My objective is to set up a mini server (not HTPC) with low power consumption in idle mode, yet offering nice performance when used. The focus is more on data safety than availability. In other words: quality parts, but redundancy only for storage. Not considering myself to be biased, after some research I felt that some AMD desktop APUs would offer good value. Questions remaining are: - Will the idle state of the GPU lower power consumption and unleash resources for the CPU? - Will Cool'n'Quiet and Turbo Core lead to the intended low power consumption in idle mode but performance under load? - Will Linux support this scenario as intended? Quite a few questions and forum discussions seem to suggest that this is not necessarily the case.

To force uninstall, removing all installed files without verification, run /usr/share/ati/amd-uninstall.sh --force. Forcing uninstall is not recommended and may cause system corruption. My goal just install newer version, because current version broke after **upgrade kernel** . Xen: Graphical output on domU after secondary GPU passthrough

I have done a secondary GPU passthrough to a Linux domU, but I don't know how to output Xorg from the secondary GPU. The dom0 is using an Intel integrated graphics card. I am passing through an AMD 6450 to domU, as it there were two mentions of it here:
https://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Xen_VGA_Passthrough_Tested_Adapters Short list of what I did: 1. Enabled VT-d in motherboard BIOS 2. Added intel_iommu=on to dom0 GRUB 3. Blacklisted modules of GPU and it's audio subsystem 4. modprobe xen-pciback 5. xl pci-assignable-add _______ for both GPU and it's audio subsystem 6. Added the two PCI IDs to the Xen configuration file: pci = [ '_____', '_____' ] 7. Booted and installed Linux in the domU When I boot, after the above steps, I get one error message: libxl: error: libxl_pci.c:1151:libxl__device_pci_reset: The kernel doesn't support reset from sysfs for PCI device 0000:01.00.0 Despite the above error, when I run lspci -nnk on the domU, it shows the GPU and audio sub-device, including these lines: Kernel driver in use: radeon Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel Also, of course, a line for the primary domU virtual GPU: Kernel driver in use: cirrus Then, if I connect a VGA or DVI cable from the passed through GPU to the monitor, the monitor stays on (green power button) with a dark grey screen. Whereas usually, when the monitor detects no input, it just goes straight to standby (orange power button). So there is some kind of GPU output. If I startx and run xrandr through VNC, there doesn't seem to be any sign of the physical monitor, it seems there is only the virtualized VNC/cirrus monitor. If I add gfx_passthru=1 to the configuration file, it always fails at boot. The first error message that appears when I add gfx_passthru=1 is: libxl: error: libxl_dm.c:1302:libxl__build_device_model_args_new: unable to detect required gfx_passthru_kind Before I ever used virtualisation, to switch output from primary/secondary graphics card to the other, I would usually just change the settings in the BIOS, and Linux would follow. So Xorg + domU is very different territory for me. Does anyone know how I can output Xorg through the secondary GPU in the domU, after this point ? Various GPU passthrough guides online only cover Windows. **UPDATE** After StrongBad's response, I have moved from an Arch domU to a Debian 8.8 from the Debian wiki domU, as fglrx is not in the official Arch repos anymore. However, unlike the Arch domU, the Debian domU has no mysterious dark grey monitor output with always-on green power button, when the passed through GPU is connected to the monitor. Nonetheless, I did the following: 1. Installed fglrx 2. Ran sudo aticonfig --initial 3. Added the four lines to /etc/xorg.conf from the Debian wiki However, when I run startx from a VNC TTY, it just crashes. The first error message in Xorg.0.log states: (EE) fglrx(0): Failed to open CMMQS connection

