updating firmware on Macs without a superdrive](http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Solid-State-Drives-SSD/Updating-firmware-on-Macs-without-a-superdrive/td-p/61259) too. One part recommends using [rEFIt-Syslinux.dmg_.zip](http://blog.io101.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/rEFIt-Syslinux.dmg_.zip) . But how do I know if that DMG is up-to-date, reliable, and trustworthy? Even if it is, that route seems unnecessarily complicated. Why is there not a simpler option?
