I am currently trying to install Bodhi linux (version as of 2014_07_09) to my Laptop.
I booted from USB-drive into the live environment and hit install. After some attempts I even found on the Distro's website that they do **NOT** recommend using the "download updates during installation"-checkbox, so I didn't do that anymore.
Regardless though:
I get to choose the language and to the quickchecks (Disk-space, AC-plugged, internet) and ,as I chose not to bother connecting to the internet at all, to the "are you sure you don't want to connect to one of these WiFis"-screens.
After that I hit "continue", the cursor turns to the wristwatch and then I wait and nothing happens.
The system is very responsive: I can do other things or easily cancel the installation, just the installation does not do anything at all. I gave it around 30 minutes and nothing.
Furthermore, since the installer looks a lot like Ubuntu's and also because I haven't decided anything in that direction, I expected to first see at least the "choose and edit partitions"-interface.
Any advice on what I might do to fix this or at least find the reasons for the stoppage?

My laptop wakes up immediately after suspend (or it fails suspending? are they two different cases?).
It is an old Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5105, 8Gb RAM.
It has a recently installed bodhi Linux (an Ubuntu derivative, so for many many things it works the same as Ubuntu).
None of the solutions I found works.
The two candidates in BIOS are disabled (*Wake on LAN* and *Wake on Keyboard*).
There is a touchpad too, no mouse or bluetooth receiver.
Below I am posting relevant info, with sources.
$ uname -a
Linux Orion 5.4.0-107-generic #121-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 24 16:04:27 UTC 2022 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

What else do I need to do to see all my host folders in the VM?
I tried clicking Insert Guest Additions CD from Device menu but it doesn't do anything.
I'm also unable to cd into that directory from terminal in the VM
compilers@compilers-vm:/media$ cd sf_Compiler
bash: cd: sf_Compiler: Permission denied
compilers@compilers-vm:/media$
I tried sudo cd as well.

I'm including details of my AUDIO packages / environment below. Other similar questions/answers I've researched haven't worked due to my particular below limitations. Either:
1) would require a reboot; and/or
2) requires an entirely NEW base set of audio-packages, which consume too much RAM in addition to running the below webapps;
and/or
3) if needs new /conflicting/ packages, then => simply fails to work on my particular distro / software environment due to unmet dependencies, e.g. Bodhi Linux is using something different than what others are running in similar questions/answers.
4) specifies a different /version/ of the packages/base OS than what i've got installed. N.B. if i try to run
apt-get upgrade
my system will soon hang, due to out-of-memory/RAMDISK.
### Environment
- OS: Bodhi Linux
(**Ubuntu** community variant;
uses ubuntu-minimal
metapackage, which is the minimal core of Ubuntu, and has full access to respective Ubuntu repositories)
- HARDWARE: macbookpro 5,5 (mid-2008/mid-2009).
- 32/64? depends on the day/session. Sometimes 32bit, other times 64bit; both will boot.
- LiveCD/LiveDVD (NOT_persistence),
- either, **Bodhi 5.1.0 / Ubuntu 18.04 **
* or, Bodhi 6.0.0 / Ubuntu 20.04
- cat /etc/debian_version
:
buster/sid
- (from Bodhi 5.1.0, 32bit livecd) :
- uname -a
:
Linux bodhi 4.9.0-6-686 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.88-1+deb9u1 (2018-05-07) i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux
- lsb_release -a
:
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID:Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu
Release: 18.04
Codename: bionic
---
What makes this question unique:
Am running on a LIVECD/LIVEDVD,
so
- I CAN (obviously) install new packages [to the LIMITS OF MY RAMDISK and working memory!]
- but I'm UNABLE TO REBOOT.
(why I'm running this environment is a separate question: no im not currently interested in persistence )
so
NO PERSISTENCE
NO REBOOTS AVAILABLE
Must be in realtime only
---
### INSTALLED/base AUDIO ENVIRONMENT:
Note: this is the base livecd system; I can of course [to the limits of my ramdisk] install additional packages.

