Error while trying to compile headers in Ubuntu Jammy Jellyfish

I am currently trying to compile the headers in Jammy Jellyfish, and I am running into the following error:

Before running the make command, I copied the old .config file /boot/config-5.15.0-25-generic into the .config file in /usr/src/linux-headers-5.15.0-25-generic/
I've seen a few posts where this error has been posted, but I have not seen any answers that fix the issue. If there is more information needed, please let me know.
Thanks

I'm trying to install amneziawg (wireguard) on VPS server with debian 11
When it starting I get this error
Starting WireGuard via wg-quick(8) for awg0...
[#] ip link add awg0 type amneziawg
RTNETLINK answers: Operation not supported
Unable to access interface: Protocol not supported
[#] ip link delete dev awg0
Cannot find device "awg0"
awg-quick@awg0.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
During installation there was one command I couldn't do
**sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)**:
E: Unable to locate package linux-headers-4.19.0
E: Couldn't find any package by glob 'linux-headers-4.19.0'
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'linux-headers-4.19.0'
(I did reboot)
Some commands I've tried:
**sudo modprobe amneziawg**:
modprobe: FATAL: Module amneziawg not found in directory /lib/modules/4.19.0
**uname -a**:
Linux example.com 4.19.0 #1 SMP Wed Jul 12 12:00:44 MSK 2023 x86_64 GNU/Linux
**dir /lib/modules/**:
4.19.0 5.10.0-33-amd64 5.10.0-33-rt-amd64
**sudo apt-get install linux-headers-5.10.0-33-amd64**:
linux-headers-5.10.0-33-amd64 is already the newest version (5.10.226-1).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
As you might have guessed, I have no idea what I'm doing or how to resolve this issue.
It seems to me that problem is with 4.19.0 modules folder
Can I somehow switch it to 5.10.0 version if it's NAT VPS service?
It probably has one kernel for every virtual server or something like that...
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
reboot
Doesn't do anything
**What do I do? Any suggestions are welcome.**

(as also a third, cleaner one, linux-headers-gcp
)

I'm trying to write my own pci-device driver on an Ubuntu system.
The example I found says that I need:
#include
#include
#include
I'm using Qt and it underlines the first
include
as a mistake.
When I put the mouse cursor under the 2nd or 3rd line, it shows me a tip: /usr/include/linux/module.h
or /usr/include/linux/pci.h
, so I opened /usr/include/linux
in file explorer, and there is no init.h
.
I ran sudo apt install linux-headers-generic
but it didn't help.
locate linux/init.h
gives:
/usr/src/linux-headers-5.15.0-121/include/linux/init.h
/usr/src/linux-headers-5.15.0-122/include/linux/init.h
/usr/src/linux-headers-5.15.0-43/include/linux/init.h
So is my problem that I have to add something to my PATH
or do I have to install something else?
Yes, I've seen a lot of topics about people having problems with compiling something because of linux/init.h: no such file or directory
, but I am not compiling, I can't even include it.

I'm using an Archer T2U v3 on my Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 system and on a Linux Mint system based on these Ubuntu versions. It works flawlessly with the driver directly provided by TP-Link from [their website](https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/download/archer-t2u/#Driver) (with kernel version 2.6.18~5.0).
Following [the installation guide](https://static.tp-link.com/2018/201812/20181207/Installation%20Guide%20for%20Linux.pdf) , I just had to run
make
to compile their driver and load it using sudo insmod 88x2bu.ko
.
Recently I upgraded my system and found that the make
command doesn't work from Ubuntu 18.04 onward; it says make
should be installed first.
So I did some research and have already gone through these links:
* TP-Link AC600 Archer T2U Nano driver for Ubuntu 18.04
* Need rtl8814au driver for kernel 5.3 on Ubuntu 19.10
* Archer T2U Plus driver for Linux Ubuntu/Rasbian
* RTL8812AU/21AU and RTL8814AU Wireless drivers for Linux
According to these I'll have to execute these commands:
sudo apt install git dkms
git clone https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8812au.git
cd rtl8812au
sudo make dkms_install
There is a problem: I cannot access the Internet directly on this PC even through USB tethering (mobile is not allowed in the workplace). Can I somehow install these packages (dkms
, git
, build-essential
, linux-headers
) from another working machine on this machine? Can I install those packages in offline mode?

How to defer kernel updates until the corresponding "linux-headers" package is available?

