I recently updated my workstation, and from this moment, my drivers went nuts. I was working fine before, with the
nvidia-361
drivers, and, when i finished my updates, and after rebooting the PC, il was running in "software rendering mode".
I finally get to have a correct desktop, but now, i'm quite sure the card isn't fonctionning properly, because i can't launch any simple game with 3D (like blazeRush for example, wich was running fine before).
This is the result of a lspci -vnnn

As you can see, the kernel driver in use is "nouveau", but i would like to use nvidia_375 instead.
I already tried to purge with apt like this
sudo apt purge *nvidia* xserver-xorg*nouveau* bbswitch*
but when i do that, after a reboot, "nouveau" is still here ... i can try to install again the proprietary drivers, but i will be back in the same situation as before the purge.
I'm running out of options.

Been trying different things and a work around is an openVPN server and just connect directly to the Domain Controller and Remote Desktop Server.
It would how ever be very neat to be able to just launch the RemoteApp instead.

I am using Linux Mint and my workmates are using Windows. We've got a local, shared server (also Linux) for documentation files and a weird thing happened yesterday: a windows user created a file (
.odm
) and after I changed it, the ownership of the file changed to me and all the other users, including the one who created it, had permission only to read it, although, initially (before I edited it) everyone could read, write and execute.
I don't know what information I need to give to make context clearer, but I'd like to understand how that happened. I mean, it seems very weird for a different user to be able to change permissions and ownership of a shared server's file.
The server is running samba, and all the clients are using that to access the files.

Everything seems to be working fine, however I notice that my fan seems to be on at high speed a lot of the time.
Can someone please tell me definitive troubleshooting steps that are relevant to this distro.
Also if there are commands that I can run to get the relevant system information required to troubleshoot the issue it would be great to know these too.
**Edit**
In case it is relevant, the screen brightness applet control wasn't working so I followed steps below - perhaps that altered something?
me@computer ~ $ ls /sys/class/backlight/
acpi_video0 intel_backlight
sudo touch /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
sudo gedit /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
and then added this to the file:
Section "Device"
Identifier "card0"
Driver "intel"
Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
BusID "PCI:0:2:0"EndSection
http://itsfoss.com/fix-brightness-ubuntu-1310/
Right-click > "Open image in new tab" to see image at full size.
Sensors
also seems to be mentioned in other posts so I typed it into the command and this was the output:
me@computer ~ $ sensors

I have been getting the errors *Please switch to another Linux Mint mirror* and *Your APT configuration is corrupt* in Update Manager for the past week. I restored the default settings, so the error should not be due to the mirror.
After reading a thread on forums.linuxmint.com about this issue, I ran a deep clean operation using BleachBit as suggested by a couple of users. Does this work?
I tried refreshing Update Manager after the deep clean, but it's taking a long time and displaying *Updating cache: Waiting for mint-refresh-ca to exit*.

Can I type Korean using Linux mint 17.2 Cinnamon using
fcitx
?
I have check several post, which told me that I can use iBus to type Korean. But I am using fcitx
to type other Language like Chinese. If I change my type method to iBus, I cannot type Chinese.
I checked this post , there is a solution that said that I can install following package to type Korean.
* General packages for Cinnamon:
fcitx fcitx-ui-classic fcitx-config-gtk fcitx-frontend-gtk3
* Specific package for Korean:
fcitx-hangul
However after I installed this package, configure fcitx
, logout and login, I cannot add Korean type method to fcitx
.

Officially, upgrading the KDE version of Linux Mint 17.3 to 18 is not supported , because "Linux Mint 18 KDE will use a new and different desktop called Plasma". I presume this means that the KDE4 to KDE5 upgrade process is not trivial. The official way to upgrade is to do a clean reinstall.
I use Linux Mint on my main (scientific computing) workstation, and would much rather not do a clean reinstall: following advice, my
/home/
is not on a separate partition, I have several different (non-physical!) users installed, and the official installers just want to wipe everything and start again. I'd really much rather not.
What I'd like to do is update all of the apt sources to point at the right place, do an apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
and go home for the evening. As it stands at the moment, quite a few things randomly break every time I do an apt-get update
(at the last one, nvidia drivers, cuda, and xfce due to a change in dbus!). I _like_ the look of Plasma, and the live usb of 18.2 runs great on my computer. I _want to upgrade_ *without* wiping _everything_. This is far from an unreasonable request.
I have't heard of anyone else doing this _successfully_ for KDE Mint 17.3, and I'd like to know if it's possible. mintupgrade
certainly thinks not. I'd like to try.
What happens if you just do something stupid, like sed -i 's/trusty/rosa/' /etc/apt/sources.list
?

