I finally got Bootcamp working on my Mac so I could play Windows Steam games on it. The only problem is that I don’t have enough storage on Bootcamp to download games from Steam and I ran out of space on my Mac to put more space on Bootcamp. I bought a 64 GB SD card to fix this, but I can’t figure out how to actually store the SD card storage on my Mac.
I converted the SD card to an external drive but that still didn’t solve it because I can only partition the SD card and I can’t add it to my Mac’s storage. I also can’t add the external drive to my Bootcamp storage, and whenever I try to use it on Bootcamp (like installing Steam on it or installing Steam games), it won’t work.
Is there any way to just add the external drive to my main Mac storage or to the Bootcamp storage?

I want to try keeping my iMovie library on an external drive because I use both my iMac (at home) and my MacBook Pro (when traveling) to edit my videos.
Ideally, I would like to use a SD card so that it doesn't draw power from my MacBook Pro, but it may be too slow? It will also free up hard drive space on both computers. But when searching about this, Apple's support page says it's possible but advises against it:
> "You can store your library on an external storage device such as a USB drive, FireWire drive, or Thunderbolt drive formatted as MacOS Extended (Journaled). Apple doesn’t recommend storing iMovie libraries on external storage devices like SD cards and USB flash drives, or drives shared on a network."
Does anyone know why this is so? I want to make sure it's not damaging in anyway.

Cannot eject USB memory card either in Finder or through umount
Often when external SD or Micro SD cards are mounted on the Desktop, I cannot eject/unmount them. The only operation I have done on the card(s) is to open them, copy and/or delete files. Other than the Finder I don't access the card in any other application. In the Finder the error message box says:...

In the Finder the error message box says:
The disk "MEMORY CARD" wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it.
Buttons are Cancel
or Force Eject
, which I always cancel out of.
In the terminal (bash) I navigate to /VOLUMES and try to use umount:
$ sudo umount ./MEMORY\ CARD
umount(/Volumes/MEMORY CARD): Resource busy -- try 'diskutil unmount'
$ diskutil unmount MEMORY\ CARD
Volume MEMORY CARD on disk3s1 failed to unmount: dissented by PID 422 (/System/Library/Frameworks/QuickLookUI.framework/Versions/A/XPCServices/QuickLookUIService.xpc/Contents/MacOS/QuickLookUIService)
Dissenter parent PPID 1 (/sbin/launchd)
The only way I can safely unmount the card is to log out or force-quit the finder. This seems rather extreme.

I have been using the set-up seen in the picture below for quite a while in order to use External-Storage with my iPad (Air, 3rd gen.). It's an Atolla USB-A-3.0-Hub [item 3 in the picture] which connects to the Apple Camera Adapter [item 5 in the picture] and thence to the iPad. When it's all connected up the Camera Adapter receives power from the Apple 12W (5.2V, 2.4A) power-supply [item 7 in the picture] and the hub receives power from its own 15W (5V, 3A) power-supply [item 1 in the picture].
The Lexar SD-Card-Reader I'm using in this way [item 2 in the picture] doesn't explicitly state on its packaging that it is compatible with iPads or iPhones (though it doesn't say anything to contrary either): it just states that the system requirements are "Mac OS 10.8+; Windows 10/8/7/Vista/XP; USB 2.0+ port", and I couldn't find anything further about it on Lexar's dysfunctional website. I have tested it and when doing so it seemed to work (reading and writing files with the iPad) without any problems in this set-up. Am I fine to keep doing this? Is there any reason why this SD-Card-Reader would not be compatible with iPhones and iPads *besides* the obvious physical USB-A-connection issue, which the set-up in the picture works-around?

I'm sure this is simple enough to most, but I am just starting to play around with Apple script.
I simply want to have a destination folder highlighted in finder and run a script that will copy all my photo and video files from an inserted SD card to that highlighted folder.
Basically just a quick way to offload files since I do this frequently.
Could anybody help get me started? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I am booting a retrogaming system (Recalbox, linux-based) on my Macbook Pro 2009 (Intel, El Capitan) from an SD card (FAT format).
The SD card is currently displayed as "EFI boot" upon boot drive selection (*al*t key upon startup), as it currently displays "EFI boot". I would like to change that label ("RECALBOX", for example).
I have been through many ressources online and tried the
command as advised here:
https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/388246/efi-partition-change-name-and-logo
My version:
--folder /Volumes/RECALBOX/EFI/boot --label "RECALBOX"
It does create the expected hidden files in the folder
.disk_label
.disk_label_2x
but the default "EFI boot" label doesn't change in the boot selection on startup.
Any ideas if I'm missing something?
Thanks for your help!

