I am have come across my old computer in my attic. It is a very old windows 98 HP computer. I can give more specs if needed. I was wondering if I could install Damn Small Linux on a flash drive and boot to it and install it over the current operating system and run linux properly without an internet connection. Like what is there to do on a linux system without internet? will this be a good learning environment for me to familiarize myself with linux? Should/Could I possibly try to take apart the operating system and look into it. Another added on question is should I maybe run archlinux instead of DSL and temporarily connect to the internet to get that set up or is that too advanced for me and even that old of a computer. The reason that I cannot connect to the internet is because I am going to be hooking this computer up in my bedroom and the internet is in my parents room and I do not believe that this old of a system can run with wireless internet. However, I can temporarily connect via ethernet cable but not for long.

I'm running Damn Small Linux. When you open the command prompt, you are automatically logged in as the default user called

). How can I set a password for the default user called dsl
, so that when I open a command prompt, I have to enter a password?
I tried passwd dsl
but when I open the command terminal, I don't get prompted by a password.

My Win XP SP3 registry is corrupted(my own fault) so I need to move windows/repair/system to
windows/system32/config/system
. I have tried DSL, Sliax? and tinycore.
DSL give me a 'cannot - as readonly filesystem' So i try a chmod 777 /dev/hda1 and a chown 777 /dev/hda1
and a mount, -oremount, rw /mnt/hda1
none work although the remount rw does remove the readonly filesystem message but then just gives a cannot complete this operation. I am logged on as SU.
Sliax however shows the hda1 drive but wont even mount it, 'error org.freedesktop.hal. device.volume.unknownfairlure bracket' error
I also have this error written done, can't remember what I did to cause this one,
' wrong fs type bad option bad superblock on /dev/hda1 or too many mounted filesystems
unable to remove operatrion not permitted'
So basically how do I move a file from a NTFS filesystem (Win XP) from a live CD?

I'm using Damn Small Linux (or "DSL") (which is based "non-purely" on Debian - I have access to apt-get) in a Virtual Machine.
I installed telnet server (telnetd + xinetd).
I'm also running another Virtual Machine, this time with installed telnet client in it (Linux distribution AntiX).
When I'm connecting with telnet from AntiX to DSL, I'm prompted about login+password, which is ok.
But then, when I log-in it's just shows a message and then freezes. By "freezes" I mean:
1. I can type anything I want, but when I press ENTER the commands are not executed. Instead the cursor just moves to the next line.
2. The line "dsl@dsl$ " (which prompts for entering a command) does not show.
3. In the server side (DSL) the windows flash (close) when the login happens.
It seems like some process is running, but the problem is that it never stops. I have to type "Ctrl+C" to stop it and continue with the command line.
Here is a screenshot when it freezes:
There is also a warning in DSL's site which says that if you install the wrong application via apt-get, then you can break something, "for Instance the X server"? Could this be X server?
My questions are:
1. Can I find out which process is running? I'm intended here only to try and make it not start again.
2. Can I make this process not start upon telnet connection?
Logging in with root also reproduces the error.

**My question is if Pogoplug is able to run Linux, is it then possible to install Puppy Linux (or with live USB) with the graphical user interface?**
I ask this because I don't know if there is a graphics board inside.
Please excuse my lack of knowledge.
Thanks for your time.

I want to use a linux OS on my Nintendo DS Lite. Tried to use the DSLinux, but it turned the device into white and non-responsive screens! Went on IRC channel and got the advice to learn C and solve the DSLinux problem!!!. So the question here is how I can peacefully get an operating system that I can run on my DS lite.
The following steps created the error:
- Got the file dslinux.tgz from http://www.dslinux.org/builds/ .
- Unzipped the file and moved its folder into a SD card.
- Inserted the SD within R4SDHC adaptor card and turned on the DS.
- Went to its folder and chose the Linux Logo.
Then both screen went white.

Problem with path MTU discovery over pppd

I'm having an issue with pppd doing PPPoE on CentOS 6.3.
The CentOS system is a dedicated router/gateway which performs NAT (both directions) and various packet filtering. It has separate NICs for the LAN and Internet side, eth0 and eth1, respectively.
On the Internet side is a DSL modem. The modem likes doing everything itself, including NAT. In order to prevent it from doing so I have to give it invalid account info and then implement PPPoE on the CentOS system.
I had a problem when doing PPPoE on the CentOS system with Internet connectivity being very flaky. Clients could access some sites and not others, some web pages would half-load and then always stop at the same position, and TCP connections would often reset.
I've isolated this down to an MTU issue. I can get any given client system (all Windows) on the LAN side working fine by reducing its MTU down to 1492 from the standard 1500.
On the other hand, if I allow the modem to do PPPoE and NAT, enable IP and the DHCP client on eth1, and set my IP filtering script to route to eth1 instead of ppp0, clients work fine with their MTU set to 1500. (The problem with this config is that double NAT can impact performance and makes inbound connection routing trickier.)
Ping testing (with DF) reveals that the Internet-bound MTU is actually still limited to 1492, even though the clients don't need to be set as such.
It therefore seems that clients are normally doing path MTU discovery but that pppd (or perhaps NetFilter) is somehow getting in the way of it.
I normally have NetFilter (iptables) on the CentOS system set to drop all INPUT and OUTPUT traffic (since the system's only job is forwarding). I tried temporarily changing these policies to ACCEPT, in case path MTU discovery was depending on ICMP errors from it, but the problem remained.
I'm not at all experienced in PPPoE and am hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks!

How to configure ADSL connection using bash?
I know it's possible to configure the modem to automatically connect the internet using a browser, but I want to do it using bash. I would like the network to automatically connect when the system boots. I have a ADSL2 router/modem and I'm using the Debian 6 Squeeze.
