Change canvas size in Preview.app without scaling image?

I am trying to make a workflow in Automator that takes video screenshots and ideally at the end montages them into one image. I have the video shot working, and is saving into a timestamped folder, so the sequence runs and a folder with the current time stamp is saved 3 images Shot1.tiff, Shot2.tiff, Shot3.tiff into a folder. I've installed Imagemagick and it's working if I browse to the folder in Terminal and run the montage command: %> montage -geometry +4+4 Snap1.tiff Snap2.tiff Snap3.tiff montage.jpg then I get just what I want - the output montage.jpg However I'm trying to replicate this in Automator at the end of my 3 images - and that's what I'm struggling with - transferring this to a Shell script with the variables in Automator?

How to lower iPhone image resolution and file size *after* taking photo?

I access my Gmail email using the browser only. It used to let me upload iPhone photos in different size (original, Large, Medium, etc.). That option is now gone and I can't find methods native to the iPhone for shrinking the image resolution. I have to go home and use ImageMagick, which is very limiting. One trick is to rotate the phone while viewing the image, which shrinks the image to fit in the screen. A portrait image is shrunk to fit in the screen while the phone is in landscape orientation, and vice-versa. I can then take a screen shot and crop away the margin, but it is *very* crude way to control resolution and the image is still several fold larger than what I can achieve with ImageMagick. Using this trick twice in succession blurs the image too much. ***I find it hard to comprehend how downsampling is not available natively. Hopefully, I'm wrong?*** I would prefer not to install a 3rd party app. **ANNEX: The process I go through when I get to my computer** Using the suggestions [here](https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2015/06/efficient-image-resizing-with-imagemagick) , I do the following in Bash (Cygwin): # Bash function definition (1 line) #---------------------------------- unset -f smartresize smartresize() { mogrify -path $3 -filter Triangle -define filter:support=2 -thumbnail $2 -unsharp 0.25x0.08+8.3+0.045 -dither None -posterize 136 -quality 82 -define jpeg:fancy-upsampling=off -define png:compression-filter=5 -define png:compression-level=9 -define png:compression-strategy=1 -define png:exclude-chunk=all -interlace none -colorspace sRGB $1; } # Invocation (only 1 file at a time) #----------------------------------- smartresize inputfile.png 300 outputdir/ The "300" in the above example is apparently the pixel width. A width of 1200 is slightly worse than attaching an iPhone SE photo to gmail as Large (the sizing capability which is now gone). It is good enough for most of my uses.

When I take a photo in the new format with my iPhone 7, is there any way to use it right away in my mac, without having to convert it in my iPhone first? I mean, can I get those photos synced through iCloud and converted locally on my Mac? I have tried to find a third party software that could do that kind of conversion, but was not able to find any that would work on El Capitan. Any idea?

Is there any free program to crop animated gifs? With GUI, because ImageMagick can do that pretty easily, but I have quite a few different gifs and preset coordinates for batch cropping is a no go.

Problem: When trying to print such a JPEG file, it fills a whole DIN A4 page even at 1% printing size. The print dialog does not support fractional size percentages, so the image cannot be sensibly scaled when printing. Solution attempts: Changing the DPI setting of the JPEG file to a value >= 100 DPI will fix this. The actual value does not even matter much. Any value >= 100 will do. Remaining question: How can I change the DPI attributes of a JPEG file?

I'm looking for a tool that can help reshape images to specific dimensions, but I'm not sure if there's a term easy to search for tools that support that. Preview can resize images to specific dimensions, but at the cost of losing dimension ratio. However you can create a square here in preview to specify how to crop, then to zoom in our out of image to get the crop you want, however you cannot specify that crop dimensions, only the image dimensions. Is there a software or a key term for feature that can help you specify crop dimension? (not image dimension) Example: Here I have to carefully drag the border to make it a square, but is there a way to create a crop area with predefined dimensions?] enter image description here

**First, some background:** For those of you who edit photos using Apple software, you may have encountered *AAE sidecar* files, which are generated automatically by the Photos app (for iOS or macOS) when you export an edited image. These sidecars contain the data representing the edits made to the original image, such as crops or recoloring. Following an export, these AAE sidecar files will usually be located in the same directory as the original, exported image/JPEG file. Theoretically, edits made to an image using the Photos app (on iOS or macOS) are "non-destructive," meaning that you can always revert to the original image anytime after editing. **Now, the problem:** For the life of me, I cannot understand if these AAE files are actually good for anything once they exist. If you try to import an original image file and its AAE into the Photos app, you only see the original image. The edits don't seem to transfer. Likewise, advice from Apple and user forums regarding the transfer of edited photos suggest that you use iMessage, AirDrop, or other methods to copy the *edited* image itself to the new destination. This process, however, defeats the idea of non-destructive edits since it will prevent you from ever reverting to the *original* image. **Finally, the question:** Does the AAE sidecar file serve any purpose? If so, what does it actually offer a user or program once it exists? Can we *do* anything with it?

I create non-professional/hobbyist digital art. Recently, an author approached me to create a book cover because he likes my digital paintings. This is my first book cover. The image requirement is 3000x3000 pixels. I finished the work and the Photoshop file (PSD) is 3000x3000 pixels. The artwork is fine, but I wasn't quite satisfied with the overall color/tone from my tweaks in Photoshop. If I open the image on the iPad and go to **Edit**, then use the magic wand, everything looks beautiful. It's exactly what I want. However, any edits I save on the iPad (then email myself) are much smaller. According to the info on my Mac, the original JPG is a file of 3,573,894 bytes (3.6 MB on disk). After color change/save in iPad the image JPG is 1,538,390 bytes (1.5 MB on disk). Additionally, when you zoom in, the iPad-corrected file is noticeably grainy compared to the original. This auto-color correction on the iPad looks so good. Is there no way to preserve the original size/quality when using this feature?

I'd like to be able to add torn edges to images in the clipboard on my Mac. I do a lot of documentation and having the ability to add a torn edge around a screen shot helps the people that try to click the button in the screenshots understand that its an image of the button, not the button itself... I used Greenshot on Windows but now I've moved to Mac I've found that greenshot on Mac just lacks too many features so I'm now using Shottr which has all the features I need except torn edge. 'Torn edge' adds a border to the image to make it look like its been torn from a larger sheet of paper. In greenshot it looks like the image on this page: https://getgreenshot.org/2014/12/22/a-little-present-from-us-greenshot-1-2/ or this image Image In Pages it looks like this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4741142?sortBy=best I have looked at using imagemagick or Pages along with automator to automatically create a copy of the image in a subfolder of 'screenshots' that has the effect applied but being new to scripting on this mac I'm not even sure what words to put into google to search. Any pointers on where to start would be appreciated. If there is a javascript solution that might also work as I also use CopyQ which can process the clipboard contents using ECMAScript Is this something that can be automated?

What's a good program to batch resize 100,000 JPEG images?
The program should run in batch mode to resize all files in a folder and then save new files to different folder. An option for setting JPEG quality would be great, too.
