How do I burn a debian distribution ISO into a bootable disk using Fedora's command-line tools?

I've been a Fedora user "since forever" (Red Hat v1.1) but, frustrated by some issues I can't ignore, I am interested in trying both Debian and Ubuntu. Step zero was to download the latest releases. I picked Debian 12.7.0 as my first to try. However, in the past I was using a Windows box to burn DVDs for no good reason but familiarity. ... And thus I'd never had to actually burn the DVD on Linux before. Following the directions from various sources here, I started with: # wodim -v dev='/dev/sg2' -eject debian-12.7.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso Whir-whir-whir went the DVD with lots of progress reported but a cup of coffee or so later I got some errors pertaining to "fixating" the disk, namely: Fixating... Using man I found -fix, and tried it, but it didn't work either, as can be seen here - a VERY different kind of error: # wodim -v dev='/dev/sg2' -fix TOC Type: 1 = CD-ROM scsidev: '/dev/sg2' devname: '/dev/sg2' scsibus: -2 target: -2 lun: -2 Linux sg driver version: 3.5.36 Wodim version: 1.1.11 SCSI buffer size: 64512 wodim: Cannot do inquiry for CD/DVD-Recorder. Errno: 5 (Input/output error), test unit ready scsi sendcmd: fatal error CDB: 00 00 00 00 00 00 cmd finished after 0.000s timeout 40s So, I figured I'd try dd since several question/answer entries here strongly implied dd can make a bootable DVD, just watch out for sync issues, so, this: # dd if=debian-12.7.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso of=/dev/sg2 bs=4M && sync But... It doesn't do anything! And from that I did research and found this entry which says dd used to be able to do this and for some unknown but likely (in my view) silly reason, the ability was removed?! However, that is disputed. Hmmm... This system usually makes the cd/dvd drive available on /dev/cdrom and to read I do something like # mount /dev/cdrom /mounts/cd0 and then I have the contents available on /mounts/cd0. But trying /dev/cdrom didn't do anything either: # dd if=debian-12.7.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso of=/dev/cdrom bs=4M && sync No Joy. I've read several other entries on stack exchange sites, such as this one or this one , among others, but didn't find a solution... MAYBE I just had a media error and need to retry the original command? I hate to waste disks but... On suggestion, I tried: # wodim -v dev=/dev/sr0 -eject -sao debian-12.7.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso TOC Type: 1 = CD-ROM scsidev: '/dev/sr0' devname: '/dev/sr0' scsibus: -2 target: -2 lun: -2 Linux sg driver version: 3.5.27 Wodim version: 1.1.11 SCSI buffer size: 64512 wodim: Cannot do inquiry for CD/DVD-Recorder. Errno: 5 (Input/output error), test unit ready scsi sendcmd: fatal error CDB: 00 00 00 00 00 00 cmd finished after 0.000s timeout 200s Hmmm... There is a /dev/sr0 entry... **I WENT TO A DIFFERENT MACHINE...** Same operating system, same brand drive, etc, and I ran the command from the answer below and it wrote a disk. **IMPORTANTLY** along the way I noted the software - wodim - said: Set CDR_NODMATEST environment variable if device communication breaks or freezes immediately after that. Upon reading that I instantly deduced the drives MAY be the same brand (ASUS) but not the same type, or maybe there's a motherboard difference? I don't know. Since I had copied and pasted the entire output from the original "unfixated" run, I can say it wasn't in there. However, it was in this new SUCCESSFUL run - that boots propertly! - so ... Apparently what I needed to have found was maybe this article. Aren't computers fun?

