MX Linux: Network service not running after update unless booted with systemd

I did sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade, and installed the rpi-installer. And after that, I lost all network connectivity. After that, it seemed like my network had been disabled. No access to the internet or local file shares. The networking service is not running. At the boot screen, when I see advanced options, if I select the "...(systemd)" option, I have network again. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this so I don't need to go into the advanced options?

I'm running MX Linux and Windows on the same machine. I'm using an LCD television screen connected via HDMI to the graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER). **My problem:** - On Windows, I can select resolutions way higher than 1024x768 (i.e. 1920x1080 and above). - However, on MX Linux, 1024x768 is the highest resolution (800x600 and 640x480 are also selectable). - Display settings in MX Linux only show one screen labelled "default". **I tried:** - using xrandr as described here . - "xrandr --newmode (...)" gives the error(/warning?): "Failed to get size of gamma for output default". - "xrandr --addmode default "1920x1080_60.00"" also gives "Failed to get size of gamma for output default". - "xrandr --output default --mode "1920x1080_60.00"" gives the **additional** message: "Configure crtc 0 failed". - no change in display happened after that. - using arandr (GUI) *after* typing the above commands: - "default" is shown as screen - right-click --> resolution: shows the 3 resolutions mentioned above, *and also* "1920x108060.00" - selecting "1920x108060.00" and hitting the check sign --> pop-up error message: "(...) error code 1: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default" and "xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed". - no change in display happened after that. I would appreciate any help. It is kind of inconvient having to work with this low (and stretched!) resolution on a 42'' LCD TV screen ;)

i have followed posts on Network Manager looping to connect to enterprise networks and coming back again and again asking for logon/password. the answer seems to be to use wpa_supplicant. i did a log file extract to confirm the process and got ...supplicant interface state: disconnected -> interface_disabled... there is a directory at /etc/wpa_supplicant, but there is no wpa_supplicant config file. the only files listed are action_wpa.sh functions.sh ifupdown.sh i guess that there are a few things i need to do? some perspective here: i am just trying to learn python, using an excellent on-line course from 'degreed' at work and doing the exercises on an old 32bit laptop running mx-linux and a compatible 32bit version of PyCharm Community Edition. my knowledge of network stuff can't fill the bottom of a thimble. so feel free to assume i haven't found the beginning of the string on this issue with logging in. any suggestions at starting points would be appreciated. thanks, ron ron@9-LPTOP:~ $ sudo journalctl -fu NetworkManager [sudo] password for ron: -- Journal begins at Tue 2023-01-24 14:43:06 EST. -- Jan 24 14:55:54 9-LPTOP NetworkManager: [1674590154.0956] device (wlan0): supplicant interface state: disconnected -> interface_disabled Jan 24 14:55:54 9-LPTOP NetworkManager: [1674590154.0957] modem-manager: ModemManager no longer available Jan 24 14:55:54 9-LPTOP NetworkManager: [1674590154.1027] device (wlan0): supplicant interface state: interface_disabled -> disconnected Jan 24 14:55:54 9-LPTOP systemd: Stopping Network Manager... Why would DNS stop working after a while in non-systemd MX Linux?

I am using MX Linux, without systemd. Sometimes after a while, and every time after sleep or hibernation, domain name resolution stops working, that is ping 8.8.8.8 works, but ping google.com does not. I have to reboot **twice** before it can work again, relogin does not help. I also know it is (probably) not hardware related, because I had the same issue on a new notebook and a fresh MX Linux install. I know this is not a support forum, so my question is: what could cause MX Linux to lose the ability to resolve domain names after sleep?

Swapping Ctrl, Win, and Alt in MX Linux (Xfce) – Issue with Alt Modifier

I'm using MX Linux with Xfce and trying to swap three keys: - Ctrl → Win (Super) - Win → Alt - Alt → Ctrl Swapping two keys at a time works using setxkbmap, for example:
setxkbmap -option ctrl:swap_lalt_lctl
However, if I try to add a second swap, like:
setxkbmap -option ctrl:swap_lalt_lctl,altwin:swap_alt_win
I end up with a repetition of the same key instead of a clean three-way swap. ### Attempted Solution I created a custom XKB symbols file:
xkb_symbols "ctrl_win_alt_swap" {
    include "us" // Keep the default US layout
    key  { [ Super_L ] };  // Left Ctrl → Left Win
    key  { [ Alt_L ] };    // Left Win → Left Alt
    key  { [ Control_L ] }; // Left Alt → Left Ctrl
};
I apply this with:
setxkbmap -layout custom -variant ctrl_win_alt_swap
The remapping works, except for one issue: - Pressing **Alt alone** produces Ctrl, which is expected. - Pressing **Alt in combination with another key** results in **Ctrl+Alt**, instead of just Ctrl. Why does this happen, and how can I properly swap Ctrl, Win, and Alt without modifier conflicts?