### My actual question
I want to use a webapp in-browser, to record in realtime a Voice, Zoom, Jitsi, or other call.
[With fully informed consent of the party]
HOW/CRITERIA:
I'd like to create a 'virtual microphone', as a second or third audio-input-method, which combines both
- my physical laptop microphone; and
- audio-out (e.g. headphones);
such that
1. both the above (mic and headphones) continue to work normally; and
2. their audio-feed gets "tee'd" also into this additional, "virtual microphone"; and
3. the latter ("virtual microphone") can be chosen by my webbrowser (e.g. firefox or any chromium-based browser) as a "real microphone" audio-input method; and
4. two different websites** can both /simultaneously/ use the two DIFFERENT 'microphones' as audio-input ("this website is recording/listening to your microphone").... one being the actual call/conference i'm on, using the real/physical mic; the other being something e.g. otter using my combined 'virtual' mic, which contains both my mic and my audio-output, combined. (preferably different tabs/webapps - running in the same browser - BUT,
could be different browsers if needed e.g. both firefox and chromium installed; each browser listening to a different mic, one phyiscal and the other virtual)
Responses requested:
I've already read a bunch of man-pages and documentation.
Other answers to similar questions have already been researched -- but, for one reason or another, aren't functioning on my machine (e.g. i try it, and those pkgs aren't installed, because my system is using an entirely different ubuntu base, AND/OR i'd need to reboot my machine with persistence (i.e. an actually installed OS, not a livecd), which i'm unable to do since i dont have a hard drive and the usb persistence methods quickly destroy said usb drive.

After a series of attempts at removing packages, and installing again with/without the virtualenv, I came across various hurdles, which required me doing (with the help of ref , ref )
$ conda install -c conda-forge pygobject
$ conda install -c conda-forge gtk3
At one point, with some combination of actions and configuration (which I cannot reproduce now), I *seemed* to have overcome the error reported, but I was not able to connect to VPN.
After further attempts I am again at the original point.
**EDIT #2**:
$ sudo apt install -y python3-gi python3-gi-cairo gir1.2-gtk-3.0
[sudo] password for user1:

python3-gi is already the newest version (3.36.0-1).
python3-gi-cairo is already the newest version (3.36.0-1).
gir1.2-gtk-3.0 is already the newest version (3.24.20-0ubuntu1.1).

**EDIT**:
I followed the answer by GADER.
Now I get

As evident, the python used is from anaconda (and I hope the update didn't break anything).
I still have to debug the new error.

I can connect neatly from Win 10, following the same procedure I am used to do to connect to Ubuntu boxes.
Now I want vino-server
to start automatically on boot.
What I use in Ubuntu (1. Add vino-server
to startup applications, 2. Have Gnome automatically logging into my user (source )) didn't work for me here.
The reason: I could not find a way to startup an arbitrary application in Bodhi Linux. I found how to add startup applications only from a given list, and vino-server
is not in there (source : "There doesn't appear to be a way to add custom commands or scripts in the tool so if the utility or application is not found automatically it may require further research to add it").
Other alternatives repeatedly found (which I never tried in Ubuntu) did not work for me here:
1. Setting up a ~/.config/autostart/vino_server.desktop
file (source ).
2. Starting vino-server
as a service (source ).
The contents of my ~/.config/autostart/vino_server.desktop
is
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=/usr/lib/vino/vino-server
Name=vino Server
How can I make this work?
(perhaps finding a way to add an arbitrary application at startup, method #1 above). **Note**: In my case, I don't have
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME
set (I do have many other $XDG_...
variables).
I don't know the reason for this, and whether this may cause vino_server.desktop
not being run on login, method #1.
As per this , "a compliant desktop environment (for the freedesktop.org / XDG Base Directory Specification) will search
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/autostart
for any .desktop
files and execute them on startup. So a missing $XDG_CONFIG_HOME
might be a problem.
OTOH, official documentation states that "
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME
defines the base directory relative to which user-specific configuration files should be stored. If $XDG_CONFIG_HOME
is either not set or empty, a default equal to $HOME/.config
should be used."
I don't know if the latter means one should expect $XDG_CONFIG_HOME
to be always set, unless Moksha (the desktop environment) were not XDG-compliant.

