He recently bought an Epson printer (ET-2785) and I have just installed the Epson Scan 2 utility; I noted the following issue: when I am logged in with my user and launch the Epson Scan 2 application through the classic 9-dot of the Gnome interface, it opens up and I am able to configure the scanning settings (output folder, dpi, quality of scan...) and start the scan; when he is logged with his credentials the Epson Scan 2 does not show up and I cannot understand if it is locked, failed or so. Please, consider that I do not start the application with the sudo command in the terminal, but I launch the application as any other software program, by clicking the application icon. The printer/scanner is seen by WiFi network, because I was not able to get the USB working (this is another weird issue). I looked already in the official user manual but nothing is mentioned about the matter. Was anyone in the same situation and was able to fix the problem. I strongly need some support. Thank you very much.

Continuing https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/795046/how-to-automatically-straighten-a-scanned-document-in-debian-linux , how to automatically vertically un-shear a scanned page? Sometimes a combination of an imprecise printing and an imprecise scanning results in the following layout of the text lines in the resulting image: sheared text You see a vertical shear here. All the text lines go down here; we sometimes see also all the text lines going up. (For privacy reasons, I can't share a real scan here. An artificially created shear can be found in https://ibb.co/DHYWrGYT – it's a shear of page 6 of *The TeXbook* by Donald Erwin Knuth, 2020.) Out of an image with the above text layout, we'd like to create an image with text lines going horizontally: unsheared text The un-shearing has to be done with freely available tools in Debian Linux with the least manual effort; ideally, this would boil down to calling a command that would determine the slope automatically, say, vertical_shear_fixer scan.png vertically_unsheared_scan.png. In this question, we assume for simplicity that all the text lines start at the same X value, i.e., that the original scan is not rotated and not horizontally sheared. (Rotating the original scan wouldn't solve the issue: for example, for the image above, rotating counterclockwise could somewhat straighten each text line (or black line) by itself but would introduce a horizontal shear, where the top text lines start more to the left than the bottom text lines; moreover, each letter could look tilted left a tiny bit.) We could start with gray images if it simplifies the matter.

I've installed a new Samsung CLX-3305W multifunction printer/scanner a couple of weeks ago on a dual boot system with W7 on one physical drive and Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit on a separate drive. The printer is connected via LAN, through a router and used as a network printer/scanner. Windows has no problems printing and scanning over the network however, Ubuntu will only print and won't see/recognize the scanner. I've been prowling relevant Linux forums for advice and a solution, but to date nothing worked. Ubuntu is updated and as far as I can tell, all relevant drivers are present together with sane-utils, libsane and libsane-extras. I also have Simple Scan and Xsane installed. I can get around this problem by scanning directly to a USB memory stick or booting into Windows every time I need to scan something, but not being able to scan directly to Ubuntu is driving me silly. Could someone please help me out?

I was investigating further an issue already reported here . The problem is: after having upgraded the **hplip** driver to **3.16.2**, the scanner in my all-in-one printer **HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw** does not work any longer (while the printer does). Today I found other oddities that seem specific to **hplip** rather than to **sane**, whereby this other post. I use **Ubuntu Linux 14.04 LTS**. In all that follows the device is connected and powered-on. The hplip page for that device is here . # Evidences # **a.** Moving on from the **sane** community page on Ubuntu , I followed the suggestion to run sudo hp-setup. The answer is warning: CUPSEXT could not be loaded. Please check HPLIP installation. **b.** If run hp-doctor, the welcome message is error: This distro (i.e ubuntu 14.04) is either deprecated or not yet supported. This sounds utterly odd to me, because the previous hplip did not dare to complain this far of the very same distro. The complete output of hp-doctor is available from here on Paste Ubuntu . **c.** Ever more puzzling, if I open the HP device manager, I am presented with the window enter image description here which seems a false statement to me, since the device works as a printer at the very least. If I click on Setup device... I get again the same dialogue window. And **CUPS** on localhost:631 indeed confirms that the printer is there ready to be found, nice and idle. # Questions # Is there a way to have the commands hp-setup and hp-doctor run smoothly so that I can fix the scanner issue down the line? If not, how do I downgrade the hplip driver to the previous stable version? Installing 3.16.2 has led to more havoc than joy.

