My goal is to use the P2P wireless networking so the Xamarin editor can deploy on the Mac for development and testing As of the latest version of Big Sur the option to have a P2P network seems to have been removed, which is unfortunate since while at a hotel, I can't have these two laptops directly connect to each other (P2P routing between adjacent devices isn't working) on the Hotel wifi. Is there a Terminal option or some other idea to enable this?

This is a more precise reframing of questions https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/192077/no-secure-ad-hoc-network-with-yosemite (my use case) and https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/182760/how-to-create-a-password-protected-ad-hoc-network-on-yosemite (not applicable here). Background info: With Yosemite (Mac OS 10.10) Apple removed the option to setup a *password protected* ad-hoc network. However, *Internet Sharing* allows to setup a secure network to share an internet connection from another network interface. Now, the problem is that the *Internet Sharing* network does not work for my use case, since it fails to start up when there is no internet connection to share. Peeking in the console reveals this message: configd: no interface for external service id This means, there seems to be no longer a possibility to quickly but securely connect two devices without bringing an external router, unless someone knows a trick or pointers how to configure the Software Base Station, or dive deep down into network config, maybe using ifconfig, natd, ipfw like here: https://blog.netnerds.net/2012/07/os-x-how-to-setup-nat-on-lion-and-mountain-lion/

Before Yosemite, I was creating ad-hoc nets at my gigs and connecting my iPads to my iMac. It was relatively comfortable that I wouldn't have to worry about anyone screwing around with my systems, audio/video/DMX lighting. I am getting ready to do some gigs and while checking my system, I realized there is no longer a Create Network option on my Wi-Fi menu. And from what I'm reading here, it doesn't appear I can even create one. Is this correct?

So I wanted to use an ad-hoc network that uses both Linux and macOS. However, the macOS device says to be connected, but is not reachable. Network is created via the wireless hotbar on macOS or via iwconfig on linux. If the network is created on Linux with a WEP password, it is visible on macOS and when joining it on macOS a functional password field pops up. After filling it the right password, macOS says to be connected to the ad-hoc network. However, when connected, the macOS device is not reachable; it can't ping anybody else and nobody can ping it. So far, I tried - Manually setting my IP - Manually adding routes for the other IP's (sudo route add -host 192.168.0.2 -interface en1) - Manually enabling / disabling arp (ifconfig en1 arp)

I have an iPhone 5 (iOS 6.1.1) and I installed Viber messenger (version 2.2.2.86) which enables you to make phone calls over the internet. The messenger works perfectly when I use a wireless router to connect to the internet (which I don't have at home) but when I connect to my Windows XP ad-hoc network, I can't make phone calls. the call is dropped after 3 to 4 seconds and I can't receive calls either. This only happens on my ad-hoc network. - The computer connects to the internet through 3G modem - I tried updating to the latest version of Viber (2.3.1) from apple but no good - My friend has an older iPhone (probably 3G or 4) and he has the same exact version of Viber. When he tries to use my ad-hoc network, it works and he can call and receive calls. - I can't use my 3G sim card directly on my iPhone, I have to go through the ad-hoc network. What could be the problem and solution to this dilemma?

I am looking for something like the hostednetwork on Windows, which lets you create a wireless connection at the same time as being connected to another. I have a widespread enterprise wireless network, which, for security reasons, blocks all communication between devices on the network. However, in order to test mobile websites and such, I need my devices to connect to my MacBook Air. I can create a wireless network from the Wi-Fi menu, but that knocks me off the main wireless connection, so both my MacBook and my iPod have no internet. I used to be able to create a second wireless ad-hoc network in Windows that my devices could connect to, while my laptop would remain connected to the main wireless network, but I am unable to find a similar option in Mac. Is there any such feature in mac at all? If so, how can I use it? I am not against using the Terminal. Also, feel free to migrate to SuperUser if this may be a better fit there.

The Air is running Lion 10.7.2 and the iPhone is on iOS 5.0.1. When I create a network on the Mac I can join from the iPhone, but when I open "http://my-macbook-air/ " in Safari, it doesn't work. Strangely it doesn't seem to utilize the WiFi, as the indicator never appears (but shows connected in the Settings app). If I use a router it's very easy: they both connect to the router and then the Mac can log into the camera and see its image. I'd like to run on batteries and so I want to do away with the router. I've set up an ad hoc network with Create Network, and my IP Camera may be logging in, but I have no idea at what IP address. I've tried adr - a and ping 192.168.255.255 (because subnet mask is 255.255.0.0) but neither seem to work on an ad hoc network. Is their another builtin or add-on tool I could use? Thanks.

