libaacs for Apple Silicon
I have the key.cfg file installed but the libaacs dynamic library appears to not be working. I'm assuming this is because it is Intel and not ARM. I got the file here: https://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/ Does anyone know how to get Blu-rays to play in VLC on Apple Silicon Macs?

I have two external USB optical drives, both burners, one that will work with DVDs and CDs, the other that will also handle BDs (Blu-ray Discs). I use these sometimes with MakeMKV. Recently I had an issue with reading a BD with MakeMKV and had to force-quit MakeMKV. I tried to eject the BD, but Disk Utilities would not because it was in use. (I remember at one point I found a way to still eject it, but I was unable to use that drive to read anything until I rebooted because the OS still saw it as in use.) I rebooted. On reboot the OS recognized the BD in the drive and it came up in Finder. But I still heard a fair amount of activity from the drive. It's no longer making noise, but the access LED on the drive is still flashing. I've had this happen before, where I have discs in either drive, usually DVDs or BDs, and I hear movement in the drive even when I haven't been using any software to access that drive for hours or even a day or more. So it seems that something is accessing my external USB optical drives even when I'm not using any software to do this. How can I find out what program is trying to access discs in my optical drive?

(Note the Mac Mini *does* have HDMI, but I have no way of using it with the display.) I'm considering getting an external blu-ray player, assuming I can find a reliable enough brand - but does the lack of HDMI mean it'll be impossible to play discs? I read that during the (lengthy?) load sequence the player does a check on the security of the output. (I'm not concerned about 4K as the monitor is only a 24" 1920x1200, just the improvement from SD to HD).

I have a new M1 Pro Mac and I installed ffmpeg using brew. I also have a Blu-Ray ISO (contains .m2ts files) on standby to be converted to .mkv. Previously on a Intel mac, I used this command and it worked fine, shrinking the size of the original file by a lot:
ffmpeg -i file.m2ts -c:v copy -crf 28 -c:a flac ~/desktop/mynew.mkv
When I do this on my M1; where I expect the 'encoding' to be faster, I get an astounding KERNEL PANIC! I'm pretty sure ffmpeg isn't corrupted. I used homebrew to install it on macOS 12.0.1 (21A559). The same command with a mp4 in place (test.m2ts -> test.mp4) does not crash. Performing cp on said .m2ts file (cp test.m2ts ~/desktop/a.m2ts) causes a panic. I have discovered that the problem is how each computer handles the .m2ts file. Same file on Intel and M1, except it causes a crash on M1. So, what can I do in this situation? Do I wait for another Monterey update to fix this? I've also read that playing an HDR video causes a panic, however playing a Blu-Ray disc in VLC causes no crash. For those interested in the Panic Log, here is a pastebin link of a crash caused by **FFMPEG**: https://pastebin.com/f1gemPQ2 and here is a crash with symbolication enabled, but caused by me **OPENING the folder with m2ts:** https://paste.ee/p/n65io

What I'm looking to achieve is to write (and read) data files on BD-R discs for storage / backup / archive purposes, just like one can do with CD and DVD discs. For clarity, I am not interested in copyrighted / encrypted / DRM'd BD-ROM HD video material / films, just plain data accessible through Finder. Obviously, I would have to provide myself with a Mac compatible Blu-ray writer / burner first. That being said, does OS X support reading and writing data files from / to BD-Rs natively without 3rd party software? If not, is there any open-source software that would allow that? I'm on a MBP with Yosemite and have never used an optical drive on OS X, so I'm not familiar with that process. Online documentation on Blu-ray for Mac / OS X is pretty sparse and I can't find an authoritative source on the matter. I'd be hard-pressed to believe I'm the only one who is trying to achieve that. Thanks!

I've recently switched (back) from Windows 10 to macOS running on an iMac 27-inch Retina late 2015. While I still used my Windows 10 laptop, I used a program called DVDFab to rip my collection of Blu-ray movies into a format suitable for Plex and Emby. The process took about 45 minutes per disc and used the GPU part of the Intel i7 processor in my laptop to speed things up. Now that I am on a Mac, I can't seem to find a program (or set of programs) that allows me to rip Blu-ray movies with the same, or better, speed. Most articles seem to suggest a combination of MakeMKV for ripping and Handbrake for converting. However, this takes about 45 minutes for ripping and 2 hours for converting, as none of these programs seems to make use of GPU acceleration. I have also downloaded a few commercial packages to see if they make use of acceleration, but I have yet to find a program that both can read directly from a Blue-ray disc and do the transcoding to give me a suitably small mp4 file. Can you recommend a solution other than sticking with Windows 10 and DVDFab?