Above, NNNNNN stands for an identifier composed of six digits and uppercase letters, which we chose to keep anonymous, and nnnnnn is the same identifier with the uppercase letters converted to lowercase. Only the last scanning attempt was successful; all the previous attempts were a loss of our time. Scanning via the escl: or USB interfaces works even rarer or not at all, so we don't use these. Why does the device name fluctuate: sometimes we have luck with airscan:e0:… and sometimes with airscan:e1:… (and I also recall airscan:w1:… in the output of scanimage -L, though I don't remember an error-free scan with it)? How to make the airscan:… device name stable or *always* get the right device name? Any stable aliases anywhere in the file system? Notice that the IP address may also change, e.g., when the router decides so or simply reboots. What does stay constant is the presence/absence of the scanner, its identifiers, and its connections: the USB physical connection, the identifier of the Wi-Fi network (not shown here), the scanner identifier NNNNNN, and the scanner identifier nnnnnn we use to access its Web interface from a Web browser via http://hpinnnnnn or https://hpinnnnnn . Also notice that a straight, non-loopy script that parses the output of scanimage -L and then feeds the extracted scanner name into the actual scanning command scanimage --device-name='airscan:…:HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e series [NNNNNN]' --output-file=… … still leaves the possibility that between the two commands, the device name changes (yes, it *does* happen in reality). Of course, we can put the two commands into a loop and retry on failure. As this consumes time (and already scanimage -L consumes many seconds), a better approach is needed.

I have installed the scangearmp2 tool to use my Canon Pixma TS5150 scanner and I managed to get it working. But unlike some screenshot I've seen it only provides a very crude interface. It can only scan the entire page in 300 dpi, no preview and no other options. From xsane I do get a preview but any attempt to select an area to scan is ignored. Resolution is listed only up to 300 dpi and it only uses 300 dpi as far as I can tell. Is this not (yet) supported for this scanner or am I doing something wrong? I am running Linux Mint 17 (Ubuntu 14.04). By mistake I installed the 32-bit OS but I assume this doesn't matter.

### Context I want to go paperless with a document scanner which I can operate without having to turn on my PC or use an app on my smartphone. Additionally, I want the scanned documents to end up in my paperless-ngx installation where they will be processed and included in my document backups. I've read multiple posts and watched videos of how to go paperless and they usually recommend document scanners with duplex ADF and network capabilities to scan directly into SMB shares. Based on my research, devices such as the Brother ADS-1700W/ADS-1800W or Fujitsu/Ricoh ScanSnap iX1600 support this. My planned budget for a scanner was below the price point of those scanners and I'm too impatient to wait for a good used or refurbished deal, so I was looking for workarounds. I was wondering whether I can use some kind of bridge/adapter/connector to achieve the same setup with a simpler scanner such as the ScanSnap iX1300 that can only scan directly to a USB attached device. I want to exclude the cloud capabilities of the iX1300 for now and look for a solution that works for even simpler scanners. ## Question Is it possible to use a document scanner that stores the documents on a USB mass storage device *and* those documents become available to another device? The scanner would write files to the USB attached device and those files end up in my home server for paperless-ngx and backups. ### Ideas I though about the following possible angles, but could not find enough information to test or implement a solution. Since the storage is only written from the scanner, it could be attached writable to the scanner and read-only to my home server without causing problems with file integrity. I found through a comment on an StackExchange question () the [SanDisk 32GB Connect Wireless Stick Flash Drive](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZCFYT5K) as a Wi-Fi-enabled USB stick. The stick seems to be discontinued though. Another product I found - the [My Passport Wireless Pro](https://www.westerndigital.com/en-ap/products/portable-drives/wd-my-passport-wireless-pro-hdd) - turns off the Wifi connection when attached via USB (from the user manual: "While connected to a computer, the drive's Wi-Fi is turned off."). It seems like I could possible simulate something similar via "Multifunction Composite Gadget" using USB OTG ()? That leads me to the idea of a dummy USB storage device where files are not stored directly on the stick, but only passed through to a network folder (SMB/CIFS/FTP/NFS/...). This seemed like a product which could be used in all kinds of contexts, but I wasn't able to find anything on it. I wouldn't mind using an additional device (e.g., RPi) and some syncing mechanism between the USB storage and a network folder, if that makes the setup possible.

