Working with a 2020 MacBook Pro 4TB on Sequoia 15.6. In the past I have edited EDID override plist files to get custom resolutions and HiDPI on external QHD displays. I have also used BetterDummy/BetterDisplay to achieve this, but that app no longer works with Intel Macs (according to the developer, at least not for getting HiDPI resolutions). In the past (not sure which macOS version it changed on) you could edit display overrides in /System/Library/Displays/Contents/Resources/Overrides. It is no longer possible to do this, even with SIP disabled as /System is now read only. A workaround was to place a custom override in the folder: /Library/Displays/Contents/Resources/Overrides However, it seems that overrides in this location are no longer read by macOS. I am trying to get HiDPI (at 1980 x 1080 or 1600 x 900) on DELL P2418D and BENQ PD2500Q QHD displays. Both have worked in this was the past, with modified EDID and/or BetterDummy/BetterDisplay. Is there any way of forcing EDID override on Intel Macs running Sequoia now?

Does macOS resolution setting affect watching 4k videos on a 27 inch iMac?

Is it possible to mirror 2.5K or 5K iMac display to 1080p TV through Apple TV without swithcing iMac's resolution?

I have a 27" iMac with 2.5K built-in display resolution. Also i may replace it with a 5K/retina one. The problem is mirroring it's display without changing my mac's resolution other than it's native resolution. When I use a Thunderbolt to HDMI converter and an HDMI cable, my mac forces me to use lowest resolution between itself and my tv (1920x1080/2K). So it prefers the tv's resolution and my mac switches it's built-in display resolution to 2K and this is not what I want. So, I think about Apple TV and AirPlay mirroring. My question is: **Is it possible to mirror my mac's high resolution built-in display to a low resolution (2K) tv through Apple TV without changing the mac's resolution?** If it's possible, naturally higher resolution image will be scaled down/transcoded to a lower resolution image. Texts and details on original image will be corrupted/blurred but it's ok, I don't expect/need a super clear image on the tv. So, will Apple TV do the job, can it transcode original high resolution image to fullscreen 2K image for my tv?

When I just started using my M4 Mac mini, I was using a cheap Chinese display from Taobao with the brand name "YSNO". This display lied that it was a HiDPI display to the Mac, causing all text and on-screen elements to be giant, but still crisp and sharp. The problem this causes is that everything is humungous. The problem can be solved in the normal macOS by manually setting the resolution to a non-HiDPI one, but for some reason, the boot menu remembered the YSNO display's incorrect configuration and I can't find a way to make it forget it. When I try to open Apple Diagnostics by holding down the power button to access the boot picker, then holding down Command+D, the list of languages has a huge font size (displayed with crisp, but unwanted HiDPI) and extends past the bottom of the screen, and I can't reach the "continue" button. The text is also cut off. This problem persists on my old Samsung monitor (I stopped using the YSNO monitor), which does not show incorrect configuration. I tried running sudo nvram -c to clear the NVRAM, and I also tried running sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver DisplayResolutionEnabled -bool NO to force disable HiDPI. None of these commands disabled the HiDPI in the boot picker and the Diagnostics mode. Is there any way I can reset the screen resolution/HiDPI setting to the display default in the boot picker and Diagnostics mode? My macOS HiDPI is already off. The only thing that bothers me are these modes. Even the Apple logo and progress bar the computer shows when it is booting is giant, as if my monitor was a HiDPI display.

The Displays settings show that the monitor's native resolution (2560 x 1440) is available *and set*, but the "2560 x 1440 HiDPI" is absent. I want to add this option, without use of 3rd party apps, especially because evidence exists that they aren't panacea either. The guides I saw online point to the tools like this one . Unfortunately, following them didn't produce an emergence of new 2560 x 1440 HiDPI option in external monitor part of Mac's Display Settings. Were anyone here successful in enabling HiDPI option for 3-party monitor on any M* MacBook? Thanks

How to change resolution with a script from ultrawide to "regular" resolution? (ex. 1440) on a MacBook Pro
I am using an UltraWide monitor while working from home. But when I'm screen sharing, it's a weird view for the others so I am hoping to find a quick way to change my resolution to black bars on the sides and give me a more 'normal' resolution. Is there any app/script that can help me achieve this?

I'm using an old Apple 30" Cinema Display via a series of dongles: > https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/411391/apple-silicon-m1-mac-connecting-30-apple-cinema-display The native resolution is 2560 x 1600 and works great. It may require to holding Option when clicking "Scaled" to get that resolution. Occasionally, after awaking from sleep, the monitor awakens in an ugly pixelated low resolution state. System Preferences shows 1280 x 800 as the max resolution. At this point I unplug/replug the USB-C cable. The monitor goes back to native resolution after it reconnects. I want to avoid digging behind my desk to unplug the USB-C / Thunderbolt cable. Is there a Terminal command I can run to quickly "reconnect" all external displays? I'm not interested in anything that would require me to shut down the Mac, reset the NVRAM, etc. What I want is a quick software alternative to manually unplugging the monitor. low res state

