How do I refresh the Google calendar in Gnome?
I'm using Gnome 3.14 on Arch Linux. I'm fond of the calendar drop-down when you click on the time in the top panel. I've set up my Google calendar to show there, but if I happen to be offline when logging in, the calendar is not shown. Is there a way to manually refresh the Gnome calendar?

In earlier versions of Gnome this was not difficult to do, but it apparently has become impossible in recent versions. The "Maximus" extension doesn't work correctly for me (https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/354/maximus/) ; it makes the title bar narrower but doesn't remove it.
What are my options, if any, for making this work?

I tried running
ibus restart
on the terminal but it didn't seem to work. Actually, doing that broke the compose-key functionality completely and I had to restart the session again to fix it.

I would like to use
dmenu
as my launcher instead of the Gnome3-overlay that is displayed after hitting the super-key. From the Gnome3-overlay, I am able to launch both apps, gnome settings, and wine programs. In dmenu
, I am so far only able to launch apps, and I can't seem to find the gnome settings program or any of my wine apps.
When I tried other launcher, such as synapse
, they were able to find both the settings and wine apps, just like with the gnome-overlay. I prefer dmenu
because it is the fastest and most aesthetically pleasing launcher I have come across. Is there a way to include shortcuts to the gnome setting program and my wine apps in dmenu
?
I am using Antegros Linux with Gnome 3.22 and dmenu 0.1 (specifically, the dmenu2 package from the AUR).
---
### Update
For the gnome settings app, I figured out the name is gnome-control-center
although it is called "Settings" in the Gnome3-overlay window. Adding the -z
flag to dmenu helped by enabling fuzzy matching.
I also found out that the keyboard subsection of the settings menu is launched via gnome-control-center keyboard
, which is a little bothersome to type every time since it does not autocomplete.
It seems like dmenu
will find everything that I put on my $PATH
, but I am not super keen on including all the desktop shortcuts there. Other launchers such as p-menu
includes everything on $PATH
and all the .desktop
files on the system, which is the preferred behavior to me. p-menu
does only seem to launch within a terminal, rather than as a popup (the latter being faster for me), so for the time being, I am using albert
, which works great. I would still be interested in dmenu
or a similar launcher, if they include .desktop
-files.

Using a suggestion from https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/571537/138312 , I managed to do it using a terminal. **However**, if I put exactly the same commands into shortcuts (using a GUI, the only way I know), they don't work. Does anyone know the solution for this, or any other way around to have shortcuts for a touchpad?

I have a fresh installation of Gentoo to which I would like to add the Gnome desktop and the GDM display manager. Installing Gnome works, but installing GDM results in errors I am having a hard time to get usable knowledge out of. My question is simple. What must be done to have Gnome 3 start at boot together with GDM?
For installing Gnome I use this command:

And for trying to install GDM I use this command, which shows me errors with

This is the error I get:

My last attempt is letting it sit for 6 hours now. It's still stuck there.
What can I do?
Thanks and Regards
Edit1: I found this line. Does this have to do with this error?

I'm reposting Gnome Session Doesn't Start on Remote X Server , here, because I believe it's a
Gnome
question, not just an Ubuntu one.
I have an Ubuntu host, which I reach via ssh -Y
. The client is my macOS laptop, running XQuartz. I can do xclock
or other X
apps from the host and see them on my laptop. What I cannot run is gnome-session, which, as far as I understand, should be the whole thing that comes up when I login to the machine from the local console. DISPLAY is correctly set, but seems to be ignored.
Passing --display="$DISPLAY"
to gnome-session yields:
** (gnome-session-binary:5943): WARNING **: Unknown option --display=localhost:10.0
Indeed, my manpage for gnome-session doesn't mention --display, while manpages around Internet do. So, I guess, it was removed at some point, do I still have a way to do it?
I've also discovered that other gnome applications (e.g., gnome-software) have a --display
option, but they ignore it and the application runs on the console desktop, rather than on my laptop.

