When changing the hostname in the icewm-session, the application startup breaks down. Such errors are written in the logs
.xsession-errors
when launching applications:
Authorization required, but no authorization protocol specified
xterm: Xt error: Can't open display: :0
When i start the distribution (native build), xdm
starts. After logging in to xdm
, the script .xsession
is run from the user's home directory, which contains:
#!/bin/bash
icewm-session -s
Next, the icewm session starts.
If I log in again, then everything works fine. But as soon as I change the hostname, it becomes impossible to launch applications, although there are no problems in the icewm session.
I created a issue for the problem, but it was rejected. Do I need to configure something additionally?

What could be the problem?
I have already tried various solutions to the problems. The
UPD2:
Another setting option. It feels like
xfontsel
defines the font. As you can see in the screenshot, the Cyrillic alphabet is displayed correctly (the last line)

man iso_8859-5
it tells me under which code I can get one or another character of my encoding

Xresources
configuration file I am specifying the sequence of the Cyrillic alphabet:
...
Xlogin*titleMessage: \260\261\262\263\264\265\266
xlogin*greeting: \260\261\262\263\264\265\266
xlogin*namePrompt: Username:\040
xlogin*passwdPrompt: Password:\040
xlogin*fail: Authentication failed
...
xlogin*greetFont: -*-ubuntu nerd font-*-r-normal-*-17-120-100-100-*-*-iso8859-5
xlogin*font: -*-ubuntu nerd font-*-r-normal-*-17-120-100-100-*-*-iso8859-5

xlogin*greetFace: Ubuntu Nerd Font-14:bold
xlogin*face: Ubuntu Nerd Font-10
xlogin*promptFace: Ubuntu Nerd Font-12:bold
xlogin*failFace: Ubuntu Nerd Font-10:bold
But when starting xdm
, I get the wrong characters that I specified in the configuration file.

locale
is set in the required encoding. The Xresources
file is also in UTF-8 format. I've already tried everything. But as a result, when I output the text, I get a two-byte representation of each Cyrillic character. It feels like xdm
doesn't understand UTF-8.
UPD1:
Unicode is not output
Xlogin*titleMessage: Добро пожаловать
xlogin*greeting: Добро пожаловать

xdm
doesn't see the specified font:

I'm trying to install a Fedora 30 system from the ground up. I want to use i3 as my Window Manager and xdm as my login manager.
I can start an X server manually with
startx
, which starts i3. I then tried to start xdm on boot by doing sudo systemctl enable xdm
, but xdm does not start on boot, I only get a non-graphic login. If I start xdm manually, it works, but it does not start the window manager but returns to the login screen, even after a successfull login.
When I look in the journal, I find the following lines
PAM unable to dlopen(/usr/lib64/security/pam_gnome_keyring.so): /usr/lib64/security/pam_gnome_keyring.so: cannot open shared file: No such file or direcory
PAM adding faulty module: /usr/lib64/security/pam_gnome_keyring.so
I set up an .xsession
. Please ask in the comments for more details (logs, config,...), I'm not sure weather something is helpful here or not.

I have a fresh install of FreeBSD 13 on a computer. I have i3-gaps as WM and rxvt-unicode as my ONLY installed terminal. I have followed the docs and enabled XDM login in ttys as per the docs . I have also tried following the FreeBSD forum where someone had an identical issue and solved it by
echo "kern.vty=vt" >> /boot/loader.conf
I have tried enabling dbus, hald and xdm in rc.conf but that does not change anything. I do not have network access inside single mode, but could gain it by uninstall XDM if really necessary.
No errors in xserver or any other logs anywhere inside xdm folder or ~.
I have a minimal .Xsession with only i3
in it, since I do not need to start anything else. Changing this to anything else, such as exec i3
, changes nothing about the error.
I cannot go to another console using ALT + CONTROL + F1
/F2, etc since the keyboard is completely disabled. I did not have this issue with sddm and slim in my previous two FreeBSD installs on this computer.

Indeed, XDM starts and prompt a thing I guess is the default login screen, but when I enter my password/username, it fades for a bit then pops again, despite the IDs being the right ones, and thus I can't access my session or anything. Is there any way to bypass XDM, involving not to chroot in the install via a bootable USB ?
Thanks

The part I cannot solve is that, after xserver connects to 177/udp of xdm, xdm connects back to xserver, say 6001/tcp. So the server network does not know how to connect to the IP inside another NAT.
The NAT routers are not rich functioned (as to routing), just exposes any ports necessary. For example, I exposed 22/tcp and 177/udp from Server.
I tried xqproxy, xdm just rejects the session id.

But XDM has to start a X process and show something, if there is some hardware issues, it tails to start. While in my opinion, XDMCP server is pure CPU task.
So, is it possible to provide XDMCP service without using video card or screen? Just like running Nginx in background?
When I tried it in my case, the X process started by XDM died due to "no screens found". I do not want to pay attention on fixing that since local monitor means nothing to me.
I followed https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/XDMCP to do the modification. And xdm.log says:

I was worried that my computer could be compromised and my login session is being hijacked by some malicious hook.
In
.xsession
executed by xdm
, I capture a pstree
snapshot a file to debug this situation.
This file's timestamp shows five to fifteen second delay after X11 login!
.xsession-errors
doesn't show anything weird, only that I'm being added to "access control list" and then a couple of environment entries reported by dbus-update-activation-environment
with no timestamps.
dmesg
during this weird pause:
r8168: eth0: link up
IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready
random: crng init done
random: 7 urandom warning(s) missed due to ratelimiting

Initializing XFRM netlink socket
IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): docker0: link is not ready
IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): br-f14696ee8bfd: link is not ready
Regardless of the root cause (I suspect something demands more randomness after boot), how such problems can be debugged further?
Can I leverage systemd
for example?

I would like to screenshot my XDM login screen on FreeBSD-CURRENT. It’s currently configured on ttyv8.
# What I’ve tried:
I have tried
xwd
with various options from ttyv1, but it reports is cannot open the display.
I’ve had a crack at configuring xdmcp to screenshot from my Mac via X11 forwarding, but the background does not appear.
The background is presented using qiv
and is configured in Xsetup_*n*.
Having initially SSH’d onto the FreeBSD laptop with X forwarding enabled, the value of my DISPLAY variable was :10.0. I created an Xsetup_10 file (a straight copy from the Xsetup_0 file that works fine locally) and added the following line to /usr/local/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-config
DisplayManager._10.setup: /usr/local/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup_10
But this still didn’t work.
# Question:
How can I screenshot my XDM login screen?

I ditched gnome by ditching gdm in my Debian install and replaced it with xdm and fluxbox. The problem that now occurs is that logging in to fluxbox doesn't work. I type my username and password, press enter, the screen blanks out and I get back to the xdm login stage again.
I traced this behaviour to existence of
source
, or .
statements in the .xsession (.xsessionrc) files. This makes it impossible to source .profile
when using the graphical login.
Can someone more knowledgeable about the contemporary login process of Debian elaborate on what is the best place to customise the environment in, or where to source .profile
?

In one of the steps it suggests:

Starting Debian without X
I am trying to start Debian without X, so I set `/etc/x11/default-display-manager` empty. It works, but i get a random:nonblocking pool is initialized message. Is there a better way to do it? Why I'm getting that message? I'm using xdm.

while the others use gdm
.
On my desktop and laptop, my highlighting works correctly, as seen here:

man

However, on the netbook, this is what I am getting:
