I'm running Fedora 41 Plasma (KDE). There is an issue I'm getting with various apps where, after installing one and successfully setting up a command via the KDE Menu Editor, after a while the command just stops working. So, **typing the designated name in the start menu brings up the app and when I press Enter the icon of the app shows up on the bar with a loading animation on top and then... nothing happens**.
Now, I don't think this happens straight away. I believe I get this after a while, I guess after an update or something. That said, the updates wouldn't necessarily affect any of those apps. Some of them are AppImages installed in opt, so it's not that the AppImage breaks or anything. Besides, ***if I run a terminal window and copy-paste the command** as specified in the KDE Menu Editor (pointing to the executable in /opt/ for example) for any of these apps, they run normally, as expected.*
Some of these apps include: Fish (which I often just invoke from the default terminal), Blender (installed as an AppImage).
I can live with this minor inconvenience, but an inconvenience it still remains. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Using kmenuedit on a KDE-Plasma 6.2.4 - KDE-FrameWorks 6.9.0 DeskTop in openSUSE Tumbleweed:
I have added a sub-menu entry (QT Tools) under the menu entry Development and cut from the Development entry all QT Applications and pasted in the QT Tools sub-menu of Development.
After saving, I select the application launcher surfing to the Development entry to find nothing has been updated or changed, not even the new sub-menu QT Tools is reflected. What am I doing so wrong here?
I've obviously missed the boat for I'm feeling wet behind my ears and more than slightly embarrassed.

Whenever I use the KDE menu editor to change the layout of the KDE application menu, the configuration file
~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu
changes.
This file seems to collect a lot of garbage every time an item is created, moved, changed, or deleted. It has now grown to over 100kB and is very confusing to read, and I am having trouble with menus that refuse to be renamed. There are still entries for applications I removed years ago.
Is there any way I can clean this file from unnecessary junk that's accumulated?
I don't want to delete it and start from scratch because it would be a lot of work to recreate my highly customized menus

Am I missing some tool or is there no menu editor actually built into LXQT/LXDE?

All menu & panel applications are missing in Mint 18.3 Cinnamon after adding a launcher

My 18.3 Cinnamon install ran flawlessly for two years until now. I'm running it on i7-7700 with 32GB of RAM. I have an application, Ultimaker_Cura_4.1.appimage, that sits on my desktop and runs fine, but I prefer to have things in my menu or panel. I decided to put a link to the .appimage in my Home folder and make what I believe to be called a "launcher" in the menu or panel -- either place is fine. I went online and found a process to do what I thought I wanted and did the following:
Right-clicked on Menu
Clicked on Configure
Open the Menu Editor
Created a new file (launcher?)
Entered a name in the first field
Entered a path to the application in the second field (Ultimaker_Cura_4.1)
Clicked out
I then couldn't see the new item on the panel or menu so I then tried to go back into the menu editor, but after right-clicking on the Menu and clicking on Configure, the Menu Editor no longer responded to a mouse click. Everything seemed OK other than that, so I restarted cinnamon (alt-F2, R, enter). When the menu came back, all my applications were missing. Now Cinnamon crashes immediately after I log in and refuses to start. In fallback mode everything seems OK, but I'd like to get all my menu-applications back. Clearly the last thing I did is crashing it somehow. Is there a way to undo my most recent menu/panel changes via the command line or a text editor?
Thanks in advance,
SM

I'm using Linux Mint 19.3 "Tricia" Cinnamon in French.
The taskbar menu has many programs already existing on fresh install, and I wanted to rename one of then, let's say the driver manager (French name: **Gestionnaire de pilotes**).
On the menu editor, I can find this program: its name is **Gestionnaire de pilotes**, but if I click "Properties", I can see that the name appears as **Driver Manager**, and if I change that name, nothing happens: the French name is still the same.
So, where can I find the *French* name of the driver manager in order to modify it?

Xfce: Why do changes made with menulibre or alacarte not show up in the startmenu

This question relates to a computer running Xubuntu 14.04 LTE. The start menu manager program is the whisker menu. (BTW: on another computer with Xubuntu 16.04 LTE I have a different start menu, there it is called Anwendungmenü but its logo looks similar to that of whiskermenu. **What are the file names of these two programs and where are they stored?**)
On this computer, both menulibre and alacarte are installed. They seem to work on the same data. A change made in menulibre shows up in alacarte, but it does not influence the whiskermenu which of course I want to do with it.
This is also true after logging out and logging in again.
I wanted to create a starter for
pwsafe %f
and I associated to it an icon which I had made as a png file from the logo on the start screen of pwsafe (Password Safe).
But the arrangement of starters in the shown whiskermenu did not reflect the changes I had made in menulibre and which also showed up in alacarte.
**What's wrong here and how do I effectively add a starter for pwsafe?**

Any ideas what's going on? (I have **no** experience in Java.)

When I try to remove
openjdk-7-jre-headless:i386
it also wants to remove default-jre-headless
. (Figured that might be conflicting with v8.)

For install an application from
.tar.gz
I follow this steps (I will take phpStorm as the example):
- Download the .tar.gz
file and uncompress under ~/apps
. After run this with the given example I end with this path: ~/apps/phpStorm
- Create a symlink for the executable in ~/bin
(so all the executables of each app ends there)
- Add ~/bin
to the $PATH
using the ~/.bashrc
file
Having that I am able to execute them from the console. Now I want to go beyond and add an icon on the menu and the desktop but I can't find a good docs for achieve this.
I have created a file under /home/reynierpm/.local/share/applications/.desktop-file
with the following content:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=phpStorm
Comment=PhpStorm is a PHP IDE that actually ‘gets’ your code. It supports PHP 5.3/5.4/5.5/5.6/7.0.
GenericName=PHP Editor
Exec=phpstorm
Icon=/home/reynierpm/apps/PhpStorm/bin/phpstorm.png
Type=Application
Categories=Development;
Encoding=UTF-8
Terminal=false
I found somewhere that this should be enough and a icon would appear on the menu but isn't showing up.
I know there is a GUI tool name Alacarte but I would like to go trough the hard way: console.
Can any help me to build the entry for the menu and the icon for the desktop for this app and possibly use the example as a template?
I am using Fedora 24.
