How can I make an external Apple USB keyboard (via USB to C adapter) be recognised and work with my new MacBook Pro (Sequoia 15.2)?

My Apple USB keyboard with its useful numeric keypad is an old friend from iMac days and worked fine with a MacBook Air. I now have a new MacBook-Pro running Sequoia 15.2 and thought I could simply plug the USB keyboard into it via a proprietary USB-C adapter. Unfortunately this external keyboard is not recognized. Is there something that I need to do to make it discoverable?
