I have done one (whole disk, including home folder, even root folder) timeshift snapshot yesterday quickly, expecting an SSD failure soon. Well I did not expect it so soon, it happened today, SSD unresponsive. Is it please possible to somehow copy or rsync or whatever,.. the old home folder with keeping the original dates? If so, how? Thank you kindly in any case, not answering comments of type "timeshift is not backup" because I did not have time for a full disk image backup yesterday, and it happened so quick :(( Thanks again. I will review answers in the morning. Comments section: @1.Kusalananda: timeshift-gtk is a part of Linux Mint for ages, but I believe timeshift command-line is available to other distros without the GTK frontend. I honestly do not know the inner workings of it. And sadly I myself never used rsync at all on my own. With Timeshift, is there a way to include only a sub-directory?\ Example:\ Exclude **/var** but include **/var/lib/libvirt/images** I've tried some combinations but doesn't works!\ There is an example:\

I have a problem with installing linux on another SSD drive. The reason is i bought new ssd and i want to bring my current system with all settings and programs, and move it to the new drive. Steps i followed to reach this aim: 1. On my current drive created linux snapshot using Timeshift. 2. Saved this snapshot on USB Drive 3. Plugged in my new SSD drive 4. Installed clear linux on it 5. Using the USB found system snapshot, and started unpacking it on that SSD (or I don't now how to replace "unpacking" here. It means i was trying to apply all settings and programs on new system) 6. After this step, i rebooted my PC, and after long loading, i saw system emergency screen. Since this, i have been trying to run all commands: systemctl reboot, default or exit, and any of this commands brings me to the same screen. I opened a journal, and scrolling down found some orange code lines, which are possible errors, and way cause emergency mode. But at thus stage i really don't know what should I do. My main goal is to restore my previous linux settings on new SSD (as i was said before) I would really appreciate your suggestions and possible solutions for this situation!

I recently installed timeshift and set it to backup weekly. However, when I looked in /etc/cron.d, I only found timeshift-hourly which ran: 0 * * * * root timeshift --check --scripted which appears to check with timeshift if a backup is schedule and if so, do it. However, I would like to set a cron email for every time I backup and I'm guessing that if I set if for timeshift-hourly, then I will get an email every time that it checks every hour. How would I be able to set a cron email for every time that timeshift does a backup and not every time it checks to see if it's time to backup?

I am curious how Timeshift restores will work with my system configuration which includes UEFI and a BTRFS formatted system partition. First, here's some information about how my system is organized: OS: Mint 20.3 Kernel: 5.4.0-149-generic x86_64 Disk info: GPT with UEFI Partitions: /sda1: EFI system partition formatted with FAT32 mounted at /boot/efi /sda2: swap /sda3: System partition formatted with BTRFS with two subvolumes: @ mounted at / and @home mounted at /home *Note* Since BTRFS was not the default configuration, I read a guide about how to install Mint 20 with BTRFS and UEFI. I can't remember where I found the guide, unfortunately, so I can't link it here. The partitioning scheme above was the recommended layout. Bootloader: Grub2 Timeshift: configured to run with BTRFS; @home is excluded from the snapshots I have installed Mint on a virtual machine to test out some things, including Timeshift. I run Mint 20.3 and use Timeshift on my daily driver and I've been meaning to test out different restore scenarios in case I ever need them. I've been using various distributions, including Arch, so I'm fairly familiar with Linux and system administration. I'm not saying that to flex or anything; just to say that it's OK to get technical. **My question is how would Timeshift restores work given my configuration above?** From what I understand of BTRFS, since my EFI system partition is on a separate partition, it will not be included in the snapshots. That seems like it would be a problem because the ESP won't get restored. If I'm restoring a snapshot after a kernel update or even after an in-place OS upgrade, it seems like the fact that the ESP doesn't get restored would be a big problem. It seems like most of the documentation and use cases that I've seen in various places online either assume that the system is running BIOS or that everything, including all of the boot files, are all on the same partition. But, I see in the Timeshift ReadMe on its Github page that it says that UEFI systems are supported. As I've been searching around on the forums and the internet I've also seen that Timeshift has some options to restore GRUB. What I have not been able to find is any sort of recommendation about partitioning schemes which use BTRFS and UEFI and how to set up Timeshift so that restoring a snapshot "just works". So far, as a test, I did the following: 1. I made sure that I had a Timeshift snapshot and then I did a full system update which included a kernel update. 2. Then, as a test, I modified the text of /boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu/BOOTX64.CSV (I have done something like this before while testing something else so I know that it won't mess up Grub). - I wanted to have a modification in my ESP which I knew about so that I could tell whether or not Timeshift had restored anything. 3. I rebooted the machine to verify that the boot process worked and also so that the new kernel would be used. The machine came back up without any trouble. 4. I made sure that the ESP was mounted at /boot/efi and then I restored the snapshot that I took prior to the full system update and rebooted. - The machine came back up without any problems. 5. I checked the file at /boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu/BOOTX64.CSV and my modification was still present. 6. Once again, I made sure that the ESP was mounted at /boot/efi and I restored the automatic snapshot which was taken prior to the restore, rebooted, and checked the file and nothing had changed. - As a note, I never saw any dialogs in Timeshift about where to restore or about bootloader options like the user in [this post](https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=1990657#p1990657) saw. From what I understand of BTRFS and the way that snapshots work, what I'm seeing (and describing above) is expected behavior. It seems like other people are using Timeshift with a similar configuration but it seems like nobody is having any trouble with restores. Is their configuration different or are they not testing restores? Or maybe is it not a big deal that my ESP isn't getting restored by Timeshift? Alternatively, should I be reinstalling Grub after a Timeshift restore to make sure that Grub and the ESP get set up correctly?

