The title says it all. How can I create a bootable Mac OS thumb drive for an older Intel Mac Mini (A1347) from my current Mac Mini (MMFJ3LL/A)? I've found instructions from Apple's web site (Create a bootable installer for macOS ) for when you have a .app bundle installer. However, the download links from How to download and install macOS all either get me a .pkg file or link me to the app store. The app store punts me over to system update. (For context, why am I doing this? I'm trying to get HDMI audio working on the A1347 under Ubuntu and want to rule out bad hardware. Ideally I want to install any version of Mac OS on a thumb drive per Install macOS on an external storage device and use it as a startup disk simply to test audio over HDMI. See my other question question for reference.)

Mac pro 2009 4,1 Boots up but no video output (black screen). It was working fine on the old OS that was on it(not sure which OS). I want to update to the highest OS (el capitan) it can run. So I did. But after that I get an black screen. I tried to reset some things like time code, vram etc. Nothing works. Can't even go to the BIOS to reset everything (or I've got the wrong key combination). I have also added two other hdds. And on one of them was an Windows installation. So I hold the option key on startup to choose an other hdd and choose the Windows one. And that was just working fine. What can I do to run Mac OS again? Also tried an Bootable USB with el Capitan but It won't recon the USB flash drive I've made on my 2019 Macbook pro. When I use Option + Command + P + R And waited till the second time hearing the startup sound it looks like it's working fine. But still no output. I see the Apple logo in the beginning but after that no output. De Mac pro itselfs keeps running with no errors or blinking lights. Gpu is an ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB Mac Pro Graphics Card 6gb ddr3 ram And de standard Xeon 2,66 MHz cpu Ive downloaded El Capitan, (it's in the downloads folder, DMG FILE). Then I go to the terminal and I fill in: sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/THENAMEOFMYFLASHDRIVE --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app Fill in my password next, and than it says: ' sudo: /Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia: command not found. I recently bought a used **MacBook Air 2012** and wanted to do a clean install of the OS. When restarting from **Recovery Mode** and erasing the hard drive, I saw two hard drives **"Macintosh HD"** and **"Macintosh HD - Data"**. When trying to erase the **Macintosh HD**, there was an error "*the volume on disk2s5 couldn't be unmounted because it is in use by process 659 (kextcache) couldn't unmount disk (-69888) operation failed*". I wasn't able to boot in **Safe Mode**. I couldn't start in **Recovery Mode** it defaulted to **Internet Recovery Mode**, at first I had "*pkdownload error 2*", erased the drives a few more times and got "*Can't download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X*" when trying to install from Recovery Mode. I decided to make a bootable USB drive from a backup up file "Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Install DVD.iso", using a MacBook Pro 2019 and Terminal and the prompt: diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk3 sudo dd if="/Volumes/DriveName/10.7-Lion/Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Install DVD.iso" of=/dev/disk3 bs=1m status=progress I followed these instructions to ignore ownership on the drive, but now when I try to boot from the USB drive, I press Option, Power, type in the Wifi password, and right away I get a forbidden sign 🚫. Other things I tried: 1-The drives are not faulty because **Disk Utility First Aid** returns no errors. 2-I set the correct date in **Terminal** (after getting a feeling the internal clock was wrong) Is the MacBook Air damaged or how can I make the new install?

I've read other posts here but my issue is nuanced. My computer was accidentally wiped by Find My. I want to try a tool to see if any data is recoverable. In order to use the tool I must reduce security for third party. I am able to boot the Macbook Pro M3 from an external SDD with Sonoma. There is an admin user created. When I get to the screen to select reduced security I get a "no administrator is found error". I tried creating a second admin user, making sure to have a full name in the description. None of the other fixes worked. I realized after many attempts and finding the article linked below that I wasn't given the screen to select and log in as administrator. These instructions: https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-security-settings-startup-disk-a-mac-mchl768f7291/15.0/mac/15.0 "Step 5. Select an administrator account, then click Next." That screen to select administrator flashes and goes away before I can do anything. So that's why I'm getting the error no administrator because I cannot select and use the administrator account on the bootable SDD. I don't want to install new OS on the Mac before knowing if there is data to recover. Is there a way to get admin user recognized by the system booting from an external drive so I can reduce security?