There may be a simple answer to this, but if there is, I'm not aware of it.
I've downloaded the latest GitHub release of Neovim, because the one in the
apt
repositories is outdated by a few major versions. After following the installation instructions on the GitHub page, the nvim
executable is placed in /opt/nvim-linux-x86_64/bin
. From there, I can simply add it to my PATH in my .bashrc
.
This works fine for terminal use, but what if I got lazy and wanted to open files via the graphical file browser? It works fine with the apt
version, because that is a deb package and everything.
In the "Default Applications" app on Mint I've tried setting the default app for source code and text files as the nvim
executable. It says it works, but when I try to double-click on a text file to open it, it doesn't.
I've tried it numerous times, and I also tried adding the %U
flag to it, to no avail.
So as the title says, how can I set this version of nvim as my default app for text/source files?

Cinnamon Mint 22.1 Xia was preinstalled by Freegeek.org a no-support community non-profit refurbisher.
I installed the latest open source Nvidia video driver and rebooted as it instructed, but now it boots then stops, showing the green LinuxMint logo.

So, I'm using Linux Mint 21.3 with MATE 1.26.0. I've noticed that my system supports a number of nonstandard flag emoji. I'm wondering what part of the system is responsible for this, if this is documented anywhere, and where the files or source for this can be found.
Since I'm guessing not everyone is familiar: In addition to its mechanism for national flags, Unicode also has a mechanism for flags of subnational entities. However, this mechanism is mostly unused, with only the flags of England, Scotland, and Wales being officially supported according to the standard (the reason being, as I understand it, that the Unicode Consortium quickly realized that this would get completely out of hand if they allowed it to go any further).
I've noticed that my computer actually supports a number of nonstandard subnational flags: American states and DC; Canadian provinces and territories; Mexican states and its federal district; and Northern Ireland (which officially doesn't even have a flag, but one is displayed regardless). Maybe there's more, but other subnational entities I thought to try (such as American territories or Australian states) didn't work.
As an example, if your computer is like mine, this will display the flag of Delaware: 🏴 (my apologies to the Unicode Consortium for including a nonstandard emoji in general interchange! :P )
You might be wondering, why would I even think to try this, given that certainly I've never seen such nonstandard emoji in the wild, and had to assemble them myself out of the necessary non-printable code points (I mean with a script obviously, not by hand!), after inferring what those would be? The answer is that I got curious about the possibility after seeing [this MIT Mystery Hunt puzzle](https://puzzles.mit.edu/2024/mythstoryhunt.world/puzzles/crossed-fingers-memo-puzzle) the other year, which includes some US state flags as "emoji". Of course, the emoji in that puzzle are actually images, so there's no requirement for them to be actual emoji on anyone's system, but it got me wondering about the possibility, leading me to try out creating such nonstandard emoji on my own system, and, to my surprise, it worked. (I wonder if the writers of that puzzle were aware of this? Just realizing I didn't think to try contacting them... oh well.)
(Edit: Actually, maybe I have seen this in the wild on one occasion? I forget, my memory's a bit fuzzy here. It's not important to the question anyway.)
Anyway yeah this has been bugging me and I'm wondering if anyone knows what is responsible for this and where I could find more info. Thanks all!

