How can I set a custom ringtone on my iPhone without using GarageBand?

Apple has no guidance on how to do this without GarageBand. I've seen a few slightly different tutorials, none of which worked for me. The furthest I was able to get was like this: - Open the audio file (less than 40 seconds) in Apple Music for Mac and convert it to an AAC file. - Rename it from .m4a to .m4r to convert it to a ringtone file. This works for files less than 40 seconds because .m4a and .m4r use the same file format. - Some guides told me to drag the file into the "Tones" section of Apple Music, but this section does not appear for me. Instead, I dragged it from Finder onto my iPhone. - Sync the phone, which successfully added the song to my Apple Music library on my iPhone. - [People have reported](https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/431183/how-do-i-set-an-m4r-file-ringtone-i-airdropped-to-my-iphone-13) being able to select "Download All Purchased Tones" on their iPhone under Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone in order to make the file appear as an option. When I selected it, it did nothing except temporarily remove the option to download tones. Most guides suggest using a third-party tool, but I find this strange. If additional software *is* required, why do so many people claim that it isn't? I've been able to set custom ringtones through GarageBand with no issues, but it bugs me that I can't work out how to do it without. If anybody knows what GarageBand is doing under the hood when you make a ringtone, that would also be useful. If anybody has any information or tips they think are relevant, even if it doesn't solve the problem, please provide it. If it helps, I'm using iOS 18.4 and MacOS 11.7

How can I browse or search any alert tones (notification sounds, contrary to ringtones) in the official store other than those ~50 displayed up front?

When I open the "ringtone store" directly from inside the iPhone settings for ringtones, there is a special section available for alert tones, rather than ringtones (which will end up in the "alert tone" list in iOS if you purchase them, rather than in the ringtone list where ringtones will end up). But there are only around 50 such alert sounds listed there (and most are soundbits from contemporary movies and similar, rather than your classical alert and notification sounds), and I cannot for the life of me find any way to expand this list? To make things even worse, when using the search feature in this store, the results never contain any alert tones at all, only ringtones?! For a company that has seemingly locked down any possibility for users to add their own custom alert tones (or haven't they? ), this seems even more crazy, so I'd be super happy if someone would tell me that I'm just blind and/or stupid, and that there is after all an easy way to both browse and search for lots of more alert tones in Apple's "tone store"?

How do I set an .m4r file ringtone I airdropped to my iPhone 13?
I have an old .m4r file on my Macbook, which I used AirDrop to copy to my iPhone 13. There's no way to set it as my ringtone, however. In the ringtone settings page, it's not there, and if I go to the Files app I can open the .m4r file and even play it, but there's no option to "set as ringtone".

**UPDATE** : Changed the title of the question, since I realized that the current title is a bit misleading. I have: - iPhone 14 Pro Max running iOS 17.3 - Garage Band on the iPhone has version 2.3.15 I have on my MacBook an .m4r file (which I had created from a WAV file using the online converter www.zamzar.com), which I now want to use as ringtone on the iPhone. I already copied the file to iCloud Drive, and I can see and play the file on my iPhone. I found that this guide at fonetool.com supposedly describes the whole process. Basically, it requires that after having copyed the file to iCloud Drive, I need to use the Garage Band app on the iphone to make it suitable as ringtone file. The file is in the Downloads directory of iCloud Drive. Tapping on the file from the iPhone File Manager allows me to play the sound file, so to this point the .m4r file on the iPhone looks okay. Then the instruction say that for using it as ringtone, I should open Garage Band on the iPhone and tap on "TRACKS". However there is no _TRACKS_ to be seen after opening Garage Band. Actually, the starting screen on Garbage Band looks completely different from what has been posted in the fonetool.com guide which I linked above. Instead of seing on top of the sceen, my Garage Band app shows an iCloud Drive file browser after starting it up. Inside this browser, I *can* navigate to the Downloads directory, and I see there my .m4r file, but the is greyed out and can not be selected. What can I do now to get things done? Perhaps the guide at fonetool.com was written with a different Garage Band version in mind?

But can you set a custom tone for a *group of contacts*? (E.g. "family" or "workmates".) I think that would be handy—and quite *basic* functionality, so to speak—but I couldn't find a way to do this through the iPhone UI. Is it possible at all (without jailbreaking)?

