Rescaling videos with FFMPEG for iDVD

I am preparing a DVD with several 10-minute videos in mp4 (produced from Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere), 1920x1080. I am using iDVD version 7.1 (1145) and macOS Mojave 10.14.6.
When I export the project into an .iso image, it spends a few hours encoding the menus, and then a few more encoding the first video, and suggests 30 hours to encode them all. I stopped the process and used FFMPEG to encode the videos to a PAL DVD format, following https://www.kevssite.com/converting-a-video-file-to-dvd-with-ffmpeg/ :
I tried other commands, such as scaling directly to 720p with
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -y -target pal-dvd -qscale 0 -aspect 16:9 output.mpg
I can add this video to the DVD, but it shows a warning sign and clicking on it shows a broken link:

-vf scale=720:-1
but it also shows the same broken link. I also tried [this script](https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1809116#post1809116) , which does not produce an output because the setting for the bitrate is too low.
How can I convert MP4 files to 720x576 for a PAL DVD with FFMPEG, so that iDVD encodes faster?

So, I've got this pretty big (12 minutes, 3sec/slide) slide show. I may be done with it. I may not.
The show is composed of ten iPhoto-11 slideshows. Each one was set up 4:3, then exported, with the kind advice of Nathan in another question to specify H.264, 2048 bit rate, and the second-highest resolution (my pick on the theory that I was not going to be driving an HDTV, just a relatively ordinary projector).
Imported into iMovie-11 at 30fps, arranged, decorated with music, exported to via the share menu iDVD. Didn't touch *anything* in iDVD. just pushed the burn button.
Inserted resulting disk into nice new-ish dvd player with 30" LCD TV, 720 resolution. The pictures have a very visible structure of being built of little squares.
I dont' see artifacts in full-screen preview in iPhoto, or in full-screen imovie preview on my macbook pro. (On my mini, it warns me that full resolution will be degradated, so the presence of them there is not a surprise). But the DVD has this problem.
**edit**
I discovered an option in iDVD to vary the 'encoding quality'. Moving that up to professional looked to me to make a notable improvement.
Ideas?

I have an old Macbook with Snow Leopard on it, and a newer Macbook Air with Yosemite, and a newer Macbook Pro with Mavericks.
The old Macbook is taking about 4 hours to encode videos to burn to a DVD disc using the highest quality setting, so I wonder if I install it on the Macbook Pro, whether it can be much faster. However, since iDVD is discontinued since Lion, there might be 2 ways to install it on the Macbook Pro or Macbook Air and I wonder if they will work.
1. Buy iLife 11 (produced in 2011) from Amazon and install on Mavericks and Yosemite... but I wonder how compatible it will be, and whether the installation may write some outdated material over the newer, more current files (of the OS).
2. Simply copy the iDVD app from the Applications folder on the Snow Leopard machine to a USB Flash drive and copy it over to the Applications folder of the Mavericks and Yosemite machine. But is there any side effects of doing so? Often, the way general users install apps on the Mac is by download a
.dmg
file, and double click to see a virtual disc, and then just drag the app (which is actually a folder) to the Applications folder. So if I do the method (2) here, isn't the same as the .dmg
way of installing an app?

.iso vs .img files for DVD images?

There seem to be multiple standards for image files representing the contents of a DVD. For example, iDVD creates
.img
files if told to burn a file rather than a DVD directly. However, Linux install disks (for example) that are too big to fit on one CD (over 740 Mb or so) usually come in the form of .iso
files meant to be converted to a physical DVD using dd
, Toast, Disk Utility, or a comparable program. Disk Utility can also mount an .iso
image on the desktop so that it looks like a drive, much as with .dmg
files. So, several related questions:
* What exactly differentiates a DVD-size .iso
from a DVD .img
?
* Is there a simple conversion path from .img
to .iso
?
* Is .img
an Apple-specific file format?
* If .img
is Apple-specific, should I be worried about archiving DVD images that I want to keep permanently as .img
s (i.e., is it possible that future software won't be able to read them)?
The last question speaks to the specific issue that brought this question to mind--I have a number of DVDs of home movies, painstakingly produced with iMovie and iDVD, that I would like to archive both as actual burnt video DVDs (i.e. for a DVD player) and as image files from which I can burn more copies if necessary. But is .img
the best format to do this, or are those likely to become obsolete? Would .iso
be better? I'm interested in the general question of .iso
vs .img
(vs any other relevant formats) too, as the title of the question indicates.

How do I make an iMovie 11 project into a DVD without iDVD?

Other answers here have dissed idvd as an obsolete item, and I am noting that my 9:24 movie has idvd sitting there spinning a cursor for a very, very, long time. So I have other choices?

Six months later it is not allowing me to further add anything to the project, and iMovie keeps crashing on me. I decided to stop, and burn it to iDVD. I have now tried at least 3 times to export project to iDVD to burn this disk, and after two hours of supposed copying; I come back to my computer to find out iMovie
"Quit Unexpectedly"
! The project is approximately 200MB. I just deleted the iDVD preferences playlist, and did verfy and repair disk permissions in Disk Utility. Any ideas on what to do next?

In iPhoto '11, I have created a slideshow and sent it to iDVD 7.1.2 (
Share > iDVD...
).
iDVD does fine with maintaining the timing, the music, the transitions, etc. However, even though I have the project set to 16:9 and under iDVD's options I have disabled "Always scale slides to TV Safe Area" the images of the slideshow are stretched vertically, compressed horizontally. No toggling of any of these options has had any effect. Burning to DVD, "burning" to image, and preview all show the same thing: stretched/compressed images.
This is not a problem of my player's aspect ratio, or my TV's aspect ratio.
