I'm trying to use Brother MFC-L2710DW multifunction printer/scanner with my Devuan ASCII machine (which is just like Debian Stretch but without systemd). At first, this seemed to work: I printed a couple of test pages, I scanned, life was good. (This was over wireless with a fixed IP address for the printer.) Now, a few days later, I'm trying to print again - and nothing gets printed! The notices which come up (I use Cinnamon, CUPS) say the job has been sent to the printer, and the queue is empty, but the printer says it's sleeping and does nothing. The printer responds to pinging to its IP address. It also manages to scan images just fine. I tried connecting the printer via USB, and supposedly this succeeded - but again, no pages come out. I used the printer's test print function (not through the computer), and that's fine too. Finally, I've now used my laptop (running Lubuntu 18.04) to test: Made the same installation, and a test page prints. What's going on and how can I get my Devuan system to print again? **Edit:** Still seeing this all the way to 2025. I often have to reinstall the printer driver, which often works; then the newly-reinstalled printer stops printing again after a while.

Unfortunately, I dismissed it before reading it, and now - I don't know what the maintainer wanted to tell me, nor which package it relates to ! :-( Is there a way I could bring up that changelog / notifications document, again? Notes: * You may assume I've not used apt again since this happened. * I'm using Devuan GNU/Linux Exaclibur, although that should probably not matter. apt version is: 2.9.33devuan1

I've gone over the script itself - the "templates" are not there; I've also looked through a couple of potential files it imports, also no luck, or perhaps I've missed something. My questions: * Where are those "distribution templates" actually located? * How can I add a template to suit my distribution?

At some point in the lifetime of my present Devuan (stable) installation, I edited an entry in /etc/init.d, in this specific case, /etc/init.d/halt. This may have been as early as Jesse or Beowulf, dist upgraded now to Daedalus via Chimaera. It has been a good while so I cannot recall but I may have used jed (my usual), nano or the mc editor. The thing is that, as a result, I ended up with two entries:
/etc/init.d/halt
/etc/init.d/halt~
At that time and thinking that the newly generated entry (obviously a backup) would just stay there, I left it at that. ie: by *stay there* I mean oblivious as to what was going on within the system and *not* taken into account.
~$ ls -1 /etc/init.d
--- snip ---
halt
--- snip ---
halt~
--- snip ---
~$
While I have a look at my log files every fortnight or so to see if I catch anything strange, I don't do the same with running services unless it is warranted. eg: something seems to be amiss or the latest CUPS/cups-browsed CVE thing which had everyone scrambling. So I had a look at and, to my surprise, found this:
~$ sudo service --status-all
--- snip ---
 [ - ] halt~ <- this is the *backup* file being loaded.
--- snip ---
~$
As I have explained, both files are present in /etc/init.d and have the same attributes. They also have the same size because, for testing purposes, I have edited the original file to reflect the contents of the backup file.
~$ ls -l /etc/init.d/halt
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1417 Sep 29 08:01 /etc/init.d/halt
~$
~$ ls -l /etc/init.d/halt~
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1417 Sep 28 07:56 /etc/init.d/halt~
~$
Can anyone tell me *why* the backup file is being loaded instead of the edited file? ie: /etc/init.d/halt~ instead of /etc/init.d/halt. What have I missed / done the *wrong* way? Where should I be looking?

Recently, I've been getting errors trying to browse content involving videos (yes, from the accursed social media sites, e.g. twitter) in browser windows. I get a gray area and the message: "No video with supported format and MIME type found". Now, first, I'm not even told what MIME type + format combinations _were_ found; how can I figure that out? And second - how can I stack up on more MIME+format combination support?

I would like a single daily email report of the exit codes of those jobs. Ideally the subject line will change if any of the exit codes are non-zero. My current thought is that I will turn these jobs into a single shell script which can collect the return codes and then send the email. Getting a single daily report from cron seems like a common requirement. Are there already tools or settings which will do this for me?