I came across a problem today when there was a speaker in my class. The speaker was from the industry and had a company provided laptop which was not able to get connected to University network (some other problem which I had to raise in another question). As a solution to the problem, I thought I would create the public Wi-Fi, using my MacBook Pro, without a password so that he can get connected directly. However I am a little embarrassed in not finding a option do so. Can anyone give me some solution if one exists.

So, I can't test this because my 6 is not hooked up to my phone line (otherwise I would). Before "closing as duplicate" know that this question DOES NOT ask "while I turned off cell data", so it's not a duplicate. Cell data is on, but has no reception. Can we form a wifi hotspot still? The reason being, apple does not give you access to high speed peer-to-peer. They indirectly do it through multipeer, and GK requires an internet connection so there's no real point in using it for p2p. Multipeer is slow, even for small text strings, huge (.33 seconds) lag. So basically, no bars, data turned on, wifi hotspot work to form a local area network? Thanks

In the past, (i.e. on Mavericks) I could create an ad-hoc wireless network from my mac, connect to it using my iPhone, and control the presentation using Apple's Keynote app. Unfortunately, with the advent of Yosemite, I find that the iOS Keynote app is now ridiculously flaky at connecting to Keynote through an ad-hoc network. Any suggestions/fixes to this problem? Thank you ahead of time!

I'm pretty sure I set up the ad hoc network correctly, it's broadcasting, and I can connect to the network on the mac. The catch is that the network shows up under the "Devices" part of the menu, rather than the main networks area. I can't browse to any websites, nor connect to the Windows box via samba. The IP assigned is a 169.254 one. Is there some setting somewhere that I missed to get this to work correctly? Do I need to manually set this up some how? Here are my network settings: Connection Woe

When I attempt to connect, everything seems to go fine on both ends, however after the connection is established the 3G icon is never replaced by the wifi icon, even though there is a check next to the connection in the wifi selection screen. wifi selection screen I have also attempted to create an ad hoc wifi network on my PowerBook, and have exactly the same issues. I have also tried putting the phone in Airplane mode, and then connecting to the network but the wifi bars never appear. I've tested this with a friends iPhone 4 and the same thing happens. I'm not attempting to share an internet connection over the ad hoc wifi network, my goal is to be able to control my netbook from my iPhone when I'm on the go and away from other wireless networks.

We are using the iPad to make an ad-hoc wireless connection to our proprietary device. DHCP is not available, so we are using addresses in the Auto-IP range. The user selects the device from the list of wireless networks on the iPad and about twenty seconds later, DHCP fails and an Auto-IP address is assigned. The device has a fixed IP address of 169.254.20.10. The problem we are having is that from time to time, the iPad loses it's ability to connect with the device. This issue appears to happen much quicker with the iPad 4th generation and iPad Mini. Usually a combination of switching to another wireless network on the iPad and then back to the ad-hoc network and/or turning Wi-Fi off then back on again fixes the issue, but sometimes the iPad needs to be restarted. When it gets in this state, the socket errors we receive in our app when we try to unicast to 169.254.20.10 or broadcast to 169.254.255.255 are either 'Host is down' or 'No route to host'. This is confirmed by using an app such as IT Tools to ping the device. Any ideas what might be going on or how we fix this issue?

I plan on purchasing 3 iPod Touches and I have an iPhone 4s and an iPad 1. Can these devices all participate in Home Sharing from iTunes (on Windows) in an *ad-hoc* wifi network? I have a test here with my iPhone 4s connected to an ad-hoc wifi network from my Windows machine (only several feet away from computer, certainly within the ad-hoc 30 ft. radius recommendation). iTunes appears to recognize the iPhone on the network as it does sync the phone, but sharing is enables on the very same itunes account. Problems: 1. The "Shared" option appears at most 25% of any given time, 2. When it does work, I am only able to see playlists (is this expected?), 3. In any given playlist for music (all songs purchased via itunes) only about 10% of them play, the remainder are skipped by iphone. 4. Those items that will list to be played (e.g. some video podcasts) will return with a dialog box of "Cannot Open". Shall I assume these sporadic (though apparently consistent) problems are **the result of an ad-hoc wifi network vs. a "real" wifi router network?**
