I seem to have run into a situation where configuring the alpine e-mail client (formerly just pine) for a specific user seems to override some configuration so that the username for the operating system account is used from within alpine to determine who the e-mail is from. Why is this happening, generally? How is the sender explicitly configured?

If I look at this in Gmail's "original" view it shows up b64 encoded (of course this is probably obvious as I'm looking at it in the browser). Do I have to convert the attachment myself? Or is there a way I can export it b64 encoded.

Looking to manually save quantities of e-mail in batches so that they're deleted and expunged from Gmail to free up space. From Alpine the error message received is: [No messages expunged from folder "[Gmail]/All Mail"] Moving these messages to Gmail/Trash will enable expunge to function correctly. Presumably this is a safety feature of Google? Preventing deletion of e-mail in the All Mail directory over IMAP would seem to be a configuration of Gmail. Aside from running dovecot and postfix, are there other suggestions? *Why the random down-vote? At least say what the problem with the question is.* ----------------- I'm using Gmail and Alpine for e-mail with IMAP. Mail sent from Alpine has this field: X-Google-Original-From: foo whereas it should be my Gmail address, of course. where can I explicitly set this value with Alpine? see : Configuring other Headers If you want to configure the value of a header that does not appear in the above list, you will need to edit your configuration file. The way to do this is by going to the configuration screen and adding the following text to the Customized Headers option: Customized Headers = Header_name: Value The Value part above is not required, nor is the colon after the Header_name. Here are some examples of possible additions you may want to consider Customized Headers = From: "Your Name" , Reply-To: "Your Name" , Control:, Status:, X-Status: But this is an "x header" value. -------------------- new info: Seems like setting "use sender instead of x-x sender" helps with forcing Google to use the gmail address. This is manually entering a full e-mail into the "from" header when composing. Perhaps there's a way to autopopulate that? Still testing how that works.

Is it possible to alternate between from addresses on alpine?
I added a few from addresses in `Customized headers` in Alpine's configuration, that allows me to edit the `From` field when composing email. Now I'm just writing them myself and I wonder whether there is a way (a key binding maybe) that allows me to alternate between the available from addresses?

Looking around in google haven't give me any hints so far as to what the issue can be. Also, I can't access alpine site (https://alpine.x10host.com/) . The important stuff of .pinerc are:
smtp-server : smtp.gmail.com:465/ssl/auth=xoauth2/user=user@gmail.com
           inbox-path : {imap.gmail.com:993/ssl/auth=xoauth2/user=user@gmail.com}INBOX
     postponed-folder : {imap.gmail.com:993/ssl/auth=xoauth2/user=user@gmail.com}[GMAIL]/Drafts
I also tried the smtp-server with tls and port 587. EDIT: Kind of testing out, I deleted .pine-passfile to do the authorization again. That worked, meaning I can access gmail now, but I have to re-do the whole process every time since there is no .pine-passfile created now.... Any ideas?

I have a rather strange situation. I'm running a dovecot/postfix based mail server on debian. Most of the time everyone accesses the server using IMAP from their thunderbird/outlook clients, but for some reason I needed to access one of the mailboxes locally. They are all tied to system users so I just fired up alpine to deal with some overlarge attachment that didn't want to download. Alpine worked just fine I got the attachment, and was careful not to expungeor delete anything. When next the person looked at the account through IMAP though, their inbox was empty. The alpine client locally still sees all the emails, but they are invisible through IMAP. I tested and this happens upon any closing of the Alpine application. It would seem as though it performs PoP, but I can't see that anywhere, plus it's a local account. Edit: Just to clarify I'm talking about Alpine the mail client which is a successor to Pine. Not the distribution. Also I checked and for some reason the Alpine is moving (as Bodo suggested) the mail from /var/mail/user to /home/user/mbox or similar (the message dissappears quickly). It does not do the same thing for a different account I have on the same server where I do not believe I've made any changes though. Edit 2: So I figured out why the other account I had was not doing it. In particular the .pinerc (config file alpine apparently uses as a successor to pine) of the account where emails don't get moved when viewing has a line disable-these-drivers=mbox The thing is if I add this line to the account that does move mails, it loses access to the mails that have been moved. So I'm still not quite where I would like to be. Any idea what I might have set up wrongly?