I want to install some Python package pandasql system-wide, on a Devuan (or Debian) system. It's in the Python Package Index, but - there doesn't seem to be a (dpkg) package for it; let's assume that there actually isn't. Now, if I try to pip install pandasql, I get a message suggesting I use a virtual environment:
× This environment is externally managed
╰─> To install Python packages system-wide, try apt install
python3-xyz, where xyz is the package you are trying to
    install.

If you wish to install a non-Debian-packaged Python package,
    create a virtual environment using python3 -m venv path/to/venv.
Then use path/to/venv/bin/python and path/to/venv/bin/pip. Make
    sure you have python3-full installed.

If you wish to install a non-Debian packaged Python application,
it may be easiest to use pipx install xyz, which will manage a
virtual environment for you. Make sure you have pipx installed.

    See /usr/share/doc/python3.11/README.venv for more information.
... but virtual environments are not what I want to do: I want to install foo system-wide. How can I do that? *Notes*: * If possible, please answer more generally than just regarding pandasql. * Devuan Excalibur (~= Debian Trixie), Python 3.11.6, x86_64 machine

I need to install a Linux system I will not provide support for, on an old laptop that's going to be donated. It has a Core Duo T3400 processor (2-core, 2.16 GHz), 4 GB of RAM, and a 320 GB HDD (and a noisy fan... ) If it were a 2 GB machine, I would probably install anti-X on it. But with 4 GB... would it be responsive enough and bear the load of a (64-bit) Devuan installation? And if so - shall I choose a more lightweight window manager, or will XFCE4 or Cinnamon be ok? PS - If you only have experience with Debian, that would also be acceptable as an answer.

How do I determine the apt package name for a given PyPI package?

Suppose I want to install a Python package system-wide on a Debian/Devuan system. Some PyPI packages have DEB packages available via the repository's apt sources, with package names prefixed by python3- (or python-, depending on Debian version). But - not all of them do. Now, I can always roll my own DEB package , but - how do I know whether my package of interest is: * actually missing; * available, but under another name (shorter form, longer-form, traditional name now changed on PyPI etc.); or * available, but bundled with other PyPI packages ? Is there a simple mapping rule, or someplace I could query with a PyPI package name and get the apt package name?

Let's make a jump in the past, coming back to the network configuration of the old ARM Chromebook model xe303c12. Today I've bought the "pugable usb to ethernet adapter" and yes,I think that it may work out of the box. Infact I can see that when plugged in,Linux is able to create the network adapter, called "enx8cae4cd6c871" (renamed to eth0) and the device is listed between the dmesg messages : # dmesg | grep eth0 [1.416705] ax88179_178a 4-1:1.0 eth0: register 'ax88179_178a' at usb-xhci-hcd.1.auto-1, ASIX AX88179 USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet, 8c:ae:4c:d6:c8:71 [3.773464] ax88179_178a 4-1:1.0 enx8cae4cd6c871: renamed from eth0 this is the /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Ethernet-eth0.nmconnection : [connection] id=Ethernet uuid=cef595d5-43d9-4ae3-b5d4-55920ebdee39 type=ethernet interface-name=eth0 [ethernet] mac-address=8C:AE:4C:D6:C8:71 [ipv4] method=auto [ipv6] addr-gen-mode=stable-privacy method=auto [proxy] Do you see some mistakes ? this is how looks eth0 : enx8cae4cd6c871: flags=4099 mtu 1500 ether 8c:ae:4c:d6:c8:71 txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet) RX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B) RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0 TX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B) TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0 I tried : # dhclient enx8cae4cd6c871 but an IP is not assigned and I'm not connected to the Internet using that adapter. It makes no difference to add this to /etc/network/interfaces or not : auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 (or enx8cae4cd6c871) iface eth0 (or enx8cae4cd6c871) inet dhcp you may consider useful to know this : # nmcli d s DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION mlan0 wifi collegato ziomario (connected) lo loopback connected (externally) lo (connected) p2p-dev-mlan0 wifi-p2p disconnesso -- (disconnected) enx8cae4cd6c871 ethernet non disponibile -- (not available) sit0 iptunnel non gestito -- (not managed)