I am trying to burn an Audio CD to be playable on old vintage CD Players.  I have tried using Brasero Audio CD and XfBurner, to no avail.  The resulting CD is playable only on some newer players. I have a CD (that I got from someone) which works.  So I analyzed it using cd-info. **This is the information about the working CD:** Disc mode is listed as: CD-DA CD-ROM Track List (1 - 20) #: MSF LSN Type Green? "name.ext" is not suitable for audio or video media. **I tested several files that should be suitable, but all create the above error.** Since the file I want to burn as Audio CD is sampled as 48000 Hz I used lame to convert that into a 44100 Hz highest quality mp3 because when in audacity-linux-3.2.1-x86_64 I set the sample rate to 44100 Hz but the exported .wav file still had 48000 Hz. lame --resample 44100 --preset extreme lamesh_11100_1.wav This is what ffprobe reports on that mp3 that I converted via lame mp3 with the above parameters: $ ffprobe -hide_banner lamesh_11100_1.mp3 Input #0, mp3, from 'lamesh_11100_1.mp3': Duration: 01:03:39.49, start: 0.025057, bitrate: 216 kb/s Stream #0:0: Audio: mp3, 44100 Hz, stereo, fltp, 216 kb/s Metadata: encoder : LAME3.100 Side data: replaygain: track gain - 0.500000, track peak - unknown, album gain - unknown, album peak - unknown, but still, brasero keeps insisting on "lamesh_11100_1.mp3" could not be opened. "lamesh_11100_1.mp3" is not suitable for audio or video media. Any ideas why that might be? Is some dependency missing or not working correct and brasero not tells me about this?

When starting K3b in Debian10/KDE (at version 18.08 there) I get this error: > Unable to find dvd+rw-format executable > K3b uses dvd+rw-format to format DVD-RWs and DVD+RWs. > Solution: Install the dvd+rw-tools package. The dvd+rw-tools is installed. I have found some very old reports of this from 2004 and 2008 so I thought it got fixed by now. How to fix this problem? I also had this error when trying to burn to a DVD: "Could not determine size of resulting image file." and: > mkisofs > \----------------------- >/usr/bin/genisoimage: Missing pathspec. >Usage: genisoimage [options] -o file directory ... in the debugging ouput. I solved this by making more space available for the /tmp directory. (It didn't say that there was too little disk space in the errors and I didn't get notified about disk space running out there.)

Can you burn .img files meant for USB drives to a DVD or CD and still expect it to boot?
I want to install Guix on one of my old computers, the place where I downloaded them is right [here][1] and its supposed to be on flashed on USB drives, but I'm wondering if I could burn it to a CD or DVD. [1]: https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/

If I insert the disc while on OS, the cdrom won't mount. Also if I open gparted it stays "scanning all devices..." forever. I've also noticed that the were mounted 3 discs or partions after burning the disc. if i run sudo mount /dev/sr0 the terminal stays waiting forever update: it shows this mounted discs or partitions but the cdrom/optical drive can't mount the dvd nor can be detected enter image description here Note: If i remove dvd this partitions stay mounted and accecible

Does Linux has a fundamental limitation about using multiple cd/dvd drives simultaneously?

I have two cd/dvd drives in my laptop. One is an external USB drive and the other is the SATA drive that came with it. And I can't burn two DVDs at the same time in both of them at full speed no matter what I do. First I tried running Wodim in two separate instances, reading the same file. Note the file is in a SSD, which can be read in speeds as great as 50 Mb/s easily. But that caused both dvd's to burn at an average speed of 1.5x while suffering constant buffer underruns. Then I copied the file to a separate media (an external HDD) and tried again to use two Wodim instances, but each one reading from a separate media. Didn't work. Then I tried downloading AnyBurn for windows and running it with wine. Anyburn can burn to multiple drives simultaneously. It worked, but again too slow, at speeds like 2x. Then by last I tested running AnyBurn in one drive and wodim in the other - Each one reading the files from different media. This time Wodim got to burn at 8x (top speed) and had no buffer underrun. But Anyburn was very slow and got an error mid-burn. Also, note both AnyBurn and Wodim work perfectly when running alone and burning to a single drive, with any of the 2 drives. The problem always comes when I try to burn in two drives at the same time. What is happening here? Thanks!

This is quite beneficial, since I can inspect the image before burning it to disk. Now, all I've seen, is how to use the growisofs command to burn something to DVD, but all how-to's were using ISO9660 for DVDs. But I want to burn UDF images. Before I can burn them, I need to make them, but how do I create UDF images? Also, If you could explain, or link on how to burn BluRay, that would be great, too. All tools must be command line, as I need to work with it, where GUI is no option.

I have a bunch of lossless files (.flac and .ape) that I would like to burn on a CD to listen to on any standard CD player (in my old car's for example), but I am unsure how to do it. Specifically I don't know if burning the files as an *Audio CD Project* in K3b will suffice, or if I have to do something different/extra. I have done my research and have found some post talking about a .cue file, however it is all a bit confusing and, in my case, unnecessary (I think) since I don't have a unified .flac CD but independent tracks already with their metadata. Can someone give me some info on how to create this audio CD?
