[Fedora KDE]
Assume I have two virtual desktops (or activities, the issue appears there too).
I have two windows open on desktop 1 - one snapped to the left edge and one to the right edge. Similarly on desktop 2 - one window snapped left, one window snapped right. That is, I have four windows, each covering half the monitor.
On desktop 1, I grab the divider between the windows and change the size of the windows. For example, let's make the left window cover 3/4 of the total desktop.
Now, what bugs me is that the sizes of the windows on desktop 2 changes as well. I don't know where in the settings to stop this behavior, and I suspect there may not be an easy setting, *because* is identical for virtual desktops and for plasma activities, so it seems to me that the problem is fairly deep. But: I don't know. Perhaps there is a way of correcting this - so my question is, if that can be corrected, how would I do that?
Searching only gave me various forms of "here's how to enable snapping in kwin" or several year old "check out my script for enabling window snapping in kwin". I haven't installed (I don't think?) any such script so I suspect I've been using something that's now built-in but I haven't figured out where to find the documentation of that particular functionality.
Thanks!

Recently, i tried to organize my computer using KDE's virtual desktops, so windows that i open on my gaming desktop do not disturb me when i'm on my working desktop.
But there is a problem with firefox (that i use as a navigator), which **always opens url request in most recently active window**.
For example, when i have one firefox window in Desktop 1, one other window in Desktop 2, if i select Desktop 1's firefox window, i switch to Desktop 2 *without selecting its firefox window* and i open a link in another application, the tab will open to Desktop 1's window and will switch me to Desktop 1.
What i would like is that when i click on a link while on Desktop k:
- If no firefox window is in Desktop k, open one with the url
- If there is one (or more) windows in Desktop k, open the url on the most recently active firefox window **from Desktop k**.
Is there a way to achieve this. I've looked up forums and found that i should edit firefox's option
widget.disable-workspace-management
to true, but it does not seem to change anything. Also, the problem seems similar to what can be found in this question , but i am not using i3 and my problem is more specific.
I am looking for either a parameter *inside* firefox, or for a config file to edit to program the specific behaviour i described (but i have no idea which file i could edit).
PS: My computer is running Debian 11 (bullseye) with KDE 5.78.0 with firefox 102.10.0esr

I have KDE5 Plasma with one virtual desktop. I tried to show a desktop pager in panel for one virtual desktop, but without success — by default, the pager will only display when there is more than one virtual desktop.
In KDE4, I could change the script at
/usr/share/kde4/apps/plasma/packages/org.kde.pager/contents/ui/main.qml
to always show the widget by commenting this line:
visible: repeater.count > 1
But in KDE5, the script is different and I don't know how to change it to show the widget when there is only one virtual desktop. The new location of the script is /usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.pager/contents/ui/main.qml
.
Does anyone know how to implement this?

Add VIRTUAL output to Xorg

I want to create a dummy, virtual output on my Xorg server on current Intel iGPU (on Ubuntu 16.04.2 HWE, with Xorg server version 1.18.4). It is the similiar to Linux Mint 18.2, which one of the
xrandr
output shows the following:
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767
...
eDP1 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
...
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
...
In the Linux Mint 18.2, I can turn off the built-in display (eDP1
) and turn on the VIRTUAL1
display with any arbitrary mode supported by the X server, attach x11vnc
to my main display and I'll get a GPU accelerated remote desktop.
But in Ubuntu 16.04.2, that's not the case. The VIRTUAL*
display doesn't exist at all from xrandr
. Also, FYI, xrandr's output names is a little bit different on Ubuntu 16.04.2, where every number is prefixed with a -
. E.g. eDP1
in Linux Mint becomes eDP-1
in Ubuntu, HDMI1
becomes HDMI-1
, and so on.
So, how to add the virtual output in Xorg/xrandr?
And how come Linux Mint 18.2 and Ubuntu 16.04.2 (which I believe uses the exact same Xorg server, since LM 18.2 is based on Ubuntu, right?) can have a very different xrandr configurations?
Using xserver-xorg-video-dummy
is not an option, because the virtual output won't be accelerated by GPU.

On programs that run in "fullscreen" mode, when I change the "fullscreen" resolution to something that is lower than what my desktop resolution is, I can scroll past the edges of the program by moving my mouse to the edge of the screen and see my desktop. This is really buggy and actually crashed my system, on top of being incredibly annoying.
How do you disable this? I don't even know what it is called, and I can't find ANYTHING except for this, really, unanswered question from 2003: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/disabling-virtual-screen-mouse-scrolling-in-x-111237/
If anybody wants to see an example, then you can probably do it yourself by installing SuperTux 2, changing the fullscreen resolution to something like 640x480, then checking the fullscreen box, and moving your mouse to the edge of the screen.

