I have quality issue with PDF printing local (CUPS) vs. Google Cloud Printing. (GCP is better, with CUPS I get wrong size, wrong characters, wrong fonts. So I want to know what CUPS does!) The printer can handle a couple of formats natively: application/pdf (≥ 1.0, ≤ 1.7), image/jpeg, image/tiff, image/pwg-raster I have added the printer to CUPS in different ways over the months, I also used it „driverless”, where CUPS detects the printer in the local network itself. In all cases it prints PDF with errors; not entirely, but rendering the print useless to me. What happens: page is zoomed in by ~30%, starting from page 2 or 3 the fonts get mixed up, characters turn into symbols, paragraphs printed in bold, etc... The same PDFs turn out great if printed via Google Cloud Print on the same printer. Directly feeding the printer a USB-stick with the PDF is equally great. – I want to have the same good results with printing from my computer! My questions are: - I want to know what pipeline each CUPS printer takes on my machine before it is sent to the real printer. Does it detect the format? How? Will it reconvert to PDF again? Which PPD will it use? What other decisions is the pipeline taking and what conversions? - From a passed print job I want to know: What did CUPS detect? What conversions did it do? Where can I fetch the intermediate outputs generated? I found no good entry point for CUPS debugging/reverse-engineering so far (with _my_ questions in mind)...

I just bought a Brother QL-800 label printer with a 62mm wide continuous tape roll installed. Trying to make use of the continuous tape, I wanted to add an individual paper size (a custom length, in that case). Alas, all paper lengths fail except those provided in the default PPD (which are 29mm and 100m), with a red flashing light on the printer. CUPS does not recognize the problem and reports a successful print. Does anyone know how to tackle this issue? As I cannot even read the error message from the printer, I feel pretty lost with this. I am aware of What's the easiest way to add custom page sizes to a .ppd? on Stack Overflow and also of the brpapertoollpr_ql800 tool from Brother . I wrote myself a script to manipulate the PPD file. If I start with a blank file and add 62mmx29mm and 62mmx100mm, they print fine. All other sizes fail.

I have some trouble when printing to custom paper sizes. Currently, I want to print something to a 21cm x 21cm card. So, I created a document with this size in libre office and exported it to PDF. The PDF looks fine. When I want to print the document, the printer dialog has no option for this paper size. If I choose Din A4 (also 21cm wide), strange things happen: * __Acrobat Reader__ centers the document on an A4 sheet as it thinks it's printing to A4. * __Okular__ aligns the top of the document with the top of the sheet. This would be fine and exactly what I want, but it also crops the upper part of the documents. It looks as if it puts the document top-aligned on the sheet and then erases everything outside a center-aligned box of the same size as the document size. My current workaround is to create the document in A4 size, aligning the area to be printed to the top of the page. However, this looks odd when creating the document. I saw that using the --custom option of the printing command may allow this, but I do not want to print the documents from the command line. --- So, my question is: * How can I print documents of custom page sizes to paper sheets of the same custom size? * I saw paper sizes defined in my PPD file. Can I just edit it? Is there a convenient tool for this? My printer is a brother L2340 laser printer with original cups drivers from brother. I'm running OpenSuse 13.2, cups is 1.5.4 if I'm correct.

sudo dpkg -i XeroxOfficev5Pkg-Linuxx86_64-5.20.661.4684.deb
with no errors. I thought I would be lucky enough to see the printer model now show up in CUPS, but it doesn't. When running lpinfo -m | grep "xerox", I don't see an entry for the model, which I believe to be the issue. After a lot of googling, I haven't come up with an answer. Am I missing a step or file when it comes to Linux printing with Cups, or is it just that this printer may not be supported? EDIT: I was able to find the PPD file and get it to show up, however it doesn't seem to print the test page. I have it set up using socket://ip-address and have the ppd selected. I'm guessing this may be a driver issue.

I have an OKI B430d printer, which is connected to an Odroid C2 (a single-board computer similar to the Raspberry Pi) via USB. The Odroid runs Arch Linux Arm with a cups server, so every device in the local network can use the printer. The printer is configured as RAW printer. My desktop computer runs Arch Linux with a cups instance, too. This cups instance connects to the Odroid via ipp and also has the ppd file for the printer. Now to the issue I started noticing ~8 months ago: Sometimes the printer would print a blank page containing only
--------------------------
or
.0 0
    %-------------------------------------------------
or
source 1.0 0
             %-------------------------------------------------
The issue also occured when printing from a different PC than mine (but also running cups on Arch Linux). Yesterday I printed some more PDFs and this time the printer printed a blank page containing the following in front of 3 jobs:
OKI_Driver_Procedure_Patch_Resource 1.0 0
                                         %------------------------------------
Finally something to search for! I found a PPD file which contained a similar line, so I searched the PPD file I use for the printer for the line and found it on line 108: https://www.oki.com/eu/printing/support/drivers-and-utilities/?id=46262901FZ01 Today, I printed a [test PDF](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d3/Test.pdf) after enabling debug logging for both cups instances. I pasted the debug logs here: https://gist.github.com/jkhsjdhjs/aab53920040f62b43c878c74a61860ea One thing I did change for the printer locally was lpadmin -p -o pdftops-renderer-default=pdftops. It didn't work without it, but I don't think that's the cause. Let me know if there's more info I can provide. Thanks in advance. EDIT: So I connected the printer directly to my PC, same issue. Then I created a test printing queue using the same PPD but printing the postscript output to a file instead. I noticed that the output that I suspected to from the PPD file is also in the postscript document that is sent to the printer:
%%BeginResource: OKI_Driver_Procedure_Patch_Resource 1.0 0
%-------------------------------------------------
%% OKI Driver Procedure ver 1.0
%%    Date: Dec. 27, 2005  Edt: 03
%-------------------------------------------------

