Has Google Maps stopped displaying proper geodesics?

In these two images, I measure the distance Washington D.C., the US–Kyiv, Ukraine. As clearly seen, Google Maps on the Android phone does not show a correct geodesic. For example, the true geodesic goes north of the British Isles and cuts through northern Scania, Sweden. The Google Maps “geodesic” cuts through France, southern Germany and southern Poland.
Obviously this is not a true geodesic on a spherical Earth.
However, the distance seems to be correct (~7800 km). This implies the distance calculation is using the correct formulas. Is there an option in the Google Maps Android app that lets me see proper geodesics again?