I am attempting to set up an AWS EC2 Debian 9 instance [using this image](https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/B073HW9SP3) .
I have the image up and running and can connect via VNC using 'tightvncserver'. My problem is exactly the same as described in [this Ubuntu Stack Exchange question](https://askubuntu.com/questions/898035/how-to-configure-vnc-server-to-get-full-gnome-desktop) . I can not seem to get Gnome desktop to display 'nicely' as it does on the [gnome website](https://www.gnome.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/featured-image@2x-1.png) .
Just like the Ubuntu question, when I load up the VNC connection I am faced with a grey background, a simple menu bar and originally no terminal option until I created a menu item for it following [this question](https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=280636) .
My
/home/username/.vnc/xstartup
is as follows:
#!/bin/sh
unset SESSION_MANAGER
unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS
startxfce4 &
[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
vncconfig -iconic &
xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
#x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
#x-window-manager &
# Fix to make GNOME work
export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1
/etc/X11/Xsession
gnome-panel &
gnome-settings-daemon &
metacity &
nautilus &
The question on Ubuntu Stack Exchange is very similar to mine; How do I correctly configure Gnome with VNC to display the nice Gnome desktop as per the Gnome site?
**Note:** I do not wish to use an application such as TeamViewer, however other terminal-only options are welcome as I need to be able to use a terminal on one machine to open the GUI of the EC2 instance, without installing software.

Increasing volume causes left/right channels to be unbalanced
In Gnome 3, I mapped my volume up to `amixer set Master 1000+`, and down to `amixer set Master 1000-`. This works just fine, as long as I spin the volume roller slowly. [![enter image description here][1]][2] If I am to spin it really quickly, the left and right channel become unbalanced. [

Today, I started having most web sites failing to load in browsers.
Checking my network settings, I discovered those strange settings in ipv6 tab:
Switching back to my usual dns for ipv6 (Google's one,

2001:4860:4860::8888
and 2001:4860:4860::8844
) solved my browsing issue.
But just to make sure, I then reopened the network settings: the same strange ipv4 addresses in my ipv6 dns configuration were back! Networking still works for now, but I fear the trouble will come back on next reboot.
The ipv4 tab has its expected settings.
The /etc/resolv.conf
file was pointing my isp own ipv6 dns server, I have removed them.
resolvconf
package is not installed.
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Wired connection 1
file looks fine.

nm-connection-editor
interface shows the right settings.
/etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf
file does not contain any supersede
.
Only the network configuration applet is wrong. I guess it is the network-manager-gnome
interface. Its version on my system is 0.9.10.0-2
according to synaptic.
My distribution is a Debian Jessie, unattended updates activated (stable channel of course, it would not be a Jessie anymore otherwise, backports enabled), using gnome.
I search a bit randomly in my hidden home folders if some local settings were related to networking just in case, but found nothing, including in ~/.gconf/
folder.
What else should I check for that issue please?
## Follow up:
Thanks sourcejedi,
So the bad display looks like a bug, ipv6 addresses being displayed here as ipv4, using only first four bytes of them. Maybe this is just a display bug. But redefining my settings as I have done would then have overwritten the actual cause of the trouble...
I have reboot now, things still works for now (with display bug still here). No clue what was the actual trouble.
(Emptying the resolv.conf
as I have done was undone at the next boot by the way, it was refilled with my isp ipv6 dns.)
Checking the nmap version on my system, it is 6.47-3+deb8u2
. But anyway, the old bug you found about it does not look related, just similar as you say.

When its OFF:
When its ON:
Its not detecting any nearby devices (nothing is rotating beside the "Devices" label).
BUT it (the PC) is being detected by my Samsung Phone's bluetooth but is unable to connect to it (not unusual).
I tried some other websites on the internet.
Accordingly,
When I ran

sudo rfkill list
,
Output:
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
1: hci0: Bluetooth

Also, sudo systemctl status bluetooth
, yielded

So, it does seem that bluetooth is working properly
#### What I tried:
Attempt 1:
1. sudo systemctl stop bluetooth
2. sudo systemctl start bluetooth
3. reboot
>> not working
Attempt 2:
1. sudo systemctl disable bluetooth
2. sudo systemctl enable bluetooth
3. reboot
>> no luck
Attempt 3:
1. sudo pacman -S blueman
2. **WORKS** well kinda...
With blueman, I have to press the search button to search for other devices and when it finds something, gnome-settings also gets updated (magically) with that but does not do any further detection...
Doesn't that solve my problem?
Ans: **Of course NOT!**
### How Should I get gnome-settings to detect other bluetooth devices in real time?
(I had a previous Arch install with GNOME like a month ago and it did not have this problem.)

I have one group/folder of applications in my applications Grid (Activities -> Launcher -> Show applications), called Utilities/Tools ("Utilitários"):
I like this and would like very much to group other programs together too, but could not find a way nor a tutorial to do so.
How to group applications on the grid, considering this is GNOME 3.32.2?

Using man gnome-control-center
, I found this for keyboard panel:
> You can open this panel on a specific tab by passing **typing** or **shortcuts** as extra argument.
But when I try gnome-control-center keyboard shortcuts
, it opens the same window (second screenshot)
I'm using GNOME 3.38.4, on Pop!_OS 21.04
