How can I prevent other applications from stealing focus from the active window? I have found solutions for other window managers, but nothing for "Metacity (Marco)" (the window manager of the MATE desktop manager). I don't want to have to specify every time which window must be "always on top", unless it can be done automatically every time I switch to a new window. I have determined the window manager by running wmctrl -m. EDIT: I have tried switching the focus-new-windows flag from smart to strict for both Gnome and Mate(Marco): $ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-new-windows strict $ gsettings set org.mate.Marco.general focus-new-windows strict But it didn't work.

In the Linux Mint Xfce4 Settings-Manager, the "Desktop Settings" settings is available, but in the Arch Linux Xfce4 Settings-Manager, it isn't. I want the "Desktop Settings" settings, using which I can change my windows-manager to either 'Metacity+Compositing' or only 'Metacity', because the theme I select in "Appearence" settings doesn't gets applied to apps like Thunar or XFCE Terminal if I use the default xfwm4 theme, which makes the gui inconsistent (As a temporary fix, I've to look for matching xfwm4 themes online). But when I use 'Metacity' or 'Metacity+Compositing', all the windows, irrespective of being GTK or QT, uses the same theme, configured in the "Appearence" settings. Also: I've installed Metacity using Pacman, but couldn't find it listed under the startup applications in "Session and Startup" settings. The theme i want to apply is the in-built Adwaita-GTK(2,3) theme, but I couldn't find any similar matching xfwm4 theme. So, is there any way to apply 'Metacity' or 'Metacity+Compositing' with or without the "Desktop Settings" settings. In Xfce we can change the window manager in Desktop Settings from Xfwm4 to Metacity. But then **the system GTK theme is not followed**, because Metacity has its own theming settings. **That system theme includes a metacity folder**. I expected that setting to be accessible with gsettings/Dconf, but it is not followed, and is marked as deprecated. **How to set the Metacity window theme in Xfce?** --- metacity 3.28.0 Xfce 4.12

My goal is to remove the dropshadow from all metacity windows. I realize there is not a setting to do this and I may need to recompile metacity. If I can simply do it by editing source files without compiling, an ideas where I can start on that?

I would like to have a keyboard shortcut to "go to" (focus + raise) window with URGENT flag set which looks like URGENT: it appears on the taskbar (Gnome + Metacity) even if it is on desktop other than current and starts to blink (thanks to @slm for pointing it out). This window might be on other virtual desktop than current. In this particular case it is Skype windows which set urgency flag, and so they appear in alt-tab popup (metacity WM) but I can't switch to this window if it is not on current virtual desktop. I've been trying to get a fully embedded terminal sitting on my desktop. After searching around for some tips I finally almost have it: xfce4-terminal --hide-menubar --hide-borders --hide-toolbars --title=dt --working-directory /root & sleep 1 wmctrl -r dt -e 0,200,200,500,500 & wmctrl -r dt -b add,sticky,below & wmctrl -r dt -b add,skip_pager,skip_taskbar & It keeps a terminal without borders etc. constantly below everything else. It also doesn't appear in taskbar etc. My only problem is that I have a habit a using my "Hide all windows" shortcut quite a lot, and that still hides the embedded terminal, which kinda beats the purpose. Any suggestions to make an "un-hideable" terminal window? Hackish stuff welcome. EDIT: My first thought was to replace Gnome's "hide all windows" with my own bash script that would hide all windows and then immediately re-show the terminal using wmctrl. From the docs: wmctrl -r dt -b toggle,hidden should work, however it doesn't. Looking on the net it appears that it's a confirmed bug, it doesn't work now and wmctrl hasn't been updated in two years meaning it's unlikely to ever get fixed. *(NB: I use Debian, Gnome, Metacity and Compton composite manager)*

I have installed many Cinnamon themes but those listed under Desktop affect mostly the Panel, not the windows texture: The window frame is set under Windows Borders, but what I am interested in is the theme under Controls. I know that themes are categorized as GTK, Metacity etc. Which is which in Cinnamon? Windows=? Controls=? Desktop=?

I am troubleshooting this GUI application running multiple windows, some of which are small and made explicitly to stay on top of the main window (which usually stays on the first display scree). The problem is, as soon as i take the cursor to the second display screen , the window (which is supposed to stay on top) hides , and i have to (ALT-TAB) to retrieve it. This problem has nothing to do with GUI application, this rather has to do with window management, because when i open a terminal window on top of the main window , as soon as i take the cursor to the second display window, the terminal window hides. I heard that Metacity has some fix to this ? Is there a way to write a bash script to handle this issue, i just don't know how to start ?

For about 15 years I have assigned a workspace to each function key (F1-F10) in whichever Linux/X environment I'm using. Yesterday I ran a normal software update on my work Ubuntu box and now, although I can still use ccsm to assign those keys to the Viewport Switcher it has no effect unless I also assign some modifier such as alt-, which is very annoying. (I'm using metacity on 14.04). Does anyone know what might have changed in the last couple of weeks? I had been on holiday so the update was quite large. More importantly, how do I fix it?

I need to have some applications running on specific workspaces on gnome and have the option (Always on visible workspace) ticked and remembered each time I'm loggin out. Is this possible?

I'd like to run some applications in fullscreen. Even though they don't have an explicit such option, it is possible with the metacity Alt-F11 command. So, I thought I could create such an input like this: full.txt: KeyStrPress Alt_L KeyStrPress F11 KeyStrRelease F11 KeyStrRelease Alt_L and then: xmacroplay "$DISPLAY" < full.txt (in my case, the same as xmacroplay :0.0 < full.txt) But, it works in the terminal where it is run. How do I send it to the stdin of some other process? **Edit**: I found a better way to do this: wmctrl -r urxvt -b toggle,fullscreen (for urxvt). I am getting annoyed by windows under X opening and taking focus away from the current window which has focus. This is particularly annoying when you are typing a password into a password dialog and another application steals focus, so some of your keystrokes end up in the new application instead. I've always been irritated by this in Windows, but there's little that can be done about it there, and I can't help but feel that this should be fixable on Unix. I'm currently using Gnome as my desktop environment (on RHEL 5.8) and according to wmctrl -m I'm currently using Metacity as my window manager. While I would prefer to stick with these default options I would be happy to learn about window managers which *don't* exhibit this behaviour.

I'm using Linux Debian Squeeze and I already have compiz installed. I want metacity stop automatically boot, and instead want compiz to start automatically.

The last two lines of my .xinitrc looks like this xterm -g 80x24+10+10 -bg black -fg green & metacity When I used twm, I could exit it from the menu (return to the tty where I run xinit), but how do you exit metacity? The man metacity does not mention this, but it refers to the panel menu (which I don't have). Maybe it's there?

I'm using latexmk -pdf -pvc to keep compiling my LaTeX files to PDFs while they are displayed in evince. I'm doing that a lot with different files and I keep needing to zoom the PDF content, resize the window and enable "always on top". I like to be able to do this automatically using the command line. Using [-geometry](https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/23281/4245) doesn't work with evince ("Unknown option") and the command line help doesn't say anything about it as well. I tried the preview -w option which gives me a nice sized window, but the automatic update feature I need seems to be disabled in this mode. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 with the classic desktop and the default window manager. Is there a possibility to set both the size and position as well as "always on top" from the command line for evince (or similar PDF viewer with auto-update)? I think there might be some window manager control tool which can resize and configure windows from the command line. I'm aware of an [evince feature request](https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/963356) to add size and position arguments, which would be half the job already, but I don't think it will be implemented soon.