I have a brand new 256Gb SanDisk Micro SD card and I'm not being able to read/use in my Mac through the internal SD Card reader slot (I don't have an external card reader to try this option).
The card was working at the very beginning, but after a format (or something I don't remember) it become not recognized by SO.
I've tried "Disk Utility" format (Erase) with all partition types (ExtFAT, Mac OS Extended, etc) to no avail. It formats the card successfully, but then it is still unseen by "Finder".
I've also tried "First Aid" in "Disk Utility" to no avail too, it does the recovery with no errors, but the card continue to be unseen, so I cannot write to it.
I've been reading How to fix broken GPT, GUID and unmountable, no type volumes? , but I'm currently stuck.
If I do (in Terminal):
sudo gpt -v show /dev/disk4
The response is:
gpt show: /dev/disk4: mediasize=255869321216; sectorsize=512; blocks=499744768
start size index contents
0 1 MBR
1 65535
65536 499679232 1 MBR part 7
Any help in order to make my SD Card to be recognized/work? I'd prefer to use ExtFAT so it can then be read in Windows as well as in my Android mobile.

I am using a MicroSD card to program my Raspberry Pi with. I was recommended the
AEGO Micro SD Card 32GB Mini sd Card
card. However at this point I am wondering if I have broken it.
Here's what I have tried
- Disk Utility
- First Aid on Generic Storage Device Media -> Operation successful
- Repartition on Generic Storage Device Media -> Greyed Out
- Erase on Generic Storage Device Media -> A writable disk is required -69772
- First aid on system boot -> successful see results below
- Erase on system boot -> it tries to unmount disk Couldnt modify partion map -69874
- Terminal
- diskutil erase
-> (newfs). You cannot erase the boot disk. Ownership of the affected disk is required. Example: diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ UntitledUFS disk3
- diskutil disableOwnership /dev/disk6
-> Error encountered disabling user/group ownership: A disk with a mount point is required (-69854)
Is there any way to recover from the state I got the SD in? Or is it potentially just broken now? How can I tell?
I have checked and the physical write lock is in the correct position.
Here is diskutil list
/dev/disk6 (external, physical):
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: FDisk_partition_scheme *32.0 GB disk6
1: Windows_FAT_32 system-boot 268.4 MB disk6s1
2: Linux 31.7 GB disk6s2
Here is the first aid on system boot
Running First Aid on “system-boot” (disk6s1)
Checking file system and repairing if necessary and if possible.
Volume was successfully unmounted.
Performing fsck_msdos -y /dev/rdisk6s1
** /dev/rdisk6s1 (NO WRITE)
** Phase 1 - Preparing FAT
** Phase 2 - Checking Directories
** Phase 3 - Checking for Orphan Clusters
430 files, 185612 KiB free (371225 clusters)
File system check exit code is 0.
Restoring the original state found as mounted.
Operation successful.

