Access Remote Disc across a WAN or two LANs separated by VPN

We've used Remote Disc to access a DVD reader attached to one computer on a LAN before. Now that we're all 'work from home', we've got a VPN setup that creates peer-to-peer connections between all of our location and all normal traffic flows fine across it. However, from my computer, I can't "Remote Disc" to a DVD drive located on another users location which is connected via the VPN. Each 'location' is its own LAN. Example 192.168.2.0/24, 192.168.3.0/24, 192.168.4.0/24, etc Is there some clever way to make this work. We have a use case where the DVD burner is needed in one location, but reading the disc is required in another. As of right now when I click "Remote Disc" it only works from a computer on the LAN the DVD burner is attached to. When I click "Remote Disc" from a remote location, nothing shows up even though we're all connected via the VPN network.

Herefor, I use this command: zgrep -a "my@email.com" /Volumes/storage.address.name/home/folder/Collection\ \#2-\#5\ \&\ Antipublic/* Once the command is running, I can see my free space on my local MacBook, wherefrom I run the above mentioned command, disappear swiftly, like 0,5 GB per minute. If I let the command run, I would totally run out of space. Could someone please tell me why is this happening or how to prevent it?

I tried to follow methods 2 and 3 outlined in this guide https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3413 on accessing my Time Capsule hard disk from outside of my network. Unfortunately, both these methods are not working for me. When I try to connect I get a *"There was a problem connecting to the server"* message. enter image description here I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that I also use my Time Capsule as my primary router. More details below: - For the **Method #2** in Setup section I skipped steps 1-2 because I have a static IP address and thus I don't need a dynamic DNS service. I continued with step 3 "Enable file sharing" & "Share disks over WAN". Then I followed the "To access the AirPort Disk:" section and tried to connect from another Mac connected to the internet using my iPhone data connection. When I tried to connect from Finder's "Connect to Server" and input afp://mypublicstaticIPaddress:8888 I got the "There was a problem connecting to the server" message. - For **Method #3** I followed the Setup section to the letter and when I tried to connect as per the "To access the AirPort Disk:" section, which I also followed to the letter I got the same "There was a problem connecting to the server" message. Can anyone suggest what else I may need to do to get either of these methods working? **UPDATE August 30, 2019**: now, when trying to connect from Finder by pressing CMD+K and not inputting any connection type prefix like afp or smb, I get a different error: *"This file server will not allow any additional users to log on. Try to connect again later."* enter image description here **UPDATE January 11, 2020**: The issue was that I didn't have a public IP address, my ISP uses [carrier grade NAT](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier-grade_NAT) , so I had to ask for a public IP address.

From my 2018 MacBook Pro I connect to a remote hard disk (located in other town) via WebDAV HTTPS protocol. The remote hard disk is Synology RackStation 2414RP+. Whenever I try to copy files larger than some 2 GBs to the hard disc, I lose the connection, the hard disk stays mounted though. Sometimes the connection gets back itself. This also happens when I calculate an md5 hashsum of a file larger than some 2 GBs or when I use grep command on such bigger files on the hard disk. I'm using the latest macOS Catalina and the Synology hard disk is updated to the latest Synology OS. The same thing happens also when I connect to the hard disk from Windows 10, so it's not macOS specific. I have also tried so far mounting the hard disk using ocsmount for WebDAV , Mountain Duck and ExpanDrive , where the connection is even more unstable using these. The only time I was able to get a stable connection and could comfortably copy large amounts of data (hundreds of GBs) was when I connected to the hard disk using Cyberduck . This is not a long-term solution though as I need to have the hard disk mounted in the file system. I suspect there must be something wrong in the settings of the Synology hard disk, maybe some limits... I have no idea, though. Synology is not my cup of tea. I don't have direct access to the Synology settings, my friend does. Does anyone have at least any idea how I could solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

I am looking for do-it-yourself resources/guides to either (depending on difficulty): 1. replace the HDD with a SSD (obviously the easier scenario if not too difficult, or, ...) 2. a) Remove the internal DVD drive that hardly ever gets used. b) Install the DVD drive in an enclosure with a USB or Thunderbolt port for use as an external device when needed. c) fill the empty DVD drive space with an SSD and make use of both the HDD (for data) and the SSD (for OS and software). Obviously the first question is readily dooable and I'm considering the Samsung 860 EVO 1 or 2 TB if I settle on the first upgrade scenario. Question 1: I'm just not sure Samsung 860 EVO will fit? Question 2: It is really the second scenario that I need the step by step guide for, if it is possible, not overly difficult and, if any of you folk know of a good DIY resource?

I have been using my NAS named **JBPersonalCloud** for a while, and I always used Wi-Fi to connect to my home network. A few days ago, I connected my Mac to my home network via both Wi-Fi and Ethernet for a couple of minutes to test the Ethernet speed. But then I dropped the wire and remained Wi-Fi only. However, since then, Finder has started to show my NAS as **JBPersonalCloud-2**. But there is no second JBPersonalCloud, and I am using the original connection interface (Wi-Fi). NAS shown with <code class=-2 suffix in Finder sidebar" class="img-fluid rounded" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto; margin: 10px 0;" loading="lazy"> I have tried to reboot the NAS, the router, and my Mac.But the **-2** suffix still is there. Is there a way that I can change it back? Thanks!

Any value to "Remote Disc" on a laptop that has an optical drive?

According to this article : > I just got off the phone with applecare support.
It IS an error, > the Remote Disc icon is not supposed to be there. It is only meant to > be installed on the macbook air. It seems like apple by mistake > included it on the Mac mini install DVD's. Confirmed by Apple (sort of): > If your Mac already has a built-in optical drive, or an external > optical drive connected, you won't see the Remote Disc feature appear > in the Finder or other apps. Since the first article mentions it appeared in 10.5.6 (or earlier), it seems odd that something Apple has called a bug would still be in 10.13.1. I know how to remove and re-create it, and it could be useful if my optical drive fails. But I know several other ways of using remote discs. *Is there any value to this if I **do** have a working optical drive?*

I accidentally deleted my external SSD using the delete function in Disk Utility, and now it does not show up using diskutils list in Terminal nor in Disk Utility. I have disconnected and reconnected the device and it does not show up in Finder. I have also attempted to restart my machine a couple of times. The data on the disk is not really important I have other backups, but I would like to use my disk again. How would one go about to access it?

I'm used to access to a distant hard drive through a VPN (Cisco Anyconnect), but I removed that connection and the vpn software about two months ago. Everything was fine until yesterday where that message always showing up. Connection failed picture I've been in touch with Apple customer support, but so far, they were not able to help. There is no trace of the former server in network system preferences, finder, etc. By monitoring the console, I noted that I have the following logs when the error windows show up : logs Regarding the logs, I checked in keychain if they were any references to the remote server, but I did not find anything. Would someone have an idea about how to solve the problem ?

However, the installation package and all sub-packages, have been stripped of the dot in their file names. Hence it is not recognised as an package. Why is this and how can I install the software?
