How to scroll the screen using the middle click?

On Windows, most programs with large, scrollable text containers (e.g. all browsers, most word processors and IDEs) let you press the middle mouse button and then move the mouse to scroll. This scrolling is smooth and allows you to scroll very quickly using just the mouse.
When I've used Linux on *laptops*, two-finger scrolling performs roughly the same function; it's easy to scroll down a page quickly (much more quickly than one can by scrolling a mouse wheel) but the scrolling remains smooth enough to allow precise positioning.
I am unsure how to achieve the same thing when running Linux on a Desktop with a mouse. As far as I can tell after a whole bunch of Googling, there are neither application-specific settings to swap to Windows-style middle mouse button behaviour, nor any system-wide settings to achieve the same effect.
Just to make this concrete, let's say - if it's relevant - that I'm asking in the context of Firefox, Google Chrome, Gedit and Eclipse on a recent version of either Mint (what I use at home) or Ubuntu (what I use at work). I suspect this is a fairly distro-agnostic and application-agnostic question, though.
As far as I can tell, my options for scrolling are:
* Scroll with the mousewheel - slow!
* Use the PgUp / PgDn keys - jumps a huge distance at a time so can't be used for precise positioning, and is less comfortable than using the mouse
* Drag the scroll bar at the right hand side of the screen up and down like I used to do on old Windows PCs with two-button mice. This is what I do in practice, but it's just plain less comfortable than Windows-style middle-mouse scrolling; on a huge widescreen, it takes me most of a second just to move the cursor over from the middle of the screen to the scrollbar, and most of a second to move it back again, and I have to take my eyes off the content I'm actually scrolling to do this.
None of these satisfy me! This UI issue is the single thing that poisons my enjoyment of Linux on desktops and almost makes me wish I was using a laptop touchpad instead of a mouse. It irritates me enough that I've concluded that either I'm missing some basic Linux UI feature that solves this problem, or I'm just an oversensitive freak and it doesn't even bother anyone else - but I'm not sure which.
So my questions are:
1. Does Windows-style middle mouse button scrolling exist anywhere in the Linux world, or is it really purely a Windows thing? In particular, do any Linux web browsers let you use Windows-style scrolling?
2. Are there any mechanisms for scrolling pages that exist in Linux but not in Windows, especially ones that perform the role I've described?
3. Any other solutions that I'm missing?

I have a HP mouse.
Recently, I have been practicing implementing the device driver.
Instead of using the hid-generic driver, I would like to use my customized driver for the Bluetooth device.
I don't have any ideas about how to implement it in another way for this character device.
My idea is kind of similar to my previous implementation on the USB driver by using the USB API instead of the hid-usb static driver.
I am wondering if there is any API or subsystem category related to Bluetooth that I can use to implement a driver for the mouse.
Or I am wondering if there are any better ideas or designs about this.

However, I've found it difficult to paste because pressing the wheel often results in a bit of scroll too. I most often notice this in konsole where I'm pasting to bash and suddenly find myself in older shell history rather than appending to the command I was building.
Anyone know of a neat trick to make the first few scroll ticks be ignored or achieve something similar?

_OS community,
I’m experiencing persistent USB issues on my Acer Aspire 3 running Pop!_OS 22.04, and I’d appreciate some guidance. The problem involves frequent USB controller failures and device disconnections, which don’t occur when I use the same peripherals on Windows 11. I’ve tried multiple troubleshooting steps, including updating the kernel, disabling the touchpad, and using a new mouse with a lower polling rate, but the issue persists.
**Background**
Hardware: Acer Aspire 3 notebook.
OS: Pop!_OS 22.04 (based on Ubuntu 22.04).
Peripherals: Previously used a Corsair Harpoon RGB PRO (1000Hz polling) and now a YSPRINGTECH USB OPTICAL MOUSE (lower polling rate), plus an internal ELAN050A touchpad.
Observation: On Windows 11 (dual-boot), there are no USB problems with the same setup, suggesting a Linux-specific driver or configuration issue.
**Symptoms**
USB devices disconnect or require resets.
The xHCI controller reports errors, especially during resume from suspend.
Additional issues with power management, Acer WMI, and SATA links are present, which might be related.
**Troubleshooting Attempted**
Updated the kernel to the latest HWE version (e.g., 5.15.0-107).
Disabled the touchpad (ID 17) using xinput disable 17 to rule out its interference.
Switched to a mouse with a lower polling rate (10000us 4 times, consider switching to WQ_UNBOUND

I’d love to get advice from the community on how to stabilize the USB subsystem. Could this be a driver issue, a BIOS incompatibility, or a power management problem? Any suggestions on further diagnostics or fixes would be greatly appreciated. I’m hesitant to update the BIOS without confirmation, given the risks.
Thanks in advance for your support!

