After upgrading my 2015 MBP to Sierra this past weekend, I've had a lot of issues with Samba, Veracrypt, and even VMware Fusion. VeraCrypt will frequently give the error in the title, mount_osxfuse: the OSXFUSE file system is not available (255), when I attempt to mount a valid encrypted volume. There's nothing wrong with the volume itself, and sometimes if I reboot, I can get VeraCrypt to work properly, but it's certainly touch and go. OSXFUSE documentation and googling hasn't suggested any fixes for this issue. I've attempted to uninstall and reinstall OSXFUSE without any luck. Whether it works or not seems random after restarts. Obviously, restarting this often sucks. I restarted on average 3-4 times a year on Yosemite, and I've restarted about a dozen times since upgrading to Sierra dealing with these problems. I'd like to know if there's a permanent fix for this, otherwise I'll be dealing with my encrypted volumes on a Win 10 VM (when VM Fusion works, anyway...yeesh).

I am trying to mount a TrueCrypt file on my Mac (OS X 10.8). When I do so I get the following error: > hdiutil: attach failed - no mountable file system That is all there is. I tried running from the command line, but it switches to the GUI and then gives the same error. * The password is correct. It gives a different error, if I mistype it. * The file is mountable and readable on Linux (Kubuntu 12.08 and 13.04) * I have two files were this happens (one is 470 Gb, the other is 300 Gb). One file where this is not the problem and at least reading works fine (haven't tested writing). That file is only 90 Gb. * The external disk where these files are on is formatted as ext4, which I mount through ext4fuse. Please help me, I am in the process of copying the data onto a Mac compatible external disk. At the moment I am rsyncing over Wifi and it requires two computers running and takes ages. # UPDATE 1. Yesterday night, I copied the 300 Gb file to my Mac formatted external disk. The same problem happened, thus I'd conclude that it is not an ext4fuse issue. 2. The TrueCrypt volume is internally formatted as ext4. 3. It does not contain a hidden volume.

I originally asked this question which never got an answer beyond the fact that you apparently can't do this on a Mac. So finally I've given up and have fired up my Windows gaming box just for this purpose. Now I can run VeraCrypt (a TrueCrypt fork) and use it's "Portable Mode", but I can't for the life of me actually get it to work such that I have an encrypted partition that can be opened on both Windows and OSX. And the docs basically assume everything "just works" and haven't proven to be very helpful. At the moment I have created a USB stick with a very small unencrypted FAT partition which can be seen by the Mac, and a FAT VeraCrypt encrypted partition which can be seen on Windows *and* the mac. It mounts fine with the password on Windows, however when I run VeraCrypt on the Mac and try to mount it, I'm met with an error: VeraCrypt requires OSXFUSE 2.3 or later with MacFUSE compatibility layer installer. Please ensure that you have selected this compatibility layer during OSXFUSE installation. Some googling on that error message has just left me more confused. Given that I'm running OSX Mavericks, and this image *must* be accessible to both Windows (versions >= XP preferably) and OSX (Mavericks or higher) without installing anything special (stock OS in other words), what do I need to do to get this to work? Note also that I don't care about hiding the fact that VeraCrypt is being used, and I will not upgrade from Mavericks. I just want to be able to store some sensitive documents securely such that they can easily be moved between workstations and opened on either Windows or OSX by anyone with the password.

After reading articles about the state of Truecrypt in February 2015, I decided to download the last stable version of Truecrypt that allows full usage of Truecrypt: that is, version 7.1a > 7.2 version that can only be used to view, but no longer to create new, TrueCrypt volumes. see https://www.grc.com/misc/truecrypt/truecrypt.htm I then proceeded to install this on my Mac, running on Yosemite 10.10 But I got the error message "truecrypt 7.1a requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later", see below. truecrypt 7.1a requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later on Yosemite 10.10 I guess it's simply a schoolboy error from a developer of the Truecrypt team, as it considers 10.4 being above 10.10, or maybe it's rather Apple who messed up & should have consistantly used 2 digits after the dot (i.e. use 10.04 rather than 10.4). In any case, I find myself unable to install Truecrypt. Anyone found a solution for this?