Tried to install AMD Radeon HD 7870 Ghz graphics drivers and now Linux Mint doesnt want to boot. I installed the generic "Linux x86_64" driver from this https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-hd/amd-radeon-hd-7000-series/amd-radeon-hd-7870-ghz-edition page and installed it via the AMD Catalyst Proprietary Driver Setup, and got an error message popping up in a separate window saying something along the lines "there was an error during installation, the log file was saved in some directory" however the main driver setup window said installation was successful and reboot was required. So reboot I did. When booting, after the mint logo shows up, I only get a blackscreen with a single white underscore at the top left. No key combinations save CTRL+ALT+DELETE+ENTER (reboot) work. Nothing happens. In recovery mode, I tried, among all other options, the option to fix broken packages. After doing this and choosing "Resume normal boot" after a bunch of scrollin down messages (in the GRUB manager Id changed quiet splash to text) I get a black screen covering a blue screen message with an OK prompt at the bottom regarding something with the X-server not being able to be setup that pops up for a split second, and when I press enter I get the following X Server info (only typing what I assume to be relevant, if you need more info to resolve my problem I can type out the rest): X.Org X Server 1.18.4 Release Date: 2016-07-19 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: Linux 4.4.0-45-generic x86_64 Ubuntu Current Operating System: Linux marvin-desktop 4.4.0-53-generic Kernel command line... After I press I get: Would you like to view the detailed X server output as well? Yes yields the same thing as before with more (WW)arnings regarding stuff like font directories not existing, I can provide specifics if needed. The X Server is now disabled. Restart MDM when it is configured correctly. The joke is that after pressing Enter on this message, I get a blackscreen again, this time with a BIGGER white underscore that BLINKS. This is where I am stuck. Also tried: In recovery mode, started root shell, entered dpkg -l *xorg* Which yields tons of versions of xserver-xorg-v. Attempting to purge results in dpkg -P xserver-xorg-v dpkg: error: unable to access dpkg status area: Read-only file system

I also added the line radeon.modeset=0 to grub.cfg After the installation, I run fglrxinfo and it returned display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc. OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x209) OpenGL version string: 1.4 (2.1 Mesa 8.0.5) I was curious that I'm not running Kali Linux on VM (I installed it on my laptop). I rebooted my laptop, all was working fine until I got stuck on a all black with a non-blinking cursor. I launched a console via ctrl+alt+f1 and purge all fglrx. Deleted the xorg.conf and removed the radeon.modeset=0 to the grub.cfg. I was wondering where did I go wrong or there's no way to install these drivers on my laptop? Btw, my AMD GPU is AMD RADEON HD 8670M and my Intel one is Intel HD Graphics 4400. I really need the AMD GPU for pyrit.

I'm running Arch Linux and I'm trying to get a Radeon HD 6870 setup for gaming on Steam, specifically for Windows games such as Skyrim and Dark Souls 3 using Wine. I've done this on a desktop with identical hardware, but an nVidia card, and everything runs fine. However, doing the same with the Radeon card is killing me and I cannot replace the card right now. Since I have newer hardware (Ryzen), I need the newest kernel and Xorg, so the current catalyst/fglrx drivers are not an option (as they require xorg 117 and the lts kernel, which don't have Ryzen support and has issues with Ryzen), but it seems the current mesa drivers (pulled from mesa-git) is just not sufficient using the default configuration. Does anyone have a recommended change to the PKGBUILD that would help me here? I know there are several options on the mesa-git PKGBUILD that can be tweaked. Specifically, a lot of games require OpenGL 4 it looks like when running them through Wine, and I can force the OpenGL version, since its not natively supported due to missing FP64 extensions (which aren't really used in most games), but that causes crashes in the OpenGL wine dll. Linux games seem to run fine. Any ideas?

OpenSUSE Leap 42.1 reach end of life status 2017-05-17. Today I found time and willingness to do something about it. :-) After upgrade with zypper dup command and rebooting I saw a black screen. I managed to run SUSE in emergency mode and read journalctl -xb output. I would like to paste the whole log here, but I do not know how to do it. I heard systemd logs are stored binary. Few things I noticed in journal: * Dependency failed for Local File System. * Dependency failed for Local AMD External Events Deamon. * Dependency failed for Local A service to build fglrx kernel module for new kernels. I do have AMD Radeon 7850 and before upgrade I was using AMD proprietary driver. After reading journal, I ran command startx i got black screen. I guess the simplest solution would be switching to default drivers but I don't know how to do that. Also I am worried about Dependency failed for Local File System. Thank you in advance for any help. **Edit 1:** As sebath suggested, I redirect journal output to file. Logs exceeded message limit so I put it on pastebin: https://pastebin.com/2EU52QfV

Sometimes (very rarely actually) I have a problem that when I try to shut down my desktop, it will freeze with the following screen and I can only shut it down by pressing the power button for 8 seconds: Shutdown failure Does anyone know why this error occurs? I am guessing it is because of the proprietary fglrx-driver. How I could get more diagnostic information if it reoccurs? I guess there would be a lot more information than I can capture with a simply photo, but as soon as the screen appears it is impossible to do anything. The problem is, it occurs very rarely (maybe once a month) so it is not really a big hassle and I can not willingly recreate it. I would just like to know what exactly is causing it. Edit: After stumbling over this bug - this seems to be the reason for it: the fglrx driver seems to be buggy.