Is it possible to integrate pdfsandwich into XSane? This command adds an OCR sandwiched plane to a scanned file (the option behind -lang is for German):
-lang deu -grayfilter file.pdf
Compared with other solutions, the generated pdf file is relatively small. Therefore I would like to integrate pdfsandwich into the XSane workflow. It would be best, if this becomes possible for multipage scanned pdf files too. The language should not be fixed once for all. Perhaps this might be achieved by changing the letters for the
-lang
option stored in some file which is read after a pdf file is OCRed after the file is scanned. If the question for the language has to be risen for each page separately, then it should be possible just to press RETURN to stay with the most recent value for
-lang
.

A document format for grey scanned pages with better lossless compression (i.e., a smaller file) than PDF+Zip?

I have page_1.pnm, …, page_6.pnm, which represent 6 pages of a scanned document, all in gray PNM produced by scanimage and manually postprocessed with GIMP. The command
-sh
convert $(for i in 1 2 3 4 5 6; do echo page_$i.pnm; done | xargs echo) -compress Zip -quality 100 document.hi-res.pdf
produced a PDF file of size 15620554 bytes, whereas
-sh
tar cvf document.hi-res.tar $(for i in $(seq 1 6); do echo page_$i.pnm; done| xargs echo)
xz -9 -e -vv document.hi-res.tar
produced a .tar.xz file of size 12385312 bytes, which is about 72 % of the PDF size. This means that there is enough superfluous information in the document that the PDF+Zip combination doesn't or can't remove. This raises the question: Is there a document format (for scanned stuff) for which Windows has a built-in viewer and Debian Linux has at least a standard, freely available viewer such that the documents in this format are generally smaller than PDFs without losing information? (Yes, I tried TIFF, and it was larger than PDF. I also produced a Postscript document with convert and then squeezed it via gzip --best, but the resulting .ps.gz file was even larger. I don't know how to produce usable DJVU documents from gray images in a lossless way. I don't know how to produce XPS files on Debian - GhostXPS/GhostPDL seems to have no package.) By the way, is there any shorter and more elegant way to produce
-sh
page_1.pnm page_2.pnm page_3.pnm page_4.pnm page_5.pnm file_6.pnm
than
-sh
$(for i in $(seq 1 6); do echo page_$i.pnm; done | xargs echo)
PS. I don't need lossy compression; if I allow myself to lose information, I'm pretty happy with
-sh
convert $(for i in $(seq 1 6); do echo page_$i.pnm; done | xargs echo) -compress JPEG2000 -quality 40 document.JPEG2000.40.pdf
(replace 40 with your choice until your file is small enough for your application). PPS. As opposed to https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/788404/in-imagemagick-how-to-create-a-pdf-file-from-an-image-with-the-best-flate-compr , in this question we are NOT (or at least not necessarily) interested in the best compression ratio for a single-page PDF+Zip but allow for many pages and a wider variety of compressors and formats.

