Are Arch Community Packages safe from virus or malwares?

I am new on Linux ecosystem and have some confusions regarding the terminology that are being used. With that being said, my reason to switch to a Linux Distro from Windows because it provides a unified package manager from where I can download and install software, without needing to go on the web and find necessary ones. The distro I am currently using is Ubuntu 20.04.2.0, which is good, but the packages they provide are kind of old and I would not be complaining if they had at least provided the LTS version of the software. So, I recently came across Arch and Manjaro which are rolling release distros, but I am interested as it provides both the latest versions and LTS versions of the softwares. That is great. But, I am little worried because most of the software I use are in the Community Repo (Node JS, Dotnet Core and gh). And, here is quote from Arch documentation:
> community contains packages that have been adopted by Trusted Users from the Arch User Repository. Some of these packages may eventually make the transition to the core or extra repositories as the developers consider them crucial to the distribution.
It says "Trusted Users" (respect for them) pick the packages from the AUR to "Community Repo". From some online forums and articles, I learnt that it a good practice to avoid using AUR as it may cause unwanted things or even infect ones PC with viruses and malwares. Once again, I am a noob in Linux world and have absolutely no idea about Arch Linux and its derivatives. So, I wanted to know, is it safe to use packages from the Community Repo. Does the "Trusted Users" (maintainers of Community Repo) check for validity and security of the AURs that transition to the Community Repo?

I'm trying to update my system via yaourt, but I'm getting an error due to a python package installed with pip instead of yaourt.
I'm not succeeding in forcing yaourt to install the update, and I'd like to avoid to remove the package with pip and reinstall it with yaourt.
These are the commands I tried :
yaourt -Syu --aur
yaourt -Suya
yaourt -Susya --force
This is the output I get all the times :
:: Proceed with installation? [Y/n] y

mutagen: /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/mutagen-1.36-py2.7.egg-info exists in filesystem

How can I force yaourt to update the all packages?

desktop version on my Arch system. I am getting internal error: payload not recognized!
while building package for -server
(which is required by pgadmin4-desktop) using -si
command. Also, I've tried to install pgadmin4 using these 2 commands: clone https://aur.archlinux.org/pgadmin4-py.git
, and pgadmin4-py/ && makepkg -si --noconfirm
, but continue to get the same error. I can't finish compiling, because this error appears and compiling process goes into a loop of these errors and I need to stop it myself by pressing
+
. I don't understand where is the problem. Would be grateful for your help.

Is the tool out-of-date, or is the AUR out-of-date, or is there another problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you!

When trying to update system, I encounter a peculiar issue where
yay
identifies that a nodejs-lts-gallium
would need to be upgraded, through direct? or indirect (most likely) depdency:

It seems that this package has been removed from aur
. I'm not able to find out how to get away from this message, as I don't seem to find which package is dependent upon this package:
$ pacman -Q | grep nodejs
And looking in paclog
about this package, I find that it was removed:
paclog --package=nodejs-lts-gallium

I was learning rust. I am building a simple GUI application that scrapes through aur and installs a package. I am using tauri for GUI.
So, to install an aur application, I will run
makepkg -si
inside the package directory.
But, it asks for root password in the middle of installation.
After searching web, I came to know, I can use pkexec to ask password graphically but pkexec is like using sudo and running makepkg as sudo is not allowed.
Any idea of what should I do? Are there any articles where I can look into ?

What is the difference? There is a man page segment for yay -Sc
:
-Sc Yay will also clean cached AUR package and any untracked Files in the
cache. Cleaning untracked files will wipe any downloaded sources or
built packages but will keep already downloaded vcs sources.
But nothing for yay -Scc
.

Recently, I tried the Archlinux on WSL2. But I got into trouble when I used Paru as the AUR helper to install some packages like bochs. It said:
error: Permission denied (os error 13)
I knew it was probably caused by the wrong owner of .cargo
and .rustup,
according to this [issue](https://github.com/rust-lang/cargo/issues/6757) . But it was ineffective after I used chown
, changing the owner of .cargo
and .rustup
recursively.
So, does anyone know how to solve it?
BTW: I did not have logs either. There is nothing about the process of installing in file pacman.log
.
The commands I used:
paru -S bochs
sudo chown -R username:usergroup .cargo .rustup

Malicious code has been found and deleted later from 3 AUR packages
acroread
, blaz
and minergate
(e,g: acroread PKGBUILD detail ). It was found in a commit released by a malicious user by changing the owner of the orphaned AUR package and including a malicious curl
command.
The curl
command will download the main bash script x
then the second script u
(u.sh
) in order to create a systemd service and using a function to collect some system data (non sensitive data) but the scripts can be modified by the attacker to be uploaded sequentially.
In practice not all users have the ability to check the PKGBUILD before building any package on their systems for some reasons (require some knowledge , take more time etc...). To understand how it work I have downloaded and uploaded the 2 bash scripts on this pastbin page .
What is the easiest way to check an AUR package for malicious code?

I've always used either windows, macOS or linux distros that have brave to be downloaded through official means, but now I'm planning to switch to arch linux and I'll have to download it from the AUR.
I checked online and apparently brave is only available through the AUR in arch based distros, so I was wondering if it is safe to use it although it is maintained by common users.

So I took over an orphaned AUR package that contains separate sources for 32-bit and 64-bit packages. I'm on a 64-bit machine, but I want to also test that the 32-bit installation works before I push the updated PKGBUILD. I've read through the [PKGBUILD](https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PKGBUILD) section of the Arch Linux Wiki, but it doesn't mention anything about doing this.
Example of what PKGBUILD looks like (simplified):
pkgname=...
pkgver=...
pkgdesc=...
arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
depends_x86_64=(
'lib32-freetype2')
depends_i686=(
'freetype2')
source_x86_64=("https://site.com/download/{pkgver}_amd64.deb "
"https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/l/lib32-freetype2/lib32-freetype2-2.11.0-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst ")
source_i686=("https://site.com/download/{pkgver}_i386.deb "
"https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/f/freetype2/freetype2-2.11.0-4-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst ")
sha256sums_i686=('SKIP'
'SKIP')
sha256sums_x86_64=('SKIP'
'SKIP')
package() {
install -d -m0755 "${pkgdir}"/usr/{share/applications,share/pkgname}
}
How can I force makepkg to build the 32bit version?