So this was my first time putting up a LAMP stack on a Bodhi machine (previously experience with WAMP, and LAMP on 10.04); I got Apache going, and a Drupal install begun, then I go to create a new database and when I log in to phpmyadmin ... I get a 'cannot connect error'. Tracing this back, the issue began once I tried to get virtual hosts up and running in Apache; once that was done I started running into socket connection issues with mysql.
Initially the problem looked like this:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)
Using ls -lart /var/run/my*
I get this:
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 mysql root 40 Jan 31 11:56 .
drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 740 Jan 31 12:21 ..`
I ran touch /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
and set chown -R mysql /var/run/mysqld
which allows for:
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 740 Jan 31 12:21 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 mysql root 0 Jan 31 13:58 mysqld.sock
drwxr-xr-x 2 mysql root 60 Jan 31 13:58 .
- So when I try to run mysql -u root -p
I get one error - ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (13)
(note it is no longer ERROR 2002...(2) but rather ERROR 2002...(13))
- If I try service mysql restart
(or stop, start) I get another error - `start: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.49" (uid=1000 pid=8407 comm="start mysql ") interface="com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6.Job" member="Start" error name="(unset)" requested_reply="0" destination="com.ubuntu.Upstart" (uid=0 pid=1 comm="/sbin/init")
`
- When I run sudo service mysql restart
I get `stop: Unknown instance:
start: Job failed to start
`
- When I run service mysql status
I get "mysql stop/waiting"
What can I do to diagnose the issues I am having with mysql? I may be overlooking an utterly simple mysql issue and would appreciate any feedback on what I've done so far.
Also, being a Bodhi machine and most of the instruction/feedback being written for Ubuntu, I am unsure to what extent any Ubuntu instruction may not apply. In particular, am I running into a problem related to the difference between /etc/init.d/...
and service ... ...
commands? Or, perhaps, am I running into a difference between libraries of the two?

Each time I'm making live USB and I have set BIOS to boot from usb first.
The initialization starts, and when I choose install, on each of tried distros comp freezes and I can only reset it.
When I tried starting Linux Lite 3.8 in safe mode, after some unpacking (and really long idle time) the computer turned off. The same happened when I tried running it from DVD - comp turned off after selecting "Start Linux Lite".
Computer works under Win XP.

Bodhi Linux - Hanging on Install

It hangs on the screen titled "Preparing to install Bodhi" with two green-for-go checks next to the requirements ("has at least 3.1 GB available drive space","is connected to the internet"). I hit **Continue**, and then **Continue** and **Back** become greyed out, and then that's it. I've restarted and done this at least six times. I checked the drive for errors, it passed. I even unplugged my other two internals, *because, I don't know, why not*. I have hit **Continue** after ensuring that "Download updates while installing" is checked and also after ensuring that it is deselected. Today, just in case I was being too impatient, I hit **Continue**, left for my 8-hour work day, and came back to the exact same screen I had left this morning.

Having some issues installing Bodhi onto a MacBook era 2008. Right now it's hung with the splash screen for the first boot. Only the other day this laptop ran Bodhi fine, but now I'm stuck in a loop of re-installing. (I tried Ubuntu yesterday, which was too much for this system, so am going back to Bodhi.)
My concern is that interrupting the splash screen will again result in GRUB issues. To re-iterate, this laptop ran Bodhi fine just a few days ago.

Having installed Ubuntu, can I perhaps pare down the system in some way? Remove some kernel modules?
Of course, the Moksha desktop is probably a huge factor.
While I'm not entirely adverse to trying Xubuntu, Puppy Linux, et. al., I'd like to stick with either Ubuntu, or, if that's not workable, then Bodhi.

Ubuntu Server seems to install differently on Macbooks -- but maybe it's a UEFI problem:

I'm running Bodhi Linux 2.3 with onboard Intel graphics. I think the driver being used is
i915
, according to lsmod
, but I could be wrong.