I am running Fedora Work Station 41 on GNOME and Wayland. I am using a Logitech MX Master 3 Wireless mouse with the provided dongle. I also have Solaar installed.
If I right click on a System Window control (this wording may be incorrect) and it opens the context menu, I cannot click on any other window or interact with anything else, using this mouse, until I either close the context menu by clicking inside the same window (as where I clicked to open the context menu) or if I choose an option from the menu. In other words, the focus is stuck on the parent window owning the right click menu, but only for the Logitech Mouse... I also have a USB Corsair mouse connected with which this problem does not reproduce. I tried installing solaar to get full control and drivers for the mouse, but no change.
This works on X11, not on wayland. I have tried searching for hours for a solution, but found nothing. I found some similar issues for other mice, but those were for X11 and editing xorg.conf. On X11 I have no issue.
Anyone have any ideas? For example here, I can only click inside the terminal or choose an action. Clicking on the window in the background or on my second monitor will not close the context menu, nor change the window focus. As I said, this works fine with a regular USB mouse. The issue also does not reproduce on "third party" context menus, such as google chrome right click. I am mainly seeing the issue with my terminal emulator (gnome terminal) and the default (nautilus) file manager context menus.

The mouse works just fine with the steamdeck and with other devices too.
I tried to use ChatGPT to solve the problem, but got into a loop and did not find any solution.

I just installed OpenBSD 6.3 on a Dell Optiplex G620 with 4 gigs of RAM, a USB keyboard and a USB mouse. The keyboard and mouse work until I log in. When the X Windows screen comes up, I get a computer icon in the bottom left corner, a graphic of my consoles in the bottom right and an xterm window in the top left corner, with the correct prompt. Then the keyboard and the mouse go dead. The cursor in the xterm window doesn’t flash.
- The first problem is just to get access to type so I can fix the settings files.
- The second problem is recognizing which files change drastically between login and the first console.
To clarify: this happened the first time I booted the computer after installing OpenBSD and every time since.

Is there any terminal shell/emulator out there that supports editing your current command with the mouse?
Specifically things like placing the cursor by clicking (useful for long commands) or double clicking and pressing delete to select and delete a word etc.
For example, the terminal at the bottom of Midnight Commander (mc) has support for placing the cursor by mouse click. I'm looking for something similar that is more terminal-focused, as mc is mainly a file manager.
It's fine if it only works under a GUI environment (I'm on Ubuntu 18.04 with GNOME3).

A couple manual restarts later, I get the mouse to work for half a second before it goes dead. I have no idea how to fix this type of problem. I suppose I could try a fresh install in the BIOS, but is there a possibly less extreme method? I spent a lot of time setting my environment up and I don't want to lose it.

I'm running **RHEL** Workstation 7.6. Ever since I set it up in November, I've had an ongoing issue with my system (and this is my daily desktop).
- On occasion, I'm unable to click on anything. I can alt-tab, and I can type in windows. The mouse will move but clicking does nothing.
- The keyboard mostly works but, say in a terminal window, I hold down the Alt key. The menu (File, Edit, View...) lights up but if I then hit Alt-F, to open the File menu, nothing happens.
- Sometimes I can click on tabs in Firefox and they change - but I can't actually bring Firefox into the foreground, nor click the X to close it.
- If I go to TTY2 (Ctrl-Aalt-F2) and then back to TTY1, it fixes it. Until the next time. Sometimes the fix only lasts for seconds but, if I keep trying, it will be okay for a long time - many minutes or hours.
Some log entries while it's acting up. The first one occurs any time I click on a gnome-shell window while it's broken:
Feb 22 08:16:33 mybox gnome-shell: pushModal: invocation of begin_modal failed

Is there a way to find the mouse/cursor state with a command?
I'm trying to make a bash script that requires the ability to probe the cursor state, e.g. if it's hovering over a link or a document I need it to behave differently than if it's neutral or hovering text. How could I go about doing this?

But my config is like this:
Section "InputClass"
Identifier "evdev pointer catchall"
MatchIsPointer "on"
Option "ButtonMapping" "1 2 3 5 4 6 7 8"
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Driver "evdev"
EndSection
With the
Option "ButtonMapping" "1 2 3 5 4 6 7 8"
I have also enabled "natural scrolling" but no luck
Anyone has come accross the same issue and solved it¿? Thank you in advance

Mouse movement speed is set to max, but still slow
Using Ubuntu 14.04/GNOME, we set the mouse move speed to max in the menu. But the mouse movement is still slow on the touchpad. A USB mouse is perfect, but we need to use the touchpad. **Question:** Is there a way to speed up the touchpad?

Mouse scroll performance is poor in Linux and there is no built-in method to control the same. Hence, I did some digging and came across
Current Touchpad settings:
Hardware and Software Details:
- OS: Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.1
- Laptop: HP AB032TX (Dual Boot: Windows 10 & Linux Mint)
- Software in question: IMWheel
- Touchpad Driver: Synaptics (Default drivers that came with Mint)
- Physical Mouse: Logitech normal optical mouse
IMWheel
. I followed this tutorial How to Adjust or Increase Mouse Scroll Wheel Speed in Linux and set my mouse scroll speed to 5.
This seemed to fix my physical mouse scroll speed. However, scrolling using the touchpad of my laptop is anything but perfect. The page seems to behave erratically and jumps every time a certain amount of page is scrolled and is very unpleasant. On disabling IMWheel, the touchpad behavior seems to return back to normal.
Is there any method to have a decent scroll speed for physical mouse and yet keep the existing scrolling experience for the touchpad in Linux? Like it is there in Windows? If there is, please guide me on how to fix this issue.
This problem literally keeps me from using Linux at all!
Given below are my current mouse and touchpad settings:
