crashes. What is the problem?

Well, my problem is very complicated, I've an old machine (Dell Vostro 1000) where I'm using Debian 8 with XFCE. This machine have an integrated video card (ATI MOBILITY RADEON XPRESS 200 - Model: 1150), and it doesn't work with Debian default configuration.
Let's see what I already have tried:
- To turn on my laptop without it shows the notorious colored stripes I need use the "nomodeset" code on grub.cfg.
- The Debian 8 appears don't have the xorg.conf (???), I made a Xorg.conf following the instructions at https://wiki.debian.org/AtiHowTo , without success.
- I tried already tried follow the procedures in the page above, cause the current proprietary driver is not compatible with my old video card. and the older version (legacy) can't be installed and shows some conflicts with "X". This way I have to use the generic linux driver.
- I tried set the display resolution using XRANDR, but it fails and when I made the insertion of another resolution, I just can't select this.
- Thinking about modules, maybe I can see a little ligth in the end of tunnel. I find a blacklist file into "/etc/modprobe.d" and removed the module "radeonfb" of blacklist, but when I tried to restart, the machine only shows a black screen with the mouse pointer only. to fix this I changed the "quiet" entry of boot line and changed it with "single" to show the command line and I can see that when the module "radeonfb" is loaded, the letters of command line become small (like it have made a resolution adjustment) but I need understand why only a black screen and the mouse pointer is showed.
**NOTE:** The xorgs and firmware-linux are installed but doesn't work. I really don't need 3d acceleration, but I need to resize my screen. Actually it's 1024x768 but the hardware can show 1280x800.

Enable ATI GPU work on debian 11
I'm on an old laptop with AMD ATI Radeon 6490 M. radeon.modeset=0 amdgpu.runpm=0 acpi_backlight=intel_blacklight
It makes it boot, but I want the GPU to work (mainly because I want to unload the CPU and perhaps the battery will last longer?).
This
radeon.si_support=0 radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 amdgpu.cik_support=1 amdgpu.dc=1
doesn't help either: it still freezes exactly the same way.
[This](https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/ATI#Installation) arch wiki suggestion to install mesa
didn't change anything either, still freezes.
I also tried pulling the driver from [my exact GPU official webpage](https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-hd/amd-radeon-hd-6000m-series/amd-radeon-hd-6490m) , but it gives error something like "the driver only supports X server versions 6.9 to 1.10, yours is 1.20".
Any idea how to make it actually work?

The time has come for me to upgrade my aging gpu (9800 gt). The AMD 7950 has caught my attention because of the attractive price with pleasing benchmarks. But it is common knowledge that AMD GPUs have poor support on Linux.
What sort of performance can I expect, with say, the latest version of Ubuntu? Will I have issues starting X. Will I have issues with a dual monitor setup? Will basic games such as minecraft or neverball play as expected without problems? Will there be any issues with video playback or flash?
I tried doing some research with how this card performs on Linux, but google lacks any usable resources.
If the 7950 is completely useless when paired with a Linux system, can someone suggest a comparable nvidia gpu for the same price range with similar performance?

I really appreciate a hand, because I have missed something or did something wrong.
My current kernel version and graphic card
Linux 4.19.0-12-amd64 x86_64 Debian
04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Picasso (rev c1)
I have followed this steps:
Fresh Debian buster netinst without any x11 enviroment. Just console mode.
Graphic card and model
04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Picasso (rev c1)
Updated the repositories adding non-free contrib
and installed the packages:
firmware-linux-nonfree firmware-realtek firmware-amd-graphics libgl1-mesa-dri libglx-mesa0 mesa-vulkan-drivers xserver-xorg-video-all
Also copied the file picasso_ta.bin
to /usr/lib/firmware/amdgpu/
like here
Executed tasksel
and selected xfce.
Tried a new xorg.conf running
Xorg -configure
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new

I have a ubuntu 14.04 server that connects to a A/V Amplifier via HDMI.
The problem is, if the amp has a source selected other than the Ubuntu during boot up of the ubuntu m/c, then when the ubu server source is selected there is no output.
This is the output of xrandr when the m/c IS selected as the A/V source during bootup:
xrandr -d :0
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1600 x 1200, maximum 16384 x 16384
DFP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DFP2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DFP3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DFP4 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DFP5 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 160mm x 90mm
1920x1080 60.0*+ 50.0 59.9 60.1 50.0 30.0 25.0 24.0 60.0 30.0 24.0
1776x1000 50.0 59.9 50.0 25.0 24.0 60.0 30.0
DFP6 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
CRT1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
I have tried executing a xrandr script with CRON during boot, however that does not work:
@reboot /usr/bin/xrandr -d :0 --addmode DFP5 1920x1080; /usr/bin/xrandr -d :0 --output DFP5 --mode 1920x1080;
I also tried modifying the kernel params in /etc/default/grub.conf:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="video=HDMI-A-1:1920x1080D"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="video=HDMI-A:1920x1080D"
I tried both HDMI-A and HDMI-A-1 as I see that others have used that ID, but neither work.
After rebooting with the server NOT selected as the A/V source, and running xrandr it appears that CRT is enabled, but not the HDMI Source:
# xrandr -d :0
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1600 x 1200, maximum 16384 x 16384
DFP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DFP2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DFP3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DFP4 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DFP5 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DFP6 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
CRT1 connected 1600x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
1600x1200 60.0*+
1400x1050 60.0
How can I force the HDMI to be enabled and connected during boot, irregardless of whether or not it detects a monitor ?

I was wondering if Unix systems use the GPU for the startup splash/loading screen because I've been having some trouble with an overheating Mac with graphics issues. Unix-type systems (such as MacOS 10.6, 10.10 and different versions of Ubuntu) show the splash screen, but never actually boot into the GUI (typically just a plain black/blue/white screen after the startup splash). Windows, however, starts up (I assume this is what's happening as I can hear hard drive activity) and only shows a black screen (no splash or loading screen). This just made me curious as I have a cursed 2008 ATI iMac. I plan later to try reapplying thermal paste to see if that does any good, and then try a reflow (I know this'll only be a very temporary solution but I just want to see if anything will work), but if all else fails, it'll probably go into the bin.

When I try to install AMD Catalyst to my Kali Linux 2.0 detailed as below
root@blackbox:~/Downloads/fglrx-15.302# uname -a
Linux blackbox 4.9.0-kali3-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.13-1kali3 (2017-03-13) x86_64 GNU/Linux
I get this following error.
error: Detected X Server version 'XServer 1.19.2_64a' is not supported. Supported versions are X.Org 6.9 or later, up to XServer 1.10 (default:v2:x86_64:lib32:XServer 1.19.2_64a:none:4.9.0-kali3-amd64:)
Installation will not proceed.
And no new updated drivers were found in AMD's website. So I would like to downgrade my XServer to supported version. How do I do this?
Details on my dedicated graphics card as below

And is there a way to find out that the current generic driver supports automatic switchable graphics? And is there a way to find it?
P.S
I am relatively new to Linux. So please go easy on me.Thank You.

When I try to start GDM using either the ATI or Intel drivers, booted without KMS, Xorg fails with a message about not finding a suitable driver (expected, since the Intel/AMD drivers need KMS). I've also tried using the
nomodeset
to kernel parameters), and I can't figure out why. However, the ATI driver _requires_ KMS, as does the Intel driver. What are my options for getting graphics with the desired setup as described above?
I'm on kernel 3.13.8, Arch GNU/Linux. I've also tried it with kernel 3.10.35, AKA the LTS kernel. No luck. As suggested in comments, I've tried to ping the affected machine after it locks up. I can't tell for sure, but it appears that it's completely frozen, not just the display.
I've also tried booting into Mac OS X and using gfxCardStatus to force using the Intel card. This did nothing.
In order to try to get more information, I've booted the MacBook with the following kernel parameters appended to my normal kernel line (the regular kernel, not the LTS kernel, and with quiet
removed), and with gfxCardStatus set to on-the-fly switching (this seemed to revert automatically on a reboot of OS X):
rootwait ignore_loglevel debug debug_locks_verbose=1 sched_debug initcall_debug mminit_loglevel=4 udev.log_priority=8 loglevel=8 earlyprintk=vga,keep log_buf_len=10M print_fatal_signals=1 apm.debug=Y i8042.debug=Y drm.debug=1 scsi_logging_level=1 usbserial.debug=Y option.debug=Y pl2303.debug=Y firewire_ohci.debug=1 hid.debug=1 pci_hotplug.debug=Y pci_hotplug.debug_acpi=Y shpchp.shpchp_debug=Y apic=debug show_lapic=all hpet=verbose lmb=debug pause_on_oops=5 panic=10 sysrq_always_enabled

xf86-video-vesa
package, but that fails with a message about having a suitable driver but not having a suitable configuration - something about the BIOS not being right.
I've tried using PRIME , but since I can't get Xorg to come up even without acceleration or anything fancy, xrandr
doesn't work and I can't even get past the first step.
I've thought about using vgaswitcheroo or something related, but I don't think that will do anything due to the fact that the underlying issue is, I believe, the fact that KMS is hanging.
The final thing I've tried is using the proprietary Catalyst driver, due to the fact that it has it's own KMS implementation, but I couldn't get it to install due to an Xorg server version mismatch. And honestly, I have less than zero desire to use a proprietary driver if I can help it, so I didn't try very hard.
I've sent the Linux Kernel Mailing List an email about this, and hopefully someone will get back to me.
Is it possible that I've run into a kernel bug or an Xorg bug worth reporting?
I've Googled, but nothing helpful's come up.

Previously installed amd-gpu-pro and solved the problem with the fact that the firewood on Ubuntu was not installed on my Mint, giving an error about the wrong OS. With that question, I figured it out. In amd-gpu-pro install, I changed OS check from Ubuntu to LinuxMint in the “launcher”. After these manipulations, the download went, but the problem is as follows:
When installing drivers, an error occurs:
Errors occurred while processing the following packages:
/tmp/apt-dpkg-install-1aU6FT/00-amdgpu-core_18.50-756341_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
When I try to install again, I get this:
mesa-amdgpu-vdpau-drivers: Depends: amdgpu-core but it will not be installed
wsa-amdgpu: Depends: amdgpu-core but it will not be installed
wsa-amdgpu: i386: Depends: amdgpu-core: i386
xserver-xorg-amdgpu-video-amdgpu: Depends: amdgpu-core but it will not be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try running “apt --fix-broken install” without specifying the package name, (or find another solution).
And if you run
sudo apt-get --fix-broken install
, then I get the same as when you first install:
Errors occurred while processing the following packages:
/var/opt/amdgpu-pro-local/./amdgpu-core_18.50-756341_all.deb
E: Sub-process / usr / bin / dpkg returned an error code (1)
How to solve this problem?

I would like to setup the dual monitor settings where I can use two monitors as a single Desktop with single panel, single launcher and when some programs are maximized then it should span both the monitors (i.e fullscreen over both the monitors).
I have ATI Raedon graphics cards and after searching it in the internet I found that by configuring the xorg.conf file I can setup the settings that I want.
I have tried several ways to do it i.e
using gksu amdcccle
And setting MultiDisplay settings, but my requirement has not yet been met. ***NOTE:*** I have done this using Nvidia graphics but its seem that it doesn't work with ATI graphics card.
After searching for a while I found the link which gave me hope that it can be done in ATI as well, According to this [link](http://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?18553-Ubuntu-9-04-amp-Catalyst-9-7-%28fglrx%29) .
xrandr must be disabled and AMD catalyst center will give the extra option of Big Desktop, to set it I used
sudo aticonfig --set-pcs-str="DDX,EnableRandR12,FALSE"
Then I restart X as per that [link](http://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?18553-Ubuntu-9-04-amp-Catalyst-9-7-%28fglrx%29) .
But this command gives this output to the stdout:
> SetPcsStr is exclusive, other options will not be used.
And I didn't find any extra configuration in my
xorg.conf
file.
And I didn't even get the Big Desktop option in the AMD Catalyst center's Display manager. There is still three options i.e:
Single Desktop
Cloned Display
Multiple Display

I am using Linux Mint 17.2 Cinamon. Everything is on the picture but I try to explain. When I run some linux applications windows are fully transparent. I can see only borders of those windows. There is also strange problem with icons near clock in the bottom-right corner.
For example the terminal is fully transparent and I can't use it but I know that it works because when I use the terminal from RubyMine it works. The same thing is when I start virtual terminal by Ctrl+Alt+F1.
External applications installed works fine but some apps strictly from Linux Mint got this problem. http://prntscr.com/8gqf8z

I have this card that works in Windows, and in Grub it has color and looks fine, but in xorg I just get black and white from the component (RGB) cables. I have tried changing tv format with xrandr, but no change. I can change the res though.
I suspect maybe its in composite mode instead of component mode. The card has a DVI and a DIN plug, that adapts to svideo or component (rgb)
These are the outputs of some commands:

I have a laptop with hybrid graphics: Intel + AMD Radeon. I am trying to enable Radeon card, however without success.
I have installed drivers according to the AtiHowTo - Debian Wiki :
xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu
firmware-linux-nonfree
Command
lspci -nn
gives the following output:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller : Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0a16] (rev 0b)
09:00.0 Display controller : Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Topaz XT [Radeon R7 M260/M265 / M340/M360 / M440/M445] [1002:6900] (rev ff)
... (other equipment not involved)
Command dmesg | grep -E 'drm|radeon' | grep -iE 'firmware|microcode'
gives no output.
Command xrandr --listproviders
gives the following output:

I have an ATI Radeon X1600 (DMS-59 connector with DMS-59 to dual-DVI adapter). I'm trying to get dual monitors working properly. So far, I've tried a few different Debian-based distributions. The only one I can get to properly display on both monitors is Backtrack 5 R3.
The problem: both monitors are detected by xrandr, and all settings look exactly the same. However, one monitor will not come out of standby. It doesn't appear to ever receive a signal. I've even changed the display layout in the System Settings. The screen size is correct, and the positioning is correct. I can even move the mouse to the second monitor, but it just stays in standby mode.
Any ideas?
***EDIT***
Output of xrandr follows:

After a new installation on my old hardware, I noticed considerably worse performance, although the hardware was not altered. Overall operation seems fine. But if I start a youtube video and put it in full screen, I get horrible performance -- even several seconds of freeze.
Also, running e.g. wesnoth is quite slow. I used to be able to run wesnoth on the big monitor while running a video on the second monitor simultaneously with no problem at all.

Is there any Linux distro that behaves well with this card and allows me to have GNOME3 without burning my laptop? If there is not a solution yet this question should help new users to get a quick update :)