I've been trying for a couple of hours to figure out how to encrypt my external harddrive with TrueCrypt. I need it to be formatted as NTFS, however TrueCrypt doesn't let me choose any other filesystem than HFS+ (Mac OS Extended). This is how the TrueCrypt window looks like upon trying to pick the filesystem: Image I've got both Tuxera NTFS and MacFuse installed so I can perfectly mount, write, read and format disks as NTFS via the Disk Utility. I just can't seem to encrypt it via TrueCrypt. The reason I need it to be NTFS is that it needs to be 100% Windows compatible with as little hassle as possible, otherwise I would have settled with HFS+. I'm using OS X 10.8.5 on a 2011 MacBook Pro, the external harddrive is a Western-Digitals 1TB drive.

I recently upgraded from snow leopard to mavericks and couldn't mount a truecrypt volume that was on an NTFS partition (which had always worked before). Following some advice on a forum, I installed osxfuse which didn't solve the problem but stopped the mac booting. After rebooting in safe mode, it seems I had both MacFuse and osxFuse installed. I was able to uninstall osxfuse and now the mac boots ok, but since osxFuse is supposed to be a successor to MacFuse, I presume I should really be uninstalling MacFuse. If try to uninstall MAcFuse from the system preferences it asks for the system password and appears to be removing it, but then afterwards still shows version 2.0.3 installed. To be honest I've never heard of either of these two programs before yesterday. I have no idea whether MacFuse was already installed before the Mavericks upgrade or whether having both installed at the same time was the cause of the boot failure. Am I right in assuming that if I want to mount a truecrypt volume on an NTFS partition from Mavericks, I need to have only OsxFuse and not MacFuse installed? If so can anyone help me with how to uninstall MacFuse?

TrueCrypt had a mode called "Traveller Mode" on Windows, that allows for the encrypted volume/file to be accessed without requiring an installation of TrueCrypt itself. Unfortunately this functionality is not in the Mac version (nor is it in VeraCrypt). I want to have a USB stick that will be accessible on both Mac and Windows (with the password), without anyone having to install anything first. I have tried creating two volumes using FAT format - 1 that is encrypted and 1 smaller one that is not, then placing a copy of the installed VeraCrypt.app onto the unencrypted volume. Unfortunately that copy of the app crashes when launched on a computer without VeraCrypt installed. Is there a way to create a portable, cross platform, encrypted USB stick with VeraCrypt or TrueCrypt on a Mac running OSX Mavericks and if so, what is it?

**Summary** I want to restore any of the OS and data files my Mac OS X computers to any previous state I "save" (aka "backup"), so I can revert back to a known-working software state when a change causes a problem (like a problematic OS or application-software upgrade). I want to do this without Internet-bandwidth limitations (hence the Drobo is preferred, over a cloud-only-based backup). **Implementation Challenges** What solutions can solve limitations #1 and #2 (listed below) for the following scenario, and still meet the requirements served by CCC + Drobo ? I prefer to keep the Drobo, but I expect to replace and/or augment CCC with something else/additional. However, I'll evaluate any solution, no matter how big the change. (Within reason. I have to stick with Mac OS X, for now.) **More Details** I currently employ Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to copy my entire MacBook Air (it's primary 'Mac HD' drive) historically running 10.9.5 and 10.10.5 to a Drobo Mini . I can restore my entire 'Mac HD' drive, including the OS, to the state saved on my Drobo backup by booting off a USB flash thumbdrive, then running a CCC restore from the Drobo -> Mac HD. This is my _only_ reliably means I know to reset my OS/apps/data/etc back to a known working state, especially after a 'Software Update' screws something up. This happens most often when I update to a new Mac OS X, decide its newly-introduced bugs are not worth it, and then I downgrade. (Happened with Mavericks and Yosemite. I suspect it will happen with El Capitan--when I first try it.) I then wait for the new Mac OS X to become mature enough for me to upgrade to it, or I'm simply forced to upgrade for whatever reason (like app support phases out for the older OS X version). **Limitations**. The above works well, but there's 2 limitations I'd like to overcome: 1. OS X's FileVault can not encrypt my Drobo , given its thin provisioning . Thus my files on the Drobo are exposed "in the open" if some untrusted person/entity acquires/steals my Drobo. 2. Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) can not automatically or at least not easily restore (in the above scenario) to a backup state/time prior to the latest backup. **Time Machine**. It is *not* a viable solution. I've tested it numerous times in scenario similar to above, and it has failed (miserably and obviously) every time. **CrashPlan**. I've spoken with 3 different pre-sales tech representatives at CrashPlan/Code42. None of them claim to solve the above, even though I suspect they can do it as well as CCC does it today, with the aforementioned limitations, of course. **TrueCrypt**. Ultimately, I suspect I'll need an backup-application-level and/or TrueCrypt-based encryption to solve this. But I'm open to anything that meets all the requirements.

