Old laptop "goes to sleep" all the time after Linux installation

I’ve installed antiX 19.3 recently on a 16-yro (or older), laptop. One issue I’ve been having is that the thing keeps going to sleep! Every 30-45 seconds or so, it goes into sleep mode; and comes back up on a keypress. This includes even the boot sequence: While running the init scripts for runlevel 5, this already happens once. It continues after my desktop environment (IceWM) has loaded. I've read this highly related question , and found a workaround: Completely disable ACPI and APM on the grub2 boot line for the kernel: acpi=off apm=off. But that’s not a good solution, because it is important for the laptop to go to sleep when unused; and you want fan speed control etc. Another suggestion there involve systemd facilities - but my distribution doesn't use systemd. What else can I do? Also, what could be the cause of this? Here's the repeating segment of my dmesg:

Notes: * I should mention that this did not happen with the Windows XP installation which the laptop used to have. * The laptop’s battery is almost dead, so I only run it with mains power plugged in. * I tried switching the kernel version from 4.9.something to 4.19.something (antix-packaged images); no effect. * Laptop info: Clevo M3CW, Pentium M 1.6GHz, 1 GB memory, 40GB HDD. Has a built-in CD which is giving me another kind of trouble that's probably unrelated.

The problem is that after the update Xubuntu boots only in command line regime. Xfce4 doesn't start. I think that new amdgpu module doesn't support my 11 year old videocard. In AntiX linux amdgpu works fine because there is 6.1 kernel while in Xubuntu there is 6.11 kernel.

I have an antix installation which has this problem, when I'm trying to use Alt Gr + 2, the terminal just outputs the number 2, leaving me without the @ special character. This happens the same to the other special characters requiring Alt Gr or Ctl Alt. When I do a dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration and restart the computer, I'm able to get the special characters, but randomly the problem gets back. With setupcon I can get it back but that's a little bit weird because when I power off or reboot the machine several times again the problem comes back. Another strange thing is that when I open the X server on the machine the keyboard is able to output the special characters without any configuration. So this looks like a terminal problem, could somebody give me some help please ? Antix is based on Debian so I can try to use some solution related to Debian. Contents of /etc/default/keyboard:
XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="es"
XKBVARIANT="winkeys" XKBOPTIONS="lv3:ralt_switch,terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
BACKSPACE="guess"

Onboard seems to recognize it, because it shows me the layout of the correct language but as soon as I klick on a button it switches back to English and the character it puts in is actually also from the English layout. What can I do?

Xorg: "Cannot run in framebuffer mode" infinite loop on boot and how to access a text interface before startx? [AntiX/Debian]

Upon rebooting my laptop today it appears to boot normally and then xorg is started. This immediately locks it into a loop where this message is displayed indefinitely. Cannot run in framebuffer mode. Please specify busIDs for all framebuffer devices - I would add the log file but stack exchange keeps reporting me as spam :( All the solutions I've come across so far consist of some combination of apt update(sometimes with backports), reinstall nvidia drivers, dist-upgrade to reset version headers, or run configure xorg. Unfortunately these all require a terminal if I understand correctly, and I've no idea how to get one. My grub menu has no recovery option, and I'm using a non-systemd Debian; but from my research, I've tried booting after hitting 'e' in grub, and then with the following parameters appended to the 'linux' line: 1, 3, recovery -- which all do nothing. single -- which gives me this error:
Cannot open access to console, the root account is locked.

See sulogin(8) man page for more details.

Press Enter to continue.
No I haven't messed with fstab, nor any system critical files, as far as I know. If there's an option to fix the xorg error without accessing a text interface, please let me know. Although I would also like to know how I'm even supposed to get a text interface, because that seems like a useful skill. Any help would be deeply appreciated, since I'm at a loss for what to try next. Thank you, Note: The distro I'm using is AntiX23 runit 64bit

I am now on a Debian-stable-based distribution that utilizes sysvinit and this script no longer works from cron. The theme changes when I manually execute it, though. Even specifying the display does not help: */10 * * * * DISPLAY=:0 ~/gnome-terminal/change-theme.sh I checked with dconf-editor and the ID is the same on Ubuntu 22.04, Debian Testing(trixie) and on Antix (based on Debian Stable). Why is it then that I cannot automate of changing the configuration on the latter two distros?

I am looking for a lightweight Linux distribution for development purposes on older hardware and considering GNU Guix (yes, I like lisp, functional programming, and reproducibility :D). My requirements are a system that is resource-efficient both in terms of memory and CPU usage. I'm planning to use EXWM (Emacs Window Manager) as my desktop environment, and here is my emacs config file , which is relatively modest. Could someone with experience in using GNU Guix, especially with EXWM, provide insights into its resource usage compared to other lightweight distributions like Puppy Linux, AntiX, Q4OS, Linux Lite, Mabox Linux, and Arch Linux? I am interested in metrics such as average RAM usage after boot, CPU load during typical development tasks, and responsiveness of the system. Any comparative insights or pointing towards benchmarks would be greatly appreciated.

How do I create a new locale, based on an existing locale and a different language?
I want to create an `en_IL.UTF-8` locale: Languages is English (US English if I need to be specific), but date, number, etc. as is common in Israel/Palestine. What do I need to do to make this happen? Note: In case it matters, the distribution is either Devuan Beowulf or antiX 19.3.

Who starts rox? i.e. where should I start it differently? 3. What is the pin board, and should it be "activated" at all? Note: I've seen some forum threads suggesting an increase to some startup delay; and people reporting mixed results with that. I'd like a proper solution please.

I've installed antiX Linux 19.3, and I want to change the file manager - for the first user and by default - to something other than the annoying rox (sorry, I just don't like it). So, I've installed pcmanfm, went to the Control Center pressed "Preferred application" and got a dialog with paths of .desktop file. Ok, so far so good. The file manager one is: deskto-p-defaults-follow-fm.desktop, suggesting the setting is actually taken from elsewhere. Now, that .desktop file runs:
desktop-defaults-run -fm --follow
there's a matching desktop-defaults-set, but - if I run that one, I get the dialog I saw before. So it's as though there's a recursion without anybody choosing a file manager. I then looked into desktop-defaults-run, and it seems to be looking for a file-manager-related .desktop file, which itself runs desktop-defaults-run -fm --follow. Unless I've mis-parsed the script (which I may have - it sources some more scripts when it starts). What's going on?

Under what circumstance would a device NOT show up even using lspci -M? Everybody I've talked to is convinced that can't be true, until I boot up on two different distress and literally SHOW them that on one it's there and the other, it's not. BTW, the two distributions in question are Antix (nothing shown) and MX (does show). Also Knoppix will show the device as well.

I'm trying to install antiX in a pretty old system. Compaq Presario 5000 to be precise. It is almost 20 years old and having 256 MB RAM and Pentium 3 processor on board. It's having Windows XP running currently. During the boot from the installation medium, I'm not getting GUI installer but CLI. I still completed the installation. Upon reboot after installation it still shows only command line interface. During boot up there is a failed step which is related to X11. Full Xorg.0.log is available here . Is it really possible to install antiX on this system? I was curious when I found antiX can run on 256 MB machines as well. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
