Realtek 8723be wireless support, PC-BSD
I have an HP 455 Probook with AMD10-7300 processor and Realtek 8723be wireless card. I would like to install PC-BSD. Is there any hope of wireless working? I wish there was a live disk I could use to test before installing.

What are the detailed specific technical/organizational reasons that the PC-BSD team faced that ultimately lead them to scrap PBI and return to ports? Was because of the difficulties compiling and packing? Was because of problems with the hard links they created? Or because of the amount of work to collect dependencies and compile together? I am curious just to know why the same team that create a software (say GNUCash ), take the time and effort to provide a self-contained version for Windows while the *NIX is left as to the compiler/installer. I am not asking about why ports and libraries are good (easy security upgrades,...). I also am not asking about preferences or opinions for packages vs Windows, just the technical reasons that led to scrap PBI. I am asking specifically why the route of PBI (0install, NixOS) is technically not feasible or broadly adopted.

Why can't Korn Shell do ctrl-r?
If I use PC-BSD with the default shell (Korn) then Ctrl + r doesn't work. Why won't it work? Ctrl - r was introduced to search your history in the late 1970s or early 80s and my BSD still can't do it (while Ubuntu can). Ctrl - r originates with Emacs doesn't it? When? 1975? 1983?

I'm toying with the idea of installing FreeBSD or PC-BSD... as it looks now, I'll probably go for PC-BSD. However, one thing I *really* would like, is the FreeBSD ports collection. So I was wondering if it can be installed on PC-BSD? If it can be used with PC-BSD - without *too* much conflict with PC-BSD's own package-installation and package-repository (ie. AppCafe)? (E.g. building and installing some packages from the port-collection, then removing it with PC-BSD's GUI package-manager... Or building and installing a package from the port-collection, and then adding a package that depend on the first one with PC-BSD's GUI package-manager...) And finally *how* I can install it? Can I install the port-collection directly by installing some package (which?) from the PC-BSD repository? Or must I download it separately from FreeBSD (where?) and install it "manually" (how?) in PC-BSD?

The documentation for PC BSD's Warden mentions that the configuration of the right network interface is crucial. However, it doesn't say what the "right" interface is. What interface can I use there? The existing physical NIC one? Should I create a virtual one and use that? The aim is to have network access in the jails, i.e. be able to access the internet as well as access services running within the jail from the internet.

I've tried creating bootable for PCBSD using dd as mentioned on PCBSD website documentation and also in the Preinstall Instruction . I also tried "sync"-ing as mentioned here but it doesn't seem to work. I tried booting my laptop in both legacy and UEFI mode with secure boot disabled. Currently I'm using Kali Linux and when I restart my system with my USB drive plugged in, it simply goes to GRUB menu with Kali to choose. When I type F12 on my dell laptop to enter boot options on startup I do not see my USB drive in my boot options. Any idea? PS : I'm also sure that the image file was properly downloaded because the same image file works fine in virtualbox.

I'm having the same problem as: No sound with Mint 12 and Realtek ALC892. The user marked it as "Resolved" without actually resolving it, he just changed to another OS and gave up. Has anyone resolved this with BSD or Linux? I'm personally more invested with a BSD solution, but a Linux solution would be VERY similar, and would also help. My Mobo has the Realtek 892 sound and ATI Radeon HD-4250 (RS780/RSRS880) Using Kate to edit my config files was a failure. As soon as I sudo to give kate root privileges to edit said config files, my root password changes, locking me out. (3 times in a row with a drive format and fresh install!) The ISO was downloaded directly from PCBSD.org, so I trust it was not tampered with. I had seen someone say 5-6 yrs ago that the sound won't work with HDMI out unless the video driver was installed correctly. That would block sound from exiting the HDMI port, because it was on the video driver. But I have no sound from ANY speaker, including rear analog, or HDMI. BSD properly identifies my sound chip, but I have no sound. It identifies my video as "ATI", but does not specify. I don't want to return to Windows, and would rather use BSD than Linux, and I want sound. So, anyone else ever fixed this successfully?