Some background: I have a 2010 27" Intel-based Mac that I managed to brick by trying to reinstall the OS and wipe the main disk. Now due to the changes from what I can gather by the address Mac uses I was unable to contact the server hosting the image. After restarting, thinking I would be able to get back into the recovery menu, I am now presented with the grey folder icon with a question mark upon it. I have a USB Drive with Sierra on it to reinstall, however I am unable to actually open the boot menu to select the drive. Holding Alt/Option doesn't seem to work, even after clearing the NVRAM with Option+Command+R+P. Currently when I do boot with Command+Option+R or Command+R, it launches internet recovery. Here it is stuck at:
Internet Recovery. This may take a while.
Otherwise I can also get it to launch the "newer" internet recovery where it has a grey globe where is eventually gets to display
:00
that never starts counting down. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something else I can try?

My goal is to install a second OS to an external Samsung T7 SSD and then run the computer from the external SSD. But I can't get it to work, I have tried for three days now! :( I have followed [[Troubleshooting] macOS Sonoma Can't Boot From An External Hard Drive](https://iboysoft.com/tips/macos-sonoma-wont-boot-from-an-external-hard-drive.html) without any luck. Basically, you download macOS Sonoma from Appstore and choose the install location to an APFS/GUI formatted external SSD. This is the error I get when trying to boot from macOS Sonoma installed on an external SSD. >The macOS version on the selected disc must be reinstalled. ![Screenshot of the error while trying to install macOS Sonoma on an external SSD ][1]

How can I create a bootable USB drive for a laptop I can't boot?

I have two old MacBook Airs: one from 2011 and another from 2015. The 2015 Air boots fine, while the 2011 gives me the flashing folder missing system icon on boot. I tried booting it into recovery mode, and it asks for a password, which I'm as near to 100% sure I have correctly, but when I enter it and press return, the password field clears and nothing else happens. So I thought I'd use the 2015 Air to create a bootable USB drive with High Sierra on it (the latest OS the 2011 will boot, according to MacTracker). Plugging this into the 2015 Air while the Option key is held down correctly gives me the choice to boot from the internal or the USB drive. However, doing the exact same thing on the 2011 Air gives me the useless password screen. Not holding the option key down (hoping that, failing to find an internal boot drive it'll look automatically for an external one) brings up the flashing folder. I'm guessing perhaps that creating a boot USB from the 2015 won't necessarily work on the 2011. Or maybe the 2011 is simply a brick now. Is there anything to my theory about the 2015 not creating a correct boot drive for the 2011? Is there anything I can do to bring the 2011 back to life by installing a new OS on it somehow?

On my mid-2011 iMac, when I try to boot into the Windows XP installation disk I have put into the Mac's disk drive, no keystrokes are registered however the keyboard is powered (the lights on it are on). This leads to XP skipping the boot into the install, as I cannot press anything to boot from the CD. I've also noticed this issue for a GParted live disk I have. The GParted boot selection menu appears, however trying to use arrow keys, or pressing Enter, will simply not do anything. If I unplug the keyboard and then plug it back in again, the lights turn on and the countdown on the GParted boot menu... freezes? It freezes like this for about 3-4 seconds and then the countdown resumes as normal, however still no keyboard input detected. I have also tried different USB ports for the keyboard and can confirm the keyboard works when booting into Windows 7 installed on the Hard Drive, and also works in the Windows 7 setup (which doesn't ask to press a key to boot from the DVD). Why is it that no keystrokes are being registered when trying to boot into these disks? **Note**: I cannot use Bootcamp due to the fact the Hard Drive has Windows 7 on it, and not OS X.

I have a Macbook Air mid-2013. The original SSD drive had Catalina and was working intermittently, so I decided to change it. I acquired a third-party SSD drive of the same size, and the corresponding adapter to be able to plug it in. It comes from a Windows machine, so when I start booting it starts loading Windows, meaning that the drive is successfully recognized. I have a bootable USB drive, creating using this guide , that contains Catalina. However, it doesn't boot, showing instead a circle with a line through it ... Now, using the command+R option in this situation loads the OS this computer came bundled with, namely OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion). The problem is, this version of OSX is not able to recognize this SSD drive. It doesn't appear in Disk Utility, for instance. So I can't install OSX Mountain Lion from it. I believe this is the same reason the USB drive is booted to a circle with a line through it. Using option+command+R loads macOS 11 (Big Sur), and this is a new enough version that it sees the SSD drive. So I could install this version. Problem is, I believe this version is too new for it to run smoothly on this older device, so I would like to install macOS 10.15 (Catalina) instead. How can I achieve that? Can I somehow use the terminal in this Big Sur Recovery Mode to install Catalina to my SSD from the USB drive?

