Some Files in /usr/share/applications/ Not Displaying Icons in Thunar

**Debian Buster; Xfce version 4.12; Thunar version 1.8.4** In my /usr/share/applications/ directory (using **Thunar**), there are three .desktop file listings that do not display the correct icon. It is interesting to note that said three .desktop files are the only ones in said directory that stipulate the icon file in the below fashion (what follows are copies of each subject .desktop file's Icon=... line): Icon=ca.desrt.dconf-editor Icon=org.gnome.Evince Icon=org.gnome.Yelp It is also interesting to note that the correct icons appear in the **Xfce** whisker menu. For each of these three cases, I am able to find multiple instances of the proper icons in (and only in) the /usr/share/icons/hicolor directory. In addition, all of the non-affected .desktop files in said /usr/share/applications/ directory specify specific icon paths or a generic icon name (e.g. Icon=xfwm4). I have updated the relevant icon cache (using, as root, gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/hicolor/) with no joy. I'm currently using the **Tango** icon theme in **Xfce** and do not wish to change that setting. I realize that, as a workaround, I could simply specify a path to the desired icon in each of the three subject .desktop files, but am curious as to what the problem could be?

I am running Arch Linux and have Xfce4 installed along with Chromium. I want to make Chromium my default web browser, but unless I pass the option --user-data-dir=/home/chris, it doesn't start because I am the root user. I have tried going to Applications->Settings->Preferred Applications in Xfce and setting the web browser to /usr/bin/chromium "%s" --user-data-dir=/home/chris (I have also switched "%s" and the option). However, when I click on the web browser icon in the bottom panel, I get the normal Chromium error (can't run as root) and another error Failed to Execute default Web Browser - Input/Output Error So, my question is how can I make Chromium the default web browser and pass the required argument every time it is started?

In my current (Fedora 37) XFCE setup, I have sticky keys and all other accessibility features disabled. However Stickey keys are still on, and my Alt-Gr key randomly becomes stuck when I need to enter a couple special characters in a row. I have two problems: I don't know how to "un-stick" that stuck key, other than switching to another keyboard layout with ibus. Even though I have all sticky-key features disabled, they still appear to be enabled, even though xbset q shows them as off.
Accessibility Features (AccessX) = Off
Sticky-Keys = Off
Is there a way how I can permanently, once and for all, disable accessibility features, as in perhaps uninstall a library, etc?

I want a button in XFCE to show me open windows (minimized and maximized) like * *Exposé* (later *Mission Control*) on macOS * *Activities* in GNOME or * *Task View* in Windows 10. I found some tools like *Xfdashboard* and *Skippy-xd*, but they need compiling from source and I get errors from compiling them, and I am new to Linux. Now I use the *compiz* scale. It is good actually, but it only shows maximized windows. It doesn't show minimized windows and the shift switcher compiz has two modes, "cover" and "flip". Both of them aren't my interests. I want them to show like a grid. Finally, I want to say the Activities button is needed for fast switching windows and productivity. My Linux is MX Linux 21_x64 wildflower Xfce-desktop. I have only 4GB of RAM, Gnome and Ubuntu use too much memory. That's why I use Xfce and this is what I want a button to open running applications like these: enter image description here enter image description here

Does Clipman support this? I am aware of super + v. That is not what I'm asking for. I want to effortlessly paste the previous item. I have not found anything in the documentation to suggest that this is supported.

DP-3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
Is this normal? If not, what can I do to remove this imaginary monitor? Restarting the laptop (with no external monitors connected at any point) doesn't change anything. (My guess it that something about this is causing a weird display problem I have - my login screen starts at the wrong resolution, and afterward the resolution gets corrected but the virtual desktop sizes are wrong.) Here are related Xorg.0.log lines - DP-1 (the imaginary monitor) does not have an EDID, but it is listed as connected with initial mode 1024x768, and also seems to somehow cause eDP-1 (the actual laptop monitor) to use initial mode 1024x768 instead of 1920x1080; then it gets classified as a keyboard for some reason:

Debian Jessie, Xfce4 ver. 4.10, HPLIP ver. 3.14.6 **UPDATE:** This issue is still present as of Debian Buster... After upgrading from Debian Wheezy to Jessie (yeah, I know...), started getting the following (level 1/alert) notice in the boot logs: hp-systray[PID]: error: option -s not recognized Closer scrutiny of the subject log entry revealed that the command /usr/bin/python /usr/bin/hp-systray -session .... had been attempted at some point during the login process. Running said command in a terminal does indeed produce the subject error squawk. Turns out that -session is not a valid switch for this command... Never saw said notice when running Wheezy. Internet research yielded the observation that this problem seems to be relatively rare, seemingly innocuous, has been around for at least 10 years, and has never been explained. I have noticed that, if I kill the hp-systray process before shutdown, the problem is not there upon the subsequent boot, but will return for any follow-on boot not preceded by said "kill" operation. Any ideas?

