Having installed the latest version of Pidgin , how do I install the Skype plugin into Pidgin on Linux?

I want to open a Pidgin account. My OS is Scientific Linux 6 just in case that's an issue. I clicked on 'Add' and the first thing to select is Protocol. The contents of the list are: AIM,Bonjour,Facebook,Gadu-Gadu,GoogleTalk,GroupWise,ICQ,IRC,MSN,MXit, MySpaceIM,QQ,SIMPLE,Sametime,XMPP,Yahoo,Yahoo Japan,Zephyr. I use gmail but it is not on the dropdown list. I don't use anything else on that list. Which Protocol should I choose?

The reason: I'm also connecting to my Jabber account with another client from mobile smartphone (*aTalk*), and I'd like to set XMPP priority in pidgin, so that whenever I'm at my computer (where pidgin is running), it is [selected as the one which receives the messages](https://unix.stackexchange.com/q/163698/4319) people send to me, and whenever I'm away, the mobile client receives them (because there is more chance I'll see them on the mobile when I'm away). Where do I set XMPP priority in pidgin?

Is it possible to install apt-get on redhat? I'm under the impression that you can't, but I just wanted to be sure. If it is possible, life would be MUCH easier when installing various programs, especially because yum really doesn't have as many programs available it seems. Here's what I've tried (just for the record): I've been trying to install apt-get following these instructions, but redhat doesn't have dpkg, so I'm back to square 1. I am asking this question because I'm having some difficulty installing a plugin for pidgin (pidgin-sipe) because yum install libglib2.0-dev is failing, which is evidence to me that having apt-get might be a worthwhile investment. Any suggestions?

I played with the application settings of Pidgin and now Pidgin doesn't have any titlebar and frame. I did this with "Right Click on the title bar>More Actions>Special Application Settings>Appearance & Fixes>Checked No Titlebar and frame. How can I undo this? I tried right clicking the application from the taskbar (since I can't right click it on the application because it has no titlebar) but it doesn't show "More Actions".

There is a bug with Pidgin, where the certificate for gmail.com cannot be validated. The problem is discussed [here](https://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/17118) and there is also a solution: openssl s_client -showcerts -servername gmail.com -connect gmail.com:443 That outputs the certificate in terminal as it should, like [here](https://askubuntu.com/a/13838/47206) , but I don't know how to add that to Pidgin for a gmail account. I had no errors installing pidgin-latex via apt-get and pidgin runs fine before and after. The plugin is activated. The only problem I have is that (almost) every time a Latex message should be shown, instead the following message pops up and the text is not converted. I am running Debian 8 (Jessie). Pretty plain install except I'm running AwesomeWM, no desktop environment, and Gnome is pretty much nowhere to be seen. PulseAudio is setup with defaults. I use Pidgin as my instant messenger. I am currently using Clementine as my music player. When I receive a message via Pidgin, the sound it plays causes the volume of my music to change for the duration of the message and there is obvious distortion happening during the change back. I've tried to change the audio settings on Pidgin to no avail. How can I get Pidgin to play nicely with my audio configuration so that it doesn't change the volume of my music?

How does one compile and install Pidgin client and add Google Talk (~ Hangouts) into it on Linux? Not only it is possible, but with relatively high security.

How can I import an existing OTR key (i.e. from another Pidgin instance) into Pidgin (here version 2.10.9) with installed pidgin-otr plugin? I tried just copying ~/.purple/otr.private_key and ~/.purple/otr.fingerprints to the corresponding directory for the new user account, but there is no effect. Pidgin tries to generate a new key for the account.

A few years ago pidgin worked fine, but now I can't find one IM client that connects on Facebook.