I'm using Debian 12 Bookworm, and currently, when I run
-a
, it shows:
Linux pctxd 6.1.0-20-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.85-1 (2024-04-11) x86_64 GNU/Linux
The package linux-image-6.1.0-21-amd64 and related packages are ready to install. However, the corresponding linux-headers-6.1.0-21-amd64 package is not available. Without these headers, the Nvidia drivers can't be compiled, rendering the graphical user interface non-functional—something I learned the hard way during the last upgrade to 6.1.85-1.
Running aptitude show yields:
Package: linux-image-6.1.0-21-amd64
Version: 6.1.90-1
New: yes
State: not installed
Priority: optional
Section: kernel
Maintainer: Debian Kernel Team
Architecture: amd64
Uncompressed Size: 408 M
Depends: kmod, linux-base (>= 4.3~), initramfs-tools (>= 0.120+deb8u2) | linux-initramfs-tool
Recommends: firmware-linux-free, apparmor
Suggests: linux-doc-6.1, debian-kernel-handbook, grub-pc | grub-efi-amd64 | extlinux
Conflicts: linux-image-6.1.0-21-amd64-unsigned
Breaks: fwupdate (< 12-7), initramfs-tools (< 0.120+deb8u2), wireless-regdb (< 2019.06.03-1~)
Replaces: linux-image-6.1.0-21-amd64-unsigned
Provides: $kernel (= 6.1.90-1)
Just now, web page Package: linux-headers-6.1.0-21-amd64 seems to describe the missing package, but clicking the “list of files” button results in a error page with the information “No such package in this suite on this architecture.”
Currently, there is another Security update (regarding libglib2.0) waiting. So, the time lag between the kernel security update and the linux header files necessary for my graphic UI is a increasing risk.
For future updates: Is there a way to automatically defer the kernel update until the linux-headers package is available but process the security updates of other packages?

I have run that, and gotten the following:

vboxdrv.sh: Stopping VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Starting VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Building VirtualBox kernel modules.
This system is currently not set up to build kernel modules.

There were problems setting up VirtualBox. To re-start the set-up process, run
/sbin/vboxconfig
as root. If your system is using EFI Secure Boot you may need to sign the
kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, vboxnetadp, vboxpci) before you can load
them. Please see your Linux system's documentation for more information.
That's where I'm stuck. Yay says my linux-headers
package is up-to-date, and I'm not sure how to sign kernel modules or what that means.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Am currently running POP_OS 20.04 (LTS). When I open the terminal and run the command,
dpkg --list | grep linux-image
it returns a list of apparently installed images, including my current (6.0.12) and most recent (5.17.5), about nine images from version set 5.0 and six from version set 5.3 ...plus one from 4.18 and one from 5.4.
Previously I have used synaptic to remove older kernels from the system, but for some reason when I search for linux-image (and sort installed images to the top) only my current and most recent are showing as installed ~ the box is green. These older 5.0/5.3 images don't show in the search results.
Stacer uninstaller also cannot find them.
Can anyone tell me why these images show in the console but not synaptic? What are they doing on the system and are they even really on the system? If they are indeed taking up space on my home partition **how can I safely remove them**?
One consideration comes to mind is this system started out at POP_OS version 18.10 and has been upgraded with each release up to 20.04 (LTS) -- *although not sure if that has anything to do with it*. Another thought is maybe this has something to do with the recovery partition, but I have no idea how or why it would need so many versions of the kernel, or why they would accumulate in such untidy manner.

This created the below structure:
/lib/modules/5.10.110$ ls -la

Now I had to recompile the whole kernel and version is increased from 5.10.110 to **5.10.160**.
So now, when I try to compile a kernel module it is not finding the required headers.
Build folder contains these files in 5.10.110:
/lib/modules/5.10.110/build$ ls -la
total 1364

drwxr-xr-x 31 root root 4096 Apr 29 15:03 include
drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 12288 Apr 29 15:03 scripts
How can I recreate these headers for building custom kernel modules against my new kernel of version 5.10.160?
I made various trials: copying these folders from my computer where I cross-compiled the kernel: not working, as "scripts" folder contains machine code (x86_64) which is not executing on aarch64.
Then I copied "scripts" folder from 5.10.110, but I'm unsure if it's okay, or will cause harm or unwanted results.
So how could I cross-compile the environment for building custom kernel modules?

But, what I've read, in a post like [this](https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/663183/how-does-kernel-version-correlate-with-a-linux-release-version) , the kernel version should be 3.10.xxxx. This can be also confirmed from the wikipedia.
I have run yum install kernel-devel
and in my /usr/src/kernels/
directory, I see
$ ls /usr/src/kernels/

So my question is why does uname -r show something different than the supported kernel version by centos? What is the difference here.