I have 2 TB of space in iCloud, of which I have used less than 75 GB. I have some video data stored on a 256 GB SD card that I am trying to copy from the SD card to iCloud using my MacBook Air under Ventura 13.4.1 using an SD card adapter.
No matter what I do (Desktop and Finder, or command line) I keep on getting error messages like the following (e.g. when doing
cp -R
):
cp: /Volumes/Insta360/DCIM/Camera01//VID_20230801_153704_00_015.insv: No space left on device
df -m
provides the following information:
Filesystem 1M-blocks Used Available Capacity iused ifree %iused Mounted on
/dev/disk3s5 233752 218627 21 100% 1834742 217200 89% /System/Volumes/Data
/dev/disk4s1 243952 116461 127490 48% 465847 509961 48% /Volumes/Insta360
It seems to me that cp -R
is trying to copy the files to /System/Volumes/Data
before sending them to iCloud, and /System/Volumes/Data
appears to have run out of nodes.
I don't understand why this is, and I don't know how to get around it. Can anyone please tell me how to copy files directly from an external disk (specifically an SD card) to iCloud?

~~~
➜ ~ diskutil eraseDisk FAT32 MYSD MBRFormat /dev/disk2
Creating the partition map
Error: -69877: Couldn't open device
~~~
~~~
➜ ~ diskutil eraseDisk free EMPTY /dev/disk2
Started erase on disk2
Unmounting disk
Creating the partition map
Error: -69877: Couldn't open device
~~~
My USB drive appears as read only when i do CMD+I, I tried repairing the permissions but that failed too.
~~~
➜ ~ diskutil resetUserPermissions /dev/disk2
id -u
Ready to reset user permissions on disk2
I have a Macbook Air M1 With Mac OS Ventura 13.0.1.
I've been using an external SD card reader and it has always worked - until today.
Things i've tried:
- Multiple SD cards
- Multiple USB-A-To-C Adapters
- Rebooting
- Rebooting in Safe Mode
- Fiddling around with the Lock
I have now even used the sd card reader on a friend's macbook. That works.
The only thing I have changed between when it worked and now, is that I installed a USB-to-UART driver. More exactly CP210x VCP. Is it even possible that the driver interferes somehow? There is no other usb device connected.
Now, this SD card is 512GB. The process is taking a long time, projected to take 1-2 days. What happens if I prematurely cancel it? Is there a way to pause and resume the process?
I have a micro SD card that is set to read-only that I can not get fixed. I have tried the common tips such as:
- Switch the lock on the card. I have tried different positions, like in the middle, almost at the top etc.
- Restarted my Mac
- Pushed the SD card in as fast as I can
- Opened Disk Utility and tried "first aid" and then "erase", but it just fails:
Deletes "NO NAME" (disk2s1) and creates "NO NAME"
Disables disk
Could not change partition map. : (-69874)
The action failed…
- Resetting the PRAM
- Tried putting the micro card in another newer carrier card with a newer switch lock, and tried the different positions again on the switch
- I have also tried some commands in Terminal:
sudo diskutil eraseDisk FAT32 SDCARD MBRFormat /dev/disk2
>>Unable to begin erase operation: A writable disk is required (-69772)
sudo diskutil eraseDisk MS-DOS FAT32 SDCARD MBRFormat /dev/disk2
>>Unknown partition scheme: SDCARD
diskutil list
>>
/dev/disk2 (internal, physical):
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: FDisk_partition_scheme *32.0 GB disk2
1: Windows_FAT_32 NO NAME 32.0 GB disk2s1
diskutil listFilesystems
MS-DOS MS-DOS (FAT)
MS-DOS FAT12 MS-DOS (FAT12)
MS-DOS FAT16 MS-DOS (FAT16)
MS-DOS FAT32 MS-DOS (FAT32)
(or) FAT32
Any other tips on how I can fix this problem? BTW/ the format of the card is: MS-DOS (FAT32), I have an MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015), macOS Monterey version 12.5.1 and I don't have any Windows computers available.
I am considering upgrading my Nintendo Switch's storage by getting a MicroSD card with a larger capacity and then copying over the games, savegame data, etc to the new card.
Although Nintendo has [a support article about this](https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27595/~/how-to-transfer-data-between-microsd-cards-for-use-on-nintendo-switch) , when it comes to Mac here's all they have to say:
> **Important:** This process may not be able to copy the microSD card
> contents correctly in environments other than Windows (such as Mac).
Okay, thanks for the notice. But then, how is a Mac user supposed to accomplish this?
I was wondering if this might be a task Disk Utility could handle. Or maybe there's some other utility app that can be downloaded for this purpose, or... if I'm lucky, maybe it is as simple as dragging over folder contents the way the steps indicate it is for Windows. (Probably should be sure to include any hidden files.) But the way the disclaimer is worded, it makes me concerned that there's something about trying this on a Mac that makes the process more involved.
Nintendo's ["recommended"](https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/220/) card formatting software, [SD Memory Card Formatter](https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/) , has a Mac version. So I'm not really clear on what part of this process is complicated on a Mac or why? All I can think of is: maybe macOS cannot read the formatted card after formatting?
If anyone who has tried this could enlighten me regarding what this process involves on a Mac, I would really appreciate it.
(I'm currently using Mojave and Monterey, on different machines.)