UHD Blu-ray playback on iMac 5K 2017?

I recently saw that there are already UHD 4K Blu-ray drives (with SATA) available, like this one from Pioneer which should (combined with appropriate USB housing) make mounting the disks in macOS possible. So I was wondering **if I can get UHD Blu-ray playback on my new iMac 5K 2017 working?** Concerning hardware there should be no problem with its Kaby Lake processor (required for decryption) and HEVC hardware acceleration, right? The AMD Radeon Pro 580 should also support HDCP 2.2, however I'm not sure about the built-in display… Regarding software: As of my understanding AACS 2.0 has not been cracked *yet*, so ripping is out of question at the moment. But there seems to be software for Windows which supports UHD BD playback, like the newest version of PowerDVD. **However, I wasn't able to find an equivalent software for macOS.** I found serveral "guides" and "how to"s, listing software they claim to support UHD BD playback (and even ripping), but none of the companys official websites advertise such a feature. Has anyone got playback of 4K Blu-Rays on the Mac working, tried it or has any experience on this topic whatsoever? Am I right about my assumptions regarding the hardware support? Thanks in advance! P.S.: I hope this is the right branch to post this question to. Please redirect if it isn't. ---------- **UPDATE:** I just installed Windows 10 with Bootcamp and ran CyberLink's "UHD Blu-ray Advisor" to check my hardware. These are my results: UHD BD Advisor Results I'm not completely sure what to take out of this. Either there really *are* hardware problems *or* it is just some compatibility/driver issue with Bootcamp (that maybe doesn't occur in macOS). The Intel i7 7700K *does* support Intel SGX according to Intel but the feature could be disabled ...? It most certainly means that playback ***with PowerDVD*** (also from CyberLink) ***in Bootcamp*** will **not** be possible (at this stage). Could it really be that HDCP 2.2 isn't supported due to the iMac's hardware? Does anyone know of a similar diagnostics tool for macOS?

I've been having a re-occurring problem reading data from self-burnt data Blu-ray discs. I'll try to copy the contents of a disc to an external HD and nearly every time, at some point during the copy, I'll get a -36 Error code from the Finder (data can't be read or written). Just before this error the drive spins down and I can hear the head jumping around, like it's having trouble finding data. The drive will do that for between 2-10+ minutes before giving up finally and showing me the error code. This tends to happen on similar types of file – usually files that are packages (Logic files, Photos library), Logic project backups and EXS24 sample files (AIFs). Sometimes copying that file again works, sometimes not. These discs were originally burnt through the Finder and they all passed post-burn verification. So the question is: where might the problem be? Is it the OS? Is it the drive? Is it the discs? Really I have no answer. (I'm running fully updated Mac OS 10.10.5, Blu-ray drive is a Samsung SE-506, discs are TDK-branded light blue face.)

Is there a way to solve this? I kind of want the navigation of chapters and extra features in a Blu Ray disc, so if using makemkv and a Sony external Blu Ray drive to make the Blu Ray disc into an .mkv file, that's not so preferred. (Is one possible way to use the Sony external BD drive (about $180), and use bootcamp to boot up Windows 7 instead? Although this method is not so preferred because it needs to boot up only Windows)

As it turns out, there are only few Blu-ray drives which are compatible (dimension-wise) with a unibody MacBook Pro and the lack of Apple support for this media makes driver support, associated software and other requirements makes reliable information on using a BlueRay drive with OS X and Macs hard to come by. ## Question How can I know if a specific internal Blu-ray drives will work when installed in the unibody MacBook Pro? _(both specific models you know work with specific OS answers and answers to explain this in general would be of use)_

So I got a DVD-RAM and a BD-RE both formatted with UDF, packet-writeable (I think packet writing is the wrong descriptor here as a DVD-RAM is randomly addressable but it's pretty close). At least the DVD-RAM seems to be somewhat offically supported and they are delivered with UDF on them as factory default anyway. So now as I drag & drop a file onto the disc in Finder this will most of the time fail with some error like "xy cannot be read or written" same happens when using cp in Terminal to copy a file. i/o errors... But this seems to happen only because some of the sectors are corrupted on the disc (and not yet marked as defective) or there are some buffering errors sometimes, because if you try often enough it will eventually write the whole file without an error. But especially with big files this is pretty annoying as the error occurs a little later every write until the whole file is written to disc (flawlessly btw. it reads and checksums perfectly then) Is there anything I could try to fix this behavior? My best guess is Finder reacting too harsh to i/o errors as these are not very common for harddrives but much more common on optical drives. BD-RE shows exactly the same issues but less often. DVD-RAM is worse by far.