While trying to use Nautilus as primary file manager for Xfce I noticed that it seems impossible to reach the preferences menu in Xfce. On a normal Ubuntu installation with GNOME or similar it is reachable by using the menu in the top bar under the File section. The problem is that Xfce and KDE don't have such a bar, and it seems that the application menu is not showing anywhere. Is this normal, and is there a way to get around this (with the same keyboard shortcut or another)? It works as it is, but it's not configurable at all.

I've been using XFCE for about a week now; I finally gave up on KDE on my desktop because of too many problems with the set-up there (switching between multiple users with multiple X servers running different WM/DE combinations, three monitors and two videocards; it is this last part which seems to have hamstrung KDE when switching users/X instances). Anyway, XFCE has proven to be very stable in that context, and has gotten me into using XDG files for panel menus, which seem to be very straightforward; I have a menu file that looks like this: GoldilocksDE /home/goldilocks/xdg/applications Goldilocks-favourites Then everytime I want to add an app to that list, I just stick its desktop file in /home/goldilocks/xdg/applications and it is added to the menu without having to reload, restart, or do anything further. Very nice. For the most part, I've just been copying these in from /usr/share/applications, and adding Goldilocks-favourites to Categories. There's still the default panel menu with a bunch of submenus that contains everything and I'm not bothering with editing that or using xdg-desktop-menu; the customized menu above is just for the half dozen or so things I use most often. I'm using a custom path instead of ~/.local/share/applications since the system/installers/the package manager uses that. I've copied entries out of there too. But now I am confused. I tried to copy in an entry for okular; there's two on the system I could find, one left behind in /usr/share/appplications/kde4 (actually there's a bunch of okularApplication_foo.desktop ones in there that seem to be about different mime types), and one in ~/.local/share/applications. Neither of them work when copied into the custom /home/goldilocks/xdg/applications. I also took one for an application which does work and just replaced a few values appropriately. [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Name=Okular Comment=Document viewer Exec=okular Icon=okular Type=Application Terminal=false Categories=Goldilocks-favourites X-Desktop-File-Install-Version=0.22 No dice. It is just not in the menu. XFCE does not seem to log errors or anything anywhere AFAICT (there's nothing in /var/log/syslog, and I get a copy of anything using syslog dumped there; journald runs mostly castrated and never shows anything additional to that). So I've been looking at the man pages found with apropos xdg, there's not much there, and [this freedesktop page](https://specifications.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ar01s02.html) makes the format sound as simple and open as I think it is, with the exception of *"the 'reverse DNS' convention e.g. org.example.FooViewer.desktop"* which **none** of the desktop files on the system have followed anyway. I also can't seem to find the Okular.desktop file that the big default menu (/etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu) uses despite having read this and noted the contents of env | grep XDG. It doesn't seem to be one of the the files mentioned above, since if I tweak them (e.g., change the icon) it doesn't affect the menu. Does anyone understand what the issue is here?

            <Merge type="menus" />
            <Filename>geda-gattrib.desktop</Filename>
            <Merge type="files" />
        </Layout>
    </Menu>
and Electronics down in the file (with other similar entries). 2. Then, I added Electronics to ~/.config/menus/applications.menu along with similar entries. 3. Last, I made a new file named ~/.local/share/desktop-directories/xfce-electronics.directory and added wrote the following to it:
    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Directory
    Icon=file-manager
    Name=Electronics
    Comment=
However, I am not seeing a new category in either Whisker Menu or Alacarte or Menulibre (menu editors). Is there something else to be done that I missed?

Also, I am working on Xubuntu.

I recently switched over to Xfce and really enjoy it. However, when I went in to my settings to change the appearance, the theme that I liked best was "Xfce-dusk" with one exception: The default colors for application tabs are so dark that it's hard to tell where they are. I hunted around for a little while looking anywhere I could to see where the styles for the tabs are set in the theme configuration file and couldn't find anything that looked like it would do what I need. The file I've found to define the theme was: /usr/share/themes/Xfce-dusl/gtk-2.0/gtkrc But looking through that file, I can't find anything that seems to apply. Any suggestions? Normally I'm a command-line only sort of guy and don't really know much about WMs or theming, and don't even know the terms of what I'm trying to modify, so my Google searches are coming up painfully empty. Here is a screenshot of the type of tabs I want to modifya screenshot of the type of tabs I want to modify.

This is per instructions on https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/LightDM and https://github.com/prikhi/lightdm-mini-greeter . However, looking at the logs in /var/log/lightdm from when the system boots: [+0.00s] DEBUG: Loading configuration from /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf [+0.00s] DEBUG: [LightDM] contains unknown option greeter-session ... [+1.45s] DEBUG: Session pid=599: Running command /usr/bin/lightdm-gtk-greeter I am then greeted by the default gtk greeter. If you can share any idea what I may be doing wrong, or what else I should configure?