Could it just be that my boot is messed up somehow?? I also tried removing and reinstalling fglrx, but no changes. I've been to many forum questions already but no one seems to have solved this. http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1871360.html http://askubuntu.com/questions/120430/ubuntu-fails-on-boot-up This is really frustrating. All my mind is on that computer.. :( My specs: ElementaryOS, Dell Studio 1550

How do I install the fglrx driver on Debian stretch? The package tracker states that there is no package available right now, so I added Sid, pinned on 100. When I try to install fglrx-driver now, aptitude returns something about xorg-video-abi-18, a package which should be provided by the X server itself as stated here . How is it even possible to not have something as important as a driver in the repository of one of the biggest distros for almost an entire month now?

UltraWide display not working with AMD GPU on Debian 9
I have a Radeon HD 6950 GPU and a LG 21:9 monitor (LED IPS 25 Full HD 25UM58-P.AWZ). ### Problem I recently installed Debian 9 (stretch) and can't get the display to show in 2560x1080, just 1920x1080 (with black bars on both sides, or really stretched if I configure my monitor to widen it forcefully...
I have a Radeon HD 6950 GPU and a LG 21:9 monitor (LED IPS 25 Full HD 25UM58-P.AWZ). ### Problem I recently installed Debian 9 (stretch) and can't get the display to show in 2560x1080, just 1920x1080 (with black bars on both sides, or really stretched if I configure my monitor to widen it forcefully). The correct resolution won't show up as default in the display manager. ### What I've already tried to do #### Manually set the resolution using xrandr I've tried adding the resolution to xrandr (using both gtf and cvt), but it still shows a 16:9 resolution, with a really messed up image, like it was a 21:9 display scaled. Even if I set my monitor to forcefully widen the image to 21:9 the image is still messed up. #### Install the proprietary drivers (fglrx) This worked when I was using Debian 8 (jessie). I have had this problem since I bought this monitor, and because of it I actually changed OSs a bunch of times trying to get it to work. It seemed to only work with fglrx (that only worked on Debian). In Debian 9, however, it seems fglrx is not available [](https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=fglrx) . I even tried to get the driver from [AMD's site](http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Linux%20x86#) , but it failed saying my XServer version was too new. Let me know if more info on my computer is needed.

I have downloaded the fglrx driver installer from the ATI drivers page. when I start the installation, everything goes smoothly until I hit an error message, telling me to check /usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log. The contents of that file are as follows: > Check if system has the tools required > for installation. fglrx installation > requires that the system have kernel > headers. > /lib/modules/3.8.11-200.fc18.x86_64/build/include/linux/version.h cannot be found on this system. One or > more tools required for installation > cannot be found on the system. Install > the required tools before installing > the fglrx driver. Optionally, run the > installer with --force option to > install without the tools. Forcing > install will disable AMD hardware > acceleration and may make your system > unstable. Not recommended. Now, after a bit of searching around, I found that the symbolic link called build in /lib/modules/3.8.11-200.fc18.x86_64 points to a nonexistent location. I installed the kernel-devel package, and now it had pointed to an existing directory. However, in the /lib/modules/3.8.11-200.fc18.x86_64/build/include/linux/ directory, that is populated with various header files - I cannot find the one I need - version.h. How can I solve this problem? Should I install the driver in a different manner? Which other package can I install to get the version.h file? I'm running a clean install (default) of Fedora 18, which I had updated today.

I recently installed Kali GNU/Linux Rolling but I cant install my graphics drivers, I followed this link Got a few errors along the way but this one remains unsolved. This shows up when I press the install button: cat /usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log Supported adapter detected. Check if system has the tools required for installation. fglrx installation requires that the system have kernel headers for greater than 3.6 release. /lib/modules/4.6.0-kali1-amd64/build/include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h cannot be found on this system. One or more tools required for installation cannot be found on the system. Install the required tools before installing the fglrx driver. Optionally, run the installer with --force option to install without the tools. Forcing install will disable AMD hardware acceleration and may make your system unstable. Not recommended. but uname -r tells me I have 4.6.0-kali1-amd64, hence my confusion.

I installed fglrx-updates on a fresh install of Mint 17.2 via [this guide for Ubuntu 14.04](https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/AMD) . When I type in $ fglrxinfo display: :0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: X.Org OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD CAYMAN OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 10.1.3 I've tried purging it and reinstalling it as fglrx instead of fglrx-updates to no avail. If I type $ amdcccle It tells me that "There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following. No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly. Please install the AMD driver appropriate for you AMD hardware, or configure using aticonfig." I'm running an HD 6970.
