I am trying to set up a LAN chat with two users using Linux server and none of them is root.
I have tried this two methods:
write account_name
on both computers
And:
nc -l port_number
on first computer
nc IP_adress port_number
on second computer
But the problem is whenever I write something and person on the other side hits enter it breaks also my line e.g:
I am typing: "This is just a simenterple text". And this enter from another person breaks my line.
Is there way how can I fix that? Or another way I can set up this chat?

I have installed "Gnome Jami" in my Linux box. It provides text, audio and video chat along with Screen Sharing. The FAQs of the software says that in order to share my screen during call, I have to follow these step:
> 1. During a call, right-click on the correspondence screen.
> 2. Select the “Screen Sharing” option.
> 3. Your screen is now shared.
But I cannot figure it out. Right clicking anywhere on the main-screen or chat window or any other place, does not bring Screen Sharing option. If you have used Jami, then kindly guide me about screen sharing in it.

I am trying to use the [Jitsi Meet](https://meet.jit.si/) web chat service with Icecat, but I am having problems (Icecat is derived from Firefox, but is more privacy/security focused). If I go to test.webrtc.org , it tells me that it can't access my webcam or microphone, despite the fact that I have given permissions in the preferences for that URL to access both.
Does anyone know how I can troubleshoot this?

In the presence of current wave of COVID-19, we all are forced to work-from-home and attend online group meetings. In this context, my organization is currently using MS Teams for such meetings. However, we are trying to move away to some other similar product (as we are not comfortable to give control and data to MS). So, in this effort, first we tried Zoom, but it has a limitation of 40 minutes. Then we tried Jitsi, which is good but in Jitsi, anyone of the participants can kick-out any other (which is a serious problem). Therefore, we are still looking for an Open Source alternative to MS Teams at least following functionalities:
> 1. Confrence Call
> 2. Screen Sharing
> 3. Only Admin can kick out any member
If you happen to know any software with these features, kindly let me know. Thanks.

cannot access USB device from a program started with systemd
I have the following script to send SMS messages with a GSM usb modem: #!/bin/bash env > /home/hans/systemenv.txt #touch /home/homeassistant/pipo2.txt read count /dev/ttyUSB0 chat TIMEOUT 1 "" "AT+CMGS=\"0123456789\"" "OK" > /dev/ttyUSB0 chat TIMEOUT 1 "" "$1" "OK" > /dev/ttyUSB0 chat TIMEOUT 1 "" "...
I have the following script to send SMS messages with a GSM usb modem:
#!/bin/bash
env > /home/hans/systemenv.txt
#touch /home/homeassistant/pipo2.txt
read count /dev/ttyUSB0
chat TIMEOUT 1 "" "AT+CMGS=\"0123456789\"" "OK" > /dev/ttyUSB0
chat TIMEOUT 1 "" "$1" "OK" > /dev/ttyUSB0
chat TIMEOUT 1 "" "^Z" "OK" > /dev/ttyUSB0
#sleep 2
#chat TIMEOUT 1 "" "AT+CMGS=\"0987654321\"" "OK" > /dev/ttyUSB0
#chat TIMEOUT 1 "" "$1" "OK" > /dev/ttyUSB0
#chat TIMEOUT 1 "" "^Z" "OK" > /dev/ttyUSB0
let 'count++'
echo $count > /home/homeassistant/.homeassistant/smsCounter.txt
The script works fine when called from the command line, but when it is called from any program that was started with systemd, the script actually runs, but the chat commands do not get executed. Running sudo journalctl -f -xe, shows the following when the script is called from a program running in a systemd service:
Oct 08 13:37:37 homeassistant chat: Can't get terminal parameters: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Oct 08 13:37:37 homeassistant chat: Can't get terminal parameters: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Oct 08 13:37:37 homeassistant chat: Can't get terminal parameters: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Oct 08 13:37:37 homeassistant chat: Can't get terminal parameters: Inappropriate ioctl for device
In this case, the script was called from a program called home assistant. Home assistant was started from a systemd.service script. If I start home assistant from the terminal, as the same user that the systemd.service was running as, the above do not show and the sms gets sent.
Calling the same script from any other program that was started with systemctl results in the same error.

How to talk to a tap device on Linux from another computer

I am running Linux on VMware Fusion on my Mac. On Linux, I am using a TCP echo server based on TAP devices (it's called PicoTCP, link here: https://github.com/tass-belgium/picotcp) . I run the echo server with this command:
sudo ./build/test/picoapp.elf --tap tap1:192.168.13.37:255.255.255.0 --app tcpecho:8000
on one terminal window, and I can then talk to the echo server by using the command: sudo ip addr add 192.168.13.38/24 dev tap1 ; sudo ip link set tap1 up;
followed by a simple netcat like this: nc 192.168.13.37 8000
. My goal is now to be able to talk to the tcp echo server from my Mac (or any other computer on the same network), by running netcat (or equivalent command) from outside the VM. How can I do that? Currently, if I try running netcat with either the ip address of the VM network card, or the ip address specified when running the picotcp server (in this case it would be 192.168.13.37) it does not work.
Thank you so much! Also, let me know if you need more information from my current setup!

