I had been using Final Cut Express on my MacBook Pro starting in 2009. In April of 2024 I upgraded and the folks at the Apple store transferred all of my old computer onto the new MacBook Pro. Soon after I purchased a new version (11.0) of Final Cut Pro. In the music window there was a large amount of built in music, many short clips that were royalty free. Just a few weeks ago I found I couldn’t find any of my music on FCP . I can’t remember if it was about this time that I upgraded to Sequoia. Anyway I contacted Apple Support and they were able to reconnect the music that was in my music folder. I am still not able to find the built in music. I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with Apple Support, and despite really trying the tech was not able to help me. He initially said FCP didn’t come with built in music, but I have used it. It either came from the old FCX or the new version. I sure want to reconnect it. It sounds like a Library issue but I have no idea ho to reconnect it.

There doesn't even seem to be a version of Premiere or Final Cut that will work with my system. This is all so crazy since in the 90s I was a video editor and used Premiere v3.

I am recording cello practicing tutorials for my students, using (for now) just an iPhone XS and recording at 1080p to get started and to avoid melting the device during summer (it's already struggling quite a bit). Upon checking the recordings, I have noticed that, while the cello is clear and prominent, my voice sounds quite muffled and in the background. Some non-comprehensive research taught me that, while the iPhone's mic is omnidirectional, it prioritises closer sources and my voice originates about 30-40cm behind the cello. To work around this, I have used Detach Audio in Final Cut Pro 11 to separate audio from a video. Then, I exported the video as audio only (side question: is there another way to export only the audio from FCP?), resulting in an 85 MB AIFF audio file. After that, I opened the AIFF file in Logic Pro 11 and used the Split Stem feature to separate vocals from instruments, used the Gain Tool to increase the volume of the voice and exported the two tracks separately (about 80-90 MB each, all expected). I did not add any effect, these are videos through which I also plan to learn the craft, so no need to overdo it. The resulting Logic project is 590 MB big! Is this normal? Should I uncheck certain options in the saving process? Is there anything I can do to improve this? Perhaps some mistake in my workflow? Thank you very much!

My MacBook Pro 2016 with Touch Bar keeps having a kernel panic whenever I attempt to use a specific video file I recorded with my Atomos Shogun Flame. FCPX imports and uses all of the other files from the same shoot fine. However, if I try to play, create a proxy, or do anything that involves handling this file after import, my computer reboots. So far I've attempted to re-encode the file using Adobe Media Encoder, but FCPX still has issues with it. I've tried importing the file into Adobe Premiere but the system still crashes (i.e. it freezes, turns off, then reboots). If I put my SSD back in the Atomos Shogun, and watch the entire file, it plays perfectly fine. I've also attempted transferring the file from the SSD to my internal drive, as well as to my RAID prior to importing it, but that causes the same issue. **Is there a tool that I can use to fix this file so my computer won't crash while using it? Or is there something else I can try to get around this issue?** The Shogun Flame has limited file management capabilities, so I am unable to do anything on that end. I haven't purchased Apple Compressor, so Adobe Media Encoder is the primary tool I have to convert files.

I was making a video, which has 12 photos / images, let's say, each one is displayed for about 30 seconds in the video. I noticed in Final Cut Pro, I can arrange the images "side by side", but then the final video may have 0.2s of black gaps in between, which can be annoying to the viewers. If I drag the edge of the image to "shown longer", it may bump the image next to it to a "higher level" (a higher level timeline), and it appears the "higher level" image would cover up the lower level image (the display precedence). However, what I did later on was a staircase of images... like a stair of 12 steps... which is messy, because when viewing the top most image in the project, and I cannot see how it relates to the sound timeline. What I did later on, by trial and error, was: I make image 1 and 3 wider at the edge where they overlap with image 2, and image 2 is bumped up to a higher level. Now I do the same later on, so that image 4, 6, 8, etc, are also bumped up to level 2... so it is just like a zigzag pattern with only 2 levels. Image 2 will take "precedence" over image 1 and 3, and so there is no tiny gaps whatsoever. Image 4 takes precedence over image 3 and 5, and so on. But is this the proper way? Is there a way just to place them on the same level and use some tools to "make them all go into a perfect series with no gaps"? Or better yet, make them go into a perfect series and also have a 0.3s or 0.5s or fade out fade in effect? Right now if I have to do transition animation manually by hand for all 12 images, I'd go crazy. (it is opacity transitioning and it is not easy and each one can take 30 seconds if I am fast, but 12 of them means it'd take 6 minutes). Maybe if Final Cut Pro doesn't have such a feature, maybe iMovie has it? (I was trying Windows Movie Maker some 10 years ago and it did have a function just to automatically let me add 10 photos and add fade out fade in for them all automatically so it took me 5 seconds to do it).