When trying to install MacOS on an external SSD, the internal SSD is always booted when restarting. When I select the external SSD in the bootloader, it only shows that the installation is corrupt. In the MacOS installer there is an option to select the disk on which you want to install MacOS. I just selected the external SSD. There is also a menu on M1 macs where you can decide from which SSD you want to boot from. Just hold the power bottom for like 15 seconds until it shows up. You can also configure a standard startup disk in your MacOS system preferences or in the mentioned boot loader. I watched some YouTube videos about it and it worked for them. They are able to install MacOS on multiple drives and select from which there wanna boot. I want to archive this to because of my work I need different installations. Can anyone help me installing MacOS on a external drive? Do you think there is a solution or is this more of a Mac bug?

Every time it's powered on (with no keys pressed) it shows a prohibition symbol. Using Command+R for reset doesn't work(same prohibition symbol). - Pressing Option mid-chime brings up the disk menu(its rather finicky about when option is pressed I've noticed). - I've tried using a Catalina Boot Disk, and when clicking the Catalina Disk option, it goes back to the prohibition symbol. I've tried several different commands while having the Catalina disk option chosen, with no different results (aside from variations of speed switching to the prohibition symbol). Any suggestions about this issue? I've seen similar issues but nothing exactly like this, so any new ideas would be helpful.

I am trying to create bootable drives for various versions of Mac OS. In particular, I would like to create an installer for the original version of Sonoma (14.0). However, I do not see this version listed at this site: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102662 I also don't see it available in the downloads on the developer page. Is there an official source for acquiring 14.0? PS: I found https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/309399/how-can-i-download-an-older-version-of-os-x-macos , and this is useful and contains some older versions of Sonoma, but not 14.0. I strongly feel that at some point in history, there was a page or API you could access through the developer site that allowed downloading any OS version. I remember visiting this site 2 to 3 years ago, but I can't find it anymore.

- macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 (23E224) Downloaded Windows 11 ISO image on mac and now I want to create a bootable USB so that it can be used to install Windows 11 on my desktop PC, but found no free software on macOS, but some command line utility from here (solution 3) Boot Camp Assistant also not supported on this M1 chip. It failed on last command.
rsync -avh --progress /Volumes/CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9/* /Volumes/WIN11/.
rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at /AppleInternal/Library/BuildRoots/ce725a5f-c761-11ee-a4ec-b6ef2fd8d87b/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/rsync/rsync/main.c(996) [sender=2.6.9] What could be the issue here? Also, can someone suggest me authentic guide how to burn Windows 11 ISO image to bootable USB?

I'm trying to upgrade an oldish MacBook AIR from (I _think_) High Sierra to Big Sur. I've made a bootable USB and it's working fine: - Power ON with holding Option/Alt - Select USB boot - Goto Menu - Install BigSur It lists 2x HD's - Macintosh HD - Macintosh HD - Data when I try and install this OS onto either, it says I need 9GB free space. I have no idea how I can free any space on this (either?) partitions because I can't log into the machine. If I let it try and boot up _normally_ it hangs in some "install?" screen with "29 minutes remaining" and hangs there for ever (i've had it on for over 24 hours). So -> I'm hoping there might be some place I can use Terminal to manually rm some files, like the user's recycle bin or downloads or something? I can't seem to see _any_ real files when I use Terminal from the INSTALL Menu :( It's like .. everything is locked down/hidden? I did fine ONE link to help me which suggested I remove the VM (virtual mem) disk, so I did that which released 2GB and now it's down to 7GB needed. enter image description here enter image description here Can anyone help, please? Maybe I need _another_ boot disk which can access the HD with some nice UI (like some ASCII GUI like the old days) ? EDIT: - Added pics - Apologies for the blurry 2nd pic EDIT2: I need to keep the data on the disks so I can grab it / back them up. So i cannot Erase the partition(s) with Disk Util.