I have suffered from important emails not being received, while I do not receive a bounce message. I wonder whether one factor in this problem is that my laptop, which sometimes has a dynamically-allocated IP address, appears to be the sender if Alpine talks directly to some (major) SMTP server. My email may get less respect if it comes from a laptop. So can I change the smtp-server setting in Alpine to use sendmail on a different (fixed IP) machine, rather than the sendmail on my laptop? I have passwordless ssh keys set up already my remote (tunnel) server. What string can I put to tell Alpine to tunnel elsewhere for sendmail? Right now for smtp-server I am just specifying a remote SMTP server's IP name and port number, with the Alpine-format tls or ssl and user= string, but I want instead to pass these via ssh to the mailer on another GNU/Linux machine. (I'm actually using the smtp-rules setting rather than the default smtp-server setting.) A bit more detail (to explain my motivation): Here is the bottom part of the header of a very important email message which was never received (major damage ensued) and which generated no bounce: Received: from Mylaptop-high (192-0-111-216.cpe.teksavvy.com [192.0.111.216]) (authenticated bits=0) (User authenticated as meuser@ALUM.MIT.EDU) by outgoing-alum.mit.edu (8.14.7/8.12.4) with ESMTP id 03F39FMc032212 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 bits=256 verify=NOT); Tue, 14 Apr 2020 23:09:16 -0400 Date: Tue, 14 Apr 2020 23:09:15 -0400 (EDT) From: C P meuser To: Important recipient Subject: life or death emergency Message-ID: User-Agent: Alpine 2.21 (DEB 202 2017-01-01) Other servers will look at this and find that it originated on my laptop, which was currently at home with my ISP's IP (teksavvy). Not optimally, I sent it via MIT's smtp server rather than McGill's. However, MIT authenticated me and successfully delivered it back to me through a bcc address. But something stopped it getting to the Recipient. That, presumably, was a Microsoft server which McGill uses. So my concern is that maybe it looks bad to have something coming from my laptop, which is portable, as a first MTA. Maybe that is wrong. When I'm at work, the same laptop has a fixed IP and an IP name, but this was sent from home. I don't really know what I'm fighting, but I'm trying to minimize reasons to reject my emails. So if (especially when at home) I sent from a fixed IP machine at work (ssh pipe) rather than from my laptop, maybe it would be better.

I use an email client called Alpine. Currently I start it in one of several different modes in order to specify the outgoing SMTP server based on what I'm doing, in particular the From address that I wish to use. What would be much more convenient is if I could simply direct Alpine to use my own SMTP server (on my laptop), which in turn would choose a relay server based on the From address of each message I'm sending. I am hoping someone is already doing this (it seems like it should be a common need given recent tightening of restrictions on accepting mail) and that it is not complicated. (As a bonus, I'd also like to be able to start Alpine in a mode which uses a local server that waits until Monday morning to send out messages.) Here is possibly the same question: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/2744/changing-smtp-authentication-in-mutt-based-on-from-e-mail-address , but it is old and so are references on esmtp – I'm not sure esmtp is up to date with modern security protocols, etc.

I use Alpine to read Gmail. I have several Linux machines that I login to and I'd like to use Alpine Remote Config so all settings can be downloaded to the machine I'm running Alpine on and importantly, my remote/Gmail address book is available. I'd appreciate if someone can point me to a set of instructions or confirm if this is even possible with Gmail. If its not possible with Gmail, I was wondering if I could use a RPI as server to store those configs so clients that connect to the server can download the necessary files. Update: I tried this: $ alpine -p "{mailserver.org:143/user=jimbob123/tls}remote_pinerc" from Archlinux Wiki and it didn't really work, perhaps Gmail needs to be setup first.

When I run the viewer command in alpine from within GNU screen it tells me "viewer command completed" but it doesn't actually bring up Lynx (or any other viewer). I even tried writing my own script that would just write the arguments out to a file and no dice. I tried piping the message to a file, and I get "Can't exec (script) no such file or directory" However, if I close out alpine, detach from screen, and then start alpine, I can use the viewer or pipe messsages just fine. So, what is the problem here and how can I fix it? ### Update 1: The value of TERM depends on what I login with - from Eterm on my laptop, TERM is Eterm outside of screen and screen inside. From Connect Bot it's screen attached or not. And here is my .screenrc $ cat .screenrc defscrollback 10000 caption always "%?%F%{-b bc}%:%{-b bb}%?%C|%D|%M %d|%H%?%F%{+u wb}%? %L=%-Lw%45>%{+b by}%n%f*%t%{-}%+Lw%-0<" shell bash bind j focus down bind k focus up bind t focus top bind b focus bottom screen -t 'system' screen -t 'alpine' screen -t 'programming' screen -t 'suppliments' screen -t 'ssh' screen -t 'webby' screen -t 'ipython' ipython screen -t 'mpg321' screen -t 'irssi' **Update 2:** Changing the term value didn't fix anything. I tried tmux for a while, and that actually worked, but I had some issues with it properly sizing based on what screen I was using (whatever the smallest dimension was). So now I'm using a somewhat strange hack - I run a tmux session inside my screen session and run alpine inside that tmux session. Viewing URLs works perfectly fine now, but obviously this is not the ideal situation, and I'd welcome any better fixes.