I've been writing about this problem for the last year, I haven't figured it myself and I tried nearly everything. When I receive a call, there is like 33 % chance my phone will not ring. Or otherwise, it will start ring but after 1-2 seconds the ringtone cuts off. Here's a video I recorded myself:https://youtu.be/gbI8FriHJxI No matter what kind of call it's (phone call, whatsapp, skype, messenger), your melody will cut off after 2 seconds. I approximatelly miss every third call. **Well, this part is most interesting.** The problem first occured more than an year ago on my iPhone 12 pro. I bought 14 pro max later and the problem persisted. I bought another 14 pro max and I still have this problem. To be clear, I reinstalled system 3 times, I created new Apple ID to avoid the problem is on my iCloud. I turned all possible settings off. I still haven't figured where is the culprit. **But!** I noticed one thing. I am able to receive nearly all calls when I don't download any apps from App store. I also have to close all my background apps regularly (once or twice per day). **Second interesting thing:** The problem doesn not occur on iPhone 7. I tried to replicate this issue on my old iPhone but althought I was trying so hard I haven't replicated it. To make it clear, there is more of us having this problem but somehow we are not able to create one big topic to let Apple know about this... Either it's something with front camera which cuts off the ringtone or it's 3rd party app. I have no idea. I turned attention awareness off and true depth camera off. I tried to turn every possible thing off in settings. I am lost at this point and only solution left for me is to switch to android.

But I can't figure out where to put it. Apparently in Yosemite you could unlock access to this folder and put it here: + /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ToneLibrary.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Ringtones/ But I don't see any info on where to put it in Sierra. Any thoughts?

I have a very simple question about custom alert tones on iPhones, which there doesn't seem to be any good Google hits for: Is there **any possible way whatsoever** to install your own custom "alert tone" / notification signals (**not** ringtones!) on an iPhone? And when I say "your own custom", I do **not** mean purchasing alert tones from the Apple store, but rather, importing them from whatever audio you have in your iTunes library, or somewhere else. There are a **lot** of apps for making custom ringtones (including Garageband), but none of them seem to be able to save these as "alert tones" (notification tones) in iOS, but rather just ringtones. The problem with this is that most other apps that allow you to customize their notification sounds (e.g. Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp etc), only allow you to choose from the "alert tones" list in iOS, rather than the "ringtones" list, which makes this distinction critical indeed. There a lots and lots of tutorials and apps online that claim to be able to install custom alert tones / notification tones, but every single one that I have found end up installing a custom "ringtone" after all. :-( If the answer to my question is "no", an extra bonus question would be: Why on earth would Apple lock down such a feature?

Don't know if special ringtones could improve this and imho Apple should provide such ones. Are there special third party devices, which could help with this? I don't mean a new hearing aid device, but e.g. a bluetooth loudspeaker which runs all the time and can increase the sound if a call comes in. I know the [article](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210070) from Apple, but that isn't helping me exactly in this case. Is there a cheaper option than buying an Apple Watch?

I have an iPhone 5s. I want to have my own custom ringtone on my iPhone. But is there any way to do this without the (really time consuming) way of starting up computer, start iTunes, connect iPhone and sync the ringtone. And then set the ringtone as default. I am running Linux so iTunes does not work anyway it would on a windows computer. I connected my iPhone to my linux computer (elementary os). I saw a lot of directories which I do not see on a windows computer: - Books - Cloudassets - DCIM - Downloads - iTunes_Control - LoFiCloudAssets - PhotoData - Photos - Podcasts - Purchases - Radio - Recordings I was thinking if it might be possible to get my ringtone on my iphone using one of these directories... Is there a solution for this? I have read this question: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/81331/how-to-convert-my-music-to-ringtones-for-the-iphone-5 But the tutorial mentioned over there implies working with either a Mac or Windows computer and having iTunes. And I have also read this question: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/38063/can-i-add-a-custom-ringtone-to-my-iphone-without-syncing-to-itunes And a google search brought me a shenzhen iphone app which should be able to import a ringtone from dropbox but then still needs iTunes to sync the ringtone to my iPhone.

As of iTunes 12.7, Apple now advises manually adding custom ringtones to iPhone per their support article [here](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201593) . Apple's instruction is to drag and drop tones from Finder to the "Tones" section of my device in iTunes. This method works to *add* tones to my phone. However, I can't discern how to **remove** ringtones from my phone. - I've tried clicking the tones in iTunes and pressing delete, without and with various modifier keys. - I've checked the contextual menu under control-click (right-click) of the tones in iTunes. - I've tried dragging the tones out of iTunes. - I've poked around in iPhone settings and iTunes menubar and prefs. - I've tried deleting files from my Mac at ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Tones/ and re-syncing my iPhone. Any further ideas? Thank you.