I access my Gmail email using the browser only. It used to let me upload iPhone photos in different size (original, Large, Medium, etc.). That option is now gone and I can't find methods native to the iPhone for shrinking the image resolution. I have to go home and use ImageMagick, which is very limiting. One trick is to rotate the phone while viewing the image, which shrinks the image to fit in the screen. A portrait image is shrunk to fit in the screen while the phone is in landscape orientation, and vice-versa. I can then take a screen shot and crop away the margin, but it is *very* crude way to control resolution and the image is still several fold larger than what I can achieve with ImageMagick. Using this trick twice in succession blurs the image too much. ***I find it hard to comprehend how downsampling is not available natively. Hopefully, I'm wrong?*** I would prefer not to install a 3rd party app. **ANNEX: The process I go through when I get to my computer** Using the suggestions [here](https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2015/06/efficient-image-resizing-with-imagemagick) , I do the following in Bash (Cygwin): # Bash function definition (1 line) #---------------------------------- unset -f smartresize smartresize() { mogrify -path $3 -filter Triangle -define filter:support=2 -thumbnail $2 -unsharp 0.25x0.08+8.3+0.045 -dither None -posterize 136 -quality 82 -define jpeg:fancy-upsampling=off -define png:compression-filter=5 -define png:compression-level=9 -define png:compression-strategy=1 -define png:exclude-chunk=all -interlace none -colorspace sRGB $1; } # Invocation (only 1 file at a time) #----------------------------------- smartresize inputfile.png 300 outputdir/ The "300" in the above example is apparently the pixel width. A width of 1200 is slightly worse than attaching an iPhone SE photo to gmail as Large (the sizing capability which is now gone). It is good enough for most of my uses.

Regarding non-retina apps running in low-resolution mode on a retina display: - In the past, circa 2012 (ref ), these apps were scaled with nearest-neightbour algorithm, where 1 pixel would become a group of 4 identical pixels. Confirmed in Apple Docs from the period - At some point since then, at least by 2016 (ref ), these apps are now scaled with a bilinear (or similar) filter meaning that a single pixel does not get scaled up cleanly and the resulting group of 4 pixels is blurred with surrounding pixels So, my question: is there a way to change the scaling algorithm back to nearest-neighbour?

I am attempting to connect to a MacBook Pro from a Mac Pro with a 2560x1600 monitor using the built in screen sharing client. I would like to be able have the connection fill the entire screen, but currently the best I can do is set the MacbookPro's resolution to 1680x1050 which fills about 2/3 of the 2560x1600 monitor. Since the built in client is really a vnc server, I would like to be able to set the 'served' resolution to 2560x1600 instead of the native resolution of the MacBook Pro. On a linux server this would be as simple as $vncserver -geometry 2560x1600 and then connecting to the created server. Is there a way to get the native mac vnc client to do this? For what it is worth, I found the location of the client (on Sierra): /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/MacOS/AppleVNCServer but can't figure out what arguments it might take (if any) This post seemed to use ARDAgent to activate and configure the VNC server but did not mention anything about setting the resolution for the server.

I know less about the nuances of the pdf file format than I might like, but I'm not completely ignorant either. "Resolution" might mean something when dealing with raster images (jpg, png, etc), but the pdf file format is this mixed multimedia format that is partly vector most of the time. When I have a pdf file highlighted in Finder, I might see something like this: Resolution reads 2160 x 2944 But on what should be a very similar pdf file, I see a wildly different resolution: Resolution reads 567 x 774 This isn't of purely academic interest to me. The overweight pdfs all seem to have 2160 x 2944 resolution, and the reasonably trim pdfs all seem to have 567 x 774 resolution. I have further questions in that direction but since this is a one-question-at-a-time sort of place, I am only asking what this piece of metadata is representing and whether Finder is just pulling those numbers out of its ass or otherwise making them up from nothing. Is this something like a DPI setting compared to the width and height of the media box (or crop box, or whatever the other pdf boxes are)? Is there some deeper meaning? I would be happy with as technical answer as could be provided, as that might let me formulate better followup questions in the other forum.

So, I moved back to the standard resolution… but everything is too big now. I've reduced the zoom in some apps, but the menus remain huge. So, are there any solutions (apps or whatnot) to either fix the "scaled" display issues… or to keep the standard resolution, but having slightly smaller apps ? Thanks a ton…

No matter what size I set it to, nothing changes even with a reboot. The text is still too small. I could set the display size down of course but I don't want to do that for all the pixels, just text. From what I've read, there's no equivalent in MacOS to the text rendering tweaking that Windows or even Linux allow, or at least not in the same way of working where the font rendering system itself could be controlled. I just fiigure that the Retina Display concept people would have a way to do what seems to me a pretty obvious display mode.

However, in 4k resolution, everything looks tiny in the UI. Searching the web i saw that i should have some scaled option however i didnt see it. enter image description here Changing to 2k everything seems big and little blurry. It is currently connected using a hdmi->hub->type c to the macbook. I tried it with opened lid. Anything that might solve it? Also, can i somehow make sure it will work good with the mac mini m4? Thank you **Update:** So I think that I understood little more about the scaling thing. However, I still dont get something. According to a YouTube video I saw, if I go to system information it should show the monitor resolution + UI looks like (image from the video): enter image description here However, in my case its always the same in both. if i choose 2k both resolution and UI looks like = 2k and same goes for 4k. why? enter image description here