OS: MX Linux 23.4 Just noticed after the last 2 system update that my screen after going to dormant/suspend can't wake up. I've setup my F7 to turn off the screen, it seems this is not the cause, because if I move my mouse few minutes after turning off the screen by activating F7 key, it works, but if the time is longer (probably between 10-15min, not sure, hasn't timed it), moving the mouse won't turn on the screen (it seems the OS stopped sending signal to monitor, I haven't noticed this behavior before the last 2 updates). The command I'm using for F7 key is xset dpms force off. What am I missing? Is there another way to "wake up" Linux? Currently the only way I found is "hard shut down" (press ON button for few seconds, then the pc shuts down), which I'm pretty sure is not recommended. ps: I've posted this question on MX forum, still waiting for reply.

Mx linux is slow at screen startup
Boot time is 8 sec but I am concerned about screen startup. It takes time to load up desktop or to open applications first time. Like chrome take 1-2 mins to open up and to run normal. I am using duel boot. Linux os is in SSD while the usr is in hhd. Its becoming annoying

I have tried it using the fstab file, the mount command in the terminal, and the file manager's GUI, but without success. The drive may be defective, but I seriously doubt it. I have tried accessing the data partition using an older MX 18.3 system, and it worked fine. I should explain here that, upon booting into MX, the computer refuses to see the drive at all. I have tried adding the partition to the /etc/fstab file, but there is no visible change in the system's behavior. Entering this line into the terminal directly after a reboot:
sudo mount /dev/[PARTITION] /media/[MOUNT-POINT]
...yields this result:
mount: /media/[MOUNT-POINT]: special device /dev/[PARTITION] does not exist.
This holds true whether the partition is in the fstab file or not. The file manager does not see the partition, either. But when I open GParted, a prompt immediately appears asking me to enter the administrative password in order to mount the drive. (Entering the password yields no results.) The partition also appears in the file manager, and the mount command yields a different error:
ntfs-3g-mount: mount failed: Device or resource busy
Please note that this second error ONLY appears after I open GParted, and it occurs even if I choose not to enter the password in the prompt. I also tried creating another smaller ntfs partition on the same drive, but MX treated it just like the other. **System information:** - Main OS: MX 19.4 Patito Feo (64-bit) - Other OS: MX 18.3 Continuum (32-bit) - CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz - Motherboard: ASUSTeK P5KPL-CM - Problem hard drive: WDC WD5003ABYX-18WERA0 - Other hard drive: WDC WD2500AAKX-753CA0 Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you would like any further details, let me know, and I will provide them.

Any ideas, I need support in this case. Which informations do you need from my side to give the right "insmod"-commands? A whole command word for the boot procedure from USB would be nice. Screen_1

What I did after following the above mentioned link is to include this piece of line in the settings.json file after I entered config live server in the search bar "liveServer.settings.AdvanceCustomBrowserCmdLine": "/usr/share/applications/firefox-developer.desktop". However, it is not working out for me. Did I miss anything out here? I know I could add a comment on that thread, but I don't have enough reputations on stackoverflow to comment anything. So I had to post here. I hope anyone can help me with this. Thanks in advance.

I've been updating code on a website that contains calls to googletagmanager.com for a couple of days now, but only just realised that it's wasn't really broken. Turns out my MX Linux desktop simply refuses to connect any requests made to googletagmanager.com... All browsers = fail All plugins = disabled or removed ping googletagmanger.com = success httping https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js?id=AW-866896948 = fail "could not connect (Connection refused)" Tested on 4 other computers = success So it looks like it's something with my computer only because **calls to anyones googletagmanager URL fail, not just ones I maintain** for my own clients. Any ideas what to look at next? I'm running MX-21.3 "Wildflower"

The LCD TV is at 1360x768 (primary) and the built-in monitor is at 1366x768 (right, with some Y-axis shift). I notice that once I open Chrome, it always opens on the built-in monitor. My guess is that the center of the virtual screen is on the built-in monitor because it is slightly wider. However, my Firefox does not have this problem. It seems to remember where it was and opens on my LCD TV automatically. My goal is to make my Chrome open on the LCD TV by default. I wonder if Chrome itself has any setting that allows this. Also, is it possible to change the behavior for any app, so that instead of attempting to open at the center of the virtual screen, open at the top-left corner instead? #### xrandr output

By using the command uname -a, I'm found the kernel version to be

There is also a really [similar question on SuperUser] however it doesn't have an answer yet, and is for Kali linux.