After upgrading to Lion, NTFS-3G has been encountering problems. I uninstalled NTFS-3G and MacFUSE, reinstalled them and rebooted; but the problem still exists: After connecting an USB-disk that has a NTFS partition the disk icon appears on the desktop andthe partition can be browsed. After ≈15 seconds I get the following pop-up: NTFS-3G could not mount … because the following problem occurred: Did not receive a signal within 15 seconds However, the partition stays mounted and it can be browsed via the same icon on the desktop. *After* this pop-up the other, HFS+, partition gets mounted and its icon displayed on the desktop. --- I could consider the above merely as a glitch, which would just slow down my workflow for 15+ seconds. **But** problem gets bigger with TrueCrypt disks: After I connect an USB-disk, which is fully encrypted with TrueCrypt, and mount it with TrueCrypt, again—as above—its icon appears on the desktop and I can browse the disk's contents. After 15 seconds I get the following pop-ups: NTFS-3G could not mount … because the following problem occurred: Did not receive a signal within 15 seconds hdiutil attach failed no mountable file systems *Translation: "hdiutil: attach failed — no mountable file systems"* At the same time, my mounted partition—which worked normally for 15 seconds—disappears from the desktop, ie. gets unmounted. I've read about similar problems after some googling, but all of them say the problem disappears with reinstalling MacFUSE and/or NTFS-3G, which is what didn't work with me. I've also tried mounting the partitions with and without caching, didn't help either. --- - **What is the signal NTFS-3G wants?** Can I give it manually, as a workaround. Or can NTFS-3G be somehow modified that it wouldn't need "the signal": the partitions work normally until the pop-up. - **Why TrueCrypt drops the partition** while normal partitions stay in the system? - **Is some hidden/visible setting in Lion blocking NTFS-3G working normally?** - And finally: **Is it just me or does this happen to others** with NTFS-3G? --- - TrueCrypt is v. 7.0a - NTFS-3G is 2010.10.2 - MacFUSE is 2.1.9 (Beta) --- It seems the problem is indeed with NTFS-3G: I downloaded the trial of Tuxera 2011.4.1 and no errors happened when mounting a NTFS partition with it.

The system log file shows the following errors: com.apple.kextd: Failed to load /Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/fusefs.kext - (libkern/kext) link error. kernel: kxld[com.google.filesystems.fusefs]: The following symbols are unresolved for this kext: kernel: kxld[com.google.filesystems.fusefs]: _OSRuntimeFinalizeCPP kernel: kxld[com.google.filesystems.fusefs]: _OSRuntimeInitializeCPP kernel: Can't load kext com.google.filesystems.fusefs - link failed. kernel: Failed to load executable for kext com.google.filesystems.fusefs. kernel: Kext com.google.filesystems.fusefs failed to load (0xdc008016). kernel: Failed to load kext com.google.filesystems.fusefs (error 0xdc008016). Do I need to update _MacFuse_ or _TrueCrypt_ to make this work again?