/OK@setpagedevice_sadj where {pop}{
 /OK@setpagedevice_sadj /setpagedevice load def
/OK@PageDevice_Install_proc currentpagedevice /Install get def
> setpagedevice
}ifelse
So for some reason the printer fails to correctly interpret the PostScript sometimes.

Print Command: $ lp -d c2011 test.pdf CUPS version: 2.1.3 CUPS installed via command: $ sudo apt install cups System: Ubuntu xenial armhf via "LinuxDeploy" app on Android. The system also has foo2zjs installed, works well with HP LaserJet P1102w. =========================================================================== The printer works fine when the CUPS Status says "Idle". After a pdf file normally printed, the status turn to Idle - "Sending data to printer." And then I do the next print, the printer prints nonsense text and blank pages. So I run $ sudo service cups restart And then printer status turn back to "Idle". And then print, and then "Sending data to printer" again. It's not a good solution that restarting CUPS before printing.

How to add a printer using a PPD found using lpinfo
If I run `lpinfo -m` I get a list of PPD files available on my system: ``` $ lpinfo -m ... lsb/usr/xerox/xrx7855.ppd Xerox WorkCentre 7855 ... foomatic-db-ppds/Xerox/xrx133.ppd Xerox WorkCentre Pro 133 v3015.103 PS foomatic:Xerox-WorkCentre_XK35c-lex5700.ppd Xerox WorkCentre XK35c Foomatic/lex5700 `...
If I run lpinfo -m I get a list of PPD files available on my system:
$ lpinfo -m
...
lsb/usr/xerox/xrx7855.ppd Xerox WorkCentre 7855
...
foomatic-db-ppds/Xerox/xrx133.ppd Xerox WorkCentre Pro 133 v3015.103 PS
foomatic:Xerox-WorkCentre_XK35c-lex5700.ppd Xerox WorkCentre XK35c Foomatic/lex5700
Of these three examples, I can manually find the path to the PPD of the first two:
lsb/usr/xerox/xrx7855.ppd                   -> /usr/share/ppd/xerox/xrx7855.ppd
foomatic-db-ppds/Xerox/xrx133.ppd           -> /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/PPD/Xerox/xrx133.ppd
foomatic:Xerox-WorkCentre_XK35c-lex5700.ppd -> ???
When I want to add a new printer using a specific PPD, I can't use the output of lpinfo:
$ lpadmin -p foo -P foomatic-db-ppds/Xerox/xrx133.ppd -v 'smb://example.org/foo'
lpadmin: Unable to open PPD "foomatic-db-ppds/Xerox/xrx133.ppd": Unable to open PPD file on line 0.
lpadmin: Unable to open PPD file "foomatic-db-ppds/Xerox/xrx133.ppd" - No such file or directory
But using the path works:
$ lpadmin -p foo -P /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/PPD/Xerox/xrx133.ppd -v 'smb://example.org/foo'
Is there a way to add a printer using a specific PPD by using the output of lpinfo? If not directly, can I translate the output of lpinfo to a path and how would I use foomatic:Xerox-WorkCentre_XK35c-lex5700.ppd?

Problem: Any user on the system can grep credential /etc/cups/ppd/Xerox.ppd no matter if CUPS allows him to use that printer. Being more restrictive on the file permissions of that file makes it impossible for users to set options like paper format and duplex/simplex, so that's no option. For example, I want lpoptions -l to keep working. Is there a way to overcome this?

I am trying to set up a computer linux to be able to print from my printer: Brother DCP 7030. But (twist!) for security reasons this computer should never go online. So any software I need to install will need to be downloaded with another machine, put in a usb stick, and copied onto the linux machine. Sweet. The operating system is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (not sure what does it mean). OS type: 32-bit. Now the system seem to only accept PPD files as printer drivers. While Brother does not offer any ppd file for this printer (I tried the 7025 and 7045, but they don't work). http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_prn.html#DCP-7030 What should I do?

CUPS: Can't set option for halftoning algorithm after upgrade from Debian squeeze to wheezy
After upgrading my main Debian box from squeeze to wheezy recently, I couldn't set the option for my printer's halftoning algorithm any more. It appears that the upgrade of cups that happened during the dist upgrade has dumbed down my printer's ppd file. How do I get this option back?