In my home/, the folders **Desktop**, **Downloads**, **Public**, and **Templates** cannot be accessed anymore. Because I'm paranoid, I'd like Timeshift to take a snapshot immediately before updates are automatically installed. Currently I have daily snapshots, and choose to install updates manually, but I'd rather automate if possible. The Update Manager doesn't appear to have this option, nor does Timeshift, so I was wondering if there was any way I could either script it (I'm a scripting newbie) or if there's some hidden setting I could use to enable such a feature. I didn't see an option to set a time for automatic installation of updates, which would at least allow me to schedule it later than Timeshift. Thanks in advance!

I would like to automate Timeshift under Debian. All the snapshots should go into an external hard drive. When I plug in my external hard drive Timeshift should automatically decide in the background if it's necessary to do a snapshot or if the daily snapshot is already taken (I might plug in the external hard drive several times a day). I couldn't find any solution in the Timeshift-GUI and I guess there is no? Then I thought to set up all the Timeshift-Settings in the Timeshift-GUI (e.g. the schedule) and create a snapshot with those settigs via a bash-script. At this point I couldn't find any hint how to create a snapshot through the terminal which uses the settings which I set up in the Timeshift-GUI. I would like to use those settings, because there are easy and quick to set up and I don't need to care for any logic how to delete which snapshots to keep their number small. Do you have any ideas for that or a completely other workaround for my problem? In this article an easy solution for Back In Time is given. I'm not sure if I should use BIT for my system snapshots because everyone recommends Timeshift...

if you're using the live usb (this is specific to pop!_os 21.04, but i think it would apply to ubuntu etc) and you do a fresh reinstall, would you need to boot into the new system to get access to the newly created /etc/fstab file (and crypttab file?), and if not, how do you access it from the live usb after the fresh install? would you simply unencrypt the drive, mount, and then grab a copy there? or another way to go about it would be to use a copy of /etc/fstab (and /etc/crypttab ?) from a timeshift snapshot and edit it. then simply restore the edited /etc/fstab (and /etc/crypttab? ) with timeshift. this question is in response to the following answer: https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/636712/497219

So I have 3 different linux distros using the same partition to store backups using timeshift. 1. Arch linux 2. Arch linux 3. Ubuntu 20.04 I installed one of the arch linux a few days ago, and now after doing all the base setup to get me started, I finally setup the timeshift in the end. But the problem is that both the arch linux installations have the same name when opening the timeshift app. See the image. See, both the arch installations have the same entry under System. So, I just want a way to differentiate between the two installations of arch linux. So, what options have I got. All are rsync backups, if that makes any difference.

Timeshift can be configured to include Home in snapshots. That could potentially be harmful without the ability to do a partial restore. In the event you need to restore the OS from a weeks or months old snapshot, that would also restore obsolete versions of your documents. Including Home in the snapshot seems practical only if you can specify to not include Home in the restoration when that is undesirable. I haven't been able to find explicit documentation on doing that. The only apparent selection option for Timeshift restore is whether to restore to each original partition. The guidance doesn't explain what happens if you deselect a restoration destination. Timeshift can restore to partitions other than the original source. So deselecting a default destination like Home could mean a number of things: - Timeshift filters the restoration to exclude files from the deselected destination. - Timeshift goes through the motions of restoring those files to nowhere, producing harmless error conditions. - Timeshift restores those files into the root partition rather than what may have been a separate Home partition since Home is a root subdirectory (i.e., this option is more of a "where" selection than an "if" selection). **Question:** If Home is included in Timeshift snapshots, what is the procedure to restore root without restoring Home?
