I've got a macOS laptop and I'm attempting to convert old VHS tapes to playable DVDs. I convert the VHS tapes to .mp4 format using OBS and then attempt to burn the .mp4 files to playable DVDs using the Burn app. The Burn app automatically prompts me to convert to .mpg and it does this conversion for me. That's fine for a few VHS tapes that aren't too long however some are 2+ hours and as a result, the .mp4 files are more than 8GBs which when converted to .mpg, they're greater than the space on a DVD so I'm not able to burn them. Any ideas how to solve this issue so that I can convert the longer VHS tapes to playable DVDs?

I also tried playing it on a Sony boombox, but it also didn't play. Why doesn't it play? Will I be able to get songs off of it?

Does anybody have experienced the second situation (i.e. can the problem be solved using DVD drive lens cleaner kits)?

I have two external USB optical drives, both burners, one that will work with DVDs and CDs, the other that will also handle BDs (Blu-ray Discs). I use these sometimes with MakeMKV. Recently I had an issue with reading a BD with MakeMKV and had to force-quit MakeMKV. I tried to eject the BD, but Disk Utilities would not because it was in use. (I remember at one point I found a way to still eject it, but I was unable to use that drive to read anything until I rebooted because the OS still saw it as in use.) I rebooted. On reboot the OS recognized the BD in the drive and it came up in Finder. But I still heard a fair amount of activity from the drive. It's no longer making noise, but the access LED on the drive is still flashing. I've had this happen before, where I have discs in either drive, usually DVDs or BDs, and I hear movement in the drive even when I haven't been using any software to access that drive for hours or even a day or more. So it seems that something is accessing my external USB optical drives even when I'm not using any software to do this. How can I find out what program is trying to access discs in my optical drive?

So my macbook is getting on but still functioning well for everyday purposes. However the other day I took out a stack of arty DVDs from the local library and not one of them is recognized by mac, which honestly has probably not tried playing a DVD for years. I read somewhere this might be down to iDVD not working on High Sierra. Either way, has anyone else experienced this and knows of something I could do to view DVDs again without splashing out on a new machine? Software or driver etc, ideas welcome

I am preparing a DVD with several 10-minute videos in mp4 (produced from Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere), 1920x1080. I am using iDVD version 7.1 (1145) and macOS Mojave 10.14.6. When I export the project into an .iso image, it spends a few hours encoding the menus, and then a few more encoding the first video, and suggests 30 hours to encode them all. I stopped the process and used FFMPEG to encode the videos to a PAL DVD format, following https://www.kevssite.com/converting-a-video-file-to-dvd-with-ffmpeg/ :
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -y -target pal-dvd -qscale 0 -aspect 16:9 output.mpg
I can add this video to the DVD, but it shows a warning sign and clicking on it shows a broken link: Video format fails to render in iDVD I tried other commands, such as scaling directly to 720p with -vf scale=720:-1 but it also shows the same broken link. I also tried [this script](https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1809116#post1809116) , which does not produce an output because the setting for the bitrate is too low. How can I convert MP4 files to 720x576 for a PAL DVD with FFMPEG, so that iDVD encodes faster?

I've tried mounting it through diskutil mount but it tells
Volume on disk3 failed to mount
Perhaps the operation is not supported (kDAReturnUnsupported)
If it has a partitioning scheme, use "diskutil mountDisk"
If you think the volume is supported but damaged, try the "readOnly" option
None of the terminal suggestion worked. I'm working from a MacBook pro Catalina mid 2012 Anybody can help? UPDATE: Thanks @jaume suggestion I've tried accessing to the disk installing hfsprogs on Ubuntu VM and I succeeded into retrieving the raw files. I leave the question open because I'd hope to access not only to the raw datas, (picture, sounds, ecc.) but also into the _app_ version of the executable. Thanks

When I insert one of the DVD-R into my 2010 iMac running macOS 10.13.6, the computer futilely attempts to read the DVD only to eject it after a while. This is the same for all DVD-Rs. When I insert one of the DVD+R, my iMac tells me that I have inserted an empty medium and asks me whether I want to burn data on it. This is the same for all DVD+R. The iMac does have trouble reading newer audio and video DVDs, but it faithfully reads all my old audio DVDs. I therefore think that there is nothing wrong with the drive, like dirt on the lense, but a compatibility problem with the software trying to read the DVDs. What can I do?

I bought three movies on DVD on eBay. I am trying to make .iso backups onto my external hard drive. The first one I tried using Disk Utility, but it only produced a partial copy (without generating any errors) so I switched to using dd, which worked on the first movie. For both the second and third movie, dd only partially ran through before giving the following error: `dd: /dev/disk2: Permission denied 1438432+0 records in 1438432+0 records out 736477184 bytes transferred in 212.743197 secs (3461813 bytes/sec)` The number of records/bytes is similar, but not exactly the same, for both movies. I have no clue what else to try, since dd is as low-level a program I know to use. I have no idea why the error would be generated mid-copy like that. Googling for this kind of error leads to answers regarding improper filesystem permissions (I'm running sudo dd) and unmounting first (I'm also running sudo umount), and AFAIK neither would lead to dd working *for the first 700MB* and then getting that error. Also, I have watched these movies all the way through without incident, so the filesystem appears to be good.

I am not a power user of macs but i have an early mac mini with a dvd drive and a 2011 mini without a dvd drive, and wondered if i can connect the 2 to use the older mini as an external dvd drive and possibly storage for time machine? Also i have put in an ssd into my 2011 mini and want to put on a fresh copy of the snowleopard o/s [which i have] onto the ssd using - if i can - the older mini's dvd to do so. Any help would be appricated