(Here for the MX490 - this page of the manual seems identical https://ij.manual.canon/ij/webmanual/Manual/W/MX490%20series/EN/UG/ug_scanning0600.html) However, the software seems only to be available for Microsoft Windows: The 'scangearmp2' from https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/thierry-f/fork-michael-gruz/ubuntu/ does not seem to be able to find the scanner. With Xsane I can make it scan from the computer, but it is more convenient if I can simply select the type of scan on the scanner, press 'scan' and have the document saved on the computer. Right now I scan to USB-stick and move that. scanimage -L finds the scanner: ~~~ $ scanimage -L device `pixma:MX410_192.168.1.204' is a CANON Canon PIXMA MX410 multi-function peripheral device `airscan:w1:Canon MX410 series _0B203C000000' is a WSD Canon MX410 series _0B203C000000 ip=192.168.1.204 ~~~ Can I somehow make Ubuntu receive the scan via wifi?

Any solution?

I have taken home from the office a Canon MF443dw multifunction printer, but I have some hard time to get the scanner working. I have tried to get it working with both sane.d and Gnome Document Scanner, but without any success. I have tried to follow this guide SuperUser - How to use to a Canon Pixma scanner in GNU/Linux using sane, and over a local network, e.g. Wi-Fi? It's connected to the same network as the computer is. I can see in Wireshark that sane.d is trying to find a scanner both on subnet broadcast, global broadcast, and on the scanners IP address i provided in **pixma.conf** but without any respons from the scanner. Just to clearify, the scanners IP is 192.168.1.174. Is MF443dw not a pixma scanner? Do i use wrong protocol (bjnp://)? Do I need to enable something on the scanner? Or is there other tricks to get it working?

The scenario is: - latest Samba server (4.17.12) is running on Raspberry Pi 5 with Debian Bookworm - a Samba share is set up and other Linux and Windows machines on local network can access it - an old multi-function device is connected to this local network and needs to write scans to the Samba share The device cannot write to Samba share. Device's log shows wrong file name error.

Here my attempt: #!/bin/bash mydate="$(date +"%Y%m%d-%H%M%S")" image="$(scanimage --device "brother4:net1;dev0" --progress --verbose --resolution=600 -l 0 -t 0 -x 210 -y 297 --format=pdf)" ocrmypdf --deskew "$image" "$mydate".pdf The command, which works well, without creating a date specific filename is: scanimage --device "brother4:net1;dev0" --progress --verbose --resolution=600 -l 0 -t 0 -x 210 -y 297 --format=pdf > scan.pdf && ocrmypdf --deskew scan.pdf scan.pdf Since the OCR process takes some time, the filename containig the time (up to seconds) has to be stored at scantime, and then applied to the final file. Or maybe it is possible -- did not find how -- to pipe the file to ocrmypdf without naming it and then save the file with date and time informations.

I would like to install printer and scan drivers for Brother wireless printers on linux distro (no matter if dpkg or rpm based) without installer Brother supports ("Driver Install Tool"). Therefore I'd like to understand the installer to perform only necessary steps. Printer, scanner and fax drivers for Brother printers as well as the Driver Install Tool can be downloaded from their site (e.g. MFC-L2730DW ). I tried to read the installation script and it looks like it does at least: * install udev rules sample for Brother MFP (/etc/udev/rules.d/${number}-brother-libsane-type1-inst.rules) * install libusb-0.1-4 if not available * detect printer and scan * install some script dependencies (mawk for Debian) * in the end runs wget and dpkg -i --force-all (for Debian/Ubuntu based distros) or rpm -ihv --nodeps --replacefiles --replacepkgs (for rpm based distros) Could anybody describe what exactly the script does step by step? One can decide what are the necessary steps.

Can a Linux computer receive scanned images from a scanner using WSD (Web Services on Devices)? **Background:** At my work we have an Epson WP-4545 printer, and the printer part works fine from Linux, but for scanning, we can chose between "to usb-memory", or "to computer (WSD)", the 2nd option works fine with windows (borrowed a windows computer to try), but we Kubuntu and Gentoo. 2. Is there some program, or tool, that I can install to be able to receive image to the Linux computers, too? 3. Are there other names for WSD? googleing on WSD or "Web Services on Devices" didn't give much information at all. 4. Or, maybe there some other reasons for why I can't find any information, like copyright laws and patents?
