I'm trying to use Byobu on a Linux server via SSH from Windows. I've tried with MobaXterm and putty, but some of the F key combinations simply don't work. In MobaXterm there is even a dedicated Byobu terminal type setting, but the F5-F8 keys ignore the key combinations with Ctrl. I've listed the codes sent to the terminal with cat -v. The code for example **F6** is ^[[17~, but for **Ctrl+F6**, it sends the exact **same** code. Is there any terminal client for Windows that can send distinct codes for all F-keys with all modifiers (Ctrl, Alt, Shift)?

I connect from a Windows PC to a Linux PC with ssh using MobaXTerm. Within the ssh session, I have a tmux session with a few windows and panes. The ssh session will typically disconnect after a few hours of inactivity (I've tried toying with what looked like relevant keep-alive settings in MobaXTerm, but it's never worked). First-world problem: After starting a new ssh session and _reattaching to my existing tmux sessions_, the $DISPLAY variable will sometimes be set "incorrectly" - by which I mean, when I launch a GUI that uses X-Windows (e.g. Firefox), I'll get "cannot open display" error messages. E.g.:
$ firefox &
 23077
$ Unable to init server: Broadway display type not supported: localhost:11.0
Error: cannot open display: localhost:11.0

+  Exit 1                  firefox
$ echo $DISPLAY
localhost:11.0
Usually when I open a _new_ terminal, I'll get the updated/correct value of $DISPLAY - from this terminal, I'll be able to successfully launch X-Window-using GUIs. **Question: is there any way I can dynamically "update" the value of $DISPLAY in an _existing_ terminal (i.e. a terminal that's been alive since before the ssh disconnection)?** I.e. I'd like to try avoid having to launch a new terminal just for the purpose of getting/discovering the new value of $DISPLAY. I don't really have a solid understanding of what $DISPLAY represents - so I'd be grateful if someone could explain what it represents and does in the context of the described.

So I can elevate to root. the problem is that mobaxterm SFTP client doesn't have sufficient permissions to write to roots files. Any ideas and workaround for achieve the task?

I need to use Vim specifically commands like vimdiff but it is difficult to use since it doesn't use the color configuration highlighting that I set in my vimrc file. It is mostly just using plain white color text with a few colors and my vimrc file definitely works for sure when I use Vim on my Centos system locally.

I have several servers running Debian 10 or 11. I use Mobaxterm (Link ) for SSH into the servers to check the status of the services and the RAM usage. I notice that the > free --mega -t shows a amount of free RAM that differs from the one provided by the Mobaxterm (used RAM/total RAM in the red rectangle) in the bar on the bottom of the SSH windows. This is the situation: enter image description here Why Mobaxterm shows 0.64 Gb of RAM are used and the "free" shows 170 Mb are used? Which is the best way to check the used and the free RAM? Why there is this difference between the two methods? Thank you for the help!

After i restart the session and use 'jobs' why i cant see jobs running? Or how can I see it, possibly with job ids, thanks

I'm trying to configure zsh (.zshrc) in order to provide two different keystrokes, each one for a different action. While I need Backspace to just delete the previous character, control+backspace should be used to delete the whole previous word. Mu problem is that while I'm trying to capture the keystrokes codes via using ("Control+v" + keystroke), both seem to be the same '^H' So, is there any other way in order to capture and differentiate both keystrokes in my system? I made tests using both some virtual terminals like MobaXTerm, but I realized that it could be some tranlations inside the program, so I decided to make all the tests using the real console (directly via the vmware console).

I'm using meld to compare some files, on a machine running SLES 15 SP 1, and with the X server running on a Windows desktop; it's MobaXTerm 's embedded X server, which I believe is Cygwin'ish. For some reason, meld takes ~30 seconds create its window on the X server - even if no files are being compared and it's just the empty window. The same is true for gedit, for example. However, for apps like xclock, xterm or even say kile - the delay is very small - less than half a second. After coming up, the apps are pretty responsive, and this is all on a LAN, so it's not as though it's a communications problem (I'm pretty sure anyway). What could cause such delays, and what can I do to avoid or at least mitigate them? Naturally, I'll provide any additional information which might be useful to figure this out.