# What do I mean by "detached"?
In the herbstluftwm windows manager (and others, notably xmonad), the concept of a "virtual desktop" is removed from the physical monitors themselves. That means that any one monitor can be viewing any of the virtual desktops at a time.
As an example, let's say we had three screens:
[SCREEN 1] | [SCREEN 2] | [SCREEN 3]
and 3 VIRTUAL desktops (in reality it's 9).
[VIRTUAL 1] | [VIRTUAL 2] | [VIRTUAL 3]
Now, imagine I have virtual desktop 1 on screen 1, virtual desktop 2 on screen 2, and virtual desktop 3 on screen 3. I want to be able to change the view to:
[VIRTUAL 2] | [VIRTUAL 1] | [VIRTUAL 3]
without dragging or moving windows in any way.
herbstluftwm's rules are:
* If you switch to a VIRTUAL desktop not already on another physical screen, it replaces the focused monitor's VIRTUAL desktop with the one you want.
* If you switch to a VIRTUAL desktop that another screen is currently viewing, it will swap virtual desktops with that screen.
* The focus determines which monitor gets its VIRTUAL desktop changed. If you have focus on screen 2 and switch to virtual desktop 8, screen 2 views VIRTUAL desktop 8.
# What do other window managers do?
The only other environments I have extensive experience with are Gnome and KDE. In both cases, **each virtual desktop is really a set of N screens**.
So, with 3 screens and 3 VIRTUAL desktops, there are actually 9 "working areas".
If I switch to VIRTUAL desktop 2 while the second monitor is focused, all three screens will change since screens are "bound" to the virtual desktop. There is no separation of screen and desktop.
# What I'm asking
First of all, is there a name for this type of functionality? I cannot work without it, and if herbstluftwm never supports Wayland then I'll be stuck on X indefinitely to get this feature.
Second, which window managers support this? Are there hacks / workarounds where KDE or Gnome can behave like this?

**Background**
I have been using Linux Mint KDE v17.3 (Plasma v4.13.2) for a number of years. I keep Firefox open in one virtual desktop and Thunderbird open in another. If I receive an email in Thunderbird containing a link and click on the link, the link opens in Firefox and Plasma automatically switches desktops to view it.
**Symptom**
I just installed Kubuntu 18.04 with Plasma 5.12.7. It behaves differently, and it looks like recent Plasma versions on other distros are similar.
- With the same virtual desktop setup, clicking a link in Thunderbird opens the link in Firefox but does not switch desktops. The Task Manager icon changes color to indicate the activity on the other desktop, but you need to manually switch desktops to view it.
- If Firefox is not already open, clicking the link in Thunderbird will launch Firefox (or a different browser if selected), in the same desktop as Thunderbird and switch focus to the browser. Similarly, if the browser is already open in the same desktop, focus will switch to it.
The only difference in behavior is that Plasma will no longer switch desktops if needed to make the browser visible.
**Additional testing**
- I've tested the behavior on two computers and a number of other distros using recent versions of Plasma (Mint 19 with the Kubuntu's Plasma 5.12.7 desktop, Neptune [KDE 5.12.7 on Debian], openSUSE v42.3 w/Plasma 5.8.7, Manjaro w/Plasma 5.15.0). They all behave the same way as Kubuntu. I also tested it in a live session of KDE Neon v5.12.4 and that behaved the same way.
- I've also tested this with sources of links other than Thunderbird and with other browsers and the behavior is the same.
- The style of desktop arrangement (grid, cube, etc.), and type of switching animation have no effect on the symptom.
So the source appears to be recent versions of Plasma. It isn't clear whether this is new intended behavior for Plasma or a bug. I couldn't find any references to this behavior in online searches.
Is there a way to restore the previous behavior of automatically switching desktops?

Something like:

or open-in-screen 2 firefox
.
If it matters, my environment is KDE using the KWin window manager. KWin window rules can only match some properties like title, but I could not find an environment variable as filter.

I'm using Arch Linux / Fluxbox, and have 6 basic virtual desktops setup inside
Fluxbox.
Currently my screen layout config is quite the default, the 2 monitors just
form a larger desktop, where the mouse can navigate transparently.
I just run `$ xrandr --output VGA-0 --auto --output DVI-0 --auto --right-of
VGA-0` to swap the ordering of screens.
###Question
Is it possible, instead of a large virtual desktop covered by the 2 monitors, to
switch independently to a different virtual desktop in each monitor?
For example, "Monitor A" would display the virtual desktop 1, while "Monitor B"
would display the virtual desktop 3.
I'm looking for CLI solutions, compatible with Fluxbox.

I am using a VDI called Exceed-on-Demand (EoD) This thin client is able to resize the X desktop depending on the size of the monitor at the time you start the client. However, you cannot resize the desktop afterwards. I know that the RANDR extension is present and when I type xrandr this is what I get:
my-machine:~% xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 3840 x 1137, current 3840 x 1137, maximum 3840 x 1137
screen connected 3840x1137+0+0 975mm x 288mm
3840x1137 0.0*
I have tried adding in new modes as described in https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/320300/adding-new-resolution-in-multi-monitor-setup-via-xrandr
But that does not work; xrandr returns an error.
Notice that the minimum and maximum screen resolution are the SAME. I believe this is my problem. Does anyone know how to tell EoD to use a different screen size or how to change the minimum and maximum screen size for xrandr?

I'm trying to set up a CentOS 6 system with KDE. I have an older system that use gnome that I'm happy with, and I'm trying to make the KDE system behave as much like the gnome one as possible.
The current issue is the pager. On Gnome, I have two pager widgets. one has the full 4x4 view of all of my virtual desktops with just silhouettes of the windows. The other just shows the current desktop, and just shows the name.
If I try this in KDE, all pager widgets appear to have the same settings.
All I really want is a full 4x4 pager widget, and another widget that just has the name of the current desktop. How do I do this?
I'm not sure what version of KDE I have, I tried looking it up, but nothing seemed to say...