ncat --chat
option? How to send a string/text to a single client and not to the other clients.
Hi, I've tried different separator character syntaxes to send a string/text to a single client putting : :: . : :: between the client name and the message:
0) user5:string-0 # :
1) user5::string-1 # ::
2) user5.string-2 # .
3) :string-3 # :
4) ::string-4 # ::
But all other clients were receiving the string/text.
**NOTE:** the (0)
.. (4)
, just above in front of the commands is NOT part of the string/text. It's just for reference. The # is a comment and is NOT part of the string/text. It's just to clarify the character's used. Client and server real hostname is replaced by client-0.org TO client-4.org AND server. Client/server real IP's are replace by 255.255.255.251 TO 255.255.255.255.
I've tried the above separator characters : :: . : :: from BOTH the client AND server, but I'm getting the same result. Of coarse I could try each and every character on the keyboard combination.
Bellow is the output of 4 clients and server

from wherever I am.
For complicated reasons, I cannot use IM, email, or the telephone in order to contact her. (E.g. I don't want to wake the baby, my IM client is broken, my email server is down.) My only option is to ssh into alpha
remotely and try to somehow make something appear on the screen. She's using KDE; how can I make something pop up to get her attention and let her know I'm trying to communicate with her? I thought it was possible to remotely trigger something (like xmessage) to appear on her screen even though my SSH session doesn't have an X display.
EDIT: To clarify, my phone is not running any flavor of X, so X-over-ssh is not possible. Would the following work?
$ export DISPLAY=:0
$ xmessage "test"

Easy voice talk between 2 computers in 2 countries?

My plan is to enable 2 sets of unsophisticated users (children and their grandparents) in 2 different countries to talk easily. In practice I see it as:
1. A quiet Linux computer is on all the time in both places.
2. The user at one computer should be able to switch to an already
running application and call the other party in the other country.
3. The computer in the other country should ring.
4. The person in the other country hearing the ring, should be able to
answer the call. Again - nothing more complicated than pressing a
button in an application.
5. Video option is a bonus but not a must.
I unfortunately have little experience with VoIP. But I could do a fair job setting up firewalls as it might be necessary in such scenario. I am also used to various Linux distros. The question really is what applications could fit my purpose and if I must run a server (voip?) in one of the countries. As for users - less choice is better, if I could I would use this just for communication between these 2 "computer stations". Maybe even with telephone headsets :)
Many thanks for your suggestions.

. Now I wanted to try whether it works. So I created a testuser named foo. Then I logged in as this user and as my original user. I switched mesg
on both terminals to yes and then tried this on my originals user:
$talk foo
[Service connection established.]
[Checking for invitation on caller's machine]
[Checking for invitation on caller's machine]
[Checking for invitation on caller's machine]
[Checking for invitation on caller's machine]
[Checking for invitation on caller's machine]
[Checking for invitation on caller's machine]
And foo never gets a message like it is described in the manpage. I also checked that inetd
is running and enabled talkd
by inetd
. Here's the only line in /etc/inetd.conf
that isn't uncommented.:
talk stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/talkd talkd
I also tried to let both users try to talk to each other, but that didn't work either.
Does anyone know how I can get talk to work?

I am looking for an Open Source Voice Chat Application, like Skype, but within an isolated intranet (no Internet is available). Is there any application which can run on Scientific Linux or CentOS?
Client-Server will be OK, but our need is Client Based.
**Update:** As per Anonymous answer I have installed Ekiga. In two of Scientific Linux Terminal. These machines are in one network (same subnet), having 192.168.3.51 and 192.168.3.56.
When I open Ekiga, both users are visible online to each other in neighbours section. But when I am trying to make a call, message appears
And when I try to send a message, in message box, after sending a message this error appears:
NOTICE: Could not send message
While configuring I choose
I do not want to sign up for ekiga.net free service
I do not want to sign up for ekiga call out service
because Internet is NOT available to any of my Linux boxes.
Is there any configuration missing?
user is not available
.

I am looking for a chat application, which would have the ability to interact with a shell script. I need this for a home project.
**An example of usage**: A client sends a chat message to a server. It analyzes the incoming message and takes an action in the form of executing a (
bash
) script.
Initially the idea came from this wonderful article .
My case is similar, but I will not be using a modem, rather gnokii
or Gammu
/Wammu
with a mobile phone.
For the server I am using Debian Wheezy.
The clients should be able to use Windows, Linux (Debian in most cases) and Android.
Therefore ideally this system would use Skype - both for the chatting and for voice calls.
However, Microsoft has decided to drop the support on Skype APIs and that would make the job harder. I am also not very experienced with Delphi
and Python
, as there seem to be some APIs and libraries for those languages.
I have some background in C
, bash
and Perl
.
So, I considered using a bot in Skype like sevabot
, but have not tried that yet.
In addition, it is not very sure for how long Skype will have the existing APIs.
Another very nice option seems to be LinPhone
with all the above features available. I would need to figure out a bit deeper the interaction with linphonec
and linphonecsh
, but this software seems to be quite nice.
Other ideas that came are using Pidgin or any other chat client that could fulfill the above requirements.
Another option would be if I could get this idea realized in the form of a webpage. I have an Apache webserver on the Debian machine, which is running a small Wordpress site. But I think such a setup will be harder to do and not so efficient.
And finally, maybe one of the easiest options would be to use e-mail for such a communication. However, this would be not so streamlined and efficient.
I would appreciate all the ideas you may have.
Which is the most efficient, fast and long-lasting manner to accomplish this goal?

Quassel has both a distributed core-client as well as monolithic core+client IRC client. I am using the monolithic one.
[$] aptitude search quasse
i quassel - distributed IRC client - monolithic core+client
p quassel-client - distributed IRC client - client component
p quassel-client-kde4 - transitional package to quassel-client
p quassel-core - distributed IRC client - core component
i quassel-data - distributed IRC client - shared data
Now my question is, is there a way to tell
quassel
not to join a specific channel on a specific server while joining other channels (which is the default behaviour) of quassel. Is this possible, if yes, how?
My use-case is simple. While working I don't want any distractions, same is the case when not working.
