m2 Macbook looks terrible with HDR content... how do I turn it off?
It seems like when I view hdr content (typically I see this on youtube, but have also seen it on some image viewer apps) it makes content insanely bright, but dims everything else, and then it flickers when I switch away from the HDR content. There _has_ to be a way to disable this... right?

Enforce HDR to be played as SDR when MacBook is plugged in
I understand the benefits coming from HDR, but some creators use HDR wrong, just to pump up their videos so they look "better". "Optimize video streaming while on battery" is a MacOS setting that plays HDR content as SDR while on battery. It works exactly how I expect, making those HDR videos watchable when the screen brightness is low. However I can't use it when plugged in.
What doesn’t work is Settings -> Displays -> Preset -> "Apple Display (P3-500 nits) as that’s still too bright in a dark room for my needs.
I am hoping there is a kind of system flag, private or documented API or other way to override this setting even when the MacBook is plugged in. But I do not know how to find
How can I always force streamed HDR video to be presented as SDR on macOS even when powered and not just on battery power?

I have a m1 max macbook pro. I'm not sure if this is a bug or a software compatibility issue, but whenever I view HDR content the screen windowserver takes up 100% cpu and the increase of brightness of whole screen along with the decrease of brightness for sdr white is not synchronized, resulting in very noticeable stutter / flashes.
While I try to research around the issue, I came up with this option that should disable EDR, so at least I won't get this performance issue on my studio display. However, when I click on the check box nothing happens - it's still checked. Does this suggest a bigger problem with my system? Is there a way to set this via the command line?

Is there any way to take a true HDR screen shot on a Mac?
Currently screen shots are coerced into standard color ranges, meaning you cannot take an accurate screen shot of the screen when ultra bright HDR content (or possibly ultra black HDR content) is shown. Is there any solution for this, at present?

I have a new Mac Studio and am having troubles with it and my monitors' HDR. How do I force it to recognize and properly output an HDR signal?
Before I got the Mac Studio I had both of these monitors connected to a PC with an Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti which was using them at their full resolution, frame rate, and HDR - so they definitely do actually support it. It connected to the left monitor via DisplayPort and the right via HDMI.
My **right monitor** is the ViewSonic VP2785 (4K60, HDR, AdobeRGB). It has DisplayPort and HDMI inputs.
When I connect it via HDMI, I do not get an HDR option in Settings. I can set resolution (which is "More Space" i.e. native), color profile (AdobeRGB), refresh rate (60 Hz), and rotation (standard).
When I connect it with a USB-C/DP to DisplayPort 1.4 cable, I get and use the same options. However, when connected this way, it frequently doesn't wake up when the system wakes up, so I prefer the HDMI option.
HDR never shows up.
My **left monitor** is the ViewSonic VP2786 (4K60, HDR, AdobeRGB). It has USB-C/DP, DisplayPort, and HDMI inputs.
When I connect it with a USB-C/DP to DisplayPort 1.4 cable, I get and set all the same options as above, but I *do* get an HDR option. However, when I turn it on, I get a very washed out display - not HDR. When playing HDR content, I still get the usual dirty contrast areas where the brightness saturates non-HDR colorspaces and gets clipped.
When I connect it with the native USB-C connector (with a thunderbolt-compatible cable) I get the same as above, but as with the previous one it often fails to wake when the system wakes.
**How do I get it to recognize and properly output HDR?** How do I figure out why it's not working in the first place?
Some other notes:
- This behavior was the same on 15.0 and 15.0.1.
- When it "fails to wake", OS X agrees and has moved all of my windows/spaces to the other monitor. When I power-cycle the monitor OS X will then move all my windows/spaces back to where they were across the extended displays.

When I'm scrolling through reels on Instagram, every now and then (becoming more and more frequent) I will come across a video that slowly turns up the brightness a considerable amount (at night it becomes truly painful). The like and comment buttons (which are white normally) will slowly become desaturated gray colors. I'm assuming this is because the HDR video is overlayed with SDR content so it looks desaturated in comparison.
Here is an example video that this happens on: https://www.instagram.com/p/ChlmNv4D-i2/ (view on newer model iPhone in Instagram app)
This phenomenon happens to me and a lot of people I have asked, however it also doesn't happen to people with older models (iPhone XR does not seem to expereince). But, when I look up what iPhones support HDR playback, it says iPhone 8 and later. So I'm wondering a couple things:
1. Is this phenomenon called "HDR Playback"
2. What phone models support this annoying "feature"
3. Is there a way to disable this? Other people on other forums have said turning on lower power mode disables it, but I was wondering if there was a more proper way?
I get that this can be useful for artists and pro videographers and the like, but when this HDR colorspace stuff is done on amateur videos it gets super annoying because they are frequently just overexposed and it hurts my eyes.

Can a Late 2016 MacBook Pro drive a 4K monitor with HDR?
I'm quite tempted by some 4K HDR external monitors that are slated to come to the market soon. Question is - can a Late 2016 MacBook Pro drive 4K HDR monitor at 60Hz? 4K monitors are supported as per Apple doc, but it doesn’t mention HDR at all.

I am trying to increase the brightness of some SDR photographs so that they can fully utilise the brightness of "XDR" displays on apple devices to display a bright image (For example, screens on some apple devices can reach 1600 nits peak brightness for showing HDR contents).
In gimp, after importing an image, I set the "Image -> Precision" to "32 bit floating point", and "linear light". Then I increase the brightness. While it does look brighter, I am not sure how can I make sure I get the 1600 nits (or at least, say, 1000 nits). When I export the picture to
.hdr
format, and look at them in the Preview app, the colours looks completely different from what I see when I am editing in Gimp.
**What should I do to (1) use the full brightness of the displays and (2) get consistent result when I am editing and after I export?**
If it is not possible with gimp, please feel free to tell me what other software should I use (for example photoshop?).
I think this should not be difficult, because there are plenty of tutorials online about how to do this for **videos**. But when I try to search for how to edit **photos**, I do not get an answer. **It would be helpful if there is a link to a tutorial on making HDR photos.**
**Note:** by "HDR photographs", I mean image formats that could be viewed with more than, for example, 1000 nits of brightness, and extremely high contrast, on supported monitors, **just like HDR videos**. I am **NOT** discussing the technique of taking multiple photos of the same scene and combine them into one.

Is it normal for everybody? I there any way to overcome this problem? As of now I can't see any other way to play Youtube HDR content on Mac. There's no Youtube app on Mac, and Safari does not support HDR.

After upgrading macOS to 10.15.4 on my Macbook Pro 2018, an HDR option shows up for my 4K BenQ PD3220U display.
It is even pre-selected.
I can tell that the display is definitely in HDR mode. Unfortunately it does not look very good. The fonts are weird, as if they aren't antialiased. It is especially noticeable in black-on-white text.
Is there a way to improve the HDR mode?
The display is connected through USB-C. Changing resolution to

Default for display
does not help. I have used this display in HDR mode with ChromeCast Ultra so I know how good HDR can look.

I'm using a USB-C/Thunderbolt to HDMI 2 dongle and an HDMI 2.0 certified cable. Also, the same Samsung Q6F 4K HDR TV when connected to a Windows 10 desktop seems to operate in HDR mode. i.e. Windows 10 switched to HDR mode and videos (youtube or separate video files) also appear in HDR. Am I missing a macOS setting? Do I need an update or a new dongle?