The computer in question is one that I've set up for my mother-in-law, but I can remotely access it anytime via TeamViewer. She is only using it for browsing web via Chrome, and so far it's worked great, but lately she's complained that some websites are displaying visual artifacts. More details:
* It runs Linux Mint, latest version with automatic updates.
* It's an older machine - Phenom II X2 550 CPU, 6GB of RAM, Radeon 6450 GPU (passively cooled), Samsung 860 Evo SSD. Still powerful enough for web browsing.
* The glitches usually are either black blocks or gray/blank areas. Kind of reminds me of GPU memory corruption, however the symptoms don't quite match.
* They are reliably reproducible in the same webpages in the same places. Other webpages don't have them.
* It's not a monitor glitch - I can see them over through TeamViewer.
* Rebooting does not help.
* Enabling experimental Vulcan support in Chrome has helped a lot, but some places still have them.
* Running a few online 3D WebGL benchmarks don't exhibit any corruption
* Firefox seems to run fine, but she's used to Chrome, so I'd rather not change that.
* The glitches don't seem to line up with any HTML elements
* The glitches scroll with the webpage
* The desktop environment itself as well as other apps (that I tried at least) don't exhibit any corruption, HOWEVER:
* When I tried viewing her computer over TeamViewer today, I noticed that my connection seems to freeze at times. At one point I even had to reconnect. I wanted to chalk that down to flaky internet (although we both have broadband cable), but then she told me that the freezes were happening on her side as well - so it wasn't the internet that was freezing, but rather her whole PC. I tried looking for evidence in logfiles, but all I could find was a hang and a core dump of
systemd-udevd
which might have lined up with the biggest freeze. Not much else to go on, but I also don't know where to look.
* She also complained that lately some of the little arcade games that she likes to play on the web (solitaire, mahjong, breakout-clones, etc) have become much slower - albeit no glitches.
I can't make up my mind if this feels more like a software bug or a hardware bug. Hardware bugs are usually more all-encompassing than just a single app in specific places. But visually it resembles hardware bugs and systemd-udevd
is related to hardware...
**Any ideas what could be the problem, or where I should look for more evidence?**
Unfortunately I don't have any screenshots, but here's an interesting cellphone photo she sent me. Note in particular the cloud icons that overlap the glitches. I later connected to her computer (after it had been rebooted) and reproduced this view EXACTLY (which is another strike against hardware bugs - they're usually more random). This particular glitch went away after enabling the Vulcan support, but later she discovered other webpages that still have these glitches.

OK I installed LinuxMint 22.3 here as a dual boot. My Windows works with the mediatek but I have no idea how to add the Linux 6.6.12 kernel series. Any simple answers for a newbie?

I've found a number of posts across forums and on archwiki that reference the following solution for this laptop model
echo 1 > /sys/bus/platform/drivers/ideapad_acpi/VPC2004\:00/conservation_mode
This should essentially activate conservation mode for the machine (note: From what I can find the Legion7i classes itself as an ideapad, rather than a thinkpad)
**My issue:** I can not get the file to shift from 0 to 1.
**Tried:**
The above command as su in terminal AND changing permissions to ensure rw access, and editing via text editor. In every instance when I check the output from the file, its 0.
**Note:** I dual boot win10. For a time, when setting battery conservation mode on in win10, it would hold for when I booted in to linux. Now, regardless of what OS I boot into, the system seems to revert back to conservation mode off every time. Ive found no relevant settings to battery power/management in the BIOS (ver 4.05).
Im no advanced user, so any info would be great. even if the answer is "cant be done, your machine wont allow it", thanks!

I cannot install MongoDB on my Linux Mint.
Operating System: Linux Mint 19.1
Kernel: Linux 4.15.0-50-generic
Architecture: x86-64
I followed official documentation.
Import the public key used by the package management system
$ wget -qO - https://www.mongodb.org/static/pgp/server-4.0.asc | sudo apt-key add -
Create a list file for MongoDB Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic)
$ echo "deb [ arch=amd64 ] https://repo.mongodb.org/apt/ubuntu bionic/mongodb-org/4.0 multiverse" |
sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mongodb-org-4.0.list
Reload local package
$ sudo apt-get update
Install the MongoDB package
$ sudo apt-get install -y mongodb-org
While installing got these errors:
Reading package lists... Done

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
icoutils libboost-program-options1.65.1 libgoogle-perftools4 libpcrecpp0v5
libtcmalloc-minimal4 libwine-development libwxgtk3.0-gtk3-0v5
libyaml-cpp0.5v5 mongodb-server-core python-wxgtk3.0 python-wxversion
wine64-development
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
The following additional packages will be installed:
mongodb-org-mongos mongodb-org-server mongodb-org-shell mongodb-org-tools
The following NEW packages will be installed:
mongodb-org mongodb-org-mongos mongodb-org-server mongodb-org-shell

You might want to run 'apt --fix-broken install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
mongodb-org : Depends: mongodb-org-server but it is not going to be installed
Depends: mongodb-org-mongos but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt --fix-broken install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
