When I run
tracker daemon
I get:
Miners:

I thought I disabled all tracker activities, what is it doing?
The fan is going like crazy and a reboot does not improve the situation.

Gnome-desktop's 'tracker' spams syslog at boot

$ sudo journalctl -b
) is being spammed by messages about tracker-miner
not being able to execute sparql
along with the tracker-store.service
unit being masked. I do not remember masking this unit. Very small extract below:
Apr 26 07:47:05 HOSTNAME dbus-daemon: [session uid=1000 pid=3165] Activating via systemd: service name='org.freedesktop.Tracker1' unit='tracker-store.service' requested by ':1.54' (uid=1000 pid=3441 comm="/usr/lib/tracker-miner-fs ")
Apr 26 07:47:05 HOSTNAME dbus-daemon: [session uid=1000 pid=3165] Activation via systemd failed for unit 'tracker-store.service': Unit tracker-store.service is masked.
Apr 26 07:47:05 HOSTNAME tracker-miner-f: (Sparql buffer) Error in array-update: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.systemd1.UnitMasked: Unit tracker-store.service is masked.
Apr 26 07:47:05 HOSTNAME tracker-miner-f: Could not execute sparql: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.systemd1.UnitMasked: Unit tracker-store.service is masked.
Apr 26 07:47:05 HOSTNAME dbus-daemon: [session uid=1000 pid=3165] Activating via systemd: service name='org.freedesktop.Tracker1' unit='tracker-store.service' requested by ':1.54' (uid=1000 pid=3441 comm="/usr/lib/tracker-miner-fs ")

Apr 26 07:47:05 HOSTNAME tracker-miner-f: (Sparql buffer) Error in array-update: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.systemd1.UnitMasked: Unit tracker-store.service is masked.
I also see:
$ systemctl --user status tracker-store
● tracker-store.service
Loaded: masked (Reason: Unit tracker-store.service is masked.)
Active: inactive (dead)
and
$ tracker status
Currently indexed: 50073 files, 3018 folders
Remaining space on database partition: 39.0 GB (24.28%)
(tracker status:17788): Tracker-CRITICAL **: 19:47:02.875: Could not get miner progress for 'org.freedesktop.Tracker1.Miner.Extract': Timeout was reached
(tracker status:17788): Tracker-CRITICAL **: 19:47:27.899: Could not get miner progress for 'org.freedesktop.Tracker1.Miner.Files': Timeout was reached
All data miners are idle, indexing complete
indicating that indeed the service unit is masked and its has completed its indexing job.
Quite diverse posts involve similar keywords as what appears in the boot syslog: "tracker-miner"(1 ), "sparql" not executing (2 ), a masked "tracker-store.service" unit (3 ). tracker
has been held responsible for monopolizing CPU , hogging memory and storage space , violating user privacy, etc, ever since it started shipping systematically as part of gnome-desktop.
No post got me closer to answering:- Why do I get those syslog messages at boot ?
Note: Log verbosity is minimum and set to "errors" by default for all
tracker
apps. I don't know how to reduce it to nil. I also assume (perhaps wrongly) that if tracker
was well configured, it would not be at the origin of so many error messages at boot.- If so, what do I need to fix/reconfigure for those errors to go away ?

How do I disable systemd-controlled daemons running under user 'lp' account?
I see various systemd-controlled daemons running under the `lp` account Notably, the `tracker` service is running and trying to index files for the `lp` account. ```bash $ pstree lp systemd─┬─(sd-pam) ├─dbus-daemon ├─goa-daemon───3*[{goa-daemon}] ├─goa-identity-se───2*[{goa-identity-se}] ├─gvfs-afc-...

For example, I see a tracker*
service is running under the lp
user account, and it's writing tracker database files to /var/spool/lpd/{.cache,.local}
.
My question is: Is there a clean way to disable (mask) systemd service units for a specific user account, if that user account is a non-login account?
I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 and systemd 245 (245.4-4ubuntu3.13), in case that's relevant.

I am currently reading a lot of texts on my computer, some which have wide rows, and shifting focus to write summaries.
When I read on paper i sometimes use a ruler to keep track of my location, I find this helps when I get tired. Therefore, I would like something similar on linux.
Is there any way to code some transparent ruler that follows the mouse pointer?
Most of the ruler applications like "kruler" are not attached to the mouse.
I also tried the cross-hairs in the accessibility but it's not quite what I want as i find the vertical lines distracting. And want something where I can set the opacity.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start with this problem?
Best,
Michael

Please, don't suggest installing [Recoll](https://www.lesbonscomptes.com/recoll/) . I used to use it quite a while but its indexer was resource hog and I switched to [Tracker](https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/Tracker) .

[5.0.9-arch1-1-ARCH with gnome-desktop 3.32.1.2-1 and tracker 2.2.1]
This is a follow-up on a previous answered question , where I unmasked the
tracker-store.service
, which was spamming my syslog at boot already and disabled the search option in Nautilus from the GUI. I also erased the complete database index, with $ tracker reset --hard
, as I never use Nautilus.
The message that spams my syslog
is:
> dbus-daemon: [session uid=1000 pid=1492] Activation via systemd
> failed for unit 'tracker-extract.service': Unit
> tracker-extract.service is masked.
... most of those lines forming a repeat sequence, as obtained from: $ sudo journalctl -b
. The number of occurences increases rapidly with time, at an coarsely estimated rate of 1200/min.
The truncated syslog listing is here . (It is way too big to upload whole.) I checked that I actually have no tracker-extract.service
unit active
, enabled
, or masked
. The tracker-extract
service unit does not appear in:
$ sudo systemctl list-dependencies --all | grep -e extract -e tracker

Will tracker-store eventually stop stealing cpu?
I've understood that tracker-store is a part of Gnome and that it has something to do with indexing a lot of stuff. I've understood that tracker-store is a part of Gnome and that it has something to do with indexing a lot of stuff. Many people have complained about it and I have found lots of instructions for how to disable it. Like these:
https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/9822/how-do-i-disable-tracker-in-gnome/
https://www.soimort.org/notes/171103/
But one question I have not found an answer to yet is if it eventually will go down to reasonable levels. It seems reasonable that it has to do a lot of work on a newly installed system.
So do I have to disable it to stop it from stealing cpu, or will it eventually stop on its own? So far it has been running for two days.
Another question is if there is a way to see how far it has come in its indexing progress.
EDIT:
I think (but I'm not sure) I found a command to see the progress, but that did certainly not make me happy. The command is
tracker status
and it shows this after two days:
$ sudo tracker status
Currently indexed: 0 files, 0 folders
Remaining space on database partition: 43.2 GB (88.16%)
All data miners are idle, indexing complete