I am migrating from a 16" MacBook Pro (last Intel version) to the new M4 Max MacBook Pro with the upgraded (non-binned) M4 chip. It was custom ordered with 64GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD. I have a very simple Final Cut Pro project with 4K GoPro 12 LOG footage, the GoPro custom LUT, light Noise Reduction and when I play back video on the timeline where one clip transitions to another with the Cross Dissolve transition, Final Cut Pro goes down to about 2-3 FPS. I do have the Viewer set to Better Quality and if I change to Better Performance, it works fine (but so did my Intel Mac). I am not using Rendered nor Optimized media, but in my research, I concluded this new M4 Max chip could handle simple transitions and noise reduction without pre-rendering the clips. There's no memory pressure whatsoever, nothing else running in the background, but the GPU maxes out when playing back the clips and performance takes a dive when it hits a Cross Dissolve Transition. Should I be getting better performance here? If so, how can I improve performance? If I have to edit in low quality or pre-render clips, I could do that with my old 16" MacBook Pro. Thank you.

I have some video files that came from a digital video camera. If I examine the file using exiftool, I see an output that includes:
SB-iMac(~/Movies/trial) % exiftool f1.dv
ExifTool Version Number : 12.40
File Name : f1.dv
Directory : .

File Modification Date/Time : 2024:05:19 12:26:08-04:00

Date/Time Original : 2009:01:18 11:28:30
After converting with Handbrake and selecting "passthrough common metadata", exiftool reveals:
SB-iMac(~/Movies/trial) % exiftool f1.m4v
ExifTool Version Number : 12.40
File Name : f1.m4v
Directory : .

File Modification Date/Time : 2024:05:19 12:26:08-04:00
File Access Date/Time : 2024:05:19 12:26:08-04:00
The Date/Time Original field does not appear in this listing of metadata for the converted file. If I load both files into FinalCutPro, the original file appears as 'its own event' dated 'Jan 18, 2009' and the converted file as an event for 'May 19, 2024'. Within FCP, I cannot find that the revealed metadata for the original file includes the date in 2009. I tried to create my own view of metadata in FCP and selected the 'Date Time Original'. However, even that option does not reveal the 2009 date.) Is there a way of keeping the earlier date in the file conversion process?

So there's a super simple effect you can do in iMovie, where you add an image on top of the timeline, then set it to **Split Screen**, and use the **Slide** slider to set the timing, and the image will automatically slide in from the side, displace the main video so it is now centered in the remaining space, then slide back out after. I LOVE this effect. It's a great way to have things on screen and it's a huge time-saver that the main video automatically animates to maintain a decent layout. Here's how it looks on an iMovie timeline: screenshot of the configuration described above **So the question is, what's the easiest way to get this same effect in Final Cut?** I know how to add the image on top, and how to slide the image below over to align it, but it's a lot of clicking each time, and I haven't even integrated the "slide" animation. I'd love a drag-and-drop solution that gives a similar effect so I can use it over and over. Maybe it's already built-in?

I would think there are two ways to do this: one would be to get my Mac to act like a security cam with a motion-detector, and only record when there are screen changes. The other way, which I'll probably have to resort to if I can, is to detect when frames change, and introduce cuts. But I can't find a way to do either. I use Final Cut Pro, and DaVinci. Any thoughts?

Video encoding is a small hobby of mine and, while I'm familiar with HandBrake and have been dipping my toes into the far more capable and complicated world of Avisynth, I only recently learned that Apple apparently has its own encoding utility called Compressor. I like to stick to first-party tools whenever it's practical for me, so I'd love to start using Compressor if it can fit somewhere into my personal workflow. But I'd rather not spend the $50 on it without knowing for sure that it can be useful for me. And there aren't any detailed breakdowns that I've been able to find for it. So my question is, what, if anything, does Compressor offer a user that HandBrake doesn't, and vice versa? Does Compressor have all the same functionality and could just be a drop-in replacement for it altogether? Is it more/less efficient in its encoding? Aside from the cost and the open source vs closed source debate, is there any good reason to use one over the other for someone working exclusively with M1 Mac machines?

I'm on a MacBook Pro (2021 16" M1 Pro) so I don't have a full keyboard, implying that perhaps I don't have whatever keys this may need. I've tried every modifying key + the down arrow I can think of: - Option + ↓ - Control + ↓ (does some desktop-exposé thing) - Cmd + ↓ - Shift + ↓ - fn + ↓ ...none of them seem to work. I don't have the page down key, but I've tried the keyboard shortcut for Page Down (fn + ↓). I'd prefer to not remap the shortcut if I am able to figure out what it is, so I'm wondering if anyone knows what key or key-combo the icon with the underlined down arrow symbolizes. I can import them all into an Event just fine, but when it comes to turning them into a compound clip I have to: 1. Select all the frames in the Library, 2. Click and drag them onto a project timeline (which takes 20-30 seconds with thousands of frames) 3. ^D and change the frame length of all the images to 1 4. ^G and name the compound clip. Is there a faster way to do this, with less steps, and less manual intervention? Clicking and dragging the frames onto the timeline especially feels very primitive, and constantly changing the frame length to 1 every single time I do this also is annoying.