I want to upload files from my local computer to a remote server SSH through MobaXterm. I keep running into different issues that simply don't allow me to do this. I'm running Debian GNU/linux 10 (buster) I encountered a similar problem like OP in this thread . When using the drag and drop, the upload just stays at 0%. I've tried the suggestions changing the SSH-browser type under advanced SSH settings, to SCP(enhanced speed) and SCP (normal speed). Neither fixed it. If i change it to SFTP I get *"Permission denied"* when I try to drag and drop. I followed suggestions from this thread , using the scp command. However, I'm either doing something wrong when setting the path to the file i want to upload, or something else is wrong. **1. attempt**: I tried doing the scp command just using one file. I've done this using the method below, and also tried adding the full path to it, like I've done in my 2. attempt. scp file.wav root@IPaddress:/home/folder-i-want-to-upload-to/ **2. attempt** I then did it by defining the path of my local host path to the folder of files i want to upload. Doing it with and without -r scp -r /C:/Users/Name/Desktop/Folder-with-my-files-in root@IPaddress:/home/folder-i-want-to-upload-to/ scp /C:/Users/Name/Desktop/Folder-with-my-files-in root@IPaddress:/home/folder-i-want-to-upload-to/ Both attempts connect to my remote host, and asks for a password. Once I put that in, I just get this error: /C/Users/Name/Desktop/Folder-with-my-files-in: No such file or directory Same error happens for all my attempts. I can't work out what I'm doing wrong. Ideally I just want to do the drag and drop. I've run it all through root access. I can write to all folders.

I am using Mobaxterm to access cluster that is running on Bash. I have an absurd, but very annoying issue. * When I installed Mobaxterm, Tab completion would end the path with a / and if you press it again, it would list all files and subdirectories in that path. * I have no idea what happened, but now as soon as I type a directory name, Tab completion ends with a blank space instead by / which is extremely annoying if I wanted to navigate further down the directory tree. To clarify this issue by an example, let's say I have the following directory structure:
src
+-lib1
  +-file.cpp
  +-lib2
When I type nano src/lib1 and press Tab I am expecting autocomplete src/lib1/. Hitting Tab again would then list file.cpp. Instead what happens is that I get src/lib1 so I have to delete blank space, type / manually and only then would things work. I hope you can imagine how frustrating this is when navigating through loads of directories. Overall, I want bash to add trailing / after each path during autocompletion, any idea how to enable this?

I'm a Linux newbie. I'm playing around with Ubuntu Server 22 I've got a standard image spun up using AWS. I'm using MobaXTerm as my SSH client it has the facility to upload and create folders/files in the panel built into the application I believe through SFTP. I'm logging into the server with SSH with a secure key file as the ubuntu user. I'm only able to add/edit/delete files with this panel in the directory /home/ubuntu/ It's only me using this server and I'm wanting to add/edit and remove files quickly without using vim and other tools, it would be great to be able to use this facility across the entire filesystem but I'm getting the error permissions denied outside of the /home/ubuntu/ directory. How might I resolve this to allow the user `ubuntu' to add/remove files anywhere on the filesystem using this inbuilt facility in MobaXTerm which I think is using sFTP. I accept this is not the safest practice. enter image description here

Before, my terminal would show something like: (base)[username@login01 ~]$ Now all I see is (base). Note: I'm on my university's computing cluster, so I can't edit .bashrc (which seems like an answer from other posts). I can get it back using export PS1='[\u@\h \W]\$ ' but when I activate a conda environment, the problem arises again. Before I would see (environment_name)[username@login01 ~]$ but now I only see (environment_name).

When using MobaXTerm on Windows, I ssh into a Linux server, start vim and I can right-click into the terminal window and can choose Paste and it pastes text from the Windows clipboard. When I use git bash in Windows, this does not work. I do not see where in the toolchain I should set something to make this work with git bash. I have seen some posts that were about configuring vim on the Linux server, but the MobaXTerm example shows that it should work without deep hacking of vim. What configuration should I look into to make this work with git bash?
